He has 19 years in the field and pastoring. Their new name comes from 1 Corinthians 13:13 - And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. The Rescue Mission has a 15-bed transitional housing program for women which charges sub-market rates for dorm-style rooms. Residents are working. A similar 19-bed men’s program will open in two months. The Mission also operates a facility for 20 women and 20 children. This program is free of charge. The Mission’s funding breaks down to 51 percent individuals and 49 percent churches, institu-

KMPD investigates shooting at Kings Food Store At approximately 3:22 p.m. on Monday, October 19, the Kings Mountain Police Department (KMPD) responded to Kings Food Store, located at 320 Waco Road, after receiving reports of several gunshots heard near the store. Upon officers’ arrival, multiple shell casings were located in the parking area and along Walker Street. Officers secured the scene, and the KMPD Criminal Investigations Unit responded to process the area and begin its investigation.

Initial reports indicate the suspect, described as a light-skinned Black male, was a passenger in a dark-colored sedan that left the scene traveling East on Waco Road. While officers were responding to the scene, KMPD Communications received information from Atrium Health Kings Mountain regarding a gunshot victim who had been dropped off at the emergency department. The victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries in connection with the

incident. The victim’s name is not being released at this time. KMPD continues to investigate the incident and is canvassing the surrounding area for residential and business surveillance video, as well as potential witnesses. Anyone who may have information concerning this incident is asked to contact the Kings Mountain Police Department at 704-7340444 or submit a tip through Cleveland County Crime Stoppers.

Silence may or may not be golden Silence may or may not be golden. You may be hungry for a little bit of silence or terrified of Glenn Mollette Guest Editorial the quiet. Silence can be deafening, but it all depends on the circumstances. Often the noise of the world and all that is going on can be overwhelming. We may all have moments when we are on information over-

load. We can’t take any more and we have to turn off the television, the social media, text messages and so on. Almost daily I block three or four phone numbers who are sending me more and more unrequested information. Our lives can be noisy and cluttered. We may have vocational overload plus home noise that we deal with daily. You may have a house filled with children and lots of other relatives you hear from daily. You may be involved at church or have other social connections that fill up your life. Your quiet moments may

be rare. You long for a quiet peaceful day that seems to be far removed from you. Most likely, the day will come. Children grow up and they have their own busy lives. The people at church move on. The others you used to talk to are gone or doing something else. The quietness may be more than you really want. I have been in too many nursing homes where people sat staring quietly into space buried deep in thoughts of past happier times. The reality is that we all need some quiet time to sort out our thoughts. Our brains

need a rest. We need time to talk to God and to talk to ourselves. We need time to just sort through our thoughts and to reflect and make good decisions. So, there is a plus side to silence, but we don’t need it 24/7. While you may be having a quiet moment here is something serious for you to think about. Do not overstock on Halloween candy. By all means, do not load up on candy that you like because you will end up eating most of the candy. Buy only what you can give away. Halloween is the official beginning

of the big weight gain season. For the next ten weeks people decide they are going to eat like crazy and then diet on January first. It’s your call. However, while you are quiet determine to not buy so much candy for Halloween. Also, in your quiet time think about who you are going to vote for on election day. Take a look at the candidates. Look at who they are and how they have lived and what they have done. Look at what the candidates stand for and what they believe. The political noise is deafening. We are bombarded daily by

Changing Season. Same Calling: Endure Over the last couple of weeks, we reflected on how to be faithful in our calling in life even as life changes. Scripture has Pastor challenged us Stephen Littlejohn to remember Battleground its unchang- Community Church ing, steadfast truth and that we are still called to proclaim it. We were also challenged

to reflect on God’s power and strength instead of our diminishing power and strength. We are called to trust in Him to carry us through this life until we reach our forever home. But that brings us to the hard part of our Christian calling: endurance. When parts of us stop working or at least seem to respond too slowly, it is easy to sit back in our recliners and functionally quit. Scripture calls us to a better mindset and pursuit. Listen to Paul in 2 Corinthians 4:16: “So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting

away, our inner self is being renewed day by day.” We might think, “Easy for him to say,” but let’s remember the one who is talking has suffered far more for his faith than we have. He is reminding us not to lose heart. How can we not quit when everything hurts? Did you know a part of you isn’t aging? In fact, it should be, if we are living out our calling, getting stronger and stronger. Paul is reminding us that even though our bodies begin to fail, that part of us, the inner us, where the Spirit of the Lord is, is being renewed day

by day. It really is true that what you feed in your life will grow. How do we endure? By feeding ourselves timeless truth about our unchanging God and resolving to live for Him and finish in Him. This faith-fueled resolve will bring incredible hope and an eternal perspective. Paul goes on to say, contrast your suffering with the glory God has promised for you, and you will begin to think more of the eternal future than what life takes away, for in Christ our future is always bright. So remember, endure in the strength that hope provides.

Pack 92 learns about autism Autism has become part of the mainstream over the last two decades but we still know very little about it. Ever since 2012, one out of one hundred children have been diagnosed with the neurodevelopmental disorder. To help expand autism awareness, Cub Scout pack 92, located in Kings Mountain, hosted specialist Ms. Siera Bergeron to help pass her knowledge to scouts and parents. Ms. Bergeron is a licensed Behavior Analyst for the state of North Carolina along with being the lead Board Certified Behavior Analyst at Compleat Kidz ABA Pediatric Therapy in Gastonia. Ms. Bergeron found her passion for autism while she was a student at Clemson University earning a Bachelors in Psychology. She spent her free time volunteering for ClemsonLIFE, a program for students with intellectual disabilities. She loves to share the story of a student who she helped teach basic life skills, such as driving a car and earning her license. When she realized that something so simple could make a huge difference in people's lives she knew she had found her life's purpose. When she met with Cub Scout Pack 92 at Central Methodist Church, she used a marshmallow and tooth pick activity to show that it is always possible to reach the top, some people may just need a different path or a little extra assistance to get there. She then had the scouts build their own version using marsh-

mallows and tooth picks to show that they could all achieve the same goal in their own unique way. After this activity she told everyone about a charity that is near and dear to her heart, Lyric's Loft. Ms. Bergeron created Lyric's Loft in 2022 to help offset the cost of clothing, diapers, wipes, and food for the parents of au- Lily Brewer, who is earning her Arrow of tistic children. KM falls to South Point 34-13, looks to rebound Friday at Huss Kings Mountain saw its six-game winning streak broken by a good South Point eleven 34-13 Friday night at John Gamble Stadium. The Mountaineers will hit the road for their final two Big South Conference games Friday at Hunter Huss and October 30 at Crest. Kings Mountain drove the opening kickoff 73 yards to take a 7-0 lead on a twoyard keeper by quarterback Jordan Jenkins. Jenkins kept the ball three times to get 61

of those yards. The Red Raiders answered on the second play of the second quarter on a two-yard run by Kavion Pless to make it 7-all at the 11:25 mark and that tie score held up until halftime. South Point drove the second half kickoff 73 yards to score on a three-yard run by Kayden Rump and the rout was on. The Raiders scored again at the 4:04 mark of the third period to go up 21-7. KM was driving for a possible TD before losing the ball on

downs at the Raider 22 at the 9:37 mark of the fourth period. Six plays later the Raiders scored on a sixyard run by Rumph to go up 28-7. The Red Raiders recovered a KM fumble and scored again on a 12-yard run by Rumph to go up 34-7. After a holding penalty on the ensuing kickoff the Mountaineers got two big runs from Coleman to the 32 and Jenkins hit Devin Hopper for a 68-yard catch and run TD to account for the final tally.

Medicare and Moving: What You Need to Know Dear Savvy Senior, I’m planning to move later this year to be closer to my youngest son and his family. I’ve lived in the same state for decades, so I’m a little nervous about how this might affect my Medicare coverage. Will I need to change plans or take any special steps to avoid gaps? --Relocating Rita Dear Rita, Great question. A move like this is exciting, but it’s smart to think ahead about how it could affect your coverage. Whether your Medicare is impacted – and what you’ll need to do – depends on the type of plan you have. Here’s what to expect and steps to take before and after your move. Original Medicare

If you’re enrolled in original Medicare (Part A and Part B), you’re in the simplest situation. Your coverage will go with you anywhere in the United States, so you won’t need to change your plan when you move. That said, you do need to update your address so you don’t miss important notices like your Medicare Summary Notice or billing statements. The easiest way to do that is online through your “my Social Security” account at ssa.gov/myaccount using the “My Profile” tab. If you don’t already have an account, you can set one up in just a few minutes. Or, you can call Social Security at 800-772-1213 and have them update it for you.

coverage. Part D drug coverage If you have original Medicare along with a stand-alone Part D drug plan, your move may require a change. Drug plans are based on where you live, so you’ll need to contact your current plan to see if it operates in your new state. If it doesn’t, you’ll need to choose a new plan that does. You’re given a special enrollment window to make this switch – starting the month before your move and lasting up to two full months afterward. If you miss that window, you may have to wait until the next open enrollment period (Oct. 15 to Dec. 7), and you could face a late enrollment penalty if you go without qualifying drug

Advantage plans Medicare Advantage plans are also location-based, so a move almost always means you’ll need to take action. Check with your plan to see if it serves your new area. If it doesn’t, you’ll need to enroll in a new Advantage plan or switch to original Medicare. Like Part D, you’ll have a special enrollment period that begins the month before you move and continues for two months after. Select, a type of Medigap plan that uses provider networks. If you have one of these (they’re not very common), you may need to switch plans when you relocate.
