Sunday, March 2026

+ Please stand as you are able.

Prelude | John Grecia, piano

Gymnopèdie No. 2

+ Call to Worship

Let our hearts exult in the Lord; our strength is exalted in God. Let our mouths be ever fixed in praise; God has given us the victory. There is no Holy One like the Lord; There is no rock like our God. Praise the Lord!

Second Sunday of Lent

Erik Satie (1866-1925)

+ Hymn 395: LIEBESTER JESU Blessed Jesus, at Your Word

+ Call to Confession

+ Prayer of Confession

O God, Who is faithful and just, we have failed to help those who have little while we have much. We are boastful and haughty, and fail to appreciate the gifts you have given. Our arrogance has led us away from your righteous way. Forgive us, merciful God, and lead us to a humble path, for Jesus’ sake. Amen.

+ Declaration of Forgiveness

People of God, Jesus Christ, who gave himself once and for all, forgives and saves. Therefore, be reconciled to one another, holding fast to the confession that in Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God.

+ Response of Praise | What Wondrous Love is This (Verse 2)

+ Passing of the Peace

The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. And also with you.

Words of Welcome

Prayer for Illumination

Scripture Reading | Isaiah 6:1-13

+ Hymn 722: CANONBURY Lord , Speak to Me That I May Speak

Scripture Reading | Mark 4:1-20

Anthem | Quartet + Choral Scholars

Hear Our Prayer (1932) Wilbur Chenoweth (1899-1980)

O loving Savior , hear us we pray, guide us and guard us on life’s highway. Be ever near us lest our feet stray; O loving Savior , hear , oh hear our prayer. Jesus, Savior , we have wandered , and we need thy tender care , lead us in thy great compassion, be our only stay. Savior , hear us in thy mercy, as we bow in prayer. Be ever near us , hear us , Lord , our prayer. -Alice S. Grainger

Sermon | “Out of Control” | The Rev. Ryan Balsan

Time for Reflection

+ Affirmation of Faith | A selection from The Second Helvetic Confession

The Supper of the Lord (which is called the Lord’s Table, and the Eucharist, that is, a Thanksgiving), is, therefore, usually called a supper, because it was instituted by Christ at his last supper, and still represents it, and because in it the faithful are spiritually fed and given drink. For the author of the Supper of the Lord is not an angel or any man, but the Son of God himself, our Lord Jesus Christ, who first consecrated it to his Church.

Offertory Anthem

Lead , Kindly Light (from Eternal Light: A Requiem) Charles H. H. Parry (1848-1918)

Lead , Kindly Light, amidst the encircling gloom, Lead Thou me on! The night is dark , and I am far from home , Lead Thou me on! Keep Thou my feet; I do not ask to see the distant scene; one step enough for me. I was not ever thus , nor prayed that Thou shouldst lead me on; I loved to choose and see my path; but now Lead Thou me on! I loved the garish day, and , spite of fears , Pride ruled my will. Remember not past years! So long Thy power hath blest me , sure it still will lead me on. O'er moor and fen , o ' er crag and torrent , till the night is gone, and with the morn those angel faces smile , which I have loved long since , and lost awhile! – John Henry Newman (1801-1890)
