Not many firms can boast of having been in business for half a century, but Webb Chemical & Paper Co. in Shelby is marking that milestone in 2026.
The company was officially founded on October 1, 1976, by Huey and Freida Webb. Sadly, Huey passed away on Feb. 15, 2015, but Frieda still carries the torch forward and recently reminisced on how they built the firm together from a hand to mouth beginning into the $15 million in annual sales cleaning and paper supply powerhouse it is today.
“Huey was driving a truck and gone a lot,” Freida started out.
“His father passed away and he wanted to be home more so he could spend time with his family. He took a job with Harrill Chemical and Paper driving local delivery. The job wasn’t working out. One day he told me he was going to go in business for himself. I thought, oh, Lord. His idea was to approach the people he had been delivering to for Harrill’s and offer them better service. We had four thousand dollars between us. He bought a 20-foot box truck and that’s how we started.”

er.
“I was working for other folks during the day and doing the paperwork for Huey at night,” she said. “Our customer base started growing, and so I decided to stay at our office full-time.
At first, the going was tough, but Huey and Freida were tough-

Abernathy, St. in Shelby. Then we moved to 724 W. Marion St where we were for 26 years. It was 25,000 sq, ft. One of our first customers included Uni-Source out of Charlotte. Huey would deliver products like toilet paper, tissue, paper towels, and janitorial supplies for them.”
Other early customers Huey and Frieda had that launched the company into bigger and better things included Stowe Mills, Pharr Yarns, Henredon Furniture, and Leviton electric products.
As the business grew, so did revenues. These days, Frieda estimates annual sales at $1516 million. From the 1,000 sq. ft. former gas station structure, the company now operates out of a beautiful building at 2500 W. Dixon Blvd. with a cavernous 60,000 sq. ft warehouse. The fleet of trucks now numbers eleven.

“We have fifty-five employees now,” Frieda said. “That includes two managers, nine office workers, five service technicians, ten in the warehouse, ten drivers, and nineteen sales staff.”

“We offer around four thousand paper products, cleaning chemicals, bubble wrap, all types of packaging tape, and cartons,” Frieda said. “We service, schools, nursing home, restaurants, hotels, motels, healthcare, and facilities management, to name a few,”

That

a
come
when collegiate and professional players are battling it out in their respective playoffs with an end goal of winning a championship.
Watch parties have become a game day tradition for millions of football fans, and it’s customary to provide some delicious food when hosting such get-togethers. Chicken wings and nachos might be must-have foods for adults come game day, but it’s important to provide something special for young fans as well. This year, playoff party hosts can whip up these tasty “Football Cake Pops” from Lines+Angles for young fans.
Football Cake Pops
Makes 30 servings
3-1 2 cups cake our
2 cups granulated sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 2 teaspoon salt
1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
1 cup buttermilk, at room temperature
4 large eggs, at room temperature
2 large egg whites, at room temperature
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 2 cup prepared chocolate frosting
2 to 2-1 4 lbs. milk chocolate
3 tablespoons shortening
40 candy sticks White icing, for decorating
1. Preheat oven to 350 F. Lightly butter and our two 8- or 9-inch round cake pans.
2. In the bowl of your stand mixer, sift or whisk together the cake our, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Add the butter and half the buttermilk. Beat with the paddle attachment on a medium-low speed until combined and smooth, about 3 to 4 minutes.

3. In a medium sized bowl, with a fork, whisk together the eggs, egg whites, the rest of the buttermilk, and the vanilla to combine, just until eggs are broken up. Add the egg mixture to the batter in 3 additions, mixing on medium speed for 2 minutes after each addition, being sure to scrape down the sides of the bowl frequently.
4. Divide the batter evenly between the two pans, and bake on the middle rack of the oven for 35 to 40 minutes or until a toothpick or skewer inserted into the center comes out clean. Let cool in pans until they are cool to the touch, then turn out of pans and cool completely on wire racks.
5. Make sure the cakes are completely cool before you attempt the cake pops, otherwise your frosting will melt and you may have some trouble rolling intact balls.
6. Put your baked cake in a large mixing bowl. Use your hands to crumble the entire cake. Add about half of the chocolate frosting to the crumbled cake. The frosting is what acts as a glue to hold the cake balls together. Use your hands to mix the frosting evenly throughout the crumbled cake mix until the cake mix is well moistened. Your cake mix should be moist enough to shape into a large mound and keep its shape.
7. Roll your cake mix into 11 2inch, football-shaped cake balls using the palms of your hands. You should be able to get 30 to 35 football-shaped balls from a single batch of cake mix.
8. To prepare the chocolate shell,

pour milk chocolate into a microwave-safe bowl and melt on 50 percent power for 4 minutes, or more time if necessary.
9. Pull out your melted milk chocolate and stir thoroughly with a spoon until completely smooth. Once smooth, add shortening to the chocolate to thin out the consistency a bit. Stir thoroughly again.
10. Take a candy stick and dip into the chocolate about 1 inch and place it into the center of your cake ball on the top. This will act as a glue keeping your cake pop and stick attached. Continue for all cake pops. Wait 10 minutes for the chocolate to harden on the stick and on the cake pop.
11. Now you are ready to coat your cake pops in the chocolate. Place the pop in the chocolate at a sideways angle with one hand. Using the other hand, spoon the chocolate mixture all around the pop. Try to do this as quickly as possible before the chocolate begins to harden and get lumpy.
Once you have evenly coated the pop, gently tap the stick on the side of the bowl to get off any excess chocolate that would drip.
Once the chocolate shell hardens, decorate the football pops with grip marks using the white icing. Let the icing dry and serve at room temperature.

Frieda’s mental list of products barely scratches the surface of what’s there, stacked high on shelves, and spread across the floor. Just before the January 24-25th ice storm, there was even a large pallet of ice melter pellet bags ready for shipment.
Just a smattering of the places the company ships to include Asheville, Charlotte, Forest City, Mt. Airy, Hickory, Morganton, and York, S.C. Business has been so good, the company recently opened a branch in Johnson City, Tennessee.
How did all this growth take place? Frieda laid it out.
“It was a lot of long hours and hard work,” she said. “Many days Huey and I would start at 8am and work til 9:30pm. We worked on the weekends. Sometimes we did not have the money to keep going,

but we did. We never gave up. We stuck with it. We did the best we could. The Lord blessed us. We did not waste money on foolishness. We scrimped and saved. We had some hard times, but it all worked out.
I look around me now and I can’t believe it.”
Even though she’s been at it for half a century, Frieda still shows up for work every day, carrying on the legacy she and
Huey started long ago. She doesn’t have a huge, fancy desk and leather chair. Just a cubicle up front piled high with papers and a computer screen.
“I enjoy it,” she says with a smile. “It keeps me busy, and I don’t plan to retire if I can help it.”

There’s a reason the song What’s Love Got to Do With It still resonates decades later.

DANYALE PATTERSON
Tina Turner’s voice carried more than a melody; it carried the ache of a heart that had learned to protect itself. The movie told the story even more clearly: love had become associated with pain, control, and survival. When love wounds you deeply enough, it’s easy to question whether love is even worth trusting anymore. Many of us don’t say it out loud, but we’ve asked the same question in quieter ways. What does love really have to do with my faith? With obedience? With healing? When your heart has been broken, love can feel risky, unreliable, and exhausting. We begin to guard our hearts not with wisdom, but with walls. However, God wants us to know true love by trusting in and accepting Jesus Christ. I
John 4:16 (NLT) says, “We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in his love. God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them.”
Heartbreak
The Bible doesn’t pretend hearts don’t break. Psalm
34:18 (NLT) says, “The LORD is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed” which tells us two important things: broken hearts are common, and God does not distance himself from them. He draws nearer. Love, in God’s hands, is not a weapon; it is a healer. Worldly love often says, “Protect yourself at all costs.” Godly love says, “Trust me with your heart.” That doesn’t mean ignoring wisdom or boundaries. It means allowing God to redefine love so it no longer looks like fear, control, or selfpreservation. Love begins to look like truth, safety, correction, patience, and surrender. A broken heart doesn’t disqualify you from love; it invites God into a deeper work. When we allow him to tend to our wounds, love stops being something we fear and becomes something we reflect. We begin to love not from emptiness, but from wholeness. So what does love have to do with it? Everything. Love has everything to do with how we heal, how we obey, how we forgive, and how we follow God forward.
Pray This Prayer:
“Father, you are the very essence of love. I praise you with my whole heart. I embrace your love. I ask that you heal the places where
love has been misunderstood and misused in my life. Teach me what love truly looks like through your word and your presence. Restore my heart so I can love the way you intended. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”
CONNECTING TO GOD:
If you’ve never established a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace today. Acknowledge your need for forgiveness and ask the Lord to cleanse you from all sin. Turn away from behaviors and attitudes that separate you from God. Surrender your life completely to Him and invite Jesus to become both your Savior and Lord. Seek out a Bible-believing church where you can grow spiritually and serve others. Begin cultivating a meaningful relationship with God by setting aside daily time for Bible reading and prayer.

Day celebrants who can’t wait for the arrival of February 14 each year may want to add India to their must-visit list of travel destinations. That’s because Valentine’s Day celebrations in India have now expanded into a week-long festival sometimes referred to as “Valentine’s Week.” Each day of the week between February 7 and February 14 has its own unique designation. Kanga came to us back in January 2022 from our local shelter with her babies in tow. She was such a devoted mama, and we estimated her to be about 2 years old at the time. Her puppies have all found wonderful homes, and now it’s Kanga’s turn.

There’s no doubt what we do makes an impression on our young people and those who look up to us. Just as I remember buying my first new gun, I also remember my first new knife. Not only was I enamored by the knife itself, but I was also very interested in the paperwork that came with it. While most would only throw away the unnecessary stuff, I made it a point to find out about my new Buck knife. It talked about how to take care of it and how to sharpen it. But what caught my attention was the message from Al Buck. Here is how it read.

Now that you are family, you might like to know a little more about our organization. The fantastic growth of Buck Knives was no accident. From the beginning, management determined to make God the Senior Partner. In a crisis, the problem was turned over to Him, and He hasn’t failed to help us with the answer. Each product must reflect the integrity of management, including our Senior Partner. If sometimes we fail on our end, because we are human, we find it imperative to do our utmost to make it right. Of course, to us, besides being Senior Partner, He is our Heavenly Father also; and it’s a great blessing to us to have this security in these troubled times. If any of you are troubled or perplexed and looking for answers, may we invite you to look to Him, for God loves you.
“For God so loved the world that he gave His only begotten son; that whoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” John: 3:16
Wow! What an impression that made on a teenager. I thought big companies and successful people surely had no need for God. I was wrong and I never forgot that simple message purposefully placed in that little box. Decades later, every time I go to buy a knife, I’m reminded of that day that someone cared enough to be unashamed of their faith and who also understood that all we have and all we do is to be used to reflect the goodness and grace of a Heavenly Father. Since that time, I have met other businesses and their owners who feel this same responsibility and apply it different ways. Their subtle but powerful message is their own unique way of recognizing their own Senior Partner.

Friendship is a two-way street. If a relationship is totally dependent on one person it won’t last very long.
If you have to make all the effort a friendship will soon die. One person, does not make a friendship, marriage or any kind of relationship.

least one family member who always finds a way to be sour, hateful or critical and never misses a chance to complain about something. Why do we put up with these people? I don’t have a good answer but I know many of us deal with these personalities.
The telephone works both ways. Text messages and emails work both ways. Telephones are made to make calls but they also receive calls. If you have to make all the calls, make all the effort to connect with someone then you will become tired and give up.
This may be why so many people have so few friends. If you want a friend, be a friend. If you want to be connected to your marriage partner then every day it’s mutual communication and companionship.
If you want help, then help others. If you want love, then love others. Whatever you invest in will typically come back to you.
We’ve all had experiences with the family member who never comes to see us or shows any interest in anything we are doing. We’ve all invested in loved ones and given until we are blue in the face. There always seems to be those that we have tried to reach out to, befriend and love but who ignore us or even bite us.

Often, people are the meanest to close family and friends. A spouse may treat another spouse badly because they believe they can get by with acting so badly. Relatives often do the same thing. People get by with it for a little while but eventually loved ones and friends will begin to pull away. In time, mean people will find themselves very lonely. You can’t treat others badly and get by with it forever. It will come back to you. Don’t waste your life constantly trying to love the people who shrug you off. Move on!
This is not rocket science or brain surgery. Return communication. Don’t act like you are King Tut and are too important to make phone calls. Visit with others and respond to messages, texts, etc. Reach out to others and show yourself friendly.
Of course, there is a chance that you love being in isolation and prefer to just stare at the walls or television. You have the right to make that choice, as long as you don’t mind living with that choice.
