Earl Scruggs Center to host

2026 Remembering Earl Concert

Concert features

Rhonda Vincent and The Rage and Darin & Brooke Aldridge

The Earl Scruggs Center will host the 2026 Remembering Earl Concert on Saturday, April 18, at the Crest High School Auditorium, bringing two powerhouse bluegrass acts to Cleveland County for an unforgettable evening of music honoring the life and legacy of Earl Scruggs.

The concert will feature Rhonda Vincent and The Rage and Darin & Brooke Aldridge, artists with deep roots in bluegrass who reflect the spirit of Earl Scruggs himself. The annual Remembering Earl Concert serves as a major fundraiser for the Earl Scruggs Center, supporting exhibits, live music, educational programming, and ongoing preservation efforts at the Earl Scruggs Homeplace.

“Remembering Earl is both a celebration and a homecoming,” said Mary Beth Martin, Executive Director. “It brings together world-class musicians and our community to honor Earl’s legacy while directly supporting the work that keeps his story and music alive for future generations.”

Funds raised through the concert help sustain a wide range of activities at

the Earl Scruggs Center. In early February, the Center will unveil new interactive exhibits designed to engage visitors of all ages. In March, the Center will host the second Earl Experience Banjo Camp, welcoming banjo players from across the region for immersive learning and connection.

The Center also presents live music year-round through its Center Stage Concert Series, along with additional cultural programming and special exhibits that explore the music, history, and stories of Cleveland County and the region. The Earl Scruggs Center is also deeply involved in the annual Earl Scruggs Music Festival, helping celebrate Earl’s legacy on a national stage while drawing thousands of visitors to Uptown Shelby each year.

Educational initiatives continue to grow, led by the Bluegrass Ambassadors Program, which serves more than 1,000 students annually. In 2025, the program expanded beyond Cleveland County to include students in Rutherford and Polk counties, using music as a bridge to cultural understanding and creative expression. Additional offerings include beginner and intermediate youth guitar and banjo camps held each summer.

The Remembering Earl Concert begins at 6:00 p.m., with doors opening at 5:00

p.m. Tickets to the show are now available. A limited number of VIP packages are also available and include premium seating along with an invitation to an exclusive Encore After Party at the Earl Scruggs Center following the show.

Tickets may be purchased online through the Earl Scruggs Center’s website at https://earlscruggscenter. org/event/2026-rememberingearl-a-fundraiser-for-the-earlscruggs-center/. For more information, call the Center at 704.487.6233 or visit www. earlscruggscenter.org.

Through exhibits, live music, education, and preservation, the Earl Scruggs Center celebrates not only Earl Scruggs’ groundbreaking contributions to American music, but also the community that shaped him. The annual

Your Heating & Cooling Experts Since 1977

Remembering Earl Concert plays a vital role in sustaining this work.

A

I am a proud, lifelong resident of Cleveland County, and I’m honored I’m to run for County Commissioner. I’m not a career politician — I’m a working man who understands responsibility, budgets, and the value of a hard-earned dollar.

I spent more than 35 years in manufacturing, retiring as an Environmental Coordinator with Celanese/Ticona and Fiber Industries. My career in Environmental Safety & Health taught me how to manage resources wisely, follow the rules, and protect people without wasting taxpayer money.

Public safety has been a lifelong commitment. I served 30 years as a certified EMT and firefighter with the Celanese Emergency Brigade and am a former member of the Upper Cleveland County Rescue Squad.

Where I Stand

I’ve been married to my wife for over 51 years. Believing in faith, family, and hard work is what guides my life. I’ve been active in my church for over 25 years, serving as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, and jail ministry leader. As a Christian, I will put God first and serve with integrity.

• Taxes & Spending: No tax increases unless absolutely necessary. Cut waste first. rst.

• Schools: Strong support for teachers and students.

• Growth & Jobs: Smart growth that protects rural land and property rights.

• Public Safety: Deputies, EMS, and firefighters must have the tools refighters they need.

• Infrastructure: Fix what we have, plan ahead, and expand rural broadband.

• Leadership: Honest, transparent government that puts people first. I’m running because I love this county and want to give back — not make a career out of politics

2 (8 ounce) packages whipped cream cheese

¾ cup sugar

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1-½

1

2 cups all-purpose flour

⅓ cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1 teaspoon salt

• Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line two 12-cup cupcake pan with 20 liners.

• Beat sugar and butter in a large bowl with an electric mixer until light and fluffy. Mix in eggs, buttermilk, red food coloring, and vanilla. Stir in baking soda and vinegar. Combine flour, cocoa powder, and salt; stir into the batter just until blended. Spoon batter into the prepared cups, dividing evenly.

• Bake in the preheated oven until the tops spring back when lightly pressed, 20 to 25 minutes. Cool in the pan set over a wire rack. When cool, arrange the cupcakes on a serving platter and frost with desired frosting.

CUPCAKES

2 tablespoons white sugar

Filling:

1 (21 ounce) can cherry pie filling

• Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line 24 muffin cups with foil liners.

• Make the crust: Mix graham cracker crumbs, melted butter, and sugar together in a bowl. Press crumbs into the bottoms of the prepared muffin cups.

• Make the filling: Beat cream cheese, sugar, eggs, and vanilla in a bowl until smooth. Divide filling between muffin cups.

CHOCOLATE COVERED STRAWBERRIES

12 large, or 24 medium, strawberries 10 ounces chocolate wafers, chips or chopped baking bars

1 tablespoon coconut oil, optional

dishtowel or paper towels.

• Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or wax paper and set aside.

• Place the chocolate and coconut oil in a small heat-proof mixing bowl heat in the microwave 30 seconds at a time, stirring between each interval, until the chocolate is almost completely melted. At that point, the residual heat will melt the rest while you give it a good stir.

• Hold each strawberry by the stem, dip into the melted chocolate, rotating it until it’s covered up to just below the stem area. Gently slide or tap the edge of the strawberry against the side of the mixing bowl to let the excess chocolate drip off, then place it on the prepared baking sheet to set.

• If you’re going to add any sprinkles or other toppings, be sure to decorate the strawberry just after dipping in the chocolate before the chocolate hardens.

• Store on the counter, loosely covered, until serving. Best served the same day they are prepared. If not serving immediately, loosely covered container between layers of wax paper or parchment paper in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Line the bottom of that container with a couple paper towels to help absorb any of the “sweating” that might occur.

CLEVELAND COUNTY’S

5 timeless Valentine's day gift ideas

(Family Features) On a day that signifies the importance of love and companionship, many people find it rewarding to show their loved ones just how much they mean. If you're in the gift-giving spirit this Valentine's Day, you may find a bit of inspiration with these ideas.

Just remember, whether you're celebrating the relationship with your significant other or showing appreciation for a friend, the best gifts come from the heart.

* Food - If your partner is a foodie, a Valentine's Day date is an obvious choice. Make a reservation at his or her favorite restaurant or opt for takeout and enjoy quiet time together in the comfort of home. Satisfy that special someone's sweet tooth with a classic box of chocolates or create a personalized candy basket full of guilty pleasures.

* Jewelry - Whether you've been together a year, a decade or more, it's a perfect opportunity to splurge

for a gift he or she will cherish for a lifetime. Necklaces, bracelets, earrings, anklets, watches and more all make for perfect gifts that can often be customized with engravings like names or important dates.

* Experiences - Oftentimes, the gift of moments together means more than a trinket. Consider the things you enjoy doing side by side and schedule a day or weekend to do nothing but your favorite activities. Book a tour at a local museum, find tickets to the next big game, sit frontstage for a favorite band or road trip to a nearby attraction for new sights and sounds.

* Subscriptions - Gifts don't always need to be sentimental. Sometimes, they can be downright practical. Creating an account for a new streaming service or music platform, signing up for monthly food or wine gift boxes and buying ticket packages for a favorite local team are all gifts that keep on giving.

* Handwritten Notes and Flowers - Take time to write what you appreciate most

about your special someone - personality traits, favorite memories, thoughtful gestures and why they're important to you - and pair your note with favorite flowers. Gifts may spark a smile, but sharing a moment of connection offers a reminder of what you're celebrating in the first place.

As one gets older our physiology changes. While anatomy is what something is made of, physiology is what it does and how it does it. It is how it runs. For instance, my truck may have the same parts as it did several years ago when I bought it, but it doesn’t run the same as it did when it was new. And as it gets older, those changes will be magnified. And what goes for trucks, goes for humans. While we may have the same parts, as we get older, we begin to run differently. Those changes come from a host of things including our environment, experiences, health issues, our DNA, and probably a few other things in addition to these. I have noticed I “run” differently than I once did. What once bothered me no longer does. And what once caused me to panic no longer does as well. But that’s not to say I have arrived at some special place. It’s to say that different things now cause my angst and panic. My physiology has changed. I have the same parts, but they run differently. One of the things I have noticed in my own life is how a crowded store makes me uneasy. I don’t know why, but it is noticeable. When things get too crowded, I just want to leave and come back at 3:00 am. I laugh as I think about my new phobia. What I’m not sure of yet, is if it is “selective crowd phobia” or not. I mean I can’t imagine feeling a sense of panic as I push my way into the Bass Pro Shops Spring Fishing Classic or during the National Wild Turkey Federation’s Convention and Sports Show. No, I’m pretty sure I could overcome any trepidation if a new turkey vest was involved. Now that I think about it, it probably is “selective crowd phobia.” I guess I’ll have to suck it up, dodge the crowd, overlook the impolite people to get my Japanese Cherry Blossom soap at Bath and Body, and my Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso at Starbucks. This truck just ain’t runnin’ right.

DANYALE PATTERSON

Reese Witherspoon once said, “When p eople get in your face and say, ‘This will p ass,’ you think, Are they crazy? I’m never gonna feel any better than I feel right this minute. And nothing’s ever gonna make sense again.” (ELLE, 2009) Doesn’t a broken heart feel exactly like that? When your heart is shattered, the pain is so intense that it feels permanent. You can’t imagine relief. You can’t imagine peace. You can’t imagine life making sense again. Broken hearts don’t follow timelines, and they don’t respond well to quick phrases or shallow encouragement. The pain feels consuming: physical, emotional, and spiritual all at once. In seasons of deep pain, even the faithful can cry out like Job did in Job 10:1 (CEV): “I am sick of life! And from my deep despair, I complain to you, my God.”

We experience broken hearts in many ways: through divorce, through the loss of a loved one, or through betrayal by a close friend. Each wound may look different, but the ache is just as real. And while the pain is awful, the good news is this: God does not ignore broken hearts. He moves toward them. P salm 147:3 (AMP) promises, “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds [healing their pain and comforting their sorrow].” This verse doesn’t say God rushes the healing. It doesn’t say the pain disappears overnight. It says he heals and he binds. That means he tends to the wound with care, compassion, and intention.

The Healing Process

So how do we get through the pain? We bring it to God honestly. We stop pretending we’re okay when we’re not. Psalm 55:22 (AMP) instructs us, “Cast your burden on the LORD [release it] and He will sustain and uphold you; He will never allow the righteous to be shaken (slip, fall, fail).” God never intended for us to navigate heartbreak by ourselves. He wants to meet us in the middle of our grief and cover

us with his love, peace, and strength. If your heart is hurting today, know this: your pain is seen, your tears matter, and your healing is possible. The same God who binds wounds will bind yours. Healing may take time, but God is faithful to complete the work He begins.

Pray This Prayer:

“Lord you are good, a present help in the time of trouble and you know those that trust in you. Lord, in good times and bad times, I turn to you. You promised to never leave or forsake me. Please help me when I feel like I don’t have any strength. I am casting all my burdens on you. Thank you for loving me and healing me. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”

CONNECTING TO GOD:

If you’ve never established a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, I encourage you to open

your heart to God’s love and grace today. Acknowledge your need for forgiveness and ask the Lord to cleanse you from all sin. Turn away from behaviors and attitudes that separate you from God. Surrender your life completely to Him and invite Jesus to become both your Savior and Lord. Seek out a Biblebelieving church where you can grow spiritually and serve others. Begin cultivating a meaningful relationship with God by setting aside daily time for Bible reading and prayer.

How to make your Valentine’s Day roses last longer

Valentine’s Day spending shows little sign of waning. Floral arrangements are among the most popular purchases on this special day. According to Rio Roses, customers spent $2.3 billion on flowers for Valentine’s Day in 2022. Valentine’s Day tends to be the busiest day for florists as plenty of people want to surprise sweethearts with bouquets and other floral arrangements. Red roses account for 70 percent of all Valentine’s Day flower purchases.

Early in 2023, Finance Buzz researched the average cost of a dozen roses in each state so shoppers could expect what they would pay to gift their loved ones, and the average price for a dozen roses in the United States was $80.16 at that time. Pennsylvania had the most affordable roses and Hawaii the most expensive. Roses can be costly, and recipients may want to do their bests to ensure the flowers last as long as possible.

• Unwrap the bouquet from any plastic as soon as possible to let the flowers breathe. Also, recut the stems with sharp scissors at a 45-degree angle.

• Remove any leaves from the stems that would end up sitting in the water when the roses are placed in a vase.

• Wash the vessel to rid it of dirt, dust and any grime to give the roses the best start possible.

• Use lukewarm water to fill the vase. Water that is too hot or too cold may shock the blooms

and shorten their life span. Fill the vase to three-quarters full.

• Use the flower food that comes with the roses. It is a good mix of nutrients to help prolong the life of the roses. A teaspoon of sugar dissolved in water also can be used in a pinch if the roses didn’t come with flower food.

• Change the water every few days, especially if it is cloudy.

This is a good time to re-snip the stems and add more flower food to the lukewarm water.

• Keep any cut flowers away from direct sunlight, drafts and radiators or heating vents. With proper care, cut roses may be able to last seven to 10 days , says Southern Living magazine.
