Program at the Patrick Center in KM helps seniors write their life stories By Alan Hodge “Everyone has a story to tell, but they don’t know they have it.” That’s what Regina Baynard tells folks who take part in the “Your Story, Your Way” journaling program held the first and third Wednesday of each month from 11:30am-12:30pm at the H. Lawrence Patrick Senior Life and Conference Center, 909 E. Kings St., in Kings Mtn. The program lets participants share stories from their life and learn how to chronicle them not only for their own pleasure but for anyone they care to share them within this or future generations. Baynard, who was born on a farm in Ohio in 1948, has been volunteering to lead the class for about two years. She comes by her love of writing naturally. “My mother was very creative,” Baynard says. “She was a poet, an artist, and very musical. I inherited my love of poetry from her.” Baynard put her writing skills to work at an early age.

(Photo by Alan Hodge) “When I was in eighth grade we had a poetry contest,” she said. “Some of the other kids asked me to write poems for them. The teacher said it was curious how so many of the entries were similar.” More recently, Baynard has been working on her own life journey story. She has taken photos of her family and herself going back many, many, decades and is penning an epic poem describing the scenes. So far, the work has filled two large albums.
Baynard is sharing her talent with “Your Story, Your Way” participants. “We start by writing a sentence or a word and just let it flow from there in free association,” she said. “That can trigger memories. Some people will want to publish their story, some want to share with their family, some simply enjoy writing.” Last week, two ladies showed up for the program, Gayle Tapy from Gastonia and Marlene Newman from Kings Mtn. Tapy is basing her journal

(Photo by Alan Hodge) work on a book her father, a US Navy WWII veteran, had started writing, but never finished, about his wartime adventures. “He told one story about the ship he was on taking government gold from Poland to America,” she said. “I started thinking about what other things he must have done and use my imagination to write them down. This helps me try to understand what he did.” Newman grew up in Kings Mtn. Last week was her first time taking part in the program. “I like to write and just want to see where the spirit directs me,” she said. “I especially want to write about the things I have seen in Kings Mtn.”
Newman also has another rich source for journal material. “I was a missionary in Africa for forty years,” she says. Baynard says the “Your Story, Your Way” program is open to any Patrick Senior Center-eligible person who cares to take part. “I hope to grow it,” she says. “I want people to write down their beliefs. The silent disco is a brand new component of the Big Chill this year, thanks to the sponsorship of the Shelby Hearing Center. “A silent disco is a party where guests wear wireless headphones to listen to music allowing them to switch between multiple channels,” said Kay Young, Cleveland County Arts Council Secretary. “Participants get headphones, tune into different music streams via radio frequency, and dance to their own beat, creating a unique vi-

sliced 2 ½ cups shredded sharp Cheddar cheese Salt and ground black pepper to taste • Melt 1 tablespoon butter in a skillet over medium-high heat. Saute onion in hot butter until translucent, about 5 minutes. Set aside. • Whisk 1/4 cup melted butter and flour together in a large saucepan over medium-low heat; cook until flour loses it’s granular texture, adding 1 to 2 tablespoons of milk if necessary to keep the flour from burning,

If we can help them with their oil and benefit both countries then that would be a win-win. In the meantime, let’s do the good things we know to do. Our communities and towns need us to carry on, even when it seems like the world is trying to fall apart.

Play Ball! Applications Now Open for 2026 American Legion World Series Bat Kids Ready to grab a front-row seat to the action and step right onto the field? The American Legion World Series (ALWS) Executive Committee is calling all young baseball and softball players to apply for the 2026 Bat Kids program! If you’re 10–12 years old as of August 1, 2026, play in an organized baseball or softball league (Little League, Dixie Youth, or a city or county recreation program), and dream of being part of the game, this is your moment. Applications are open now and must be submitted by April 15, 2026. Bat kids will be chosen during a live drawing on Veterans Field at Keeter Stadium during the Wake Forest vs. Appalachian State game on April 28, 2026. A total of 16 bat kids and 2–4 alternates will be selected. The ALWS Executive Committee may also appoint bat kids prior to the drawing. Once selected, bat kids may return in future years if they continue to meet age and eligibility requirements. The excitement continues August 13–18, 2026, when the American Legion World Series returns to Keeter Stadium on the Shelby High School campus. Bat kids are right in the middle of the action, helping players and coaches by retrieving bats, collecting protective gear, and even joining in pregame warmups when directed by the team.
Being a bat kid is a big honor—and a big responsibility. The fun begins the Sunday before the first pitch and runs through the final out of the tournament. Two bat kids are assigned to each team and stay with that team for the duration of its run in the series, with every team guaranteed at least three games. Families traveling from out of town must provide proof of hotel accommodations to ensure availability throughout the week. There is no application process for Shaggers. Shaggers are typically 13 years or older as of August 1, 2026, have previously served as bat kids, and have shown outstanding leadership, safety awareness, and baseball knowledge. Shaggers are selected by committee and contacted separately. The Bat Kids and Shaggers programs are coordinated by Jean and Chris Horne, who see the magic unfold each year. “The players often become like big brothers to the bat kids, and many of those friendships last well beyond the World Series,” said Jean Horne. “It’s incredible to watch these kids grow and dream right alongside the players.” Applications are available at www.alws.us and on the American Legion World Series Facebook page. In a small bowl, mix pepperoni, pasta sauce and mozzarella cheese. • On a lightly floured surface, divide dough into 4 portions. Roll each into a 6-in. circle; top each with a scant 1/3 cup pepperoni mixture. Fold dough
over filling; pinch edges to seal. Place on a greased baking sheet. • Brush milk over tops; sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and, if desired, Italian seasoning. Bake until golden brown, 20-25 minutes. HONEY VANILLA CINNAMON BANANA BREAD 3 ripe bananas 1/2 cup melted butter 1/2 cup honey 1/2 cup Greek yogurt 2 eggs 2 tsp vanilla extract 1-1/2 cups all purpose flour 1 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp baking soda 1 tsp cinnamon • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. • Mash bananas until smooth. Add in melted butter and honey and mix until combined. Add in eggs, vanilla extract and Greek yogurt and mix again. • Add in dry ingredients. Fold until all dry bits are incorporated. • Add to a lined loaf tin and bake on 350 degrees for 55-60 minutes.

SLOW-COOKER CHICKEN STEW 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 pound boneless skinless chicken thighs, cubed 1-1/2 tsp. salt, divided 1/2 tsp pepper, divided 4 med. carrots, thinly sliced 1 small onion, chopped 1 celery rib, chopped 1 garlic clove, minced 4 medium Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and cut into 1-inch
cubes 1 tsp dried parsley flakes 1/2 tsp dried rosemary, crushed 1/2 tsp dried thyme 3 cups reduced-sodium chicken broth • 1/2 cup whole milk • 1/4 cup cornstarch • 1 cup frozen peas • In a large skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Add chicken thighs; sprinkle with 1/2 tsp. salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Cook until browned, 2-3 minutes per side. • Transfer to a 4 or 5-quart slow cooker. To the same skillet, add carrots, onion, celery and garlic; cook
until tender, 3-4 minutes; add to the slow cooker. • Add potatoes, parsley, rosemary, thyme and remaining 1 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper to slow cooker. Pour broth over top; gently stir. • Cook, covered, on low until chicken is cooked through and vegetables are tender, 4-5 hours or on high for 2-3 hours. • In a small bowl, whisk milk and cornstarch until smooth; stir into stew. Add in peas. Cook, covered, until sauce is thickened, about 30 minutes.

North Carolina will see local Girl Scouts participating in WalkAbout Week for the 2026 Girl Scout Cookie Program as they sell the famous cookies door-todoor. The event started on Saturday, January 10 amd will continue through Sunday, January 18 in neighborhoods in 40 counties across Western and central NC. During Walk-About Week, girls are encouraged to take a parent or a trusted adult on a walk around the neighborhood to practice their cookie marketing skills, share quality time with their adult companion and spread the joy of the annual Girl Scout Cookie season. Joining this year’s lineup are the Exploremores, a rocky road ice cream–inspired sandwich cookie. Special programs at The Schiele Museum in 2026 Visitors Can Enjoy Free and Low-Cost Fun and Learning Thanks to Community Partners
The Schiele Museum of Natural History is proud to offer a variety of special programs to the public this year, thanks to the generosity of local business partners. Monthly Free Tuesdays, a Community STEM Night, the Explorer’s Outpost, and Kid’s Quest Afterschool Adventures in the Curiosity Lab are all open and available in 2026. Since 2012, Duke Energy has sponsored monthly Free Tuesdays at The Schiele Museum. Admission is free for all visitors from 4:00 – 8:00 PM on the second Tuesday of each month in 2026. In addition, Duke Energy has also generously funded a free Community STEM Night on Thursday, January 15, from 5:00 – 8:00 PM. Visitors can enjoy museum exhibits after hours, a planetarium show, and an interactive educational program – all provided at no cost. Thanks to the support of Enbridge Gas NC, The Schiele’s newest experi-
ence is now open to the public! Nature lovers of all ages are invited to examine plants, animals, and their habitats through hands-on activities and guided exploration in the Explorer’s Outpost. The Outpost is included with the purchase of museum admission. Kid’s Quest Afterschool Adventures participants are starting their spring session this week in the Curiosity Lab, sponsored again in 2026 by Bank of America. Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ By Gary Miller I’ve really enjoyed the unseasonably warm January weather. I wouldn’t mind if the whole winter felt like this. It has allowed me to do a bunch of stuff outside in comfort. One of things I’m getting ready to do is head back into the deer woods. I want to spend a few hours perusing the land to learn what I can about last the previous season. I want to see where the bucks spent most of their GARY MILLER time, where the most scrapes were, and of course how I can apply that to the next deer season. As I have mentioned many times before, one can learn so much when the leaves are off the trees and the season is over. There is no pressure. There’s no time limit. There’s no one thing that takes priority. There are just opportunities to learn and grow. And there’s no better time to do a full investigation than when the woods are stripped down to their bare frame. Everything is exposed. Everything is open. And while everything seems dead, the ground is just preparing for another season of life. This sounds too much like you and me – and life. As I write this, I think about many of you who would describe your present season as one of a bare frame. No leaves of life. No fruit of flourishing. Because of some circumstance or situation, you feel exposed to the world. You feel open for all to see the crooked limbs that stress shaped and trauma twisted. So, what do we do when this unwanted season of exposure comes our way? We find the signs of God. They will be there just as they have always been. But now we will be able to see them more clearly. And when we do that, we can return to our spring sooner. God does not always remove the leaves to correct us, but to help us see where He wants us to be more quickly, so that we can get back to the thriving life He has for all of us. General Statute 143-215-1C requires that the owner or operator of any wastewater collection or treatment works to issue a press release when an untreated wastewater discharge of 1,000 gallons or more reaches surface waters. In accordance with that regulation, the following new release has been prepared and issued to the media in the affect county: Cleveland. The town of Boiling Springs had a discharge of untreated waste water on January 11, 2026, estimated at 2,000 gallons from a sewer manhole inside the campus area of Gardner Webb University. The campus is locate at 110 South Main Street Boilings Springs, NC 28017. The wastewater discharge occurred due to a blockage in the main line from rags and grease accumulation, the untreated wastewater was discharged into Lake Hollifield in the Broad River Basin. The Town of Boilings Springs is taking remedial measures to evaluate this area of wastewater lines and implement improv3em3ents to prevent this from occurring in the future. The Division of Water Resources was notified of the event on January 11, 2026 at 4:43 pm and is reviewing the matter for more information contact the Town of Boiling Springs Town Hall at (704) 434-2357.
