What good does it do to worry? Pastor Jimmy Black Mulls Memorial Baptist Church Shelby

In his first three years as a major league baseball manager, Connie Mack’s teams finished in sixth, seventh, and eighth place. Mack took the blame and demoted himself to the

minor leagues to give himself time to learn how to handle men. When he came back to the major leagues again, he handled his players so successfully that he developed the best base-

ball teams the world had ever known up to that time. Mack had another secret of good management: he didn’t worry. “I discovered,” he explained, “that worry was

threatening to wreck my career as a baseball manager. I saw how foolish it was, and I forced myself to get so busy preparing to win

Carolina Beach Music comes to Kings Mountain

NC Beach Blast Festival returns for two days of live music, family activities, and summertime fun Kings Mountain will trade mountain views for coastal rhythms when the 27th Annual NC Beach Blast Festival, presented by Metcon, returns to Patriots Park on August 21-22, 2026. The free, family-friendly celebration brings together the best in Carolina Beach music, dancing, food, and attractions for one of the city's biggest summer weekends. The festivities begin on Friday, August 21, with a 6 p.m. kickoff concert featuring Too Much Sylvia. Known for an energetic blend of beach music, party favorites, and crowd interaction, the band will set the tone for the weekend ahead. On Saturday, August 22, Patriots Park will host a full day of entertainment. The 2026 lineup features Swingin' Medallions, Castaways, Rivermist and headliner Jim Quick & Coastline, along with DJs Johnny B and Eric Bowman. Festivalgoers are encouraged to bring beach chairs, settle in, and enjoy the sounds that have helped define Carolina summers for generations. Fun beyond the music Beach Blast offers much more than its concert lineup. Families can explore inflatables, games, the Kids' Pavilion presented by the Carolina Power Partners, Blackbeard’s Pirate Port, and the Rotary Splash Pad. Swashbuckling pirate and

mermaid encounters add to the coastal atmosphere, while the watermelon-eating contest promises a delightfully messy taste of summer. Two festival traditions are also set to return: the BeachBlast Golf Cart Parade and the popular Beach Ball Drop. Food trucks will serve a variety of festival favorites throughout the event, and a beverage garden will be available for adult guests. Admission is free, although attendees are encouraged to support the participating food and craft vendors. Tents are permitted at Beach Blast but must be registered in advance with the city's Marketing, Tourism and Events Department. Umbrellas are welcome except in the park's tiered seating area. Air-conditioned restrooms are located near the Patriots Park War Memorial, with portable restrooms also available along Railroad Avenue. Lost and Found will be based at the information booth near the park entrance, while EMS personnel will be stationed in a red tent by the flagpole. Accessible parking and shuttle service will be available from the designated shuttle stops. With its mix of classic Carolina sounds, children's attractions and community traditions, the NC Beach Blast Festival turns Patriots Park into a lively summertime escape - no trip to the coast required.

7 and the peace of Dr. Shelly Shope concluding her tenure as the school's CEO on WORRY From Page 4 toGod,God;which surpasses all un- September 1. games that I had no time left to worry over the ones that were already lost. You can’t grind grain with water that has already gone down the creek.” Are you a person who worries? I know some people who worry about almost everything. They worry about the weather. They worry about the economy. They worry about their job security. They worry about national and global events. They worry about their health. And they worry about the safety of their families. But what good does all that worrying do? Absolutely none! Let me ask you something - Do you know what worry is? Worry is a sin! That’s right, it is a sin! You see, when you and I worry about things, it means that we are not trusting God. In 1 Peter 5:6-7, the apostle Peter tells us - Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. (NKJV) My friends, Jesus loves you very much, and He doesn’t want you to worry about something that probably will not happen in the first place! How many times have you worried about something and nothing ever came to be of it? I had a liver biopsy one time and I was so worried that I might have cancer. Turns out that everything was all right. Do you know what you do when you are worrying? You are wasting the precious time that God has given to you. You know, all of us can save money by putting it in the bank, but one thing we can’t save is time. So, when you worry about something, all you are doing is wasting the important time that God has blessed you with. And I promise you that you will never get that time back! Now, instead of worrying about something that might or might not happen, what should you and I be doing? I’ll tell you – we should be praying. We should ask God to help us through our difficult times and give us the strength to keep moving forward with Him. The apostle Paul in Philippians 4:6-7 said - Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known

derstanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. (NKJV) One day John Wesley was walking with a troubled man who expressed his doubt as to the goodness of God. The man said, “I do not know what I shall do with all this worry and trouble.” At the same moment, Wesley saw a cow looking over a stone wall. “Do you know,” asked Wesley, “why that cow is looking over the wall?” “No,” said the man who was worried. Wesley said, “The cow is looking over the wall because she cannot see through it. That is what you must do with your wall of trouble—look over it and avoid it.” My friends, whatever worries and troubles are facing you right now in your lives, I encourage you to look over them and avoid them. Give your difficulties to God and let Him take charge of them. There is nothing too big for Him! Glenn Turner once said, “Worrying is like a rocking chair; it gives you something to do, but it gets you nowhere.” Don’t waste your time worrying. What good will it do anyway? Instead, spend your time praising and worshipping and serving God!

644 N. Aspen Street • Lincolnton “Let Our Family Take Care of Yours!”

The only time I can remember being without a dog was during my college years. They have been a part of my life ever since I was a child. I even raised and sold pups for a few years. But even though I have always had a dog, I don’t consider myself a dog lover. The reason is that I have met a few people who truly are. To them, their dog is a close family member and is treated as such. Two GARY MILLER of my dear friends are dog lovers. Not only have I witnessed their furry affection, but I have watched them grieve deeply over the loss of their four-legged friends. It was the same grief I have seen in so many people over the years. Tears, heartache, questions, and even anger were as real as if they had lost a blood relative. I grieved with them. They are dog lovers. But my home had never been like that until Snatch came along. Snatch came from the local animal shelter. My son picked him out for his own family but because of circumstances had to hand him over to us. He soon became my wife and grandson’s dog. They treated him like royalty and made sure he lived a life of canine luxury. In return, Snatch obeyed every instruction they uttered. Every single one. If a visiting dog came to our house, Snatch accepted it. When our children had babies, Snatch recognized them as part of the family. He has been nearly the perfect dog. In dog years, he is now in his 80s (or older). Recently he began losing weight and after a trip to the vet, we discovered a mass that is terminal. His last days are coming this week. My dog lovers are grieving. And this time, I am grieving too. I have so much I want to say about God and dogs. I want to remind you that there are souls that are not human. And dogs are among God’s creations that have a soul. I want to remind you that dogs reveal the grace of God in that they are always waiting for you to return, no matter what you have just done. I want to remind you that God gave dogs purpose. They serve and love. They give comfort and security. Dogs are evidence for the existence of God. Only God could create something so complete. And yet, my dog-loving friend John wondered why God didn’t allow man’s best friend to live a longer life. I mean an alligator can live up to 80 years. But who wants a pet alligator? Why are our life-giving, therapeutic, love-filled dogs with us for only a relatively short period of time? I pondered that question. And the only answer I know is that God knew there would be more dogs than there would be dog lovers. So, to give each pup an opportunity to love and be loved, He made their lives shorter so that humans could love several of them during their own lifetimes. Dog lovers are not simply pet owners. They are a special breed of humans who have been given a gift to love a special breed of animals. And while they will grieve more than most throughout their lives, perhaps they will love longer and deeper as well. The Lunchbox (2nd Part of the “School Supplies” Series) I don’t know about you, but a lot of people say their favorite part of the school day was lunchtime. I loved the cute lunchboxes they DANYALE used to make PATTERSON for elementary students. I couldn’t wait to open mine and see what my mother had packed inside. There was always a sense of expectation. What did she put in there today? I knew whatever she packed was going to be good! That’s how we should approach the Word of God: with hunger, excitement, and expectation. When we open our Bibles, we should expect God to speak to our hearts. We should expect to receive wisdom, encouragement, correction, direction, and whatever else we need for the day. In Matthew 5:6 (NLT), Jesus said, “God blesses those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they will be satisfied”. Just as our physical bodies develop an appetite for food, our spirits should develop an appetite for the things of God. Something Meaty Some of the things in my lunchbox were there to fill me up and give me the nourishment and energy I needed. God’s Word does the same thing spiritually. Some scriptures are “meaty.” They chal-

lenge us to grow, mature, change our thinking, forgive people, walk in love, control our tongues, resist temptation, and become more like Christ. Job understood the importance of God’s Word. He declared in Job 23:12 (NLT), “I have not departed from his commands, but have treasured his words more than daily food.” Think about that! Job valued God’s Word more than his physical food. Something Sweet Of course, no good lunchbox was complete without something sweet! Maybe it was cookies, fruit snacks, pudding, or a little treat tucked away at the bottom. God’s Word has some sweet things waiting for us too. Psalm 119:103 (NLT) says, “How sweet your words taste to me; they are sweeter than honey.” Throughout scripture, we discover sweet promises about God’s love, protection, provision, forgiveness, faithfulness, and presence. There are scriptures that bring comfort when we’re hurting and hope when we’re discouraged. What’s in your spiritual lunchbox today? Don’t allow your Bible to sit unopened while your soul goes hungry. Every day, open God’s Word with expectation. Some days, he may give you something meaty that challenges you to grow. Other days, he may give you something sweet that encourages your heart. Either way, come

hungry. God has something good waiting for you. Let’s Pray Father, thank you for your Word. Give me a greater hunger and thirst for you and your truth. Help me to approach your Word each day with excitement and expectation. Feed me with the truth I need to grow and remind me of the sweet promises that encourage my heart. In Jesus’ mighty name, I pray. Amen. CONNECTING TO GOD: If you’ve never established a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace today. Acknowledge your need for forgiveness and ask the Lord to cleanse you from all sin. Turn away from behaviors and attitudes that separate you from God. Surrender your life completely to Him and invite Jesus to become both your Savior and Lord. Seek out a Bible-believing church where you can grow spiritually and serve others. Begin cultivating a meaningful relationship with God by setting aside daily time for Bible reading and prayer. (Enjoy these devotionals by Danyale Patterson. Atrium Health Levine Children’s Hospital recognized among nation’s leaders in rare disease care for children and families Designation from National Organization for Rare Disorders highlights the hospital’s excellence in advancing diagnosis, treatment, research and coordinated support for families across the region.

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Aug. 11, 2026 – Atrium Health Levine Children’s Hospital has been designated a NORD® Rare Disease Center of Excellence by the National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD®), a national recognition that validates the organization’s leadership in delivering coordinated, multidisciplinary care for children with rare diseases. The designation places Levine Children’s Hospital among a national network of approximately 50 leading academic medical centers, research institutions and children’s hospitals dedicated to improving diagnosis, advancing research and expanding access to expert rare disease care. For the estimated 30 million Americans living with a rare disease — approximately half of whom are children — that expertise can be life-changing. Specifically for children across the Carolinas, this recognition demonstrates significant access to specialized care, research opportunities and support closer to home. “We’re committed to bringing more answers, high-quality care and hope for families facing a rare disease," said Dr. Debra Reiger, director of Atrium Health Rare Diseases. “No family should have to travel hundreds of miles to find the care their child needs. Through this designation, we can continue to deepen our collaboration with leading rare disease experts nationwide and continue expanding what’s possible for the children and families we serve right here in the Carolinas.”

Approximately 70% of rare diseases begin in childhood, and many affect multiple body systems while also impacting a child's development, learning and quality of life. With Atrium Health Rare Diseases, Levine Children’s Hospital helps families navigate that journey by bringing together experts across genetics, developmental-behavioral pediatrics and numerous pediatric specialties to coordinate care around each child's unique needs. “Many children with rare diseases face medical challenges alongside developmental, behavioral or neurocognitive needs that require expertise from multiple specialists,” said Dr. Christine Erdie-Lalena, developmental behavioral pediatrician and associate director of Atrium Health Rare Diseases. “Our model brings those perspectives together so families aren't navigating a fragmented system on their own. By integrating genetics, developmental-behavioral pediatrics and a broad network of pediatric specialists, we're able to care for the whole child and help families move forward with greater clarity, coordination and support." The NORD designation represents an important step forward in Levine Children’s Hospital’s efforts to expand access to nationally recognized rare disease expertise while continuing to drive innovation, discovery and coordinated care for patients and families.

For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another. But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;
