The “Wall of Commanders” has been a favorite of patrons for years and a special photo opportunity for descendants of those who fought in the battle.
Charles Toppan — Jefferson's Rough Draft New for 2026, the 1829 Charles Toppan steel engravings of Thomas Jefferson's original rough draft of the Declaration of Independence will be exhibited at the Joy. Brought by Founding Sponsors Gilbert and Jancy Patrick, the engravings preserve Jefferson's handwritten draft, including interlineations by Benjamin Franklin and John Adams. Theodore W. Ohman — Declaration of Independence Also on display is a 1942 Theodore W. Ohman lithographic restoration of the Declaration of Independence, donated by John B. and Sonja Houston. Ohman recreated the Declaration using an early photograph of the original parchment and the 1823 Stone engraving. Examples of his work are held by the National Archives, Library of Congress and Independence Hall. Together, these exhibits help tell the story of American freedom — from Jefferson's words declaring independence to the Carolina patriots who fought to preserve it at Kings Mountain. Written by Robert “Bob” Inman, Liberty Mountain brings to life the dramatic events leading to the October 7, 1780 Battle of Kings Mountain, a pivotal victory in the Southern Campaign of the American Revolution. The production features full theatrical action, music, epic battles, and special See LIBERTY, Page 2A
Twenty-five years after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, Kings Mountain residents gathered Friday morning at Patriots Park to remember those who lost their lives and to honor the first responders who continue to serve their communities each day. The City of Kings Mountain held its annual 9/11 Memorial Service at 8:30 a.m., bringing together city officials, police officers, firefighters, EMS personnel, chaplains and community members for a morning of remembrance, music and reflection. Mayor Rob Wagman welcomed those gathered and drew a connection between the first responders who rushed toward danger on September 11 and those who serve Kings Mountain today. “What’s the difference between them and our EMS who serve today, and our police that serve today, and our fire that serves today? Nothing,” he said. “They’ve all put their lives on the line to keep us safe.” He thanked the city’s EMS, police, fire personnel, and all first responders for their service. City employee and Chaplain James Wasman offered the invocation, remembering the victims and their families while also recognizing 911 telecommunicators, firefighters, EMS personnel and law enforcement officers. “Let us remember the

Kings Mountain Police Chief Gerald Childress led the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the National Anthem performed by King’s Revue. The morning’s program also included recorded personal recollections from people who remembered exactly where they were when America came under attack.

9/11 From Page 1A watching television coverage of the World Trade Center. “I do remember telling myself that the world in which we had known it had changed forever,” he recalled. Kings Mountain Fire Department Lt. Ross Clark was only a second grader on September 11, 2001. At that young age, he did not fully understand what was happening, but he remembered the classroom telephone ringing, his teacher becoming visibly shaken, and parents beginning to call the school. “We really didn’t understand the gravity of what was happening,” he said. “We just knew something was happening that was a big deal.” That experience would later influence his decision to become a first responder. KMPD Assistant Chief Lance Hamrick recalled watching the second plane strike the World Trade Center before going to the police department, where he watched both towers collapse. The experience eventually led him toward military service. On September 23, 2001 — less than two weeks after the attacks — he joined the North Carolina National Guard and later deployed to Iraq. Chaplin Teresa Wingo recalled watching the news coverage of the attack in real time, recalling the horror of watching paper flying from the windows, only to realize, "I saw people jumping. It was horrible. They looked like they were up so high, but when they were jumping, it just looked like paper coming out of windows, but it was moving. It was people. I felt complete anguish and doom. It was just a sick feeling. It was like I've never had emotion like that. You couldn't really put a word to that emotion that you felt. Complete grief." Assistant Chief Lance Hamric shared, "I watched

the second plane hit on TV while I was at my apartment. Then came up to the police department, and I remember watching both towers collapse. I do remember thinking that this was one of those days that was just going to be etched in my memory from now on. Just knew that that day that things were going to be different, and that you were going to remember that day." KMPD PSAP Manager Lynn Slycord shared that day hit home with her. "I never saw myself doing this. When I got the calling, I got the calling. After that day, I knew it was something I had to do. I understand why people go into the worst situation ever, and they do it willingly, with purpose. But then, as those buildings collapsed. I mean, coming from a family of fire chief, and always being around firemen, just heartache for those people and those agencies. Thank you to all the first responders who responded that day, from the 911 operators to police, fire, and EMS. They're heroes, real heroes." Chaplain Wasman brought both military and family perspectives to the service. Whitaker spent 25 years in the U.S. Air Force, much of that time serving as a flight engineer aboard C-130 aircraft. His son Ian now serves as a Kings Mountain firefighter. Whitaker reminded those gathered that heroism is often found not in dramatic moments but in people quietly preparing day after day to protect others when the unexpected happens. “Most heroism in this world doesn’t look like a movie,” Whitaker said. “It looks like somebody running a boring checklist nobody ever wanted to run year after year. So, when the bad day finally comes, everybody else gets to walk out alive.” The program also recognized chaplains who serve alongside Kings Mountain’s emergency personnel. Mayor Wagman asked chaplains
serving with the city, fire department, police department, and EMS to be recognized for the role they play during some of the community’s most difficult moments. City of Kings Mountain Special Events Coordinator Angela Padgett offered another remembrance, recognizing pregnant women who died in the September 11 attacks and the unborn children they were carrying. Retired KMFD Captain Jamie Black conducted the traditional ringing of the fire bell, one of the morning’s most solemn reminders of the firefighters and other emergency personnel who lost their lives that day. The service concluded with Chaplain Gabriel Thomas calling current and retired first responders and chaplains to the stage. Thomas brought his 11-year-old son, Jaron, forward. Thomas explained that his son is now the same age he was when the attacks occurred 25 years ago. For Thomas, the anniversary was not only an opportunity to look back but also to consider what the next generation can learn from September 11. “Twenty-five years ago, on one of the worst days this country has ever faced, we were able to also see something else,” Thomas said. “When this country unites together, puts aside all of our differences, we come together.” Standing beside his son and surrounded by the men and women who serve Kings Mountain today, Thomas offered the closing prayer, asking for protection for first responders, chaplains, telecommunicators and members of the military — and for the next generation to carry forward the lessons of September 11. It was a fitting conclusion to a morning built around a message that has endured for a quarter-century: remember those who were lost, honor those who ran toward danger, and never forget.

Mountaineers roll over Catholic 48-7, Forestview here Friday for first BSC game Kings Mountain’s Mountaineers rolled to a 48-7 victory over Charlotte Catholic in their final non-conference game Friday night at Gamble Stadium and will open Big South Conference play against the Forestview Jaguars Friday at Gamble. The Mountaineers jumped to an early 14-7 lead and were on top 21-7 at the half. They rolled in the second half to leave no doubt who was the better team. “We played very well up front,” said head coach Strait Hannon. “Khareem Coleman got us 160 yards rushing and that’s pretty good. We controlled the line all night.
“They run a wing T and we focused on being sure to attack them before they could do that,” he added. “We’re still missing wide receiver Xavier Hutchens. He was out Friday and will probably be out this week too.” The Mountaineers will be looking at Big South Conference teams the rest of the regular season. They will have a bye the next week and return to action on Friday, October 2 at North Gaston. KM got off to a strong start last week, holding Catholic to three and out on the first possession and then driving 52 yards in just five plays to score on a five-yard run by quarterback Jordan Jen-
kins. Cyrus Smith hit the PAT at the 8:02 mark of the first period. After another Catholic three and out, it took the Mountaineers just two plays to score on a 59 yard run by Khareem Coleman. Catholic was able to cut the margin to 14-7 with a minute left in the half, but the Mountaineers answered quickly when freshman quarterback Jordan Jenkins scored from 20 yards out with 18 seconds left on the first half clock. The Mountaineers continued the onslaught by driving the second half kickoff 80 yards in seven plays to go up 28-7 on a 34-yard pass recep-

Khareem Coleman went around left end for a 25-yard touchdown and a 34-7 KM lead with 3:19 left in the third period. After the Mountaineers recovered a fumble at the Catholic 27, Coleman covered the distance
in just three carries to make the score 41-7. KM closed it out with 6:00 remaining when Marquis Fewell returned a blocked punt for a TD. Forestview comes to town Friday with a 0-4 record with losses to Stuart Cramer 42-6, East
Gaston 33-16, Smoky Mountain 43-6 and Lake Norman Charter 27-25. The Jaguars are led offensively by running back Palaris Newsome who is averaging 115 yards per game rushing and has scored three touchdowns.

In a match that may very well decide the Big South 5A/6A tennis championship, the Kings Mountain Women’s Tennis Team got a huge win over the South Point Red Raiders on Tuesday, September 8 in Belmont by a score of 5-4. The Mountaineers captured four of the six singles matches plus one of the doubles matches to seal the victory. Coach Rick Henderson was very happy with the
outcome of the match. Henderson remarked, “Fortunately, having Seanna Simon in the lineup was one of the keys to our success in winning the match against South Point. She was finally released from the doctor in the latter part of August. Simon had yet to practice with the team since the season started. But winning her singles match and teaming up with Grayson Howell to win a crucial doubles match was another key factor for the team.”
The Coach went on to say, “This now gives us lots of momentum and more confidence going into next week as we have an away match against North Gaston on Tuesday, and a home match against Ashbrook on Thursday. We’re looking forward to the matches this coming week and I feel that our team will keep us on track as we prepare for another Big South Conference Championship which has been our goal this year.” See TENNIS RESULTS, Page 2B

With Social Security Uncertainty, Should You Claim Benefits Early? Dear Savvy Senior, I turn 62 early next year and plan to retire soon after. Most advice says I should wait to claim Social Security because my monthly benefit will be higher. But with all the recent news about Social Security’s financial problems, I’m wondering if taking benefits early might be the safer choice. Is there ever a good reason to claim at 62? --Ready to Retire Dear Ready, You’re definitely not alone in asking this. The latest Social Security Trustees Report projects the retirement trust fund could be depleted around 2032 if Congress doesn’t act. If that happens, Social Security would still collect payroll taxes and pay bene-
fits, but retirees could face an across-the-board cut of about 22 percent.
Before you rush to file, keep things in perspective. Most experts still expect Congress to step in, as it has before, to strengthen Social Security. And even if lawmakers don’t act, waiting would still produce a higher monthly benefit because any across-theboard benefit cut would apply to everyone. While claiming at 62 means collecting benefits sooner, it also permanently locks in a smaller check. That said, there are several situations where claiming Social Security at 62 can make good financial sense. How claiming age affect your benefits You can start Social Se-
curity at 62, but doing so permanently reduces your monthly benefit by about 30 percent compared with waiting until full retirement age (67 for those born in 1960 or later). Delaying until 70 increases your benefit by about 24 percent. For example, a $2,000 monthly benefit at full retirement age would drop to about $1,400 at 62, or rise to roughly $2,480 if you wait until 70.
When claiming early makes sense For some retirees, claiming at 62 is a practical move. If you’ve stopped working and need income for basic expenses, Social Security can provide a steady check right away. It can also serve as a bridge if you retire early or lose a job in your early
60s while delaying withdrawals from retirement accounts or a pension. Some retirees also claim Social Security early to reduce withdrawals from their IRA or 401(k) during market downturns. The tradeoff is a permanently reduced lifetime benefit. For married couples, timing can be coordinated as part of a broader strategy. One spouse may claim early to bring in income while the other delays to boost their future or survivor benefit. Health is another big factor. Delaying only pays off if you live long enough to collect those higher monthly checks. The break-even point between claiming at 62 and full retirement age is around age 78 or 79. If you’re still working, be
careful here too. Before full retirement age, earnings above Social Security’s annual limit can temporarily reduce your benefit, and claiming early locks in that lower amount for life. Why delaying helps For many retirees, waiting means a larger guaranteed monthly benefit for life and often a higher lifetime payout if you live into your late 70s or beyond. It can also provide stronger protection against outliving savings. For couples, delaying the higher earner’s benefit can increase the survivor benefit, which may help provide more financial security for a surviving spouse. Before deciding, it’s smart to review your numbers. You can create a free account at SSA.gov/myac-
count to check your earnings record and estimate benefits at different ages. Tools like OpenSocialSecurity.com or MaximizeMySocialSecurity.com (a paid tool with a $49 fee) can also help you compare claiming strategies.
There’s no one-size-fitsall answer. For most people, waiting still makes the most sense. But if you need income, have health concerns or are coordinating benefits with a spouse, claiming at 62 may be the better choice. The key is to base your decision on your own circumstances – not fear about Social Security’s future. Send your questions or comments to questions@ savvysenior.org, or to Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070.
