Camp Coach Rhodes back to school drive coming to Kings Mountain Aug. 8 By Alan Hodge School will be starting soon and returning students will be needing scads of supplies and accessories for the classroom. Unfortunately, too many kids will be short of those necessities, and that’s where Coach Keith Rhodes and his annual back to school supplies drive will be stepping in to help. This year marks the 16th one that Rhodes has held a drive that not only gives students material items such as notepads, bookbags, pencils, pens, art supplies, and that sort of thing, but also provides haircuts, nail manicures, a nice meal, and uplifting dialogue. This year’s event will take place August 8 from 10am-2pm at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 220 N. Watterson St., Kings Mtn. Coach Rhodes, who lifted himself up from a challenging childhood in a single parent home and went on to become a respected educator and athlete, explained the primary purpose of the day. “For students to be successful they have to walk into class ready for the school year,” he said. “Many parents are unable

The event will make sure the kids get what they need.” Rhodes outlined the core principles of the endeavor. “’The three pillars the event is built on include education, motivation, and encouragement,” he said. “These will make sure kids feel good about themselves and it empowers them to become successful in life.” Camp Coach Rhodes has

Since then, it has averaged about five hundred kids. This year we are hoping for seven hundred.” At first, Rhodes paid for the supplies himself. Now, folks contribute their time and goods to the cause. “If anyone wants to help with school supplies, they can contact me,” he said. “We also need hair stylists and barbers to contribute their time and skills so the kids can look their best when they begin classes.” To help with the motivational aspect, Dallas Cowboys player (and personal friend of Rhodes) Jonathan Bullard will be on hand. Their relationship goes back to days when Rhodes coached Bullard at Crest High. Food will be a part of Camp Coach Rhodes. “We make sure everyone has enough to eat,” Rhodes says.

Coach Rhodes is counting on a table filled with supplies this year as well. Volunteers are needed to help with the food preparation. Coach Rhodes wants to give a shout-out to Mt. Zion Baptist for its role in the event. “Many thanks to them for letting us use their sanctuary building,” he said. The event is open to any school aged child in Cleveland County and surrounding counties. If you want to donate or volunteer, contact Coach Rhodes at 704-576-7321 or CampCoach Rhodes.com. Christmas in July at Turkey Ridge Over 35 vendors made it possible to knock out much of the holiday gift list on Saturday. It was all part of the Christmas in July event held at Venue at Turkey Ridge on Dixon Boulevard, Kings Mountain. The event was organized by Sunny Day Markets. Some

of the items for sale included handmade jewelry, crochet, leather work, boutique clothing, permanent jewelry, soaps and lotions and handbags. Author Eden Estabrook had books in the Arnie the Armadillo series available. If shopping worked up an appetite there were na-

chos, halal foods, lemonade, breads and slushies. The venue opened in 2021 hosting its first wedding in September. In addition to weddings, the Venue has gone on to host corporate events, reunions, quinceaneras and birthday parties.

The Bailey Center, a three-story facility built in 2009 that serves as the home of the college’s health sciences programs.

CCC Receives $1.7 Million to Expand Healthcare Workforce Training Cleveland Community College is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a $1.7 million grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) to support the expansion and renovation of the Bailey Allied Health and Science Center, increasing the college’s capacity to train the next generation of healthcare professionals. “This grant is an investment in the students, healthcare providers, and communities we serve,” said Dr. Jason Hurst, President of Cleveland Community College. “Our health sciences programs have experienced strong enrollment growth as demand for healthcare professionals continues to rise. This expansion will allow us to educate and train more students in our existing programs while maintaining the high-quality, hands-on learning experiences that prepare graduates to enter the workforce and make an immediate impact in healthcare settings throughout our region.” The grant will fund the renovation of approximately 10,000 square feet within the Bailey Center, a three-story facility built in 2009 that serves as the home of the college’s health sciences programs including Nursing, Medical Assisting, Radiography, Surgical Technology, Medical Sonography, and Medical Laboratory Technology. A key component of the project is the renovation of the two-story space that formerly housed CCC’s public access television channel, C19. The station’s relocation to the Jack Hunt Campus Center has made the space available for renovation and expansion, including the addition of a second floor, to provide

much-needed workforce training and instructional space. The Bailey Center currently serves students enrolled in some of the College’s most indemand healthcare programs. As enrollment in these programs continues to grow, additional instructional and laboratory space is needed to accommodate more students and expand hands-on training opportunities. The project received strong support from regional healthcare partners, including Atrium Health Cleveland and the Cleveland County Health Department, both of which provided letters of support as part of the grant application. In their letters, the organizations highlighted the need for additional healthcare professionals and the importance of expanding CCC’s capacity to prepare these skilled workers. “Partnerships with healthcare providers and public health agencies are critical to our success,” Hurst said. “Their support underscores the important role Cleveland Community College plays in developing a skilled healthcare workforce and meeting the growing needs of employers across our region.” The project aligns with the EDA’s mission to support economic development through strategic investments that strengthen local economies and create pathways to high-demand careers. By expanding training capacity, the renovated facility will help ensure that healthcare employers throughout Cleveland County and surrounding communities have access to a steady pipeline of qualified professionals. Earl Scruggs Center, American Songcatcher, and WNCW 88.7 Launch Roots Music Revue Series The Earl Scruggs Center and American Songcatcher are pleased to announce Roots Music Revue, a new live music and storytelling series debuting this fall. Produced in partnership with host Nicholas Edward Williams and regional public radio station WNCW 88.7, the series will bring audiences into the Great Hall at the Earl Scruggs Center for the live recording of a radio-style program exploring the people, places, and traditions that shape American roots music. Blending thoughtful conversation, regional music history, and live performance, Roots Music Revue offers a format reminiscent of beloved radio programs such as Live From Here, creating an intimate experience for both audience members and listeners. Each program will be recorded before a live audience at the Earl Scruggs Center and later broadcast across the region on WNCW 88.7. Hosted by Nicholas Edward Williams, creator and host of the acclaimed American Songcatcher podcast, the series will feature conversations with influential artists whose work reflects the rich and evolving traditions of roots music. Through interviews, stories, and performances, audiences will gain insight into the cultural influences and personal experiences that shape each artist's creative journey. Each show in the series will also include a live house band, made up of regional musicians. "At the heart of this live radio series is Appalachian music history,” said Williams. “The guest, the house string band and I will all work together to unravel a unique story of this rich heritage." The inaugural season includes three programs: Thursday, September 24 – Leah Song (Rising Appalachia) Leah Song is a musician, storyteller, and community builder best known as co-founder and vocalist of the internationally acclaimed folk collective Rising Appalachia. Drawing on Southern soul, Appalachian traditions, and folk music from across the Americas, her work blends song and storytelling while honoring the communities that shape those traditions. Through Rising Appalachia, Song has championed sustainable touring, partnered with grassroots organizations, and played a role in community relief efforts following Hurricane Helene in Western North Carolina. Thursday, October 29 – Travis Book (The Infamous Stringdusters) A Grammy Award-winning bassist, vocalist, songwriter, and producer, Travis Book is a founding member of The Infamous Stringdusters. Beyond his work with The Infamous Stringdusters, Book has become a catalyst for collaboration

in Western North Carolina, connecting musicians, creating opportunities for artistic exchange, and helping build a vibrant roots music community. His work bridges bluegrass traditions with contemporary innovation, helping to define the sound of modern acoustic music. The story of the ALWS Bat Boys and Girls By American Legion World Series

The crack of the bat, the roar of the crowd, the smell of hamburgers and hotdogs blanketing the air — baseball isn’t just a game in Cleveland County; it’s a heartbeat that has echoed through summer nights for generations. From the old ball field on West Sumter Street to the state-of-theart Veterans Field on the campus of Shelby High School, that heartbeat has never been stronger than in the hearts of the young boys and girls who have served as ALWS bat kids.

A Simple Idea It started around 2010, when former ALWS executive committee member Rusty Patterson watched a group of young boys — too young to be bat boys — chase foul balls at Keeter Stadium and trade them in at the concession stand for bubble gum. He saw their excitement and had an idea. Soon after Cleveland County was named the permanent home of the ALWS, Craig Langston stepped up as the first Bat Kid Coordinator and assembled the inaugural team: Parker Langston, Hayes and James Mabry, and Silas and Caleb Goss. Each boy received a jersey with “bat boy” on the back and a team assignment. What happened next surprised everyone. “The teams just took to these boys,” Craig recalls. “They really made. them feel part of the team.” A Ten-Year-Old’s

World Series Parker Langston was ten years old when his dad simply asked if the teams could use a couple of bat boys. He was assigned to the Tupelo, Mississippi squad and stayed with them through every game of their run — all the way to the championship. By the third game, a player asked Parker to warm up with them. Without hesitation, he grabbed the glove he’d been keeping in his bag “just in case” and ran onto the field. He could only throw half the distance of those high schoolers, but he warmed up with the team every game after that. Before the championship, they gave him the Tupelo team hat. After it, the whole squad signed his game ball. That title game went to extra innings. With the bases loaded in the ninth, ten-year-old Parker delivered what he was convinced was a game-changing pep talk — the team lifted him in the air and cheered. The next batter flew out. The game stretched to the thirteenth inning before Tupelo fell short, finishing World Series runners-up. Parker stood on that field, heart full. Several players went on to college ball, a few with Mississippi State. One — Hunter Renfroe — still plays in the MLB today. Parker says he brags about it every chance he gets. Today Parker is the Camps and Family Programs Coordinator at the Kentucky Science Center

Andrew and Coach Dane Peavy in 2016. in Louisville — working next door to the Louisville Slugger Museum, within walking distance of the Louisville Bats stadium. The game never really let him go. His advice to today’s bat kids: “Don’t be afraid to introduce yourself to the players and just be yourself. They are so happy you are part of their team.” Lives Changed on the Diamond The program grew steadily under a succession of dedicated coordinators — Jason Greene (2014–2017), Kimberly Dixon (2018–2021), and Jean and Chris Horne (2022–present). Applications now come in from

across the United States, growing from 27 in 2022 to 74 in 2025 and an astonishing 90 in 2026. Each year brings new touches: a live drawing event at Keeter Stadium, personalized jerseys, backpacks and bat kids’ photos on the big screen during team introductions. Andrew Tharrington (2016), now a senior at UNC–Chapel Hill, met Arkansas player Will McEntire as a bat boy — and years later watched him pitch against the Tar Heels in college. It’s the only time Andrew ever rooted against UNC. Grayson Gilbert (2017) received a championship ring from the Omaha, Nebraska team, flew out to visit the coach the following summer, and went on to release his debut music album, Welcome to My Storytime, now available on all streaming platforms. Avery Brown (2021) was welcomed so fully by the Hawaiian team that they gave her a matching team jersey, shared Hawaiian snacks, and introduced her to musubi during a rain delay. Texas Coach Ronnie Oliver, his wife Debbie, and Coach Willie Kemp remain like family to Avery to this day. The Heartbeat Continues In 2025, five former bat boys suited up for Post 82’s Junior Legion team, and two former bat girls played on the Legion Softball team. In childhood bedrooms from Shelby to Louisville, the keepsakes remain: signed baseballs on mantles, championship rings in display cases, and

more our hearts begin to reflect his character. Our attitudes change. Our priorities shift. Our hope becomes anchored in something eternal instead of temporary. Maybe today you’ve been looking down instead of looking up. Perhaps the weight of life’s challenges has caused you to lose sight of God’s faithfulness. If so, let this be your reminder to lift your eyes to the one who holds your future. The God who created the heavens is more than able to guide your next step. Hebrews 12:2 (AMP) says, “[looking away from all that will distract us and] focusing our eyes on Jesus, who is the Author and Perfecter of faith [the first incentive for our belief and the One who brings our faith to maturity], who for the joy [of accomplishing the goal] set before Him endured the cross, disregarding the shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God [revealing His deity, His authority, and the completion of His work].” Let’s Pray: Father, thank you for reminding me to lift my

eyes above my circumstances and keep my focus on you. When I become distracted by the worries of this life, help me remember that you are faithful and always in control. Draw me closer to you each day so my life reflects your love and brings glory to your name. In Jesus’ mighty name, I pray. Amen. CONNECTING TO GOD: If you’ve never established a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace today. Acknowledge your need for forgiveness and ask the Lord to cleanse you from all sin. Turn away from behaviors and attitudes that separate you from God. Surrender your life completely to Him and invite Jesus to become both your Savior and Lord. Seek out a Bible-believing church where you can grow spiritually and serve others. Begin cultivating a meaningful relationship with God by setting aside daily time for Bible reading and prayer. (Enjoy these devotionals by Danyale Patterson. Meet ROCKET

4 years old, mixed breed, 50 lbs.. Rocket was adopted as a puppy, but his family recently returned him because he became reactive toward their other dog. Since returning, his foster has been working with him. While he is still dog-reactive, he responds exceptionally well to his handler. If he reacts to another dog, he redirects and calms almost immediately with a command. Rocket is incredibly sweet and absolutely loves people. He enjoys playing fetch, splashing in the water, and spending time with his humans. He can also do well with other dogs once he’s had a proper introduction and time to get to know them. House-trained, not good with cats. Rocket is looking for an experienced adopter who will continue the structure and guidance that has helped him thrive. In return, he’ll be a loyal, loving, and fun companion. AT THE GRILL WORD SEARCH BARBECUE BURGER CHARCOAL CHICKEN DELICIOUS FLAME FLAREUP GRATE HEAT MARINADE PROPANE

As a young adult, I remember fishing the riverbank at Mr. MacDonald’s farm. (Yes, Old McDonald had a farm. Lol) He was an older man whose property ran along the river. I don’t remember how we first discovered this place, but it seemed to not upset him when we set up camp at his place. Many of those days he would come by and check on us and tell us a few stories about days gone GARY MILLER by. One of his tobacco barns stood only a few yards from where we fished, and it seemed no matter what time of year it was, he always had a few tobacco plants hanging inside. On occasion he would give us some leaves to take home and twist for a good homemade chew. His recipe was either to cut up a fresh apple and let it marinate the leaves for a few days, or to ease that twist of tobacco down into a jar of honey or molasses. This was my favorite. Alongside that same bank was his boat. It was one like I had never seen before, or since. I can only describe it as a flat bottom canoe, made of wood. It was long and not very wide or deep. And I can only remember a couple of places to sit down. Now I’m sure he had landed a few fish from this boat in times past, but now the boat was used for occasional transportation. When the weather was good and the river was calm, each Sunday, Mr. MacDonald would gather his long homemade oar, get in his homemade boat, and traverse the small river to the church he attended downstream. I’m sure he had other ways of getting there, but the boat was his preferred means. Now, as a younger fellow, I never asked him why he did that. I wished I had. As an older man, I can imagine the reasons. There’s no doubt the short journey prepared his mind for that morning’s gathering. The trip itself, for someone like you and me, and him, would be its own worship experience. I can imagine the sights he must have enjoyed as he prepared to meet with fellow believers. I can imagine how he must have been awestruck by the picture of God as painted by creation. I can imagine how the voices of each animal became God’s unique choir as they were sung in unison. The Biblical David must have taken that same trip, when he sung the words, “The heavens declare the glory of God!” It’s true. And even though that boat is perhaps rotted and ruined, the sights and sounds that declare the glory of God are still there for us, if we’ll put ourselves in the place to see and hear them.
