During this special anniversary year, the University celebrated much growth on campus, including the construction of a new Center for Criminal Justice and Forensic Investigation and the grand opening of the Entrepreneurial Hub for Innovative Ventures and Endeavors’ (eHIVE) new location.

SUPERIOR TRAINING TOOLS, WAYNESBURG UNIVERSITY’S NEW CENTER FOR CRIMINAL JUSTICE & FORENSIC INVESTIGATION OFFERS STUDENTS CUTTING-EDGE TRAINING TO EXCEL IN THE FIELD.
Construction of the University’s new Center for Criminal Justice and Forensic Investigation, located on Route 19 next to the existing CSI Center, was completed this year. The $3 million Center has been funded in its entirety by generous donors.
The new building includes the most advanced learning simulators available on the market today, providing students with an immersive training environment. The MILO Range Theater 180 and Pro system training offer interactive Use-of-Force and Crisis Management Training, delivering a realistic, adaptable training environment. In addition to hundreds of high-impact contemporary training scenarios, an extensive library
of interactive graphics-based firearm drills and exercises are available.
The L3 Harris driving simulator provides hands-on experiential training, offering experience without risks to people or equipment, allowing students to be exposed to various challenging and hazardladen scenarios in a controlled environment.
The Center also contains a large space that can be used for functions of up to 120 people or converted into three separate classrooms outfitted with state-of-the-art technology, a conference room and office space.
Waynesburg University unveiled the new location of the Entrepreneurial Hub for Innovative Ventures and Endeavors (eHIVE) in February. Now located on the first floor of Stover Campus Center, the eHIVE’s new space continues the work of the University’s award-winning Entrepreneurial Leadership Program, established in 2018.
The innovation hub houses equipment that supports student entrepreneurs in their prototyping efforts and enables them to make products to sell for their own small businesses. The renovations and purchase of the equipment were made possible by generous donors.
Equipped with a laser engraver, 3-D printers, large format printer, CNC machine, heat press and more, the eHIVE has already supported student entrepreneurs as they work on apparel startups or use the machines to create stickers, clings, etc.
Students can enroll in classes to learn how to operate the new makerspace equipment or prototype. The award-winning “Plastics to Progress” course is also offered in the new space. This class turns recycled plastic waste from campus into a product with social cause and supports recycling on campus.
In addition, the eHIVE supports the University’s retail learning lab and official campus spirit store, The Nest, with products created in the makerspace currently for sale in the store. In addition, staff and student workers have filled orders for custom products from across campus, providing an additional revenue stream to support the Center and its programming.
Committed to developing an entrepreneurial mindset within all students, Waynesburg University continues to receive accolades for its Entrepreneurial Leadership Program.
Most recently, the program was honored for Excellence in Student Engagement in Entrepreneurship at the 2024 Desphande Symposium. Earlier this year, the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE) selected Mindy Walls as a Justin G. Longenecker Fellow. Walls is Waynesburg University’s Interim Provost, the W. Robert Stover Chair for Entrepenural Leadership and Associate Professor of Business Administration.
Selection as a USASBE Justin G. Longenecker Fellow is the highest recognition that USASBE gives to individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the development, furtherance and benefit of small and medium businesses. The Longenecker Fellow designation recognizes the achievements of men and women whose passion and burning desire for small business and entrepreneurship is reflected in their teaching, writing, training and public service.
Last year, the eHIVE was named the “Outstanding Emerging Entrepreneurship Center” by the Global Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers (GCEC) during its annual conference at the Perot Museum of Nature in Science in Dallas, Texas.
In 2022, the Entrepreneurial Leadership Program was presented with the Rising Star Award for Excellence in Curriculum Innovation in Entrepreneurship at the 2022 Deshpande Symposium.
At the start of 2023, the 175 Years of Light Fundraising Initiative was officially launched to commemorate the University’s 175th Anniversary year in 2024.
As of late November, a total of $3,032,304 has been received for the 175th Anniversary Fund, which supports the University’s areas of greatest need, and an additional $480,676 has been pledged.
Waynesburg University is beyond thankful for the generous support of so many alumni and friends throughout this 175 Years of Light Fundraising Initiative. As we reflect on the blessings of these past two years, we are excited to announce the extension of this initiative through the end of our fiscal year, June 30, 2025. With Charter Day on March 25, 2025, marking the 175th anniversary of our charter’s signing, this is a fitting way to continue celebrating this special milestone. A special fundraiser was held for brick donations as part of the 175 Years of Light Fundraising Initiative. These bricks were donated by and in honor of alumni, family and friends and were laid in Cusick Court (between Hanna and Miller Halls), Veterans Memorial Plaza (between Stover Campus Center and Eberly Library) and John F. Wiley Stadium. Dedications were held at each of their designated locations during Homecoming 2024. A total of 562 bricks were purchased as part of this initiative, which raised a total of $98,350.
A dedication was held in classroom 204 of Hanna Hall during Homecoming weekend for The Villacampa Family Classroom, named in honor of Jorge (‘68) and Maggie Villacampa.
Formerly known as the Benedum Glass Room, The Baily Room was dedicated in November 2024. The space was renamed after a generous donation to the 175 Years of Light Fundraising Initiative by Mr. Charles R. “Chuck” Jr. and Mrs. Shirley R. Baily. The Baily Room is also in honor of the Baily family’s commitment to Waynesburg University and its students for more than a century.

When Kortney McGarvey (‘19) came to Waynesburg University as a biblical and ministry studies major, her dream was to become a youth pastor. In fact, as a student she had the opportunity to serve part-time as a youth pastor at a local church beginning her sophomore year through her senior year, where her dream continued to grow. She was living out what she was learning in the classroom, getting direct experience and clearly seeing the path for her future. Then, God spoke to her.
“The summer before my senior year of college, the Lord spoke very clearly to me and told me that whatever came next for me involved 1.) domestic missions and 2.) raising my support,” shared McGarvey.
While she tried to push away the nudging she felt from God towards a path she wasn’t interested in pursuing, God presented a plan for her once again.
“After months of wrestling with the Lord, I was at church and Rhetta, an Urban Missionary from Urban Impact, who was supported by Jefferson Baptist, gave the Missions Moment—her annual ministry update,” said McGarvey. “After the service, she approached me, knowing that I was graduating with a degree in ministry, and asked if I would be interested in shadowing her at Urban Impact.”
Although she wanted to say “no,” McGarvey accepted the offer and found herself at Urban Impact a few weeks later.
“I remember graduating college, moving to the Northside of Pittsburgh, starting at Urban Impact and feeling like I was in way over my head,” she said, explaining she had little to no experience conducting ministry in an urban setting, which left her feeling overwhelmed.
“I realized that I needed to humble myself and become a student of my students,” she explained. “I remember telling God at one point, ‘Lord, I know you have called me here, but I have no idea why. I have nothing to offer.’ So, I began asking God to break my heart for the Northside, because I knew that to hold onto the call that God had given me, I would need to have a fundamental love for the community that he placed me.”
McGarvey said God’s response to her was to plant her roots in the community—to settle down and invest. So, she and her husband, Bryce (‘19), embraced the Northside as their new home.
Despite of her initial hesitations, when McGarvey decided to follow God’s leading, the fear of uprooting her life and stepping out of her comfort zone began to dissipate.
“There was one point that day, as I was driving through the Northside, when God gave me a vision of living
here,” she continued. “I remember driving back to Waynesburg in tears, overcome by a perplexing mixture of fear, joy and peace. I knew with a profound confidence that Urban Impact was where God was leading me.”
Six years later, McGarvey is living out God’s calling and the University’s mission of faith, learning and service daily as the Assistant Director of the Options Department at Urban Impact. In her role, she supports high school students as they finish school in preparation for the next steps of their own journeys.
“I do a lot of ‘life & story work’ in my current position,” she shared. “Every person’s story is different; and often, before I can help a student move forward, we need to revisit past events, family history and trauma. We have to see where God’s good news intersects with their bad news.”
With a great love for their community in the Northside and their work at Urban Impact, both McGarvey and her husband, who now also works at the organization, have been able to make an impact in the most authentic way by living amongst the students and families they serve.
In a recent newsletter published by Urban Impact, a Pittsburgh Public Schools teacher shared her testimony on working with McGarvey and Urban Impact.
“This partnership has been about so much more than just a few days with students. To a person, the entire Urban Impact staff with whom I interacted has impacted my own life. I am finding my own relationship with God, not because I was ever preached to, but because I saw in every person from Urban Impact an inner peace and a genuine nature that I admired and aspired to find... I have never, in my long and storied life, met anyone quite like Kortney. Everyone needs a friend like that in their life. It changes the whole narrative.”
Through her own experiences, McGarvey encourages Waynesburg students to be where their feet are when looking for ways to get involved.
“I think, often, college students are looking forward to what is next. It is true college is an investment in their futures, but I believe that God wants to speak to them and use them and grow them in profound ways right where He has them,” she explained. “They don’t need to anxiously rush to and stress about what comes next. God has already numbered all of their days and written every day ordained for them in His book before a single one of them came to be (Psalm 139:16).”
And she serves as a great example of what can happen when you follow God’s leading.
Like so many alumni who played basketball for Waynesburg College between the years of 1969 and 2003, Frank Cuteri (‘75) was drawn to the school after meeting Coach Rudy Marisa. At the time, Cuteri was considering three institutions to continue his education, but his decision was made once he spoke to Coach Marisa.
“He made zero promises other than I would receive a quality education and an opportunity to play basketball,” shared Cuteri.
That was the magnetic presence that embodied Coach Marisa and what inspired so many through his 34 seasons as head men’s basketball coach at Waynesburg— infusing a passion for athletics with the necessary skills to excel in all faucets of life.
“What we did not realize as incoming freshmen was that Coach was preparing us for life after college,” Cuteri continued. “He began on the very first day.”
For years, Cuteri had wanted to give back to the University in honor of legendary Coach Marisa, who passed away in May 2023. When the opportunity arose this past spring, Cuteri, along with a group of men’s basketball alumni, spearheaded the establishment of the “Rudy Marisa Memorial Endowed Fund.”
An endeavor close to his heart, Cuteri was driven to continue the legacy put forth by Coach Marisa with his teammates through the endowment fund, which will support staffing, travel and facility upgrades for Waynesburg’s men’s basketball program.
“We believe it is important for all generations of Yellow Jacket Basketball players to be aware of their legacy and to promote its memory moving forward,” Cuteri shared. “We can think of no better way to show gratitude to Coach Marisa for making it possible. He brought us together as young men and forged a brotherhood that is still strong 55 years later.”
During his four years at Waynesburg, Cuteri poured himself into academics, basketball and his fraternity. He served on the school’s Judiciary Committee for two years, where he had the opportunity to interact with college administration on various issues. All of these things, according to Cuteri, proved to be helpful throughout his career.
At the forefront of these experiences was also what he learned from Coach Marisa.
“He showed us through his actions the importance of being on time and prepared to go. The Marisa Men have had successful business careers, wonderful families and friends and made significant contributions to helping others. This is not a coincidence,” he said.
A successful businessman himself, Cuteri held a career in the automotive industry for 45 years, where he says he learned the value of gratitude and a commitment to giving his best in everything he did.
His desire to give back began after the tragic death of a former fraternity brother and friend, who left behind a wife and three young children. Determined to help, Cuteri and several of his former teammates spent the next 17 years working together to raise money for the kids’ college needs. The remaining funds were placed in an endowed scholarship fund to benefit one Waynesburg University student every year.
During his career, Cuteri became more involved in charity work and developed a passion for giving back to those in need. He served on the board of the Pediatric Cancer Foundation in Tampa, Florida, and was a founding member of the One Voice Foundation, which benefits children in need.
He also launched the Artistas Café coffee bar at MercedesBenz in Tampa, where he served as the General Manager. The café provided opportunities for young autistic adults to build confidence and independence through working and interacting with customers of the dealership. For some, it was their first job and allowed them to open up in ways they hadn’t been able to before.
Through the Rudy Marisa Memorial Endowed Fund, Cuteri hopes to make a difference in the lives of future Yellow Jackets and expand the athletic opportunities afforded to them.
“Our intention for the RMEF [Rudy Marisa Memorial Endowed Fund] is to provide a vehicle to make and keep Yellow Jacket basketball competitive going forward,” he said. “We expect that future players will honor their own legacy by continuing to invest in it.”
With an ambitious goal of raising $2 million in donations, Cuteri encourages other friends and alumni whose lives were impacted in some way by Coach Marisa to consider financial support, of any size, to the endowed fund.
“Rudy Marisa dedicated his life to Waynesburg University. I hope we can dedicate a small part of ours to honor him.”

Kyle Kyper (‘10, M.B.A. ‘12) was always interested in financial investing. Today, he co-owns DSF Wealth Management Group and the 4:12 Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides direct financial relief to families and individuals in need. But before Kyper had 25 professionals overseeing $1.2 billion in investments nationwide, he was a studentathlete seeking someone to invest in his legacy.
After a year at a large public university, he was recruited to play football at Waynesburg University. Here, on Waynesburg’s main campus and at John F. Wiley Stadium, Kyper established close relationships with those around him that were pivotal to his college experience when he faced adversity.
“I wanted to play at a good program and for an experienced coach who cared about developing his players for success in life,” he said. “I thought that a larger school was a benefit. After a year, I transferred to Waynesburg where I quickly found out that the relationships that you have with the coaches, teachers and other students are the most important thing about your college experience.”
Those close relationships led him to start a student investment club on campus that offered his classmates a unique real-life experience. Retired professor of business administration
Christian Ola presented the idea after Kyper took his investment class, and he was excited to take the opportunity to help fellow students gain hands-on experience.
“It was something I couldn’t pass up,” he said. Kyper’s interest in investing and providing opportunities for growth continues today in his work with his nonprofit, 4:12 Foundation. The 4:12 Foundation is a grants-based foundation that shares God’s love with others by providing financial support and encouragement to people facing adversity in the Pittsburgh area by providing direct financial support.
In April 2024, he was awarded the Young Alumni Leadership Award at Waynesburg University’s annual President’s Donor and Scholarship Recognition Dinner for his work with the 4:12 Foundation.
“Each grant is unique and specific to the family who has been nominated. We also write them a letter of encouragement, sharing our mission and encouraging them to lean on God as their hope for a better tomorrow,” he said.
Kyper founded the 4:12 Foundation in 2021 with the help of Bridget Fouse and Ryan Franks, two of his coworkers at DSF Wealth Management Group. The idea came to him while setting goals to achieve before turning 40. A few years later, the lockdowns resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic granted him extra time to begin brainstorming the nonprofit.
“During the COVID-19 pandemic, there were a lot of people struggling financially or with their health, and I had some extra time since we couldn’t travel, so specific ideas around the foundation started to form,” he shared. “By the start of 2021, we were ready to fund our first grant.”
Since 2021, the nonprofit has provided over $400,000 to recipients facing adversity in the community. Kyper’s wife, Carly, also a Waynesburg graduate, stays in touch with recipients to check in on their well-being and see if they need additional support from the foundation.
Kyper stays active as an alumnus and donor, expressing his appreciation for the close Christian environment that the University provides.
“I believe that it’s important to provide students with an opportunity to learn in a Christian environment,” he said. “It helped to keep me grounded at a time in my life when I could have really been pushed in a different direction at the wrong school.”
Kyper is also an avid golfer and provided support to the University’s Swing Lab at the Greene County Country Club. He encourages fellow alumni to reconnect with the University so that they can see the difference giving makes.
“Take some time to get reacquainted with the people at Waynesburg so that you can see the personal impact that giving can have for the students,” he said. “Everyone wants to be proud of their university, and providing financial support can help Waynesburg continue to be an institution we can all be proud of.”
A coal miner’s daughter and the oldest of seven children, Dr. Barbara Packard (‘60) said she could not have imagined the path of her life. She had never considered attending college, though she had a love for learning; the financial commitment served as a barrier.
But, when she scored within the upper 10% of the country on a standardized test as a senior in high school, her “life was forever changed.”
Dr. Packard began her college career at a local university. With limited funds, she transferred to Waynesburg College’s extension center in 1957 to finish her degree. The affordability, smaller class sizes and more personalized learning proved to be a great fit while she considered the direction her education would take.
“I remember during my sophomore year, I was given two tests by the Psychology Department—one to identify my potential future career and one to measure my I.Q.,” she recalled. “When my psychology professor called me into her office to give me the results, she did not elaborate but simply said, ‘Barbara, you can do anything you want.’ I decided to continue with my goal to someday teach biology to high school students.”
During her senior year, after discovering she did not have the experience required to land a teaching position, the Department of Biology chair at Waynesburg, Dr. Charles L. Bryner, offered her a fellowship to study physiology at West Virginia University (WVU)—the catalyst that would begin her successful career in medicine.
At WVU, Dr. Packard became a research scientist with a focus on the heart—a passion she developed as a child after caring for her younger brother diagnosed with rheumatic fever.
“It was during that period, when I was the physiology laboratory instructor for medical students, that, for the first time, I realized I could become a medical doctor,” she shared. “However, it would be a difficult choice for personal and financial reasons. And, before I took up a space in medical school, I needed to discover what a scientific career offered me. I spent the next seven years teaching college and graduate students, performing postdoctoral research in several laboratories, and spending four years in cardiovascular research administration at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), the second largest institute at the National Institutes of Health.”
In 1971, Dr. Packard was admitted to the University of Alabama (UAB) Medical School, which had “one of the
finest medical and surgical reputations in the field of heart and vascular diseases,” where she graduated in 1974. From 1974 to 1975, she served as an Osler medical intern at Johns Hopkins Hospital Department of Medicine.
“My path took a quite unexpected turn when I was offered an opportunity to return to the NHLBI in 1975,” she said. “It was the perfect next step because I could make use of all of my scientific, medical and administrative education and experience to help the most people. I joined the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) and worked my way up the ranks to my final positions in the NHLBI Director’s Office as Associate Director for Scientific Program Operation in cardiovascular, lung, blood diseases and in sleep apnea, and as Director of the NHLBI Office of Science and Technology.
“After a 25-year career in the Institute, I retired in 1996 as Assistant Surgeon General of the United States with the rank of Rear Admiral in the USPHS.”
Never forgetting her Waynesburg roots, Dr. Packard has made a point to give back in support of the Biology Program, where her journey began, so current and future students can continue to receive a quality education to jumpstart their careers, equipped with the best tools for learning.
“Alumni and friends of the University are of vital importance to its success and growth,” she said. “They play a critical role as an extension of its ideals and for their contribution to its future as advocates and supporters.”
She notes, alumni of the institution “have an obligation to keep up to date on the institution’s advancements and needs in order to provide whatever intellectual and financial support we can offer,” emphasizing how even small gifts can add up to reach fundraising goals.
With an incredibly successful career and a story of perseverance, Dr. Packard stands as an inspiration to never limit your potential or give up on your dreams.
She encourages students to “identify your strengths and interests, explore potential careers, become educated, set your goals, and continually seek out and seize appropriate opportunities to achieve those goals.”
“During my career, I recognized opportunities, took risks, had setbacks and kept moving forward,” she shared. “Along the way, I received encouragement, guidance and support from many wonderful individuals I call ‘My GIANTS.’ I remain forever grateful to each of them for their part in my living the American Dream.”

One of the many ways students at Waynesburg University are able to thrive and grow through updated programming, enhanced facilities and new learning opportunities is through the generous gifts provided by our alumni, friends, parents, faculty and staff. Over the past several years, the University has been blessed by the overwhelming support of this community through its annual fundraising programs, where funds raised have been applied to areas where students benefit the most.
Earlier in the year, the University celebrated its third annual, weeklong crowdfunding campaign, Orange Week. This event has been a fun and exciting way for athletic teams and academic departments to get involved in enriching the experiences offered to their students through the creation of their own fundraising campaigns. With the money raised this year, participating departments and teams were able to provide their students with program upgrades, travel opportunities and other designated program needs. All donations were deposited into restricted accounts dedicated to each individual campaign for its intended purpose.
In November, the University celebrated its ninth annual Day of Giving fundraising event, with the goal of raising $300,000 towards the 175th Anniversary Fund or academic department and athletic team campaigns. Through the generous support of the entire Waynesburg community, the University was able to exceed their goal once again. All funds raised during this yearly event benefit current and future students by providing financial aid, enhancing academic and athletic programs and meeting the University’s operational needs.
On Sunday, May 5, 2024, Waynesburg University held its Commencement Exercises, honoring more than 350 undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students during its milestone 175th anniversary year.
John Montgomery, President and CEO of Community Bank, addressed the Class of 2024 as the Commencement speaker, and Rev. Dr. Edward Glover, founder of Urban Impact and Associate Preacher at Christ Church at Grove Farm in Sewickley, served as the Baccalaureate speaker.
Valedictorian Gabrielle Michele Reifsnyder, an early childhood education and special education major from Carlisle, Pennsylvania, delivered the valedictory to the Class of 2024.
During the ceremony, both Montgomery and Glover were awarded honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degrees. In addition, Tyler O’Quinn and Brandon Thomas were commissioned as Second Lieutenants in the United States Army. 2LT O’Quinn will serve Active Duty in the Armor Corps, and 2LT Thomas will serve in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, Field Artillery Corps.
President and Mrs. Lee presented the 2024 Douglas G. and Kathryn D. Lee Servant Leadership Award to recipient Grace Ingram, a criminal justice major from Valencia, Pennsylvania. The Award is presented annually at Commencement to one graduating student who has demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities over the course of their time at the University.
Waynesburg University hosted its annual Homecoming celebrations Thursday, Oct. 17, through Saturday, Oct. 19, with a special emphasis on the University’s 175th Anniversary milestone year.
The festivities kicked off Thursday night with a Virtual Trivia Night, where alumni had a chance to compete with other graduates near and far.
In-person events began Friday with an afternoon of Alumni Golf at the Greene County Country Club and a dedication for The Villacampa Family Classroom in Hanna Hall 204 on campus. In the evening, the All-Alumni Celebration and Combined Class Reunion was held at The Denny House, where the reunion classes of 2019, 2014, 2009, 2004, 1999, 1994, 1989, 1984, 1979, 1974 and 1969 were recognized. The evening also featured a special celebration of the 175th Anniversary.
Several events took place on Saturday, which included a few new events and special dedications.
In addition to the 28th Annual 5K Run/Walk, reunions were held for graduates of the Baseball Program, with a special baseball alumni game; the Departments of Biology, Environmental Science and Health Science and Chemistry and Forensic Science; Department of Education; Stover Scholars; and Department of Nursing.
The Class of 1969 was honored at a reunion breakfast for their 55th reunion year and the Class of 1974 celebrated their 50th reunion with a brunch at the President’s House.
Special dedications of the bricks purchased as part of the 175th Anniversary Fundraising Initiative were held separately at their respective locations: Cusick Court, Veterans Memorial Plaza and John F. Wiley Stadium. Three games were held at John F. Wiley Stadium, which included football and men’s and women’s soccer. During halftime of the football game, Josiah Gordon and Macy Moore were crowned as the 2024 Homecoming King and Queen.
