For generations, Waynesburg University has honored its heritage while embracing the opportunities of the future. As we continue to build on this tradition, I’m pleased to share this edition of The Lamp and President’s Report, which includes stories of our growth and enduring mission, as well as our Honor Roll of Donors from July 2024 through June 2025, in the pages that follow.
This year, we have enhanced the student experience through continued investments in our campus, including updates to the Benedum Dining Hall and residence halls, and the renovation of our Practical Exercise Facility, formerly known as the CSI Center.
We also look ahead as we prepare to renovate Hanna Hall, the oldest building on campus and the proud home of our Department of Business Administration and award-winning Entrepreneurial Leadership Program. Our Entrepreneurial Leadership Program, in particular, continues to expand its reach and impact, both for our students and the communities it serves. It exemplifies the spirit of innovation and service that defines a Waynesburg education.
In today’s challenging higher education environment, our strategy is evolving to ensure our University remains competitive among peers while staying rooted in our Christian mission. With faith and purpose, we are charting a course that will keep the University strong for generations to come.

From Classroom to Startups: Teaching the Next Generation of Thinkers
Innovative problem-solving is just one of the many skills students are developing through Waynesburg University’s award-winning Entrepreneurial Leadership Program and its co-curricular innovation and entrepreneurial hub on campus, the eHIVE.
With access to three experiential learning labs, including The Nest, Makerspace and Project GROW, and creative engagement across campus for all majors, there is no shortage of opportunities available for students to become confident, entrepreneurial thinkers ready to go on and transform the world.
And that transformation is already taking place, garnering national recognition.
In 2023, the eHIVE was named the Outstanding Emerging Entrepreneurship Center by the Global Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers. The Entrepreneurial Leadership Program also earned the Rising Star Award for Excellence in Curriculum Innovation in 2022 at the 11th Annual Deshpande Symposium and the Excellence in Student Engagement in Entrepreneurship Award in 2024 at the 13th Annual Deshpande Symposium.
As part of the newest learning lab, Project GROW, students are actively taking part in redemptive entrepreneurship through this interdisciplinary service learning opportunity in the mountains of the Dominican Republic. In partnership with Meeting God in Missions, Project GROW serves a remote village and women’s association to help create and implement sustainable startup business ideas and provide holistic ministry. Learn more on pages 10–11.
In the Makerspace, located on the first floor of Stover Campus Center, students are gaining hands-on skills in prototyping and innovation, with access to stateof-the-art equipment, including a laser engraver, 3-D printers, large format printer, CNC machine, heat press and more. The Makerspace offers micro-production services and teaches students how to create, design and produce products for both custom orders from external clients and for The Nest, Waynesburg University’s campus store and retail learning lab.
Now fully managed and operated by students, The Nest not only offers first-hand experience in retail and business operations, it also directed a Product Innovation Fellowship for four students during the 2024-2025 academic year. This inaugural fellowship supplied members of the student cohort with an inside look at product procurement, development and launch over a span of 11 weeks, which they used to introduce new products to the store.
Some of those new products available for purchase are also those created by student entrepreneurs through the eHIVE’s Approved Student Business program, which launched in 2023.
Thanks to the many resources available within this program, students are turning their ideas into ventures. Through one-on-one coaching and the hands-on learning offered through the Makerspace and Nest, students are able to grow their own businesses before they graduate.
Additionally, unique competitions offered on campus, like the eHIVE’s Shark Tank Series hosted in spring 2024, go the extra mile to support student business growth even further.
During this particular series, students were coached on the how-tos of starting a business, shared startup ideas for feedback from business professionals and then pitched their ideas in front of the “sharks” to secure startup funding. Each Shark Tank pitch was five-to-seven minutes in length and had to follow a set of required topics.
For spring 2025, the competition was adapted with a new twist: finalists had 60-90 seconds to deliver their pitches for cash. To secure their seat in the final round of this Idea Pitch Competition, students submitted video pitches of their startup ideas for review by the judges.
As the Entrepreneurial Leadership Program moves into its eighth year, its focus remains on building and supporting more student businesses, equipping young entrepreneurs with the career-ready skills to become versatile leaders ready to create change.

Transformative Growth, Global Impact
Service is woven into the story of every student who matriculates at Waynesburg University. From the moment they are officially welcomed in Roberts Chapel to their final walk across the lawn of Miller Hall, each student is equipped with the knowledge to lead in their fields and called to make a lasting impact on the world around them.
That journey towards impact starts on day one.
With service at the core of its mission, Waynesburg University has offered countless opportunities throughout the years for students to become involved in serving others locally, domestically and globally. But, during the COVID-19 pandemic, travel opportunities halted and instructors were challenged with getting creative. That’s how Project GROW, Waynesburg University’s newest eHIVE supported Entrepreneurial Learning Lab, first began.
Under the skilled direction of Cassy Dorsch, director of the eHIVE and Nest at Waynesburg University, a group of students ran a remote service project during the pandemic to provide workshops on the basics of business to a small group of women from a remote village in the Dominican Republic. This empowerment project allowed students to think creatively, using skills they were learning in the classroom to help launch sustainably supportive business ideas to be implemented by the group.
After receiving positive responses from both students involved in the project and members of the village, Dorsch has since successfully led two in-person service trips to the Dominican Republic, in partnership with
Meeting God in Missions and the Center for Service Leadership, as part of Project GROW.
And the momentum this project has gained is far from slowing down. Each year, the focus has evolved to provide additional ideas and support for growth to make a lasting impact. In 2024, students and members of the women’s group walked through the design thinking process, keeping the needs of the village in mind. One of the ideas born through that process was soap making.
With the information gathered from that trip, students returned to the village in 2025 with supplies and the knowledge needed to provide instruction on the soap-making process. They also provided a jewelry-making workshop, bringing back handmade bracelets purchased from the women to sell in The Nest, Waynesburg University’s campus store, where proceeds benefit future trainings.
One of the truly compelling aspects of Project GROW is the way it blends the individual, majorspecific skillsets of each student participant to provide holistic service and ministry. In other words, students don’t have to have a business background in order to serve. Project GROW is educationally aligned to provide skill-based service learning for students of all majors.

“With Project GROW, students are empowering a community hundreds of miles away with the education and skills they are learning at Waynesburg University,” said Dorsch. “Witnessing the spark that occurs when students utilize their knowledge to create real-world impact has been a blessing to see firsthand. Our students are putting the mission of faith, servicew and learning into practice—and they are returning changed. Hope is stirring in our partner village and in the hearts of students serving.”
During the 2025 trip, education majors had the opportunity to serve at a local school. While there, they held a “Something From Nothing Challenge,” encouraging the local students to think outside of the box by creating something unique out of the supplies provided for them.
Students majoring in biblical and ministry studies met with local pastors and participated in worship services with residents. As a team effort, all participating students helped install a fence line on the property recently acquired by the women’s group.
“I will never forget my experience in the Dominican Republic,” shared Natalie Double, a junior English (professional writing) major. “It was a wondrous week of witnessing God’s creation and building new relationships under Him. The week of serving His people was something I will cherish forever.”
As they plan ahead for upcoming trips, students are hard at work developing new ideas for the women’s group to turn into startup businesses. And, they’re discovering their potential for future impact is limitless.

Stover Christian Innovators Writing Competition: Inspiring Ethical Business Leaders
Dr. W. Robert Stover, a 1942 graduate of Waynesburg, and his wife Joan established The Stover Foundation in 1996, and he served as its chairman prior to his death in 2015. For the last four years, the Foundation that bears his name has sponsored a writing competition at Waynesburg University to recognize ethical Christian innovators.
Annually, all students on campus, regardless of major, are invited to write essays focused on redemptive business action: following a Christian-based, “I restore, we win” mentality, rather than an exploitative “I win, you lose” strategy or even an ethical “I win, you win” approach. Students are instructed to tell “the story of a person, company or service in [their] field who has demonstrated redemptive innovation by creating a Christian infrastructure.”
The competition, organized by Cassy Dorsch, director of the eHIVE and The Nest campus store, has garnered 104 total submissions, and $4,800 in prize funding has been awarded since the competition was established in Spring 2022.
“I think that the Stover Writing Competition is a challenging, impactful competition that causes participants to pause and reflect on how the work of Christ and the act of redemption can be lived out by Christians in our modern world,” said Dorsch. “By identifying ethical Christian innovators in their own fields, students have the opportunity to reflect on and learn from leaders who refuse unethical business practices and take risks to restore and repair brokenness – just as Christ did for us.”
Dorsch looks forward to continuing the competition into the future through the generosity of the Stover Foundation.

About Dr. Stover
After graduating from Waynesburg, Dr. Stover went on to serve on its Board of Trustees as both a member and a chairman. In 1948, he founded Western Employers Service (now known as Westaff), the first temporary staffing agency on the West Coast. This company, which he began with $800 and a rented typewriter in a tiny San Francisco office, grew to become a multimillion-dollar corporation with more than 300 offices in the United States and across the globe. He took the company public in 1996.
Dr. Stover’s life and work centered around his faith. He was a friend of Waynesburg University’s students, administrators and faculty for many years. His generous patronage made possible the Stover Campus Center dedicated in 1999, the distinguished Stover Center for Constitutional Studies and Moral Leadership, student scholarships and the W. Robert Stover Entrepreneurial Leadership Endowed Fund, out of which the Entrepreneurial Leadership program and the eHIVE at Waynesburg were born.
Dr. Stover’s legacy of ethical business leadership is palpable at Waynesburg University, thanks to students, faculty and staff who are committed to a like-minded approach to entrepreneurship.
“I would like to be remembered as a businessman who tried to live according to the principles and values of Jesus Christ,” Dr. Stover once said. “If I am remembered for that, that will be enough.”

The Hanna Hall Renovation Project
At Waynesburg University, excellence in education goes hand-in-hand with a vision for the future
In recent years, Waynesburg University’s Entrepreneurial Leadership program has won multiple awards on both the national and international level, and in 2024, the University welcomed the institution’s largest-ever freshman class in the Department of Business Administration.
As our Business Program continues to expand, the University is preparing for a renovation of Hanna Hall to increase accessibility and modernize our learning spaces. This includes merging two classrooms into one large, accessible space, as well as combining and upgrading our computer labs to create a state-of-theart technology center.
The renovations will include the creation of a new exhibit, the Dr. Barbara Baugh ’60 Packard Extraordinary Women of Waynesburg University Exhibit, designed to honor our long history of providing post-secondary educational opportunities for women. For Hanna Hall is more than a historic building; it stands as one of only two remaining sites in the United States where men and women were educated equally from the earliest days of coeducation.
As Waynesburg University looks to the future, Hanna Hall continues to symbolize a legacy of academic vision and faith-driven purpose. Preserving this landmark is not only an act of honoring the past but also a commitment to ensuring that the University’s mission continues to inspire and equip future generations.
The Dr. Barbara Baugh ’60 Packard Extraordinary Women of Waynesburg University Exhibit
Dr. Packard graduated from Waynesburg in 1960 before going on to a decorated career at the National Institutes of Health, where she retired as Assistant Surgeon General of the United States with the rank of Rear Admiral in the United States Public Health Service. She hopes her story and generosity to this initiative inspire future generations of Waynesburg students and alumnae to pursue their goals with the same perseverance she did.

ENHANCING THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE:
Upgrades in Dining, Living and Learning
Waynesburg University continues to invest in the heart of campus. Over the past year, the University has completed upgrades to Benedum Dining Hall, enhanced residence hall amenities and renovated the Practical Exercise Facility, formerly known as the CSI Center. These projects reflect the University’s ongoing commitment to ensuring a vibrant, student-centered environment that supports academic success, personal growth and community.
Benedum Dining Hall
During summer 2025, Waynesburg University reimagined its campus dining experience with updates to Benedum Dining Hall, developed in direct response to student feedback and designed to elevate the campus meal experience.
“Providing our students with the best possible experience has always been a top priority,” said Douglas G. Lee, Waynesburg University President. “These enhancements reflect our commitment to engaging with students to find out what is important to them and, in turn, creating the dining experience they wanted.”
The enhancements include new equipment and facility upgrades designed to expand dining capabilities and give students more variety in how their meals are prepared. With a focus on made-to-order options and fresh ingredients, the dining hall now provides an engaging experience tailored to student preferences.
“Today’s students are looking for bold flavors, dynamic choices and spaces that match their energy,” said Chef Kyle Nagy, Waynesburg Executive Campus Chef. “We believe campus dining is about much more than serving great food; it’s about connection, culture and fueling the student experience.”
Beyond the upgrades themselves, the dining hall offers an atmosphere that fully engages the senses. Students can interact directly with the cooks, watch their meals being prepared and enjoy the sights, sounds and aromas of fresh food being made right in front of them, adding to the sense of community and connection at mealtime.
Practical Exercise Facility
Students pursuing careers in law, forensics, criminal justice and more now have access to enhanced hands-on learning thanks to the newly renovated Practical Exercise Facility. The Practical Exercise Facility now includes a mock courtroom, a bloodstain pattern interpretation room and a fingerprint lab.
Completed in spring 2025, the renovation was designed to complement the new Center for Criminal Justice & Forensic Investigation. Together, these state-of-the-art facilities provide hands-on, real-world training for students preparing to enter the field.
Students across a range of academic programs, including criminal justice administration, cybersecurity and forensics, forensic accounting, forensic biology, forensic chemistry, forensic investigation, forensic science and pre-law, benefit from experiential learning opportunities in these immersive training environments.
Residence Halls
Waynesburg University has invested in the student residential experience with a series of upgrades to existing residence halls and plans for a new facility, set to begin construction within the next year.
Over the summer, the University made upgrades to a number of its residence halls, including the addition of air conditioning to nearly all rooms. In addition, several floors of Burns Hall were converted from the previous double room occupancy to two-bedroom suite style with a bathroom in the center room.
The University has also secured a donor commitment for the construction of a new three-story residence hall within the coming year.
WAYNESBURGgrows Strategic Growth Rooted in Mission
In a rapidly changing higher education landscape, Waynesburg University has continued to strategize and grow. Through the faithful support of alumni, donors and friends, the University remains steadfast in its mission of preparing the next generation to live lives of purpose for the glory of God.
“Our Senior Leadership Team understands and appreciates that our highest priority is to assure the future of this Institution and that we bear a tremendous responsibility to do so,” said President Douglas G. Lee. “We must continue to evolve in order to fulfill this responsibility.”
The University recently completed a year-long engagement with a consulting firm, an investment that, together with many other considerations, has helped shape the institution’s strategic direction while guiding decision-making moving forward. The consulting firm’s analysis resulted in the Senior Leadership Team’s creation of a roadmap to support continued growth, long-term viability and effectiveness, which includes the following:
• A strategic undertaking aimed at refining liberal arts education to align with future demands;
• An analysis of all of the course offerings and majors at the University;
• A plan, currently being implemented, to strengthen academic quality, sustainability, and strategic alignment by ensuring that institutional resources are invested where they can have the greatest impact; and
• Strategic fiscal management through a combination of modest enrollment growth, fundraising and continued profitability analysis.
The Senior Leadership Team has reviewed the consulting firm’s recommendations, financial data, two surveys of faculty and staff, years of assessment and course data and peer analysis. Implementation of the recommended changes are intended to make Waynesburg University well positioned to offer the highest quality mission compliant programs with outstanding outcomes while insuring the institution improves sustainability.
STRATEGIC FOCUS BY DIVISION
Through efforts spanning all divisions of the university administration, meaningful strides have been taken to
develop strategic focus areas and many initiatives have already been implemented; all intended to strengthen the University. Focus areas include:
FINANCIAL STABILITY AND GROWTH
Tom Szejko, Vice President for Finance and Chief Operating Officer, led the development of a five-year forecast and plan to keep the institution sustainable by focusing on revenue generation and decreasing expenses for operational efficiency.
“Having spent more than 20 years in financial management for higher education, I believe we have put a budget in place that will not only sustain the institution, but will also create financial opportunities to grow where it would be beneficial,” said Szejko.
ENROLLMENT EXPANSION AND RETENTION
Enrollment critically affects the overall finances of the institution, and it is important for the University to have realistic goals based on an understanding of the pool of prospective students in our market. The Office of Admissions is working more closely than ever with University Relations on marketing initiatives that help bolster and maximize recruitment efforts to reach those goals. Equally important is retaining the students that have matriculated.
“We believe our people make this University special,” said Adam Jack, Vice President for Enrollment Management, Athletics, Public Safety and Strategic Initiatives. “When we can bring students to campus and let them experience that firsthand, it becomes our strongest opportunity to recruit them. We’re increasing our touchpoints with prospective students and encouraging more of those meaningful campus visits.”
ACADEMIC & PROGRAMMATIC EXCELLENCE
Strengthening academics includes the continuous assessment of all programs, program prioritization and optimization, as well as growth in online degree completion and non-traditional programs.
“In order to remain relevant, it is important for Waynesburg University to evaluate course offerings as an institution,” said Melinda Walls, Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost. “We are going through an in-depth process with our faculty to identify courses and majors with low enrollment and student interest.
The exciting part of this work is that it will allow us to modernize our curriculum and make investments that can help grow enrollment and improve student readiness to meet the demands of the workforce, both today and tomorrow.”
DEVELOPMENT AND MARKETING MAXIMIZED
In an effort to meet the increased goals set forth in the budget for growth, strong marketing and development outcomes will be important. University Relations has implemented several new projects, including a redesigned homepage, the launch of a new interactive campus map and continued growth of the WU Social Media Influencer Program, all aimed at enhancing enrollment marketing strategies. A new role has been created to bridge marketing and admissions, to further deliver more personal and targeted messages to prospective students leading to campus visits and applications. These enhancements coupled with additional digital marketing are intended to bolster enrollment and help the University stand out amongst its peers.
Institutional Advancement is focusing on opportunities to grow both major gifts and annual giving to the University. This effort has required adding two staff positions that will support that effort. Equally important to the fundraising is stewardship. The team has created numerous naming opportunities and has expanded travel efforts to connect with alums and friends regarding campus initiatives.

CAMPUS WIDE TECHNOLOGY ALIGNMENT
Information Technology Services recently completed a major refresh of data center infrastructure to provide enhanced data security, enhanced application support services and further support of academic programs.
“We are currently advancing several technology initiatives, including planning for a new student information system and developing a Technology Master Plan aligned with the University’s mission,” said William Dumire, Vice President for Information Technology Services and Chief Information Officer.
FACILITIES AND INFRASTRUCTURE IMPROVEMENT
“The University is excited about the improvements that have been made on campus over the last five years through donor generosity, grants and University contributions totaling an impressive $30 million,” said President Lee. “These enhancements would not have been possible without the support of our donors.”
The renovations have provided opportunities for further fundraising through naming opportunities and, as shown on pages 14-15, also provide improved spaces in which students can learn and grow. The University has set a goal to create a campus-wide master plan for future growth and development to help prioritize capital investment.

Building a Legacy of Christian Scholarship
As an institution committed to its Christian foundation, students at Waynesburg University can explore and practice their faith through weekly chapel services, Bible studies, student-led worship services, faith-centered clubs and more. No matter where they are on their faith journey, students are provided the chance to grow and connect in a supportive learning environment throughout their time on campus.
One unique opportunity available for those interested in taking a deeper dive into their faith is through a recent scholarship initiative known as The Iona George Fund for Scholarship in Early Church History. This annual scholarship, which covers tuition for one student over a 12-month period, was created through the generous donation of Thomas George in memory of his aunt, Iona George, whose strong Christian faith served as an inspiration to him and those around her.
Completion of this scholarship takes recipients through an extensive research process focused on the first 400 years of the Christian church and prominent church leaders since the time of Jesus.
From there, they take what they’ve learned through independent research and construct it into a thesis paper for publication.
The first student to complete his scholarly research was Nicholas Haushalter ’22, a Christian mission major, whose research was titled, “John Chrysostom and the Exposition of Scripture.” His published work became the first bound book to join a scholarly library on early church history available within a section of Waynesburg University’s Eberly Library and the President’s Office.
“The work I did for the Iona George Scholarship was more impactful for me than any other work I did at Waynesburg,” recounted Haushalter. “It introduced me to serious academic research and writing, which I have found especially helpful in seminary as I study for a Master of Divinity degree. It also introduced me to John Chrysostom—a man whose preaching I continue to be influenced by—and reinforced my continued interest in the early Church. As such, it would be hard for me to overstate the ways in which

this project benefited me, whether as a student, a man in training for ministry or a disciple of Christ.”
Since Haushalter, two additional students have successfully presented their scholarly research and added their published papers to the collection, including Jason Polgar ’25, a dual political science and biblical and ministry studies major, who wrote “St. Cyprian’s Pastoral Theology for the Beleaguered Camp of Christ: Imitation, Perseverance, And Restoration” and Ross Owens ’25, a children and youth ministries major, who wrote “Origen of Alexandria: Telos of Enlightenment.”
“The research and writing process enhanced my scholarly abilities,” shared Polgar. “I am now much more equipped to approach both large and small research projects with scholarly excellence. I grew in the skills of engaging a large amount of sources, synthesizing them in writing and presenting those findings in an academic tone. Because I worked on a paper for the Iona George Scholarship, I have attained both skills and confidence that have helped me in seminary.”

“committee, who helps in the development and review stages of their thesis. Once complete, their paper is presented at a final symposium of family, faculty and students.
In today’s modern era, the chance to study the early years of the Christian church at such a high level is one rarely promoted or available to students as part of their undergraduate studies at other institutions. The scholarship not only provides this exceptional opportunity for students to gain valuable experience before graduate school, but also offers financial support for a portion of their academic journey along the way.
For Polgar, the opportunity to study the history of the early church was something he couldn’t pass up.
“The history of Christ’s Church throughout the ages is very important for Christians today: it gives us examples, warnings and a connection with our religious heritage,” added Polgar.
As the scholarly library expands with newly added publications produced by recipients of the Iona George Scholarship, so will the overall knowledge and understanding of early church history on Waynesburg University’s campus.

FAITH, SERVICE AND THE MAJOR LEAGUES
Mason Miller’s remarkable and inspiring journey from Division III baseball to Major League Baseball (MLB) is one many in the Waynesburg University community have come to know over the past few years. But even more notable than his incredible rise to the major leagues is his humble nature and servant heart.
No stranger to serving the community, Miller joined Waynesburg University eager to make an impact on the lives of others. The Bethel Park native grew up as an active member of the Boy Scouts of America and earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Interested in continuing service work in college, he was drawn to the Bonner Scholarship Program, where students complete more than 140 hours of service work each semester.
“Before my time at Waynesburg, service was something that was important to me,” explained Miller, a 2020 graduate. “…the Bonner Program was something that was enticing to me, not only because I was interested in service and the impacts that would have on others, but also myself, which I didn’t even realize fully when I started it.”
Now as an MLB relief pitcher for the San Diego Padres, where he was recently traded from the Athletics, Miller’s focus on service has grown to make an even larger impact. For Miller, one of his favorite ways of giving back has been his ability to connect with young fans during gameday, especially those with Type 1 diabetes like himself.
“I remember being a kid and looking up to major league players and not even being able to formulate words,” he said. “So now, for me, being on the other side of it, that’s always an awesome chance for me to have a grounding moment and realize I’m getting a chance to live out my dream, and I’m helping to build dreams of kids for future generations as well.”
Miller’s silent battle with Type 1 diabetes was an almost career-ending obstacle until he was officially diagnosed following his sophomore year at Waynesburg. After he received his diagnosis, Miller’s health and pitching performance improved, gaining
attention from MLB scouts during his time as a Yellow Jacket. After a strong graduate season at Gardner-Webb University, Miller was drafted in the 2021 MLB Draft by the Athletics and made his MLB debut in 2023.
“I don’t think there are words I can say that would describe it well enough for somebody else,” shared Miller on the emotions of making his official major league debut. “You feel the emotion in the building, you feel your heart pounding. You’re facing people that you’ve watched on TV, some of them you’ve grown up watching, and it’s just a shock of ‘Am I really here? Did I earn this? Do I belong?’ For me, the second inning of my debut I struck the side out and that was like my ‘I made it, I’m here and you’re going to have to drag me out of here if you’re going to get rid of me.’”
Despite his busy schedule during the season, Miller spends much of his free time advocating for diabetes awareness and meeting with young patients. He has also been an active supporter of Camp Sweet Escape of the South Carolina Youth Diabetes Association.
Among the many accolades Miller has received during his career so far, some of the most prominent include playing in the 2024 MLB All-Star game, where he not only set the record for the fastest pitch in All-Star history at 103.6 MPH but also secured the win for the American League team; being named to Baseball America’s Major League All-Rookie Team and the All-MLB Second Team; receiving the A’s 2024 Dave Stewart Community Service Award; and being selected as the A’s nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award.
In addition, Miller was the recipient of Waynesburg University’s 2025 Young Alumni Leadership Award for his unwavering faith, determination and servant heart.
Future plans for Miller and his wife Jordan (Porterfield ’23) include launching a youth baseball clinic in Pittsburgh to support young athletes in the area. Through this initiative, his story can continue to inspire young athletes with the hope that, when you work hard and stay focused, nothing is impossible.
A LEGACY OF DEVOTION:
THE PORTER FAMILY AND WAYNESBURG UNIVERSITY
When Waynesburg University dedicated two campus landmarks during Homecoming weekend in October 2025, it marked the continuation of a story that began nearly a century ago. On Friday, Oct. 3, the University’s Business Office was named in memory of Margaret “Peg” Porter, and on Saturday, Oct. 4, the pavilion at John F. Wiley Stadium was dedicated to Ralph “Jake” Porter, both late and beloved members of the Waynesburg community.
For their son, Bill Porter, and his wife, Mary, the ceremonies were about far more than plaques or buildings—they were about honoring two lives devoted to family, education and the College, later University, that helped shape them.
JAKE PORTER: EDUCATOR, ENTREPRENEUR AND PROUD YELLOW JACKET
Born in 1905 in Morris Township, Greene County, Pennsylvania, Ralph “Jake” Porter grew up the son of a farmer. His early years were marked by hard work on the family farm, which delayed his entrance into college until his mid-20s. A graduate of Nineveh High School, he earned his Bachelor of Science in Education from Waynesburg College in 1932.
At Waynesburg, Jake distinguished himself on the football field, playing halfback for the Yellow Jackets. Even after graduation, he remained connected by volunteering as a ticket taker at football, basketball and wrestling events. His son Bill fondly recalls helping his father during these outings, a simple act that reflected Jake’s enduring loyalty to his alma mater.
Professionally, Jake pursued a dual career as both an educator and a businessman. He worked as a teacher, coach and principal in schools across southwestern Pennsylvania, concluding his career as principal of East Franklin Elementary in Waynesburg. He also managed multiple car dealerships in Greene and Indiana Counties. Yet no matter how busy life became, his ties to the College and friendships with figures like longtime men’s basketball coach—and his Crago Avenue neighbor—Rudy Marisa kept him closely connected to the Waynesburg community.
“Dad was a proud Wolfman until the day he died,” Bill reflected, recalling the football team’s legendary victory over Penn State during Jake’s tenure playing for Coach Frank Wolf.
PEG PORTER: DEVOTED MOTHER, DEDICATED PROFESSIONAL
Peg Porter was born and raised in Waynesburg, one of seven children in the Berryhill family.
“Mom was a junior or senior at Waynesburg High School when she set her eyes on this halfback at Waynesburg College, and that became her focus,” said Bill.
Peg and Jake married in 1937.
After graduating from Waynesburg High School in 1932, she began her career with the G.C. Murphy Company, first at its McKeesport headquarters and later in the Waynesburg location, where she rose to assistant manager before stepping away in 1948 to raise her two sons, Bill and Ed.
By 1960, Peg returned to the workforce as a cashier in the Waynesburg College Business Office, where she worked for 19 years. Her role there deepened her family’s bond with the College.
“Sometimes she had nonproprietary work that she brought home, and I would help her with it,” Bill remembered. “When there was still an alley behind Miller Hall, I used to use the fire escape when Mom was working late, to go see her in the Business Office,” said Bill.
HONORING THE PORTER LEGACY & CONTINUING THEIR TRADITION OF SUPPORT
In 2002, Bill and Mary Porter established the Ralph “Jake” Porter Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund, followed in 2009 by the Margaret “Peg” Porter Endowed Scholarship Fund. Both were designed to honor Jake and Peg’s love for Waynesburg while supporting future generations of students in business and education.
The dedication of the Business Office and Wiley Stadium Pavilion brought that recognition to an even deeper level.
“It brings things full circle,” Bill said. “It means everything that their names are going to be forever associated with those two locations.”
Jake and Peg’s legacy endures through Bill and Mary, who remain committed to education, history and philanthropy. Bill and Mary were awarded Waynesburg University’s Golden Key Award by the Office of Institutional Advancement in 2022
“Any friends or alumni that come to campus and experience the facilities, meet students, talk with them, see what’s going on—that should be inspiration enough to anyone that would like to contribute,” said Mary.
For Bill and Mary, the most meaningful part of giving back is knowing that the names Jake and Peg Porter will forever be tied to the campus that shaped their lives.
“Waynesburg is still doing it right,” Bill said. “We want it to survive and thrive, in perpetuity.”

Waynesburg University held its annual Day of Giving on Thursday, Nov. 6, 2025, marking the 10th iteration of the event. This year’s event raised more than $448,000 from 1,121 individual donors, including 433 alumni. Gifts poured in from 36 states, as well as Washington, D.C.; Ontario, Canada; Northern Ireland; and England.
Since its inception, the Day of Giving has raised nearly $3 million in total through more than 11,000 donations, which has fueled meaningful improvements across campus. These contributions have directly enhanced student experiences and supported academic and athletic programs through upgraded technology, state-of-the-art equipment and learning opportunities such as conferences and team bonding trips.
This year’s theme, "10 Years of Impact," celebrated a decade of generosity that has defined the Day of Giving. Over the past 10 years, the event has grown into a cornerstone of support for students, uniting alumni, parents, faculty, staff and friends from around the world in a shared mission to strengthen the University and its future.
The 2025 campaign continued that tradition of collective giving, rallying the global Waynesburg community around a fundraising goal of $300,000. Supporters were invited to give to the area of the University that meant the most to them—whether that be an academic department, athletic team or campus initiative—ensuring that every contribution made a direct and meaningful impact.
“This milestone represents 10 years of generosity transforming lives,” said Donna Nypaver, director of donor relations and annual giving. “The continued commitment of our alumni, parents and friends shows just how

deeply they believe in Waynesburg’s mission and its students. Each gift, large or small, has helped create opportunities for our students and strengthened the foundation of the University for years to come.”
In honor of its 10th anniversary, this year’s Day of Giving placed a special emphasis on the stories behind the numbers. Leading up to and throughout the day, testimonials from faculty, staff and students highlighting the real and lasting effects of past Day of Giving gifts were shared across social media and email, showcasing how collective generosity has transformed classrooms, laboratories and playing fields. From enhanced learning technologies to expanded travel and research opportunities, the impact of a decade’s worth of giving was felt across every corner of campus.
The event once again sparked friendly competition among departments and teams through the Day of Giving Challenge, adding excitement and momentum throughout the day. Academic programs and athletic teams competed to raise the most funds and earn bonus awards. The Baseball program raised the most funds overall, earning an additional $2,000 prize along with the coveted WUDOG Trophy.
Each of the two runners-up among academic departments and athletic teams also unlocked bonus money. The Department of Business Administration raised the most of any academic program, followed by the Department of Education. After Baseball, the Softball and Men’s Wrestling teams brought in the next highest totals. Additional awards recognized the groups that secured the most individual gifts of $20 or more and achieved the highest percentage of alumni donors.
In the afternoon, a matching gift challenge was announced, adding another layer of competition to the celebration. Fred DePalma, a 1979 graduate and member of the Board of Trustees, promised $10,000 if 10 additional gifts of $1,000 were made. The challenge money was unlocked thanks to donor generosity, helping drive participation by allowing donors to double their impact.
This year’s Day of Giving also saw new initiatives designed to boost outreach and engagement. Students in the Department of Communication’s Social Media Production course (COM 326) partnered with the Office of Institutional Advancement to expand the University’s online presence and strengthen campaign visibility through coordinated digital content, student-created videos and social media coverage.
As Waynesburg University reflected on 10 Years of Impact, the milestone served as a reminder that each act of giving— each message shared, each donation made—contributes to something much larger. Each contribution, no matter the size, represented a shared belief in the University’s mission to inspire lives of leadership and purpose through faith, learning and service. Together, the Waynesburg community has created a legacy of support that will continue to shape lives for years to come.

ORANGE WEEK 2025: CAMPUS COMMUNITY CROWDFUNDS TO SUPPORT STUDENTS
Waynesburg University’s annual Orange Week once again proved the power of collective generosity, as alumni, parents, faculty, staff and friends came together to make a lasting impact on the student experience. Held March 14-21, 2025, the crowdfunding campaign raised an impressive $60,904 through more than 660 individual donations, directly benefiting academic departments and athletic teams across campus.
Each year, Orange Week invites members of the Waynesburg community to support specific projects that enhance students’ education and campus life. Participating departments and teams identified tangible needs—such as equipment purchases, travel opportunities or educational experiences— with fundraising goals of up to $2,500. This focused approach allowed donors to see exactly how their gifts would make a difference, whether funding new lab tools, supporting student-athletes or helping students attend conferences and competitions.
“Orange Week gives our community the chance to come together in a visible, measurable way to support the programs they care most about,” said Donna Nypaver, director of donor relations and annual giving.
“Every gift, no matter the size, helps our students learn, grow and thrive.”
Throughout the week, the University celebrated with on-campus activities, such as serving orange soda floats in Benedum Dining Hall and holding a cookie decorating contest in the Beehive, designed to engage students and faculty and highlight the spirit of giving. Donors and participants alike could track progress updates through online fundraising thermometers, sparking friendly competition and campus pride.
By the close of the campaign, the collective enthusiasm of donors and participants had once again demonstrated the importance of coming together to support Waynesburg students. The funds raised had a direct and lasting effect, enhancing hands-on learning, enriching academic programs and strengthening the overall student experience now and into the future.
A Year to Remember: WAYNESBURG
UNIVERSITY’S 175TH ANNIVERSARY
In 2024, Waynesburg University launched a milestone observance under the theme “175 Years of Light,” drawing on its motto Fiat Lux, “let there be light,” and commemorating 175 years since the thencollege’s charter was established.
A principal pillar of the campaign was the 175th Anniversary Fundraising Initiative, designed to support the areas of greatest need at the University.
Donors received commemorative bookmarks for gifts of any size, while gifts of $2,500 or more will merit a limited-edition anniversary coffee table book. Larger gifts unlocked naming opportunities for benches, classrooms, athletic facilities and other spaces on campus.
Throughout the campaign, the University marked the anniversary with a slate of signature events. The celebration kicked off with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra performing their Holiday Brass Spectacular show in Roberts Chapel in December 2023, with another performance in December 2024.
A Day of Service on March 16, 2024, brought students, faculty, staff and alumni together to volunteer at local sites from food banks to community gardens, underscoring Waynesburg’s mission of service.
The annual Charter Day convocation, held March 25, 2025, featured reflections on the legacy of the institution and honored faculty with teaching excellence awards.
“Above all else, what we celebrate today is the strong connection that this institution has with its foundation of faith; standing on the shoulders of those that came before us, we are the beneficiaries of their prayers and work,” said President Lee during his Charter Day convocation address.
Tangible results of the campaign are already visible across campus. In 2024, Waynesburg broke ground on the new Center for Criminal Justice and Forensic Investigation and completed the project in 2025. The facility was funded entirely through donor support and underscores the University’s investment in growth, experiential learning and regional partnerships in public safety fields. The Villacampa Family Classroom in Hanna Hall; Baily Room in Benedum Dining Hall; Margaret “Peg” Porter Business Office; Porter Pavilion at Wiley Stadium, in memory of Ralph “Jake” Porter ’32; and Enid Hope (Waters ’46) Crockard Classroom in the Education Department were among the spaces dedicated in recognition of major gifts to the 175th Anniversary Fund.
The Alumni Office built special 175th anniversary programming into Homecoming weekend in October 2024, including reunions and dedication ceremonies for commemorative bricks and named campus spaces tied to the initiative.
The “175 Years of Light” campaign wove together fundraising, new infrastructure, alumni engagement and community service into a cohesive celebration of legacy and future promise. The University community looks forward to the next 175 years of faith, learning and serving.

The 2025 Waynesburg University women’s soccer team made history by setting a new program record for wins in a season (17) and claimed the first ECAC championship in recorded history by defeating Keene State 1-0 on Nov. 22. Junior goalkeeper Lex Greenlief was named game MVP.
The Waynesburg University Esports team not only added multiple additions to its roster of games but continued to enjoy tremendous success under Director & Head Coach Dr. Chris Davis with an NECC national title in Rocket League and another in Overwatch.
2025 COMMENCEMENT
Waynesburg University honored nearly 300 undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students Sunday, May 4, on the Lawn of Miller Hall during its Commencement Exercises.
Toby Z. Rice, President and Chief Executive Officer of EQT Corporation, served as the Commencement speaker and Jeffrey E. Arnold, Executive Director of the Association of Presbyterian Colleges & Universities (APCU), served as the Baccalaureate speaker.
During the Commencement ceremony, both Rice and Arnold were awarded honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degrees.
Valedictorian Hailey Mark, an English (professional writing) major from Canonsburg, delivered the valedictory to the Class of 2025 and Seth Robertson addressed graduates as the graduate program representative.
President and Mrs. Lee presented the 2025 Douglas G. and Kathryn D. Lee Servant Leadership Award to Ross Owens, a children and youth ministries major from Sewickley. Established by the Waynesburg University Board of Trustees to honor the leadership and commitment of Douglas and Kathryn Lee to the University, the award is presented annually to one graduating student who has demonstrated leadership in the University’s mission focus areas of faith, learning and serving during their time as a student.
HOMECOMING 2025 Once a Jacket, Always a Jacket
Each autumn, Waynesburg University welcomes its most cherished guests back to campus: alumni and friends.
The University hosted hundreds of alumni and guests October 3-4 for a Homecoming weekend celebrating tradition and Yellow Jacket pride. Graduates spanning generations returned to Greene County to reconnect with classmates, meet current students and reflect on how their alma mater continues to evolve.
“Homecoming is always such a special weekend, and 2025 was certainly no exception,” said Dave Floyd, director of development and alumni relations. “Once again, we experienced the pride and energy that come from hundreds of alumni from so many different decades coming together on campus to reminisce on the past and witness how the University has grown and where it’s headed.”
Festivities began Friday morning with the annual Alumni Golf Outing at the Greene County Country Club, where laughter and friendly competition set the tone for the weekend. Later that day, members of the Institutional Advancement and Business Offices dedicated The Margaret “Peg” Porter Business Office in memory of a beloved member of the Waynesburg community whose legacy of service embodies the University’s mission.
That evening, the historic Denny House on High Street buzzed with energy during the All-Alumni Celebration and Combined Class Reunion. Graduates representing class years ending in 0 and 5—along with members of the Class of 1974 and earlier—were recognized. President Lee shared updates on campus initiatives and future projects, while alumni swapped stories from their respective decades. Meanwhile, in west Waynesburg, the lights shone on the courts of the Bechtle Family Tennis Facility as former studentathletes returned for Tennis Alumni Night Under the Lights, where camaraderie met competition in an evening of exhibition play.
Saturday morning began with a Coffeehouse Rewind Pop-Up Event at RGB Coffee in downtown Waynesburg, offering free coffee, treats and conversation. The 29th Annual Homecoming 5K, which raises funds for student mission trips each year, started a short time later and welcomed runners and walkers of all ages.
Throughout the morning, academic departments and athletic programs hosted alumni gatherings, including the Baseball Alumni Game, Cross Country and Track & Field Brunch, and receptions for Business, Nursing, Education, Fine Arts and Stover Scholar alumni. Adjacent to the Education
reunion, guests attended the Dedication of the Enid Hope (Waters ’46) Crockard Classroom, funded by the James (Enid’s grandson) & Melanie Crockard Foundation to honor Enid’s years as an educator. A special brunch was held at the President’s House for the Class of 1975’s 50th Reunion, where alumni reflected on how both the University and their friendships have grown over half a century.
“It was wonderful to see such a great turnout from the Class of 1975 for their 50th reunion,” Floyd said. “Not only did 60-70 guests gather for their brunch at the President’s House, but their group was well represented at many of the events throughout the weekend. They set a high bar for next year’s 50th reunion group, the Class of 1976! We look forward to welcoming back all classes that end in either a 1 or 6— and all members of the Class of 1975 and earlier—for reunions next year.”
By midday, the Wiley Family Field Fest brought everyone together, offering food, family activities and fellowship leading up to the Homecoming football game against Allegheny College. Alumni cheerleaders joined the current squad on the sidelines for the first half of the game during Cheer Alumni Day. During halftime, the 2025 Homecoming King
and Queen, Hudson Pincavitch (finance major from Waynesburg) and Aubrey Brooks (nursing major from Kittanning) were crowned, marking one of the weekend’s most anticipated moments.
The weekend concluded with the Dedication of the Porter Pavilion at Wiley Stadium, honoring 1932 alumnus Ralph “Jake” Porter, whose family’s ongoing generosity continues to shape the Waynesburg experience. Read more about the Jake and Peg Porter family on pages 24-25.
“In addition to the events to which so many of our alumni have become accustomed, it was really meaningful to have the opportunity to hold the three dedications throughout the weekend, as well,” Floyd said. “Not only did they honor the people whose names are now attached to those spaces, but they also celebrated the generosity of the Porter and Crockard families who, like so many of our alumni and friends, continue to play such a crucial role in helping our institution grow.”
From the first tee to the final whistle, Homecoming 2025 was a reminder of what makes Waynesburg University special: a community rooted in faith, service and the enduring bond between past and present.

Waynesburg University recently launched The Lux Society, a new initiative created to recognize and honor individuals whose annual giving makes a significant impact on the life of the University. Inspired by Waynesburg’s motto, Fiat Lux, The Lux Society embodies the spirit of illumination and guidance. Just as light reveals the path ahead, the generosity of Lux Society members serves as a beacon of hope and possibility for our students, helping to light the way toward a brighter future.
Membership in The Lux Society is extended to alumni and friends who contribute $1,000 or more annually to the Fund for Waynesburg from the 2025-26 fiscal year and beyond. The Fund for Waynesburg supports the comprehensive student experience by funding educational programs, operational needs and student financial aid.
