Wiener Works in Kings Mountain has been hotdogging it for over 50 years

If you took the hotdogs that Wiener Works in Kings Mountain sells in just one year and laid them end to end, they would stretch from its location at 1009 Shelby Rd. to the city of Shelby. Now, multiply that times the 52 years Wiener Works been in business and the trail would reach to Chimney Rock and Lake Lure.

Any way you measure it, that’s a lot of hot dogs and the reason for such stupendous sales is simple - good food, good service, good prices, and a hometown spirit to boot.

According to Wiener Works manager and owner Jason Jarvis, the business goes back to the mid-1970s when his father Bill and mother Debbie opened a Wiener King franchise in Kings Mountain.

“He was a district manager for McDonalds and wanted his own business,” Jason says. “But Wiener King went bankrupt and the place became Wiener Works in 1974. We are still a Wiener Works franchise but an independent one.”

Debbie passed away in 2020,

but Bill worked until he retired just three years ago at age 76.

“He worked 13-hours days,” said Jason.

Joining Jason, who started working at the restaurant at age 13, in keeping the place running these days are his brother Greg and sister Jackie.

“I’ve been here 30 years,” he says. “It’s challenging but I’ve been blessed.”

Wiener Works has an eclectic and plentiful customer base. A recent morning saw the place open at its usual 10am start time, and by 11am a steady stream of folks was coming through the doors.

“In addition to our Kings Mountain customers we have people come from as far away as Charlotte and South Carolina,” Jarvis says. “Some of them order a bunch of footlongs and take them out.”

The age range of customers is wide as well. Last Tuesday, eight-year-old Kyra Wilson and her grandmother stopped in for lunch.

“I really like eating here,”

Kayla said. “The French fries are my favorite.”

Jarvis pointed out an inter-

esting demographic fact.

“Some of our customers came here as children now they bring their own kids in.” he said.

Friday night football games at Kings Mountain High School really brings in a crowd.

“It’s one of our busiest times,” he said.

There are many factors in the Wiener Works success story - starting with the bill of fare.

A look at the menu reveals hot dogs done in a variety of fashions - including “The Works” with mustard, chili, onions, slaw and cheese, chili dogs, kraut dogs, corn dogs, burgers in a variety of configurations, bbq sandwiches, chuck wagons, ham and cheese, chicken sandwiches, fish sandwiches, fries, o rings, etc. etc. PS the wieners are high quality pork/beef blend items from Elm Hill.

What takes a lot of folks by surprise is the very reasonable prices for these eats. For instance, a Works dog is just two bucks, a basic burger just $1.85, small fries only $1.50 and small drink the same.

“We try to keep our prices low so everyone can afford it,” Jarvis said.

Wiener Works is also known for the friendly service from its staff of 15 employees.

“We have five full-time and nine part-time employees,” he said. “Most of our part-timers are student at Kings Mountain

High or Pinnacle Academy.”

Jarvis is looking forward to further Wiener Works success.

“We are trying to buy the building and property,” he says.

“We want to modernize the restaurant and pave the parking lot.”

But according to Jarvis some things will never change.

“We will always try to have fast service, good prices, and good food,” he says.

Kings Mountain Wiener works is open 10am-8pm Monday-Friday; and 10am to 4pm Saturday. Currently payment is cash only.

A brief history of the hot dog

(From Wikipedia)

The word frankfurter comes from Frankfurt, Germany, where pork sausages similar to hot dogs originated. These sausages, Frankfurter Würstchen, were known since the 13th century and given to the people on the event of imperial coronations, starting with the coronation of Maximilian II, Holy Roman Emperor, as King. "Wiener" refers to Vienna, Austria (German: Wien), home to a sausage made of a mixture of pork and beef. Johann Georg Lahner, an 18th/19th century butcher from the Franconian city of Coburg, is said to have brought the Frankfurter Würstchen to Vienna, where he added beef to the mixture and simply called it Frankfurter. Nowadays, in German-speak-

ing countries, except Austria, hot dog sausages are called Wiener or Wiener Würstchen (Würstchen means "little sausage"), to differentiate them from the original pork-only mixture from Frankfurt. In Swiss German, it is called Wienerli, while in Austria the terms Frankfurter or Frankfurter Würstel are used. It is not definitively known

who started the practice of serving the sausage in the bun. One of the strongest claims comes from Harry M. Stevens who was a food concessionaire. The claim is that, while working at the New York Polo Grounds in 1901, he came upon the idea of using small French rolls to hold the sausages when the waxed paper they were using ran out.

sweet and loving she is.

She would thrive in a calm, lowenergy home where she can feel safe and build confidence at her own pace. She may prefer to be the only dog so she can soak up all the love and attention.

Moe is 10 years old and around 12 lbs. She came to us alongside her two furry siblings after the heartbreaking loss of their dad, and she’s been showing us just how resilient and gentle her spirit is. With patience, love, and a little time, she will blossom into a truly wonderful and devoted companion. She’s currently working on house training and will occasionally use a pee pad.

Chicken Dinner Fundraiser

I’m pretty bummed right now. Turkey season remains closed in my home area for another week. That’s two weeks later than it used to be just a few years ago. For some reason, I thought it had only been pushed back one week, and I was already looking forward to a pre-Easter turkey meal. Now it feels like I’ll be rushed just to enjoy what’s left of the season. If I had known, I would’ve headed south and gotten started earlier. I’ll remember that next year. Or maybe I’ll just take advantage of the delay and do some early fishing before the season opens. But for now, my outdoor life has been reduced to mowing grass and taking a few bike rides. And honestly… I feel cooped up. There’s no doubt in my mind I was made for something beyond my present existence. I know it because of its absence. I feel it in the pull. In the yearning that wells up inside me. It reminds me of those little sea turtles that are born up in the weeds along the beach. The moment they break through the egg, they run towards the ocean. They have never been there, never seen it, and no one shows them the way to go. And yet they go. There are a thousand illustrations like that in nature. And then there’s you and me. C.S Lewis described it this way in Mere Christianity.

“Creatures are not born with desires unless satisfaction for those desires exists. A baby feels hunger: well, there is such a thing as food.

A duckling wants to swim: well, there is such a thing as water. Men feel sexual desire: well, there is such a thing as sex. If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world.

If none of my earthly pleasures satisfy it, that does not prove that the universe is a fraud. Probably earthly pleasures were never meant to satisfy it, but only to arouse it, to suggest the real thing.

If that is so, I must take care, on the one hand, never to despise, or be unthankful for, these earthly blessings, and on the other, never to mistake them for the something else of which they are only a kind of copy, or echo, or mirage.”

Lately, I have felt these urges in far more important things than turkey hunting. I watch the news. I scroll through social media posts. I see anger, vitriol, and contempt for anything good or Godly. Or worse, I see an apathy for anything spiritual. I see a world that increasingly looks foreign to the one I know exists. And yet the one I know exists, I have never seen. But I long for it. Not because I want to leave this world. But because this world no longer feels like home. Maybe that’s because home isn’t a place. It’s a Person and a people.

Homeowners can employ these all-natural strategies to protect their fruits and vegetables from lawn pests and critters.

• Plant gardens in raised beds. Though they’re not a fool-proof deterrent, raised beds can eliminate some garden infiltration by small critters that come up and under from the ground. A raised garden bed can deter rabbits, gophers, groundhogs, slugs, and some other crawling pests. Raised beds also are ergonomical and easily accessible.

• Prepare homemade insecticide. The environmental information site Treehugger provides information on making a homemade insecticide from vegetable oil and a mild soap. Use one cup of oil with one tablespoon of soap (such as Dr Bronner’s castile soap). Add this mixture to one quart of water in a spray bottle. This concoction can eradicate aphids, mites, thrips, and more by coating insects’ bod-

ies and effectively suffocating them. Soap-and-water sprays or even neem oil sprays work similarly.

• Sprinkle diatomaceous earth. Diatomaceous earth, commonly known as DE, is an abrasive powder comprised of fossilized algae diatoms. It’s commonly used as a filter medium in swimming pools, but also makes an effective pesticide. The material’s abrasive and absorbent qualities draw moisture out of insects, essentially dehydrating them to death. DE can be sprinkled around the base of plants, but will need to be reapplied after rain and watering.

• Space out plants. One way to reduce insect or animal pest numbers is to ensure ample space between plants. See PROTECT, Page 13

7 characteristics of modern houses

Homes contain a variety of components that appeal to homeowners with different ideas about the perfect place to call home. That starts with the style of a home.

Buildings are classified according to share components. A Craftsman style home will have a covered porch with a set of wide base columns, while a Cape Cod home is often defined by a gabled roof and dormer windows. Modern houses, which are sometimes called contemporary homes even though the terms are not interchangeable, will have their own sets of unique characteristics. Here’s a look at seven features that make modern homes unique.

1. Minimalist approach: Contemporary and modern homes both employ an approach that leans toward minimalism, including clean design lines. Spaces are open and airy without the clutter of too many ornate architectural details. While modern homes may have some curvature to their design, contemporary ones are all about an an-

gular look.

2. Neutral color palette: Modern homes tend to utilize a neutral color palette. Modern homes may use “earthy” elements, such as wood and brick, in ways that do not look rustic. Contemporary homes rely on a color palette of black and white with shades of gray or other neutral colors.

3. Geometric shapes: Modern homes have strong horizontal and vertical elements that showcase geometric shapes in their designs. Contemporary homes often have flat roofs, while modern homes may not.

4. Large, unadorned windows: Most modern homes showcase a lot of natural light by utilizing large windows that are not covered up by heavy window treatments or elements like shutters and thick trims. Large windows are the focus of the interior and shift attention to the view outdoors.

5. Open floor concept:

A hallmark of modern interior design, the open concept floor plan removes many of the walls that tend to separate common areas of a home. This helps to foster the spread of natural light and maintains the emphasis on simplicity of design.

6. Smart elements: Thanks to the proliferation of smart technology, smart homes are cropping up with greater frequency. While smart devices can be included in any home style, they tend to feel like they were designed specifically for modern homes. In a similar vein, modern homes may include

environmentally friendly elements, such as solar panels, upcycled materials, added insulation, and energy efficient lighting.

7. Updated kitchen spaces: The clean lines and attention to technology and open space generally extends to modern kitchens. Modern kitchens tend to feature efficient, top-tier appliances with additional storage and space amenities that keep the room from feeling cluttered.

While some may consider modern homes austere, many others are right at home among their clean lines and airy spaces.

Tips to pick the right plants for your landscape

Each year, gardening enthusiasts anxiously await the arrival of spring. Spring is a great season to plant new flowers, plants, grasses, and trees, making it a popular time of year to spend sunny days out in the yard.

Veteran gardeners may know their landscapes well and be able to pick the right plants on their own. Novices may need a little help as they look to give their landscapes a whole new look. The following are some helpful tips to help homeowners pick the right plants for their landscapes.

• Conduct a site evaluation. A colorful landscape featuring an array of plants and flowers can be eye-catching and add curb appeal to a property. However, where plants will be planted is a significant variable that must be considered before homeowners choose what to plant. The Center for Agriculture, Food, and the Environment at the University of Massachusetts Amherst notes that site evaluation is the first step when picking plants. A number of factors must be evaluated, including light availability; water availability; exposure to the elements, including wind and extreme temperatures; and competition from existing vegetation, among other things. Document these variables prior to picking plants. For example, take note of the area you plan to plant to see if it is full sun or partial shade, and then pick plants whose growing conditions align with those you observe.

• Look at more than looks. Aesthetic appeal might be what homeowners most desire from their landscapes, but that appeal is only achieved when the right plants are chosen for a space. If the wrong plants are chosen, they’re unlikely to thrive or they could threaten existing vegetation, thus compromising the overall appeal of the property. Native plants can often handle local weather conditions, so prioritize natives over more exotic plants whose key attribute is aesthetic appeal. If jawdropping aesthetic appeal is your top priority, speak with a

6 ways to make your garden more successful

Homeowners enjoy gardening for many different reasons. In addition to adding beauty to a property, gardens can offset grocery costs by yielding tasty produce. They also offer important habitats and food sources for both insects and animals.

local landscaping professional about which natives can provide that without compromising surrounding vegetation.

• Consider maintenance prior to planting. Maintenance is another variable gardeners must consider. Newly planted trees may require substantial watering until they’ve fully established their roots, and some homeowners may not have time for that. In addition, certain plants may require a considerable amount of pruning in order to create and maintain the look homeowners desire. Individuals must be willing to invest the time and effort necessary to maintain new plantings that require such diligence. If not, look for plants that don’t require much maintenance while keeping in mind that even low-maintenance plants still require some effort and attention.

• Consider local wildlife. If your lawn is routinely visited by local wildlife, then look for plants that won’t look like a meal to these welcome, if uninvited, guests. For example, if you routinely see deer lounging around in your backyard, look for deer-resistant plants. This is a good way to protect your investment, of both time and money, and ensure minimal wildlife traffic through your newly landscaped yard.

While growing a vegetable or flower garden can turn into a rewarding hobby, or even a passion, gardening also can be overwhelming — particularly when the results are less than stellar. Novice gardeners have scores of resources at their disposal, including the advice of gardeners who have made mistakes and learned from them. The following guidance can make home gardens that much more successful.

1. Start small.

You may have visions of an expansive garden growing rows of crops or acres of flowers. But it is smart to start small and build on what you find successful, which includes plants that thrive in your lawn and garden.

This also is beneficial if you are unsure of vegetable yields. Several blooming plants producing bushels of crops can be overwhelming, especially if you can’t get to harvesting or cooking them in a timely fashion.

2. Assess the soil.

Plants need nutrient-rich soil to encourage extensive root systems and produce strong, hardy plants, according to the gardening resource GrowVeg. Nourish soil with organic matter, such as manure, compost, shredded leaves, and natural mulch. Add this organic matter in the off-season to give it enough time to be incorporated into the ground before spring. You can have your soil tested for pH and other characteristics that make it friendly or averse to plants at a local garden center.

3. Arm yourself with knowledge.

Do you know how deeply to plant seeds and how far apart to space plants? Are you aware of the sunlight needs of certain flowers or plants? If not, read the packaging and do your research so your plants have the best chance of not only sprouting, but also surviving. Many people prefer to start seedlings indoors in late winter and then transfer those plants outdoors when they are stronger and more established.

4. Sit in your yard and observe.

Watch the way the sunlight dances over areas of your landscape. Take note of which areas get the most sun and shade. This will help you

plan what to plant and where to plant it. Vegetable gardens tend to need ample sunlight to bear pick-worthy produce. You can give plants a leg up by growing them in optimal conditions.

5. Choose hardy varieties.

Certain plants have been bred to thrive in your climate, including heat-tolerant plants for climates with sweltering summer sun. Consult with a local gardening center to figure out which plant zone you

are in and which plants will do best within that zone.

6. Use rainwater.

Rainwater contains fewer contaminants and additives than tap water, which can benefit garden plants. Collect rainwater in rain barrels and use irrigation systems to deliver it to the garden.

Home gardens can yield many gifts, from flowers to fruit. Beginners can utilize some time-tested strategies to increase their chances of planting a successful garden.

(1st Part of “April Fools: The Danger of Spiritual Foolishness” Series)

Many of us have played April Fools’ jokes or been on the receiving end of them. We laughed, we joked, and we moved on. But this month of April, we are going deeper, beyond harmless jokes, into the serious ways the Bible describes foolishness. The Bible’s definition of a fool comes from the Hebrew word sakal, which refers to someone who acts foolishly, senselessly, or without wisdom. It is not just about being silly; it is about living without regard for truth, wisdom, or God. The greatest form of foolishness, according to Psalm 14:1 (NLT) is this: “Only fools say in their hearts, ‘There is no God.’ They are corrupt, and their actions are evil; not one of them does good!” This is not just a statement spoken aloud; it is a condition of the heart. It is a life lived as if God does not exist, does not matter, or

is not involved.

However, the apostle exposes the fallacy of believing there is no God. In Romans 1:20 (NLT), he states, “For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.” Evidence of God is all around us. There are many reasons that point to the reality of God:

1. Philosophical Reasons

The very existence of life, purpose, and morality points to a Creator. Order does not come from chaos without cause.

2. Scientific Reasons

Creation reveals intentional design. The complexity of the universe, the human body, and nature all point to purpose: nothing is truly random.

3. Historical Reasons

The life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ are supported by historical accounts and eyewitness testimony that continue to stand the test of time.

4. Real-Life Experiential Reasons

God is still moving today. Documented medical miracles, answered prayers, and radical life transformations are living proof that he exists and is active. To deny God is not a lack of evidence; it is a rejection of truth. This month, we will uncover the dangers of spiritual foolishness and learn how to walk in wisdom.

Let’s Pray:

“Heavenly Father, you are worthy of my praise and adoration. My desire is to know you better. I pray that you will reveal yourself more and more to me. Remove blinders of doubt and unbelief. Help me see clearly the truth of the Bible and the truth of who You are. Protect me from error and deception. In Jesus’ mighty name, I pray. Amen.”

CONNECTING TO GOD:

If you’ve never established a

personal relationship with Jesus Christ, I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace today. Acknowledge your need for forgiveness and ask the Lord to cleanse you from all sin. Turn away from behaviors and attitudes that separate you from God. Surrender your life completely to Him and invite Jesus to become both your Savior and Lord. Seek out a Biblebelieving church where you can grow spiritually and serve others. Begin cultivating a meaningful relationship with God by setting aside daily time for Bible reading and prayer.
