Love is the keyword at the KM and Shelby Life Enrichment Centers By Alan Hodge “All who enter here are loved.” That simple yet eloquent phrase is not only the slogan for the Life Enrichment Centers (LEC) in Kings Mountain and Shelby, but also the way of life there. The Kings Moutain LEC is located at 222 Kings Mountain Blvd., and the Shelby facility is at 110 Life Enrichment Blvd. Both are modern, spotlessly clean, spacious, and welcoming facilities where participants enjoy fun and socially enrichening activities and fellowship led by caring and professional staff members. Currently, Shelby has 92 enrolled participants with an average daily attendance of 51. Kings Mountain has 83 enrolled with an average daily attendance of 50 participants. These folks are adults 18 years of age and older that are unable to safely stay at home alone. LEC also cares for adults living with illnesses such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Intellectual Developmental Disabilities and stroke related illnesses. Staff consist of Direct Care Professionals, RNs, LPNs, CNAs along with an administrative team that are dedi-

“Whether individuals or groups, you can make a difference. Volunteering can be as simple as playing bingo, arts and crafts, singing, dancing, playing an instrument, cooking, or just talking. If you are interested in volunteering and willing to share your time, talents, and hobbies with our participants, please give us a call.” The LEC story is an intriguing and inspirational one. LEC
From Page 1 “Life Enrichment Center is a National Model Adult Day Care and Health Service which got its beginning as an outreach mission of Shelby Presbyterian Church in 1978,” said Suzi Kennedy RN BS, one of the founding directors. “At that time, I was a leader of a Brownie troop which met at Shelby Presbyterian Church. After a Brownie meeting one day, she shared the idea of an adult day center with Shelby Presbyterian Church’s pastor, Rev. Jim Holderness. That was all it took. In no time, under Rev. Holderness’s guidance, Shelby Presbyterian Church had a steering committee of church members who helped form a board of directors, who in turn developed a mission statement, wrote policies and procedures, and established LEC as a private, not-for-profit 501c3 organization.” In July 1980, Life Enrichment Center opened in John Knox Presbyterian Church. Kennedy was the director for forty years. Toni Camp, RN, who has worked at LEC for over 28 years, became the director in June 2020. In addition to Camp, LEC has a dedicated, hard-working board of directors. LEC charges a fee for the care and services provided. In addition to self-pay, LEC has contracts with different agencies including the Veterans Administration (VA) and many long-term care insurances which may pay for adult day care and health services. LEC is Nationally Accredited through CARF International and have continually received their highest level of recognition. According to Camp, LEC is “100% mission-driven”. “LEC has been doing ‘Whatever it Takes’ to help families stay together at home and in the community by sticking to our mission - to support caregivers and their loved ones by providing safe, caring and reliable adult day care for adults who would benefit from health care, meaningful programs, and opportunities for socialization and respite for their caregivers”, she says. “Caregivers fall into many different categories – working caregivers, ‘sandwich generation’ caregivers, etc. LEC is there to provide support no matter their needs or situation. The second part of our unique service is the care we provide for our participants. Symptoms of participants’ illness often prevent them from being part of the community. At LEC, participants are accepted and loved as they are without being required to ‘fit’ into a certain mold. At LEC everyone belongs! LEC believes that every individual deserves to live with dignity, purpose, connection, and choices, regardless of age or ability. We are committed to enriching lives by promoting independence, fostering meaningful relationships, and providing compassionate, person-centered care that supports the individual while strengthening families and our community. Our daily goal is to bring joy to our participants and meaning to their lives – to have them feel seen, loved, valued, and heard.” LEC brings joy into the lives of participants with a wide range of activities. Camp elaborated on that part of the LEC scene. “In a safe supportive environment with healthcare oversight, participants can continue to enjoy activities they love but may no longer be able to do on their own such as cooking, gardening, music, dancing, attending church, and socializing,” she said. “Our activities are based on a participant’s lifelong interests, hobbies, and sometimes even job duties they held during their working years. We focus on strengths and abilities instead of disabilities or limitations. Since many of our participants may not be able to be active in the community, thanks to our wonder-

Special activity programs include proms, Christmas Pageants, holiday celebrations, and awards days just to name a few.” Everyone benefits from having LEC in the region. “Life Enrichment Center serves Cleveland and surrounding counties,” Camp explained. “We benefit the community by helping caregivers keep their loved ones at home and in the community. This provides caregivers with an opportunity to receive respite (a break in the caregiving role) or remain in the workforce. Caregivers have a peace of mind knowing that their loved one is in a safe, caring, and reliable atmosphere. Participants receive health/medical monitoring such as blood sugar checks, blood pressure checks, weight checks, and daily monitoring for changes in medical condition. This daily monitoring often catches health concerns early – decreasing Emergency Room visits and hospitalizations. The daily health monitoring of participants with chronic illnesses or dementia often allows them to remain in their home longer – giving caregivers a highly cost-effective alternative to nursing home placement. LEC improves the quality of life for vulnerable seniors and adults with disabilities by providing socialization, nutritional meals, health monitoring and promoting independence.” To learn more about Life Enrichment Center and how you or someone you are caring for can benefit call Donna Tesner at the Neisler Center in Kings Mountain (704739-4858) or Emily Littlejohn at the Shelby location (704-484-0405) to schedule a tour or free trial visit. Follow LEC on Facebook at Life Enrichment Center Adult Day Care & Health Services and visit the website at www.lifeenrichmentcenter.org. Life Enrichment Center is open from 5:30 am – 6:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

Meet INK 10 Months Old, Great Dane. Ink’s puppy months should have been growing, playing, and living the carefree puppy life. Instead, he was fighting to survive. He came to us heartbreakingly thin and suffering from an abdominal obstruction. Somehow, through it all, he never lost his gentle heart. Now healthy, happy, and ready for a fresh start, this big puppy loves other dogs, is house-trained, and firmly believes he’s the perfect lap dog. He’ll chase a cat that runs but quickly loses interest, and he’s wonderful with kids, but keep in mind that 120 pounds of puppy enthusiasm can accidentally knock over the little ones. Tips to ensure a better night’s sleep A state of sleep is necessary to give the body and mind time to recharge and prepare for the next day. Though such benefits are widely recognized, a significant percentage of individuals across the globe are failing to get sufficient rest, a dangerous reality that could be putting people at risk for various diseases and conditions. Lack of sleep is such a prominent problem that the research team behind a 2024 study published in the journal The Lancet: Diabetes & Endocrinology dubbed insufficient sleep as a “neglected public health issue.” That study surveyed 2,000 adults in the United Kingdom and found that 90 percent of respondents reported current sleep problems, with two-thirds of those individuals indicating they had experienced their issues for more than six years. And it’s not just adults suffering from sleep issues, as a 2023 peer-reviewed editorial written for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that the modern 24-hour lifestyle and pervasive utilization of electronics and social media is normalizing insufficient sleep among children and adolescents. Sleeping problems are not to be taken lightly, as the National Institutes of Health notes sleep deficiency has been linked to heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, obesity, and depression. Children who are not getting enough sleep may experience difficulty paying attention, which could adversely affect their academic performance, and might be prone to misbehavior. Of course, many of these side effects can be avoided by getting sufficient sleep. With that in mind, adults, parents, children, and adolescents can consider these strategies to get a better night’s sleep, courtesy of the Sleep Foundation.
• Replace an old mattress. Old mattresses can be uncomfortable and thus make it harder to fall asleep. • Block out light. Light exposure adversely affects circadian rhythm, so keep external light out of your bedroom and dim lights as bedtime approaches. Avoiding bright light as you transition to bedtime can contribute to the production of the hormone melatonin, which facilitates sleep. • Set an appropriate temperature. The Sleep Foundation advises setting a bedroom temperature thermostat to between 65 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit to prevent feelings of being too hot or too cold when going to bed. • Wake up at the same time each day. A routine that includes the same wake-up time each day can acclimate the body to a healthy sleep routine. • Begin to relax 30 minutes before bed. A pre-bedtime routine focused on relaxation can facilitate sleep. The Sleep Foundation notes activities like quiet reading, low-impact stretching, listening to soothing music, and mindfulness meditation can help you ease into sleep. • Avoid devices an hour before bed. The light emitted by tablets, smartphones and laptops can suppress melatonin production, making it hard to fall asleep. Make the hour before bedtime each night a devicefree time. • Exercise each day, but avoid intense activity close to bedtime. Daily exercise has been found to promote sleep, but intense exercise right before bed can make it hard for the body to settle down. Insufficient sleep is an emerging issue for people of all ages across the globe. Some simple strategies can be employed to facilitate a better night’s rest.

I am a sports fan. I don’t watch much television, but when I do, it’s normally around some sporting event. During the past few weeks, it’s been golf majors and some WNBA. And then there’s also the largest sporting event in the world. The FIFA World Cup. International football. Or what Americans call soccer. And while I’m not a big soccer fan, I have found myself following this tournament, mainly because this year’s event is in the United States. This tournament only happens every four years, and this year’s event will GARY MILLER include 48 teams from all over the world. Over one billion people will be watching, worldwide. At this writing, America has made it to the round of 16. Go USA! What has gripped me more than anything else, however, is how all our foreign guests keep going on with the hospitality of our people. Whether they are talking about the people in Dallas, Atlanta, Pittsburgh, Kansas City, or the 12 other host cities, the common theme is that they could not believe how friendly, accommodating, and helpful Americans have been. They almost always follow those glowing comments by saying, “That’s not what our leaders and media led us to believe.” And many of these people described the U.S. as a more friendly and welcoming place than their own country. They felt what I believe most Americans do very naturally. Love other people. Now we may not call it love. But that is how our actions were interpreted. And because we did what comes naturally, our neighbors were drawn to us. Even the players from Iran, despite the tensions between our nations, left a handwritten note to the people of Los Angeles thanking the city for its hospitality and expressing a desire for peace and respect among nations. All of this has not only been amazing to me but has given me so much to think about. One thing I think about is that most of the common people in every country want to live in harmony with others. I think this is inherent because we are all made in the Image of God. Another thing worth remembering is that nearly all media are in the business for profit. And there is nothing wrong with profiting. But we all have to realize that our major news sources tend to report on what has the greatest potential to make them a profit. And then there are the governments - each one made up of people who are often driven by power and personal prosperity, unlike the Jills and Joes who live under their reign. But of all the images that came to mind, the most compelling was the one that led me to the words of Jesus. “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” I can’t correct every false view of my faith that someone here or even in another country might promote. I can’t always explain my beliefs so that others can understand. I can’t always defend against those who use Christianity as a tool for power or prosperity. But I can, by my actions, love the people God chooses to bring into my life, whether they are with me for a lifetime or just a moment. And if I do that, perhaps they’ll leave saying that the ways of Jesus and His followers were not what they thought them to be. They’re better. Go USA!

Patriots paid honor to Kings Mountain Revolutionary War Veteran Preston Goforth By Alan Hodge
A passel of patriotic people gathered at the little Goforth cemetery in Kings Mountain on a sweltering July 3rd to pay honor to Revolutionary War veteran Preston Goforth who was killed at the Battle of Kings Mountain October 7, 1780. Over forty folks gathered in the woods off US74 where the cemetery is located. The cemetery has been under restoration recently and the dozen or so graves there were festooned with American flags. Goforth’s gravestone had an 18th century hat and a canteen of the type he might have carried in the battle on top as additional decoration. The event was emceed by Donnie Goforth. Margaret Ledford, a member of the Frields of the Brigade was also there. Special guests and speakers in-
cluded KM mayor Rob Wagman, Goforth descendant Jason Goforth from Nashville who played “Amazing Grace” on the harmonica, and Boy Scout Troop 92 leader John Kaiser. Marine Corps League bugler Jim Henderson. The crowd sang “God Bless America” a cappella. The event proved that patriotism is alive and well in Cleveland County. The complete story of Preston Goforth, his unique experience at the Battle of Kings Mountain and the ongoing cemetery restoration- including how people can donate to the cause- can be found in the June 17, 2026, Kings Mtn Herald at https:// issuu.com/wayne.kmherald/ docs/km_herald_6_17_26?fr=s NDgzYzgzNTA4NzA.
