Gaston Gem and Mineral Club to host

47th Annual Show March 14-15

Have you ever gone for a walk in the woods and come home with a pocket full of rocks? Whether you’ve built a collection over many years or you’re simply curious about what might be glittering in a creek bed, you’ll find plenty to discover at the Gem, Mineral and Jewelry Show in Gastonia on March 14–15 at the Gastonia Farmers Market. The show will be open on Saturday, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. and Sunday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Hosted by the Gaston Gem and Mineral Club, the annual event has become a wonderful family outing and one of the largest shows in the Piedmont. This year marks the club’s 47th show and its second year at its larger indoor home, the Gastonia Farmers Market. The show will feature 25 vendors offering a wide variety of items, including rough rocks and gems, cut specimens, handmade jewelry, and more. Admission is free.

Visitors can roll up their sleeves and try sluicing or watch a geode being cracked open to reveal the crystals inside. New this year is an educational area designed for all ages, where guests can learn more about rocks, minerals, and gems. Visitors can also bring their own mystery rocks, and club members will do their best to help identify them.

The show is the main fundraiser for the Gaston Gem and Mineral Club. Founded in 1977, the club is a nonprofit organization created to foster interest in geology, gems,

minerals and the lapidary arts. Today, it has approximately 125 members from Gaston and surrounding counties, and they have a wide range of interests. Some members specialize in topics such as fossils, luminescent minerals, or crystals. Others enjoy activities such as gem faceting, cabochon cutting, tumbling, and metalwork for finished jewelry.

“We have a welcoming and enthusiastic group of people at the Gaston Gem and Mineral Club,” says Eric Clymer, club president. “You can always find someone with similar rock-related interests who is willing to share their knowledge and experience.”

The club meets monthly at Lutheran Church of the Redeemer. Meetings typically include a presentation on a gem or mineral topic, time to share personal finds, and planning for upcoming field trips.

There are plenty of adventures to plan. North Carolina is home to more than 300 different gems and minerals, and the club organizes field trips for almost every month of the year. Members travel to public and private sites across the Southeast in search of treasures, but most trips are within about a two-hour drive from the Gastonia area. “The field trips and events are opportunities for us to bond as a community of like-minded individuals, despite our diverse ages and life experiences,” said Clymer.

In recent years, field trips have yielded

finds such as pink and red rubies in Marion, green emeralds around Hiddenite, deep red garnets in the mountains, and purple amethysts from several regional sites.

The group has also found clear and white quartz crystals at sites in North and South Carolina, and they even go gold panning.

The goal of the club is to share knowledge, learn new things, and experience the thrill of discovery together. That’s why annual dues are kept affordable at $20 per family or $15 for individuals.

The monthly meetings are free, and visitors are welcome.

Bring the family and join us at the Gem, Mineral and Jewelry Show on March 14-15. Enjoy the activities, explore the vendor booths, and meet some of the club members. It’s a great opportunity to discover whether the

Gaston Gem and Mineral Club is a good fit for you. Also, you can connect with us anytime online at gastongem.org, or on Facebook or Instagram.

The Gem, Mineral and Jewelry Show will be held on March 14–15 at the Gastonia Farmers Market. The show will be open on Saturday, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. and Sunday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Shown above is the

Dying Before You Rise

is where multiplication begins. However, God cannot multiply what we refuse to lay down. We want increase without surrendering. We want elevation without humility. We want resurrection without crucifixion. But there is power in dying first. Dying to pride makes room for humility. Dying to control makes room for trust. Dying to offense makes room for healing. Dying to comfort makes room for calling.

It’s Development

Pray This Prayer:

“Father, I worship and adore you. Forgive me for putting myself above your desires. Please help me to have a pure and obedient heart. I surrender all to you today. Make and mold me into the person you want me to be. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”

CONNECTING TO GOD:

love resurrection. We celebrate empty tombs. We shout about breakthrough and new beginnings, but we rarely talk about what comes first: the burial. In God’s kingdom, nothing rises that hasn’t first been buried. In I Corinthians 15:36 (ESV), Apostle Paul proclaims, “What you sow does not come to life unless it dies.” Jesus made a similar declaration but adds to it. In John 12:24 (NLT) he says, “I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat is planted in the soil and dies, it remains alone. But its death will produce many new kernels—a plentiful harvest of new lives.” In other words, a seed must fall before it flourishes. It must disappear into the dirt before it multiplies. And what looks like death is actually the beginning of life. Jesus didn’t use this illustration casually. He was describing the pattern of the kingdom - death to self! Seeds Fall Alone

There is a lonely part of surrender that no one applauds. The moment when God asks us to release something like our pride, our need to be right, our desire to control outcomes, our offense or our comfort. No crowd gathers for that moment. No one sees it but God. And yet, that

You and I cannot skip the burial season. If Jesus, the Son of God, embraced the cross before the crown, why would we expect another path? The burial is not punishment. It is positioning. The dirt is not rejection. It is development. If you feel buried in this season - unseen, misunderstood, stretched - do not despise it. Buried is not the same as forgotten. Buried seeds grow roots before they show fruit. Roots determine longevity. When you decide to surrender all to him, then you can proclaim like Apostle Paul in Galatians 2:20 (AMP), “I have been crucified with Christ [that is, in Him I have shared His crucifixion]; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body I live by faith [by adhering to, relying on, and completely trusting] in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself up for me.”

If you’ve never established a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace today. Acknowledge your need for forgiveness and ask the Lord to cleanse you from all sin. Turn away from behaviors and attitudes that separate you from God. Surrender your life completely to Him and invite Jesus to become both your Savior and Lord. Seek out a Biblebelieving church where you can grow spiritually and serve others. Begin cultivating a meaningful relationship with God by setting aside daily time for Bible reading and prayer.

“Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. We do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” –Hebrews 4:14-16

I’ve noticed lately how the fishermen are getting amped up for the spring tournaments. A recent trip to my local bait shop confirmed my suspicions. There were brochures everywhere promoting those upcoming events. But another thing I’ve noticed is how bad the weather has been lately. I guess it’s normal for this time of year, but there are usually some good weekends when the fishermen can get on the lake, find where the fish are, and experiment with what they might be hitting. If everything stays the way it is now there will be no early preparation. It will be practice as you go. There are, however, a few things that most anglers already have in their bag of tricks; namely that they have done this before. They will begin their pursuit at the places that have produced in times past. That doesn’t mean that success will be certain, only that they will be able to begin with a certain amount of confidence, which is crucial. In fact, one of phrases I’ve heard all my life when it comes to fishing, is “Fish with what you’re confident in.” That is, if you are casting some bait without the expectation of a fish biting it, you need to switch; no matter what someone else might tell you. Confidence is undoubtedly important because it affects so many other things. It affects the speed to which you fish, your concentration, and your overall attention you must have to set the hook. Really you can’t say too much about confidence. On the other hand, while confidence might win the moment, it might just lose the day and the tournament. If one has to choose between confidence and certainty, he better choose the latter and adjust his confidence. And this especially goes for things that hold more weight than a fishing tournament. It amazes me sometimes how individuals can be so set in their ways without any real confirmation that what they are settled on is valid. Many times their confidence comes from another individual who also has no foundation for his or her beliefs. They simply believe something because so and so said so – be it a friend or family member. Or this unwarranted confidence has come from a moment of success. For a fisherman it means that just because you had a good day with that bait before, it doesn’t mean it will work every time. Again, it is better to be certain than have confidence. Now, what about things of eternal consequence? If you have confidence and cannot adequately defend why you have such confidence, then you may be fooling yourself. Certainty will always come from a statement of fact based upon testable evidence. If this is not true in fishing, you may be casting in a bathtub. If this is not true in matters of your faith, you may wake up one day to find that what you put confidence in, left you holding an empty bag at God’s weigh-in. Gary Miller gary@outdoortruths.org

Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

John 14:1-3

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. –John 3:16-18
