Shelby Dairy Queen satisfying sweet tooths for over half a century

“I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream.”

That old saying definitely applies to the feeling countless folks in the Shelby area have satisfied for over 50 years at the Dairy Queen at 814 S. DeKalb St. Not only does the Shelby DQ have an amazing array of ice cream treats, it’s also known far and wide for their delicious hot dogs, burgers, and other hot foods available from the grill.

According to Cleveland County History blog at Wordpress, the first Dairy Queen in Shelby opened in 1953. It was operated by William and Edna Mae Aaron. It was located at 620 S. Lafayette St. Circa 1959, the business was moved to 100 Interchange Blvd. The Aarons operated the DQ until 1965 when it was sold to Gordon and Hazel Bell.

The Bells sold it to Cecil and Millie Rachels in 1971. The Rachels also owned Twin Pigs restaurant on S. Dekalb Street.

After Cecil’s death in 1975, his wife Millie married Bill Nettles but continued to work in the restaurant until son Milton Rachels took ownership.

Now, over half a century later, Milton is still at the helm of the Shelby Dairy Queen.

Milton talked about the early

“I was 21 years old when daddy bought the franchise,” Milton said. “I did every job. I waited on customers, mopped, cleaned the bathrooms and cooked. Back then, we just sold ice cream, hot dogs, and chips. In 1974, we got a grill and started serving hamburgers.”

The DQ has gone through several moves and building styles.

From 1972-1977 the DQ was housed in a building with the iconic Eskimo on top. Wendy’s bought that property and paid the Rachels enough to move down the hill to S. DeKalb St. and into a building with a red roof and chaletstyle of architecture.

The current, “modern” style building was constructed in 2008.

No matter the architecture or location, folks have flocked to Shelby DQ in droves. According to Rachels, the Shelby DQ has been number one in North and South Carolina sales for the last 18 years.

Going to Shelby DQ is also a generational whose parents brought them in when they were children,” Rachels said. “Now, those former children are bringing their grandchildren in.”

Rachels shared a heartwarming story about times when the

“We just had a sliding window where people would place their orders,” he said. “Sometimes I would let customers hand me the kids through the window and I would let them

From 1972-1977 the Shelby Dairy Queen looked like this one in Charlotte, which is the oldest one in North Carolina. The first and oldest Dairy Queen in NC is located at 2732 Wilkinson Blvd in Charlotte, built in 1947. Opened by Preston and Irene Aaron, this location is the third oldest in the Southeast and remains in operation as a classic walkup, non-grill stand, featuring a historic “Eskimo girl” sign. pull the lever to get their ice cream.”

Making and keeping the Shelby DQ going is a labor of love- with equal emphasis on both words.

“In the early years it was hard to make any money,” Rachels said. “Sometimes we were on the edge of bankruptcy, but we kept at it. It was a seven day a week, 12hours a day job. It took commitment and dedication from the whole family, especially my wife Rhonda who passed away ten years ago.”

These days, Milton’s two daughters Lynne and Kristen run the store, but he isn’t ready to hang it up. Nearly every day he is at his office next door.

“I like staying busy and have always enjoyed doing this,” he said. “Sometimes I help Lynne and Kristen but now I mostly do paperwork.”

Rachels is easy going enough, but he does have one firm rule.

“Lunch is at 12:00 every day,” he says. “I can’t postpone it for an hour or a day. If equipment breaks or employees are out or I am not well. Lunch is at 12:00 every day.”

But the Shelby DQ is about more than selling ice cream and food. According to Lynne, they are also about being a contributing, caring, member of the community.

“We try to give back as much as we can,” she said. “We take part in the Children’s Miracle Network and Feeding Kids in Cleveland County programs. We also help with food donations at Thanksgiving and donate ice cream to schools.”

Milton is proud of Shelby DQ’s place in the fabric and history of the town and wants to keep it going as long as possible..

“Dairy Queen is such an institution,” he said. “I want to keep the tradition alive in Shelby and in our family too.”

A Brief History of Dairy Queen Corp

In 1938, near Moline, Illinois, J.F. McCullough and his son, Alex, developed the dairy product millions have come to know as Dairy Queen soft serve. The McCullough’s innovation was the beginning of today's system of more than 5,700 Dairy Queen and Dairy Queen/ Brazier stores in the United States, Canada, and many other countries in Europe, Central America, the Far East, and the Middle East. The McCulloughs arranged to test their new product in an ice cream retail shop in Kankakee, Illinois,

owned by Sherb Noble. Noble held an “All You Can Eat for 10 Cents” sale on an August afternoon. More than 1,600 people lined up to try the new treat, and the McCulloughs knew they had an exciting business opportunity. All they needed now was an efficient way to dispense their soft serve product -- and they soon located a freezer, invented by Harry Oltz of Hammond, Indiana, which could produce a continuous flow of the product. J.F. McCullough often referred to the cow as “the queen of the

dairy business”. Thus, the Dairy Queen name originated. The first Dairy Queen® store, owned by Noble, opened in 1940 in Joliet, Illinois.

Today, there are over 5,700 Dairy Queen ® stores throughout the world and Dairy Queen is much more than a single product. Dairy Queen is a place where a variety of products are sold including not only DQ soft serve products, but also the Brazier line of hot foods. Dairy Queen is the largest seller of soft frozen dessert products in the world.

The very first national Dairy Queen store was located at 501 North Chicago Street in Joliet. (Black Wax Cafe Photo)

Overcoming fear and moving forward

Life can have some scary moments. We have all been there or may be there at any given time. Sickness scares us. Dealing with a debilitating illness is scary. Cancer is scary. Heart disease is scary. Dying is scary. We fear having enough food, money, housing and transportation. We fear what our children might have to face. We can all name numerous fears that most of us share in some way.

of crashing your car and hurting yourself or someone might prevent you from driving 90 mph. Or, maybe you fear the police pulling you over. This is a healthy fear. Fear of diving into shallow water is healthy. You might break your neck, so it’s better to find a safe place to dive if that’s what you want to do. You don’t want to just blindly put your hand under a big rock. There might be something there you really don’t want to find. Certain fears are healthy and might prevent us and others from being hurt.

failure prevented him from trying to increase its worth.

There is some risk to everything. You don’t know for sure what life will bring when you marry, start a business, have a child or simply drive to the grocery store. If we don’t move forward and try we will never know.

We have all heard that it’s better to try and fail then to fail without ever trying. If you try you will at least know. It may be a success or a life learning experience. We have a lot of those life learning experiences. Education is seldom cheap.

Yet, we can’t live our lives in fear. Fear immobilizes us. There is no going forward when we are stuck in fear. It’s difficult to get through the day if we are shaking in fear. Fear often prevents us from moving forward in a career, marriage or even buying anything. When you look at the cost of buying a new house and a 30-year mortgage to pay for it, it can be scary. Having any kind of surgery can be daunting. A certain amount of fear is healthy. The fear

We have to live our lives with common sense and with willingness to trust God in faith. Without faith it is impossible to please God. In the parable of the talents Jesus told, the first two servants were commended because they increased the talents entrusted to them by their master. The third servant was scolded because he was afraid to invest or increase the worth of his talent. His fear of

Today, move forward and keep this in mind:

“If God be for us, who can be against us?” Often our biggest enemy is ourselves. We fret, we worry and we dread. There comes a time when we trust God and move forward.

Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ

As I look back on this last deer season, it seems that bad news could be the theme. I hunted hard but my effort only produced minimal results. If I had to compare the hours in the stand to my harvest ledger, I would definitely be in the red. What makes it even worse is I knew I was in a place where some big bucks lived. In fact, I missed my opportunity at one of those bucks because I couldn’t get my crossbow up before said buck left. Another bummer was when I arrowed a ten-pointer but was never able to find him. I think he’s still alive. At least I hope he is. When I think about it however, I can’t remember a year that was marked by more successes than failures. The truth is bad news is a lot more normal than good news, and it’s easier to find. It’s certainly that way in most areas of life.

One of my favorite evangelists of times past was a black man by the name of E.V. Hill. The way he preached could make me confess sins I’d never committed. He tells a story about a woman in his church who always sat on the front row. Her nickname was Eighteen Hundred. It was given to her because she was so old that everyone thought she must have been born in the 1800’s. Everyone loved Eighteen Hundred. Author, Shane Claiborne, tells how E.V Hill shared the story with him. Every Sunday old Eighteen Hundred would sit in her usual spot in the front row. As Pastor Hill started preaching, she would start muttering, “Get to the good news, Pastor: get to the good news”. And her commentary would get louder and louder as the sermon progressed. The longer he talked, the louder she got. He would be talking about how Jesus died on Friday, and she’d yell back, “Don’t leave him there. Get to the empty tomb on Sunday.” He’d be talking about how hatred, sin, and racism are still alive today. And she’d shout back, “Move on Pastor. Get to the good news!” Eventually he would get to the good news, and she would shout “Amen!” at the top of her lungs.

I think about all that Eighteen Hundred went through in her life. Racism, slavery, poverty, and the likes. If anyone ought to wallow in the bad news it ought to be her. But Eighteen Hundred had not only found a story of bad news that ended in good news, but she also wanted to make sure it always ended the right way. It was this good news that overcame all the bad news she had endured in her life. Friend, I know the world is full of bad news. But it always has been. The gospel, however, is good news, and it is good news for everyone who hears it. So, don’t forget, it’s all right to recognize all the bad things that may be going on, but don’t end the story on Friday. Sunday is coming.

When Obedience Looks Like Loss

(3rd Part of “Dying Before You Rise” Series)

There are moments in life when doing the right thing does not look victorious. In fact, sometimes obedience makes you look defeated. We often imagine that following God will lead to clear success, visible progress, and affirmation from others. But the story of the cross reminds us that obedience does not always look impressive in the moment. Sometimes it looks like a loss.

foolish to others. When we choose integrity over compromise, forgiveness over revenge, humility over pride, or obedience over comfort, people may not understand our choices. They may even question our wisdom or even attack us like they did to Jesus.

Luke 23:23-25 (NLT) says, “But the mob shouted louder and louder, demanding that Jesus be crucified, and their voices prevailed. So Pilate sentenced Jesus to die as they demanded. As they had requested, he released Barabbas, the man in prison for insurrection and murder. But he turned Jesus over to them to do as they wished”. Jesus, the Son of God, stands before crowds who once praised him. The same people who witnessed his miracles now mock him. He is falsely accused, beaten, and sentenced to death. From a human perspective, the cross looked like failure. But Heaven saw something entirely different.

Looks Can Be Deceiving

Sometimes obedience places us in positions that look

I Corinthians 2:7-8 (NLT) says, “No, the wisdom we speak of is the mystery of God - his plan that was previously hidden, even though he made it for our ultimate glory before the world began. But the rulers of this world have not understood it; if they had, they would not have crucified our glorious Lord.” The cross reminds us that appearances can be deceiving. Heaven was working while earth was mocking. While the crowd jeered and soldiers laughed, redemption was unfolding. Every moment on that cross was accomplishing something eternal. Sin was being defeated. Salvation was being secured. What looked like the worst moment in history was actually the turning point of history. God often works the same way in our lives. The seasons that appear the most confusing, painful, or misunderstood may actually be the moments where God is shaping something eternal within us. The cross teaches us that what looks like defeat today may be the very thing God uses to bring life tomorrow.

Pray This Prayer:

“Lord, I praise you as the omnipotent, all knowing God. Your thoughts and ways are higher than mine. I don’t always understand what you are doing or even why you are doing it. However, I trust you and I know that you know what is best. Help me to see with the eyes of the Spirit, especially when I am going through difficulty. I love you. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.” CONNECTING TO GOD:

If you’ve never established a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace today. Acknowledge your need for for-giveness and ask the Lord to cleanse you from all sin. Turn away from behaviors and attitudes that separate you from God. Surrender your life completely to him and invite Jesus to become both your Savior and Lord. Seek out a Bible-believing church where you can grow spiritually and serve others. Begin cultivating a meaningful relationship with God by setting aside daily time for Bible reading and prayer.

CROSSWORD PUZZLE

For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me.
