Jonathan Hawley of Shelby makes magic happen wherever he goes

For most folks the first thing they utter as a tot might be “googoo” or “dada”, but for Shelby magician Jonathan Hawley it’s not beyond the realm of possibility his first remark was “abracadabra”.

Ok, that statement might be a stretch, but the reality is, Hawley has been fascinated with prestidigitation from an early age and has turned that love into a successful career wowing audiences across the globe with his sleight of hand skills.

Hawley is a native of Langwith, England. He credits his father with planting the love of magic in his heart.

“When I was a child my dad and I used to do tricks when people would come over to the house,” he said.

Dancing was another youthful springboard towards a career in entertainment. At the tender age of eleven he won an international freestyle dancing competition in South

Hawley itched to see more of the world, especially America.

“I was the only guy in our village wearing

a USA bandanna,” he said.

As he approached early adulthood, Hawley took jobs that he knew deep down inside weren’t exactly his mission in life.

“I worked in factories and as a landscaper for our village,” he said. “I really wanted to be a dancer.”

Fate stepped in and a friend of his got a job on a cruise ship. He urged Hawley to send the cruise line a VHS of himself doing a dance routine. One thing led to another, and Hawley landed a job

a dancer with Costa Cruises.

“I went to Miami for the job,” Hawley said. “One of the first people I met was my future wife Trisha who was from Shelby and also a dancer with Costa.”

These days, the Hawleys have been married 21 years and have a four-year-old daughter Lena.

Anyway, during off-duty hours on the cruise ship, Jonathan would do magic tricks he learned as a kid for the other crew members. On another ship, he met an Italian magician who took Hawley under his wing.

“We would hang out together and he taught me a lot,” Hawley said.

One day Hawley got an email from the Italian inviting him to Italy.

“I spent six months learning his show,” Jonathan said. “I eventually did it for four years on six different ships.”

Over that period, Jonathan and Trisha started buying their own magic show equipment and things took off. They were quarterfinal-

ists on the America’s Got Talent in 2012. They were contacted by a representative from Princess Cruises who saw them on TV. Jonathan has also worked for Disney Cruises and Norwegian Cruises.

As you might expect, doing magic on cruise ships has taken Jonathan all over the world. Places he’s been includes Alaska, Antarctica, all over the Caribbean, the Mediterranean Sea area, Viet Nam, Turkey, See MAGIC Page 2

South America, Scandinavia, Italy, South Korea, and Japan to name a few.

Does he have a favorite place? Not really.

“I like each place for their own atmosphere,” he says. “I like to mingle with the locals.” Cruise ship work means lots of time away from home. Before Lena came along, Jonathan and Trisha would be gone for months with just a short time back in Shelby to recuperate. These days, Jonathan is gone less, and this has allowed him to cultivate corporate and private parties. For instance, he did a show in Oxford, NC a couple of weeks ago and has performed at the Don Gibson Theater in Shelby and Biltmore House in Asheville.

Jonathan rightfully gives Trisha a lot of credit for his success.

“Trisha and I were 50/50 partners in everything before she got pregnant with Lena,” he says. “Together we created all the magic including choreography, illusions, costumes, music, lighting, show designing, graphics, promotional material, everything. We’ve always done everything side by side since the beginning. Despite not being in the spotlight as much since becoming a mother, she’s still very much involved in all things Hawley Magic. travel together on land to every corporate gig and theater show and she also still performs with me when we do the big illusions.”

So, what is Jonathan’s favorite part of the job?

“I love seeing the look on people’s faces,” he says. “It’s not like ‘I fooled you’, but it’s the interaction with the crowd.”

The future?

“I want to keep doing magic as long as I am alive,” he says. “Even if I’m really old, I could look like a wizard.”

Arm wrestling is another Hawley passion. He hopes to become world champ.

Winter Storm Facts

During and after a winter storm, crews in affected areas work around the clock to monitor changing weather conditions and treat roads.

The N.C. Department of Transportation has more than 1,900 trucks that can be equipped with plows and spreaders to remove snow and ice. If needed, NCDOT moves trucks and equipment to areas more affected by a storm.

Depending on conditions, crews might pretreat roadways with a mixture of water and salt called brine to help prevent ice from bonding to the pavement. After plowing roadways, crews use salt and sand – or a mixture of both –on road surfaces. Salt helps melt ice and snow, and sand provides extra traction.

Brine

Brine, a solution of water and 23 percent salt, is used to pretreat roadways in dry conditions when the temperature is above 18 degrees. The decision to pre-treat roads is made 24 to 48 hours

before a storm. Brine must be applied when it is not raining.

Rain dilutes the solution and washes it off the road, making it ineffective.

Among several benefits, brine:

• Lowers the freezing temperature of water to about 18 degrees (-8 degrees Celsius).

• Prevents snow and ice from bonding with the road's surface.

• Keeps snow from being compacted by traffic, which can turn it into ice.

• Is more effective and coats roadways better than plain salt or sand.

• Gives crews time, since brining can occur up to 48 hours before a storm.

• Costs 15 cents per gallon to produce. One mile of a single lane of road can be treated

for about $6. Rock salt costs about $14.38 to treat the same stretch of road.

Brine is made by loading a hopper with salt and water and agitating the ingredients until the solution is 23 percent salt. The solution is pumped into a holding tank and loaded onto trucks to be sprayed on roads.

NCDOT crews will sometimes use a brine blend with 10 percent calcium to remove snow and ice during and after a winter weather event. This solution can be used in combination with rock salt when temperatures are lower to keep the salt working longer.

Salt & Sand Crews use salt and sand to help clear roads when a storm hits. After plows clear as much snow as possible, a mixture is spread on roads, with special attention given to freeway ramps.

Salt helps to melt the remaining snow and ice. Sand helps break up the ice and adds extra traction for vehicles.

Butt burning and winter safety

Much of America is enjoying a large dose of winter this week. There will be more to come.

This is butt burning weather, but let me explain. When I was around four or five years old I drank too much soda pop before I went to bed. It was a cold January night so I got all snuggled up in layers of quilts and blankets. Most likely, the temperature outside was about zero degrees. When I woke the next morning I found I was cold and wet. Yep, the soda pop did not wait on me to wake up and get to the bathroom. I was miserably wet and cold. The house was a bit chilly. We had a big wood and coal burning stove in the middle of the bedroom but the fire had gone out. My dad got the fire going and within minutes the nice warm heat from the coal and wood made the house comfortable once again. I jumped out of bed, shed

my wet pajamas and ran over and turned my naked butt toward the stove. “Ouch,” I screamed in pain as I had gotten too close to the stove and burned my butt.

I immediately started wailing and had to be cared for by my mother. I have no idea what she put on my bottom but for the next couple of days it was very sore. On these very chilly days be cautious of the fireplace, wood burning stove, etc. Don’t stand too close to them and especially don’t get naked and put your bare butt too close. I can attest that the pain is real. I loved snow days as a child. I would play in the snow and had family close by to visit. One snow day I sat with my cousin Johnny, his dad, Junior and another cousin. We sat in front of an old wood burning fireplace that really did a great job putting out heat. We played Rook for

what seemed like hours. Winter days like this are good for playing cards, monopoly or other games. My cousin Johnny also had a sled. We would come off a hill beside his house at the speed of light it seemed.

Playing in the snow can be fun but there are dangers. I grew up around adventurous friends who decided to ice skate on nearby pond. Buzz, Slim Daddy, Joey and others were enjoying the adventures of sliding across the ice when suddenly the ice gave way under Joey and into the water he went. I wasn’t there that day but my friends told me later that they made a chain across the ice and somehow, by the grace of God, managed to pull Joey out of the icy cold, frozen pond. They were able to save his life. I don’t think any of them ever stepped foot on frozen water again. Be wise and err on the side caution when it comes to outside activities.

Thus, enjoy winter and keep your butt safe.

My hunting season is over. I have scheduled a couple of fishing trips, but they are a few weeks away. Until then, I am surrounded by everything man-made. I don’t mind this too much after a season of God-made stuff, but I need to return to the God-made stuff quickly. But not for the hunting or fishing, but for the God of the stuff. You see, most of the time when I go to the woods I am going for the purpose of pursuit – whether that is for the purpose of scouting or hunting. When I’m in the woods I’m thinking about deer or turkey. When I’m on the water, it’s usually with a fishing rod. The point is that while I’m surrounded by the very handiwork of God when I am outside, I am focused on a more mundane activity. And sometimes (not all the time) my purpose doesn’t line up with my place. Let me explain.

What I need right now more than anything, is to be surrounded by creation for the purpose of being with and hearing from the Creator. My purpose needs to line up with my place. And yours does too. As you know because you hear it from me all the time, creation is the first way God spoke to his people, and it is still the first way He does it. Sure, the Bible is what we as Christians look to more than anything. But creation is how God speaks to believers and unbelievers all over the world. It is God confronting us head on with something so great that we must contemplate His desire to include us. And those of us who are Christians need to lean into hearing God through creation as well as through the scriptures. But to do that, we have to get in creation for this specific purpose. So, here’s what I’m going to do and maybe it’s something that you might want to do. Go to the woods or get in your boat and go to the lake, for the express purpose of hearing what God might want to say to you through His many masterpieces. When you get there simply ask God, “What do you want to say to me while I’m here?” And then, shut up, look at all the wonders around you, and listen. And then be able to answer this question should someone ask, and your life depended on it. “What was the one thing God wanted you to know from your time in the woods or on the water?” Be able to answer that question. If you and I do this, we will have perfectly used creation for the primary purpose it was meant. And I can’t help to believe the man-made world we are returning to, will be filled with a greater joy as well. Gary Miller gary@outdoortruths.org

Routine physical activity has a significant impact on physical and mental health. Though the temptation to be sedentary is ever-present and arguably greater than it’s ever been, getting up and moving can prolong life and make for happier, healthier days.

There’s no wrong way to be physically active, and many health professionals urge people to find a physical activity they enjoy so they’re more likely to maintain a commitment to exercise. Aerobic exercise is one option to consider because it encompasses a wide range of activities and pays a wealth of dividends.

Running, cycling, hiking, swimming, and even walking are popular forms of aerobic exercise, which benefits the body in myriad ways.

Aerobic exercise and disease prevention

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons notes that a fitness regimen that includes regular aerobic exercise can help people avoid potentially deadly diseases, including heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and some cancers. Johns Hopkins Medicine notes that aerobic exercise, which organizations such as the American Heart Association advise combining with strength-training exercises at least twice per week, is effective at preventing disease because it helps to control or modify various risk factors for conditions like heart disease.

Aerobic exercise and bone strength

Another notable benefit of routine aerobic exercise is it helps to build stronger bones.

Harvard Health notes that various studies have shown that weight-bearing exercises, in-

cluding aerobic activities like walking or running, put stress on bones which stimulates the formation of extra deposits of calcium and activates boneforming cells. This process ultimately results in denser, stronger bones, which is a particularly notable benefit for adults over 40, a point in time when bone strength typically begins to decline at a rate of roughly 1 percent each year.

Aerobic exercise and mental health

Harvard Health notes the benefits of aerobic exercise extend beyond the physical and into the mental. That link is neurochemical in nature, as aerobic exercise stimulates the production of endorphins, which Harvard Health notes are chemicals in the brain that naturally elevate mood, contributing to feelings of both relaxation and optimism. While that’s happening, aerobic exercise also helps to reduce levels of the body’s stress hormones.

Aerobic exercise is accessible and highly beneficial. Individuals of all ages are urged to commit to routine aerobic exercise so they can reap the physical and mental health rewards such a commitment produces.

God has always desired a relationship with his people, not distance. From the very beginning, scripture shows us a God who speaks, listens, responds, and walks closely with those who seek him. Cultivating a dialogue with God is not about perfect prayers or polished words. It is about a willing heart that is open, honest, and attentive. A true conversation with God is built on relationship, not routine. Jeremiah 33:3 (ESV) invites us into conversation when God says, “Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.” God promises both response and revelation.

DANYALE PATTERSON

important as speaking. I was always told that I have two ears and one mouth, so I need to do more listening than talking. Samuel learned this as a young boy when God called him. I Samuel 3:10 (NLT) says, “And the LORD came and called as before, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel replied, “Speak, your servant is listening.” When God speaks to us, it is so natural that we often miss it, but we were created to fellowship with God through the Holy Spirit. Many times he speaks through spontaneous thoughts, gentle nudges, conviction, peace, or confirmation through scripture. Abide In Him

attentively, and respond obediently, our relationship with God deepens. He is not distant or silent; he is near, attentive, and eager to commune with those who seek him. When we make room for conversation, we discover that hearing God is not complicated; it is relational.

Pray This Prayer:

“Thank you for speaking to my heart Holy Spirit. I ask that you forgive me for sometimes letting the prayer become a monologue instead of a dialogue. Help me to hear you clearly. I pray that I will be aware of your presence. I love you. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”

CONNECTING TO GOD:

Two Ears

Many believers are comfortable talking to God, but fewer are intentional about listening with expectation. Prayer was never meant to be a one-way exchange. Listening is just as

Conversation with God is not limited to prayer time. It is meant to be ongoing throughout the day. Walking with him, talking with him, and acknowledging him in everyday moments strengthens intimacy. When God becomes part of our daily conversations, our awareness of his presence grows. It transforms our faith from information to intimacy. It shifts prayer from obligation to connection. As we speak honestly, listen

If you’ve never established a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love

and grace today. Acknowledge your need for forgiveness and ask the Lord to cleanse you from all sin. Turn away from behaviors and attitudes that separate you from God. Surrender your life completely to Him and invite Jesus to become both your Savior and Lord. Seek out a Bible-believing church where you can grow spiritually and serve others. Begin cultivating a meaningful relationship with God by setting aside daily time for Bible reading and prayer.

Adults, parents, children, and adolescents can consider these strategies to get a better night’s sleep.

Tips to ensure a better night’s sleep

A state of sleep is necessary to give the body and mind time to recharge and prepare for the next day. Though such benefits are widely recognized, a significant percentage of individuals across the globe are failing to get sufficient rest, a dangerous reality that could be putting people at risk for various diseases and conditions.

• Replace an old mattress. Old mattresses can be uncomfortable and thus make it harder to fall asleep.

BASKETBALL WORD SEARCH

Lack of sleep is such a prominent problem that the research team behind a 2024 study published in the journal The Lancet: Diabetes & Endocrinology dubbed insufficient sleep as a “neglected public health issue.” That study surveyed 2,000 adults in the United Kingdom and found that 90 percent of respondents reported current sleep problems, with two-thirds of those individuals indicating they had experienced their issues for more than six years. And it’s not just adults suffering from sleep issues, as a 2023 peer-reviewed editorial written for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that the modern 24-hour lifestyle and pervasive utilization of electronics and social media is normalizing insufficient sleep among children and adolescents.

Sleeping problems are not to be taken lightly, as the National Institutes of Health notes sleep deficiency has been linked to heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, obesity, and depression. Children who are not getting enough sleep may experience difficulty paying attention, which could adversely affect their academic performance, and might be prone to misbehavior. Of course, many of these side effects can be avoided by getting sufficient sleep. With that in mind, adults, parents, children, and adolescents can consider these strategies to get a better night’s sleep, courtesy of the Sleep Foundation.

• Block out light. Light exposure adversely affects circadian rhythm, so keep external light out of your bedroom and dim lights as bedtime approaches. Avoiding bright light as you transition to bedtime can contribute to the production of the hormone melatonin, which facilitates sleep.

• Set an appropriate temperature. The Sleep Foundation advises setting a bedroom temperature thermostat to between 65 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit to prevent feelings of being too hot or too cold when going to bed.

• Wake up at the same time each day. A routine that includes the same wake-up time each day can acclimate the body to a healthy sleep routine.

• Begin to relax 30 minutes before bed. A prebedtime routine focused on relaxation can facilitate sleep. The Sleep Foundation notes activities like quiet reading, low-impact stretching, listening to soothing music, and mindfulness meditation can help you ease into sleep.

• Avoid devices an hour before bed. The light emitted by tablets, smartphones and laptops can suppress melatonin production, making it hard to fall asleep. Make the hour before bedtime each night a device-free time.

• Exercise each day, but avoid intense activity close to bedtime. Daily exercise has been found to promote sleep, but intense exercise right before bed can make it hard for the body to settle down.

Insufficient sleep is an emerging issue for people of all ages across the globe. Some simple strategies can be employed to facilitate a better night’s rest.

Opportunity to support North Carolina’s endangered and nongame wildlife

State taxpayers receiving a refund can simply check a box to fund more conservation efforts

The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) invites those filing a 2025 North Carolina state tax return to donate all or a portion of their refund to the N.C. Nongame and Endangered Wildlife Fund. Contributions will support research and conservation management projects for the state’s most vulnerable wildlife populations.

“Funds donated using the tax-checkoff program amplify those provided by a federal grant for species of greatest conservation need (SGCN), including listed species in North Carolina,” said Dr. Sara Schweitzer, assistant chief of NCWRC’s Wildlife Management Division. “A $100 donation is matched by $186 of grant funding—truly boosting wildlife conservation in North Carolina. Our dedicated and passionate biologists, agency partners and vol-

unteers work tirelessly to ensure wildlife and their habitats will persist into the future for North Carolinians to enjoy. In western North Carolina especially, donations will help us address the immense impacts of Hurricane Helene on species such as the Eastern hellbender, bog turtle, gray bat, Carolina Northern flying squirrel and several high-elevation migratory birds.” These funds support survey and monitoring efforts for rare species such as the bog turtle, Hickory Nut Gorge green salaman-

der, Eastern hellbender, river frog, diamondback terrapin and Northern gray treefrog. These data are used to target habitat restoration projects, especially needed in areas impacted by Hurricane Helene in the west and areas impacted by drought in the Sandhills. More information on these and other projects supported by the tax check-off program is found in quarterly reports from NCWRC’s Wildlife Diversity Program. Taxpayers can easily participate by checking Line 30 on their North

Carolina state income tax form; or, if filing through an online tax preparation software, enter the contribution amount when prompted to “N.C. Nongame and Endangered Wildlife Fund.”

For those wishing to donate and do not expect a state tax refund, direct donations may be made online to support nongame wildlife through the N.C. Wildlife Diversity Endowment Fund by visiting https://www.ncwildlife.gov/ donate.

Shelby Shopper & Info’s publisher and its advertisers are not responsible or liable for misprints, typographical errors, misinformation herein contained. We reserve the right to edit, reject or accept any articles, advertisements, or information to be printed in this publication. We will provide ad proofs for pre-paid ads or ads that are placed by established clients. No proofs may leave our premises without payment and permission and are copyright by Shelby Shopper & Info. CANCELLATION OR CORRECTION DEADLINE: is the same as the order deadline because much of our cost is involved in the production of the ad itself. If you have to cancel an ad after deadline, it may be necessary to charge for the time and materials we’ve spent on preparing the ad. Display & Classified Deadline is Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. News articles and obituary deadline is Friday at 3:00 p.m.

ERRORS: We want your ad to be accurate and correct, and normally there will be no errors. However, should there be an error and it is our fault, we will give you a correction letter and return (and/or give credit) for the actual space occupied by the incorrect information. You should notify us of the error immediately and before the ad runs a second time.

COPIES: ONE Free copy of Shelby Shopper & Info is available per household. Additional copies are available at our office for a $1.00 charge. No individual or business is permitted to place or attach any flyer, poster or any type of advertisement of any kind to our boxes or on our racks.
