Boiling Springs is a Cleveland County jewel that’s off the beaten path

Boiling Springs is most often known as the location of GardnerWebb University, but in many ways the town itself has much to offer. Not only is it a great place to live and work, its many amenities and proximity to outdoor activities and attractions makes it a destination town in every sense of the word. Boiling Springs is off the beaten path of US74 about eight miles from Shelby on NC150. With a population of only about 4,700 citizens, it has true small town flavor and feel.

Information found on the Town website reveals Boiling Springs takes its name from two underground springs that were a community gathering place around 1843. Back then, Boiling Springs had no railroads, no industries, few stores and no paved streets. However, in the early 20th century, things began to change. The Kings Mountain and Sandy Run Baptist

Associations began looking for a place to build their denominational high school. Boiling Springs was very interested in Christian education, and town became the site for the school. The school became the Boiling Springs High School, and the boarding institution opened for business in 1905.

School authorities felt that neither intoxicating drinks nor cigarettes should be sold near the school, so it was decided to ask the legislature to pass a bill to incorporate for a mile and a half in every direction. A bell tower located on the original school building was the center from which the mile and a half radius was drawn.

O. Max Gardner introduced the bill to incorporate the Town. The bill passed and the town was incorporated in 1911. The population at the time of incorpora-

tion was 250. D.J. Hamrick was the first mayor and D.S. Lovelace, E.B. Hamrick, C.M. Hamrick, J.L. Pruett and J.F. Moore were aldermen.

The Baptist boarding school is now Gardner-Webb University. The location of the springs is on Gardner-Webb University’s campus and the area around them was renovated to provide a place for people to meet or sit and reflect.

These days, Boiling Springs is a progressive small town where citizens and visitors alike can avail themselves of top-notch recreation,

shopping, dining, and other experiences all in a clean, safe environment.

Zachary Parker is the Town Manager in Boiling Springs. He’s an energetic and forward looking professional who grew up there. He’s a perfect fit for the job and a huge cheerleader for his hometown.

“We are the biggest little town in the county,” Parker says. “Our motto is ‘one town, one university, one community’,” Parker pointed out some of the things that make Boiling Springs a great example of a small town stay-

ing on top of things.

“We recently approved an Economic Development Plan as well as a Strategic Development Plan,” Parker said. “The Economic Development Plan was done by the International Economic Development Council which is based in Washington.”

The introductions for each document concisely state their aim. The Economic Development Plan begins- “The Economic Development Plan for Boiling Springs, North Carolina, presents a comprehensive strategy to foster sustainable

growth, enhance quality of life, and strengthen the local economy while preserving the Town’s cherished smalltown character. This plan synthesizes and builds upon the findings of several previously conducted studies and planning efforts, including the Town’s Land Use Plan, Downtown Master Plan, and Corridor Study. It also incorporates valuable insights from economic development experts and regional stakeholders.”

Here’s the Strategic Development Plan- Strategic Priority One — Growth and Vitality Boiling Springs, North Carolina will preserve its small town charm by pursuing strategic, respectful growth opportunities. Future actions will strengthen infrastructure management, guide purposeful land use planning, and support sustainable economic development.

The full text for both is available here- https://www. boilingspringsnc.gov/ Infrastructure development and maintenance keep Boiling Springs in tip-top shape.

“We want to make sure we have strong infrastructure,” said Parker. “For instance, we have a five-year road repair plan as well as a similar one for water and sewer,”

Small businesses are a backbone of the Boiling Springs economy.

“We want to be a small business ecosystem,” Parker said.

Parks are a big part of the Boiling Springs landscape- literally and figuratively speaking. A carefully thought-out Park’s Master Plan will see the city park expanded and improved.

Relating to parks- Just a few miles outside of town, Broad River Greenway is a woodland wonderland with a scenic river running thought it. The town is a partial owner of the Broad River Greenway and provides funding and maintenance assistance. The Broad River Greenway provides a 1,500-acre nature park type facility for the entire region. Facilities at the Broad River Greenway include trails, a playground, picnic shelters, horse trailer parking, and restrooms to name a few. Events at the Greenway range from visits by Santa at Christmas to the huge Carboard Boat Race each summer.

Spring is here and Boiling Springs has several upcoming public events planned to celebrate its arrival. A few of these

include: Pilates at the Park behind Town Hall Saturday, April 11; Yoga at the Park Sunday April 26; and Cruisin’ on College Car Show and Concert Saturday, May 9. Finally, public safety is an important part of Boiling Springs government. The police department has 11 fulltime and several part-time officers. The new chief is Brian DiYorio who took that post in October 2025 and combines experience with a forward-looking view of police work.

DiYorio believes that effective leadership comes from supporting and developing

others, not simply directing them.

“Just because I wear eagles on my collar, does not mean I know it all,” he said. “There is always room to grow, learn, and become better, and I believe that mindset makes both leaders and organizations stronger.”

DiYorio plans to expand community engagement efforts in Boiling Springs, including events that bring officers and residents together. One recent example was a fundraiser where officers helped wait tables to support a local service member deployed overseas.

“Building relationships is the key to everything we do,” DiYorio said. “Without the community, we cannot do our job. We are excited about where this department is going and the partnerships we are building along the way.”

Well, that’s a look at the Town of Boiling Springs where everyone is welcome and where Parker offers this “ya’ll come” invitation.

“We want folks to visit and experience our small-town charm in a blooming and vibrant community,” he said. “We are Cleveland County’s hidden gem.”

The Silence of Saturday

(4th Part of “Dying Before You Rise” Series)

There is a day we don’t talk about enough. We celebrate Friday because the price was paid. We celebrate Sunday because the stone was rolled away. But Saturday… Saturday is quiet. Saturday is the day in between, the space where the promise has been given, but the fulfillment has not yet appeared. It is the day where everything feels still, uncertain, and unresolved. For many of us, Saturday is where we live. The hardest day is the day God says nothing. After the cross, Jesus’ body was placed in the tomb. Matthew 27:66 (NLT) says, “So they went and made the tomb secure by putting a seal on the stone and posting the guard.” From every visible angle, the story looked finished. The disciples were grieving. Hope felt buried. The one they believed in now lay behind a stone.” Luke 23:56 (NLT) reminds us, “Then they went home and prepared spices and ointments to anoint his body. But by the time they were finished, the Sabbath had begun, so they rested as required by the law.” Even in

their grief, they had to sit in the stillness.”

Faith Grows in Silence

Anyone can trust God when the stone is rolled away, but real faith is formed when the stone is still in place. When there is no visible evidence. When heaven is quiet. 2 Corinthians 5:7 (NLT) says, “For we live by believing and not by seeing.” Silence stretches us. It deepens our dependence. It refines our trust. In the quiet, God is not absent. He is working beneath the surface. While the earth was silent, something eternal was taking place. The greatest victory in history was unfolding in a realm that could not yet be seen. What looked like the end was actually preparation for resurrection. So if you find yourself in a Saturday season, do not lose heart. Silence is not rejection; waiting is not punishment, and stillness is not absence. It is preparation. Lamentations 3:25 (NLT) says, “The Lord is good to those who depend on him, to those who search for him.

Pray This Prayer:

“Lord, I praise you as a faithful and ever-present God. Even in the silence, you are working. When I cannot see, help me to trust. When I feel forgotten, remind me

that you never leave me. Strengthen my faith in the waiting and teach me to rest in your timing. I surrender every promise, every burden, and every unanswered prayer to you. I trust that you are preparing something greater than I can see. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.”

CONNECTING TO GOD:

If you’ve never established a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace today. Acknowledge your need for forgiveness and ask the Lord to cleanse you from all sin. Turn away from behaviors and attitudes that separate you from God. Surrender your life completely to him and invite Jesus to become both your Savior and Lord. Seek out a Bible-believing church where you can grow spiritually and serve others. Begin cultivating a meaningful relationship with God by setting aside daily time for Bible reading and prayer.

Hunting and fishing are like other sports in at least one area. There are more failures than successes. Think about it this way. In baseball, if you only get a hit three out of ten times, you’re an all-star. In basketball if you consistently make four out of ten three-pointers, you are elite. In football, a quarterback who completes 65% of his passes is considered excellent. And that still means he misses one out of every three throws. And the guys chasing him?

A defensive end might rush the passer 500 times in a season and only get 12 sacks…and that’s considered a great season. The professional golfer misses the fairway 5060% of the time. And I’m not even gonna talk about the sport of being a husband. We’re wrong 100% of the time! (Did I say that?) I digress. But here’s another similarity between all these guys and gals who participate in these activities: we all keep returning. And here’s what makes this truth even more impactful. Most of us are not professionals at what we do. And yet, we too, keep going back. We may throw a club into the abyss or slam a fishing rod down in the boat, and we may even swear we’re never coming back and we’re going to take up gardening, but when the dust settles and when the cuss words that have been running around in our mind finally leave, we just go back. We do. It’s crazy.

Let me tell you what is also neat and crazy to me. Jesus picked 12 men to be His first disciples – His apostles. They were all different. Some were educated. Some were not. Some were aligned with the Roman government. Some fought it. Some were quiet. Some were loud. But there were several things that marked their lives with Jesus. One was that they continually failed, whether it was by simple misunderstandings or by their own misdeeds. Jesus continually had to explain things to them and manage their misdirected actions. But the other similarity they all had was that they kept coming back. Sure, Judas took his own life at the end of Jesus’ ministry, and all the disciples left when they thought Jesus had died. But while Jesus was alive and doing His work, these disciples kept coming back even after times of stupidity and failure. I think Peter summed it up when He answered Jesus’ question. Jesus asked the apostles. “Are you also going to leave?” And Peter said, “Lord, to whom would we go?” To be honest, I have been angry at God before. I have thrown a spiritual club and sworn I’ll never play again. But with the same heated voice, I always said to God. “God, I’d leave, but where am I going to go!?” And then my anger settles. My mind clears. And I keep coming back. Because I’ve learned like in most sports, failure is not the exception. It’s the rule. And God wants me (and you), no matter how many time we’ve failed or keep failing, to keep coming back.

Say goodbye to basic brunch

(Culinary.net) The same old brunch menu week after week can become tiresome and dull. It’s bland, boring and your tastebuds get used to the same flavors repeatedly.

It’s time to add something new to the table with fresh ingredients and simple instructions to enhance your weekend spread.

Try this recipe for an Easy Brunch Quiche that is sure to have your senses swirling with every bite. This quiche is layered with many tastes and a variety of ingredients to give it crave-worthy flavor.

To create this dish, start with one package of broccoli and cheese then microwave it for 5 minutes until heated through.

Add 12 slices of chopped bacon to a skillet. While cooking, add 1/2 cup of green onions. Cook for 2 minutes then add 1 cup of mushrooms to the skillet. Cook for 4 minutes and drain the grease. In a small mixing bowl,

combine four eggs and 1 cup of milk. Whisk together. Add egg mixture to the broccoli and cheese. Also add 1 cup of shredded cheese and stir the ingredients together.

In two separate pie shells, spoon in the bacon mixture

then pour the egg and broccoli mixtures over the top. Sprinkle with a little more cheese then bake for 35-45 minutes at 350 F.

With a range of ingredients from broccoli to bacon, this quiche is a brunch hero. While baking, the cheese gets all melty, and with every bite the mushrooms add texture and earthy flavor. The ingredients combine together to make something warm, hearty and fresh.
