The Rutherford County Department of Social Services along with the Rutherford County Senior Center is hosting an Elder Abuse Awareness Day Initiative to coincide with World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD). What is elder abuse? Elder abuse can be financial, emotional, physical, or sexual. It also includes people who are neglected and those who neglect themselves (self-neglect). Social isolation, financial or emotional stress, and dementia can make a senior vulnerable to abuse. WEAAD was launched in 2006 to provide an opportunity for communities around the world to promote a better understanding of abuse, neglect, and exploitation of older persons. Did you know – • Current 2026 data shows that 1 in 6 older adults (15.7%) globally experience some form of abuse annually. • It is estimated that only 1 in 24 cases of elder abuse are actually reported to authorities. • In 2026 - Older Americans lose an estimated $2.6 billion to $28.3 billion annually to financial abuse • Family members are most likely to commit Elder Abuse, accounting for 60% of cases. • The average loss to a victim of Elder Fraud in 2024 was $83,000, up 43% from 2023. • Abuse can happen at home, a relative’s home or in an eldercare facility. About 1 in 10 Americans age 60+ have experienced abuse.

• In 2026 reports, 44% of nursing home residents reported being abused, while 95% reported witnessing or suffering neglect. • Anyone can report elder abuse; you do not need proof of maltreatment to make a report. • If you know of an adult in immediate danger, dial 911. • To make a report of elder abuse, neglect, self-neglect, or exploitation call Rutherford County DSS at 828-287-6165. • The Adult Services Unit of RC DSS works 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to ensure the safety of Rutherford County seniors and disabled adults. • It is up to everyone to prevent and address Elder Abuse. theatre director and an actor. He also taught at a college. The move to Rutherford County, marked the end of fulltime professional work, and the beginning of the couple’s “third act.” They have made new friends, and found projects and activities that are meaningful to them. Dolman is passionate about building community, especially through his work with the Lake Lure Community Education Foundation which primarily supports Lake Lure Classical Academy, (which is the public charter school located in the town), as well as other community entities. Saturday’s concert will feature the bluegrass band, The Po’ Ramblin’ Boys, with Carley Arrowood and Daniel Thrailkill opening the show. Dolman said he wants the event to help bring the community together, for “joyful music on the lake.” “It’s a great time to visit the area for a few days, and take in all there is to offer here, whether it’s music, hiking, great restaurants or the lake,” Dolman added.
