By Alan Hodge The Dover family YMCA, 411 Cherryville Rd. in Shelby is growing by leaps and bounds and the groundbreaking and ribbon-cutting event held there Sept. 2nd proves it. The ceremony revolved around the new Candy Arey Family Plaza that will be built on the YMCA lawn, and the new Teaching Kitchen near the YMCA entrance. The event was attended by a wide range of folks. ernment, and business representatives. A healthy slice of the crowd was made up of YMCA members who were there to see their favorite facility celebrated. A variety of speakers included Cleveland County Family YMCA CEO Cameron Corder who praised everyone who keeps the Y going and growing. “We are well-postured for the future with this team,” he said. Dover Foundation board president Kathy Wilson made a comment regarding her group’s relationship with the YMCA. “I want to say how pleased and proud we are to support this enrichening and vital organization,” she said. Long-time YMCA supporter Candy Arey was also honored for her many, many years of commitment to the YMCA. She was the Cleveland County Family YMCA’s first board Robert and Candy Arey were at the chair. Having the new Pagroundbreaking for the Family Plaza vilion named in her honor is a fitting tribute. Study (2nd Part of “Class in Session” Series) As a teacher, I could always tell whether DANYALE my students had studied PATTERSON what I taught them. Those who studied were more confident and prepared to do the work. They generally performed well on the test and were ready for more advanced material. However, those who did not study often dreaded the test, performed poorly, and struggled to understand the concepts or how to apply them. This makes me think about how God wants us to study his Word. 2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV) says, “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” The Greek word translated as study is spoudazō, which means to be diligent, to exert oneself, or to make haste. But, how often do we diligently study God’s Word? EXCUSES Students have many reasons for not studying: “I didn’t understand it,” “It’s too hard,” “It’s boring,” or “It’s not relevant.” What excuses do we use for not going deeper into God’s Word? Do we sometimes sound like students in

God wants us to take Scripture seriously and understand that his Word is for our benefit. 2 Timothy 3:16–17 (NLT), “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.” CONSEQUENCES Just like students in school, there are consequences both good and bad - based on whether or not we study. When we do not take the time to study God’s Word, we can become vulnerable to false teaching, unprepared for trials, and uncertain about how to apply biblical truth to our lives. Over time, our relationship with God can become dull because we are not consistently listening to what he is teaching us. However, when we make time with God and his Word a priority, our lives will be blessed tremendously. Studying Scripture gives us wisdom, direction, correction, strength, and confidence. James 1:25 (AMP) says, “But he who looks carefully into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and faithfully abides by it, not having become a [careless] listener who forgets but an active doer [who obeys], he will be blessed and favored by God
in what he does [in his life of obedience].” Let’s Pray Lord, you are worthy of praise, honor and glory. Forgive me for making excuses for not spending time reading and studying the bible. I ask for understanding; please teach me your ways. Help me to become spiritually mature. In Jesus’ mighty name, I pray. Amen. CONNECTING TO GOD: If you’ve never established a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace today. Acknowledge your need for forgiveness and ask the Lord to cleanse you from all sin. Turn away from behaviors and attitudes that separate you from God. Surrender your life completely to Him and invite Jesus to become both your Savior and Lord. Seek out a Bible-believing church where you can grow spiritually and serve others. The dangers of mold infestation Whether it’s a fuzzy patch on a basement wall or a dark speckle on bathroom grout, mold might be dismissed as a minor nuisance. But a mold infestation is a serious health hazard and a threat to a home’s structural integrity. When mold spores find moisture and a food source, they can multiply rapidly, quietly compromising both a living space and residents’ wellbeing. The most pressing danger of mold is its impact on personal health. Mold releases tiny spores and volatile organic compounds into the air. When inhaled, these particles can trigger respiratory issues, particularly in sensitive individuals, according to the Cleveland Clinic. People with asthma, allergies or compromised immune systems are at the greatest risk of moldrelated illness. Exposure often leads to a cluster of symptoms, which include chronic coughing, wheezing, nasal congestion, skin irritation, and red, itchy eyes. More concerning is exposure to toxic molds, such as stachybotrys chartarum (commonly known as black mold). These strains produce mycotoxins — toxic substances that can cause more severe neurological issues, chronic fatigue, headaches, and respiratory bleeding in extreme cases, according to WebMD. Because these spores are invisible, inhabitants often suffer from unexplained illnesses for months before identifying the root cause. Mold also poses a severe threat to homes and other
structures. Mold feeds on organic materials like wood, drywall, carpet, and ceiling tiles. As the fungi grow, they secrete enzymes that digest these materials, gradually weakening them. Over time, an unchecked mold problem can rot structural support beams, ruin insulation, and cause drywall to crumble. By the time mold becomes visible on the surface, it has likely already caused extensive hidden damage inside the walls. Preventing and addressing mold requires vigilance. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says mold thrives in environments with relative humidity above 60 percent. Therefore, controlling indoor moisture is a very important preventive measure. Fixing leaky pipes immediately, using exhaust fans in kitchens and bathrooms, and running dehumidifiers in damp basements can keep spores dormant. If one discovers a mold infestation covering an area larger than 10 square feet, he or she should avoid disturbing it, as this can launch millions of spores into the air. Instead, homeowners should look into hiring professional remediation services to safely isolate, kill, and remove the mold. Treating mold early protects personal health and can prevent long-term damage to a home.

Work on the Plaza is set to begin late September/early October. The Teaching Kitchen is a state-of-the art space equipped with gleaming new appliances, a classroom area with flatscreen TV monitor, and a dining area. Designed as a hands-on space for learning and connection, the Teaching Kitchen will provide opportunities for children, families, older adults and other community members to build practical skills around cooking, nutrition and healthy living through YMCA programs and community partnerships. “This Teaching Kitchen represents what is possible when people and organizations come together around
the health of our community,” said Corder. “We are incredibly grateful to these foundations and donors who have a heart for the health of our community. We are thankful for their belief in this vision and their investment in a resource that will benefit our community for years to come.” Together, the new spaces expand the Dover YMCA’s ability to offer nutrition education, healthy cooking demonstrations, chronic disease prevention programs, Bible studies and community workshops. They also create new opportunities for the Y to collaborate with local organizations and communityleaders while providing welcoming spaces where people can learn, connect and build relationships. YMCA marketing director Macy Hamrick summed up the spirit of the day. “This vision is becoming a reality because of the generosity and commitment of those who believe in the future of our community,” she said. “We are grateful to our donors, families,
businesses, foundations, and community partners whose support is helping create spaces where we can move, play, connect, and belong.” More about the Dover Family YMCA Composed of over 70,000 square feet of multi-use space, the Dover Family YMCA was completed in 2000. What is the healthiest type of rice? Rice is a staple food that helps to feed billions of people across the globe. Rice is inexpensive and a nutritious source of vitamins and minerals, and it comes in many different varieties and a rainbow of colors. With so many options to choose from, people may wonder if certain rices are more nutritious than others. All rice can fit into a nutritious diet, but Healthline notes the healthiest options are whole grain, unpolished rices like black, red or brown rice. Here is a deep look at these varieties. • Brown rice: Brown rice has had the outer protective shell, known as the hull, removed. Unlike white rice, it still contains the bran layer and the germ. Brown rice contains flavonoid antioxidants that are good for illness prevention. Brown rice has a slightly higher fiber and protein content than white rice. Fiber can pro-
mote feelings of fullness. • Black rice: Black rice has a deep black color that often transitions to purple when cooked. Research shows that black rice has the highest antioxidant activity of all the varieties. Antioxidants protect cells from free radicals. Black rice also contains anthocyanins, which are plant pigments that have powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.The National Institutes
of Health notes that anthocyanins derived from black rice suppress the growth of certain cancers. • Red rice: Like black rice, red rice is high in protein and fiber and is packed with flavonoid antioxidants. Healthline says red rice has significantly greater potential to fight free radicals and contains higher concentrations of flavonoid antioxidants than brown rice. Flavonoids can help decrease
inflammation in the body. Although rice is healthy, it should be enjoyed in moderation. Arsenic is a concern related to overconsumption of rice, as the rice naturally absorbs inorganic arsenic from the soil. Brown rice tends to retain slightly higher levels than white rice. The Cleveland Clinic says rice grown in Thailand and basmati rice from India are varieties of rice with lower arsenic levels. Rice grown in California also has lower levels of arsenic when compared to rices from the southeastern United States. Arborio rice from Italy tests high in arsenic and other heavy metals. Rice is safe to eat, but some varieties are healthier than others. Individuals looking to eat healthier can choose to incorporate more rice into their diets.

Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ By Gary Miller I’ve learned over the years to keep a watchful eye when I travel to a treestand in an unfamiliar place. I especially do this when I’m hunting in another state. I’ve been lost a few times. When I’m walking in, I always try to turn around and look back to see what the view looks like going in the opposite direction. I also mark certain topographical differences such as a fallen tree or one that has a certain shape or GARY MILLER characteristic. I also take with me some marking ribbon just in case I have to wander through the woods in search of an animal I may have shot. I will mark my path back to my treestand. Again, I’ve just hunted long enough to understand that no matter how experienced I may think I am, I can and will get turned around in a strange place. I can remember when reflective tacks first came on the market and the first time using them in the dark to get to my stand. These tacks are pushed into a tree and when passed over with a flashlight, make a path look like an airport runway. I’ve hunted in some places where these tacks were put on both sides of the path every few feet, all the way to the foot of the tree where I was to hunt. Because someone marked my path, there was no way I was getting lost. When I think about the most important things in my life, I am equally thankful that some folks marked a clear path to keep me from getting lost. And even though I chose to stray from that path many times, it was not because the path was not marked sufficiently. Wisdom is knowing when to blaze your own trail and when to understand the trail that others have blazed, is the only way to go. It is also making sure you have marked the correct trail for those who will come after you. There are some areas in life where those who follow us must find out for themselves; things like what their passions, desires, and purposes are. There is no shortcut for these pursuits. In other areas we can save them a lot of heartaches if we will clearly mark the path and warn them concerning leaving its narrow way. Even though I had some great guides in my life, I also know if others had also accepted their responsibility for pointing me the right way, I could have learned a lot of important lessons a lot earlier than I did. The decision to bring a dog into a home requires careful consideration. Dogs make wonderful additions to a home, and adoption is a popular means to finding a dog. According to the ASPCA, approximately two million dogs were adopted in 2025 in the United States, and millions more are likely to be adopted in the years to come. People thinking of adding a furry friend to their family may have some common questions about pet adoption. Answering those questions before bringing a dog home can help prospective pet owners make the best decision for themselves and the dog that might become the newest addition to their families. Are all dogs the same? While all dogs need a loving home and regular attention from their owners, different breeds have different temperaments and character traits. Dogs also have different energy levels and sociability. Some dogs may be high energy and enjoy the company of people and other animals, while others
may prefer less active days spent exclusively with their families. Before adopting a shelter dog, it’s important for prospective owners to consider which temperament will best suit their household. Compatibility is an important variable when choosing a dog, so people considering adoption should try to get a handle on a dog’s temperament prior to initiating an adoption. Will the dog adapt immediately? It can take awhile for a dog to adapt to a new home. Preparing the home in advance to ensure it is welcoming and dog-ready can increase the chances the dog will adapt more quickly. But even that is not a given. When picking a space for the dog, experts advise choosing a secure and quiet space, which can allow the dog to gradually acclimate to its new home in a calm setting. Can I walk in and adopt a dog? While each facility is different, hopeful dog owners typically will be vetted by
officials at a local shelter before they are allowed to adopt. It’s the goal of shelter officials to place a dog in a safe, loving and caring home, so officials typically inquire about a prospective owner’s home and home life during the vetting process. Some may even schedule a visit to a potential owner’s home to check if there are other pets already living there, as some dogs are best suited to homes without other animals. Officials also may arrange a meet and greet between the dog and all residents of the home where the dog might end up. Compliance with the vetting process is important, and non-compliance may compromise the ability to adopt. Are shelter dogs already trained? Some shelter dogs are trained and some are not. But even trained dogs may backslide upon entering a new environment. So prospective dog owners looking to adopt should be ready and willing to train the dog they ultimately adopt. Training requires consistency and commitment. Training also helps dogs feel secure, which is why it’s so important that prospective dog parents be willing to do whatever is required to train or re-train a dog after adoption. Adoption is a great way to find a dog. Prospective dog owners are urged to ask questions about the process of adoption and to get to know any dog they might adopt prior to bringing the animal home.

Homeowners may need to assess their living areas to ensure that the spaces are as safe as possible for new pets, as there are many potential hazards around the typical home. Unfortunately, those hazards may not be obvious to new pet owners. The following are just a handful of potential pet hazards in a typical home. Food hazards Kitchens can be tricky spaces for pets. Cleaners that contain chemicals tend to be stored in kitchens, where hot appliances are periodically on as well. The kitchen also is where people prepare food, including some that could be unsafe for pets. Many foods that are safe for people are not safe for pets, and these include: • Alcoholic beverages • Avocado • Caffeine

Seniors are vulnerable to mental health issues. The World Health Organization says around one in five older adults experience psychiatric disorders like depression, anxiety, and dementia-related mood changes. While various therapies can help, seniors may discover volunteerism can be a surprising antidote to mental health concerns. Volunteering offers seniors many benefits, including a renewed sense of purpose. Volunteering also helps combat social isolation, which can lower rates of depression and anxiety. According to Voices for National Service, older adults who volunteer have reduced risk of mortality, more optimism and feel less depressed and lonely. People who were once working full time and are now in retirement may find they have hours to spare. Those hours can be directed toward volunteer efforts, which can boost seniors’ mental health in myriad ways. • Lowers depression and anxiety: The National Institutes of Health says research indicates consistent volunteering can help to reduce risk of depressive symptoms. Staying engaged and active combats feelings of hopelessness. • Decreased social isolation: Points of Light says regular time spent with peers and the people being helped can mitigate loneliness. Having a strong support network can make stress more tolerable and increase feelings of belonging. • Restores sense of purpose: When work ends, many seniors lose the structure that governed their working life. Volunteering gives the opportunity to wake up, follow a schedule and achieve goals. It can be rewarding to play a valuable role in the community again, according to Voices for National Service. • Mental stimulation: Volunteering may lead to learning new skills and interacting with others, and that can keep the mind sharp. • Physical activity: Older adults may lead sedentary lifestyles if they have nothing to keep them busy. Volunteering helps a person engage in some sort of physical activity. A 2025 study published in the journal Social Science & Medicine found volunteering is associated with lower levels of hypertension and chronic inflammation. Staying active can lower blood pressure, risk of heart disease and eight types of cancer. Volunteering is a tool older adults can use to stay healthy both physically and mentally.
