Patriots paid honor to Kings Mountain Revolutionary War veteran Preston Goforth By Alan Hodge A passel of patriotic people gathered at the little Goforth cemetery in Kings Mountain on a sweltering July 3 to pay honor to Revolutionary War veteran Preston Goforth who was killed at the Battle of Kings Mountain October 7, 1780. Over forty folks gathered in the woods off US74 where the cemetery is located. The cemetery has been under restoration recently and the dozen or so graves there were festooned with American flags. Goforth’s gravestone had an 18th century hat and a canteen of the type he might have carried in the

battle on top as additional decoration. The event was emceed by Donnie Goforth. Margaret Ledford, a member of the Frields of the Brigade was also there. Special guests and speakers included KM Mayor Rob Wagman, Goforth descendant Jason Goforth from Nashville who played “Amazing Grace” on the harmonica, and Boy Scout Troop 92 leader John Kaiser. Marine Corps League bugler Jim Henderson. The crowd sang “God Bless America” a cappella. According to Donnie Jenkins, plans are for a large, dead tree at the cemetery edge to be removed shortly

and a flagpole installed before October 7th which will be the 246th anniversary of the Battle of Kings Mountain. The event proved that patriotism is alive and well in Cleveland County. The complete story of Preston Goforth, his unique experience at the Battle of Kings Mountain and the ongoing cemetery restorationincluding how people can donate to the cause- can be found in the June 17, 2026, Kings Mtn Herald at https:// issuu.com/wayne.kmherald/ docs/km_herald_6_17_26?fr=sNDgzYzgzNTA4NzA.

Love is the keyword at the KM and Shelby Life Enrichment Centers By Alan Hodge “All who enter here are loved.” That simple yet eloquent phrase is not only the slogan for the Life Enrichment Centers (LEC) in Kings Mountain and Shelby, but also the way of life there. The Kings Mountain LEC is located at 222 Kings Mountain Blvd., and the Shelby facility is at 110 Life Enrichment Blvd. Both are modern, spotlessly clean, spacious, and welcoming facilities where participants enjoy fun and socially enrichening activities and fellowship led by caring and professional staff members. Currently, Shelby has 92 enrolled participants with an average daily attendance of 51. Kings Mountain has 83 enrolled with an average daily attendance of 50 participants. These folks are adults 18 years of age and older that are unable to safely stay at home alone. LEC also cares for adults living with illnesses such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Intellectual Developmental Disabilities and stroke re-

“Volunteers are an integral part of Life Enrichment Center’s daily activities,” she says. “Whether individuals or groups, you can make a difference. Volunteering can be as simple as playing bingo, arts and crafts, singing, dancing, playing an instrument, cooking, or just talking. If you are interested in volunteering and willing to share your time, talents, and hobbies with our participants, please give us a call.” The LEC story is an intriguing and inspirational one. Pedestrian struck by Kings City Author Talk Revolutionary War Series Norfolk Southern train Author Warren Bingham to speak at in Kings Mountain KM Historical Museum, Sat., July 11 On July 5, Kings Mountain Police Department officers along with Kings Mountain Fire Department and Cleveland County EMS, responded to a report of a pedestrian struck by a Norfolk Southern train approximately one-half mile south of the W. Gold Street Crossing in Kings Mountain. The initial call for response came in at 4:56 a.m. According to the train’s engineer, a woman was on the tracks and did not acknowledge warning signals prior to being struck. The engineer reported that attempts were

made to stop the train; however, the train was unable to stop before the collision occurred. The female involved has been identified as 28-year old McKenzie Gibson Coleman. Norfolk Southern Police responded to the scene and are assisting with the investigation alongside the Kings Mountain Police Department Criminal Investigations Unit. This incident remains under investigation. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

Kings Mountain Historical Museum in partnership with Mauney Memorial Library will host a Revolutionary War Series of author talks for America's 250th anniversary. Warren L. Bingham will be the first author of the series, and he will be discussing his book, "George Washington's 1791 Southern Tour” on Saturday, July 11 at 11 a.m. at the KM Historical Museum. In the spring of 1791, President George Washington paid a formal visit to Virginia, the Carolinas, and Georgia; a trip that was part of Washington’s plan to visit the thirteen states during his term as president. In his book published by The History

WARREN L. BINGHAM Press, "George Washington’s 1791 Southern Tour," Warren Bingham chronicles this important eighteenth-century journey and considers the past and present of Washington’s route. Warren Bingham grew-up in North Carolina and has lived most of his adult life in Raleigh. Though Bingham has had a career in financial and philanthropic services, he has long maintained a vigorous sideline as a writer and speaker on topics in history. In 2016, his book on Washington’s Southern Tour was published and he took a year

to make over a hundred public and media appearances scattered from DC to Georgia. During the book tour, Bingham spoke twice at Mount Vernon, appeared on C-SPAN, was interviewed by National Public Radio in Atlanta, appeared on regional television and radio stations, and was featured on North Carolina BookWatch on PBS North Carolina. Over the years, he has entertained over six hundred audiences in five states and the District of Columbia. Bingham has been the keynote speaker at many signature events, including for the annual gathering of the Wachovia Historical Society in Old Salem, for the dedication of Marshall Memorial Park in Raleigh and at “Historic Halifax Day,” which celebrates North Carolina’s 1776 “declaration of independence.” As a broadcaster, Bingham was featured regularly from 2013-2016 on WPTF radio in Raleigh with his historical vignettes on North Carolina, entitled Car-

olina Color. Bingham’s research and writing have been published in many newspapers around North Carolina as well as in Carolina Banker; Mount Vernon Magazine; The Dictionary of North Carolina Biography; The Encyclopedia of North Carolina, and in the cookbook, North Carolina—An Appetizing State. He was an advisor to noted author Nathaniel Philbrick for Philbrick’s book, Travels with George, published in 2021. Bingham is a member of the Tryon Palace Commission, the group that oversees the operation of that reconstructed historical building in New Bern where Washington dined and danced during the Southern Tour. A lifelong learner, Bingham earned an undergraduate degree in history at UNCChapel Hill and a master’s in liberal studies at Hollins University. He is married to Kings Mountain native Laura Carpenter Bingham, former president of Peace College of Raleigh. FREE ADMISSION!

about the safety of their families. But what good does all that worrying do? Absolutely none! Let me ask you something - Do you know what worry is? Worry is a sin! That’s right, it is a sin! You see, when you and I worry about things, it means that we are not trusting God. In 1 Peter 5:6-7, the apostle Peter tells us - Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. (NKJV) My friends, Jesus loves you very much, and He doesn’t want you to worry about something that probably will not happen in the first place! How many times have you worried about something and nothing ever came to be

of it? I had a liver biopsy one time and I was so worried that I might have cancer. Turns out that everything was all right. Do you know what you do when you are worrying? You are wasting the precious time that God has given to you. You know, all of us can save money by putting it in the bank, but one thing we can’t save is time. So, when you worry about something, all you are doing is wasting the important time that God has blessed you with. And I promise you that you will never get that time back! Now, instead of worrying about something that might or might not happen, what should you and I be doing? I’ll tell you – we should be praying. We should ask God to help us through our difficult times and

give us the strength to keep moving forward with Him. The apostle Paul in Philippians 4:6-7 said - Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. (NKJV) One day John Wesley was walking with a troubled man who expressed his doubt as to the goodness of God. The man said, “I do not know what I shall do with all this worry and trouble.” At the same moment, Wesley saw a cow looking over a stone wall. “Do you know,” asked Wesley, “why that cow is looking over the wall?” “No,” said the man who was worried.

Wesley said, “The cow is looking over the wall because she cannot see through it. That is what you must do with your wall of trouble—look over it and avoid it.” My friends, whatever worries and troubles are facing you right now in your lives, I encourage you to look over them and avoid them. Give your difficulties to God and let Him take charge of them. There is nothing too big for Him! Glenn Turner once said, “Worrying is like a rocking chair; it gives you something to do, but it gets you nowhere.” Don’t waste your time worrying. What good will it do anyway? Instead, spend your time praising and worshipping and serving God!

PATRICK SENIOR CENTER INDEPENDENCE DAY LUNCH AND JULY 4TH BINGO PARTY! (Photos/Patrick Senior Center)

LEC From Page 1 “Life Enrichment Center is a National Model Adult Day Care and Health Service which got its beginning as an outreach mission of Shelby Presbyterian Church in 1978,” said Suzi Kennedy RN BS, one of the founding directors. “At that time, I was a leader of a Brownie troop which met at Shelby Presbyterian Church. After a Brownie meeting one day, she shared the idea of an adult day center with Shelby Presbyterian Church’s pastor, Rev. Jim Holderness. That was all it took. In no time, under Rev. Holderness’s guidance, Shelby Presbyterian Church had a steering committee of church members who helped form a board of directors, who in turn developed a mission statement, wrote policies and procedures, and established LEC as a private, not-for-profit 501c3 organization.” In July 1980, Life Enrichment Center opened in John Knox Presbyterian Church. Kennedy was the director for forty years. Toni Camp, RN, who has worked at LEC for over 28 years, became the director in June 2020. In addition to Camp, LEC has a dedicated, hard-working board of directors. LEC charges a fee for the care and services provided. In addition to self-pay, LEC has contracts with different agencies including the Veterans Administration (VA) and many long-term care insurances which may pay for adult day care and health services. LEC is Nationally Accredited through CARF International and have continually received their highest level of recognition. According to Camp, LEC is “100% mission-driven”. “LEC has been doing ‘Whatever it Takes’ to help families stay together at home and in the community by sticking to our mission to support caregivers and their loved ones by providing safe, caring and reliable adult day care for adults who would benefit from health care, meaningful programs, and opportunities for socialization and respite for their caregivers”, she says. “Caregivers fall into many different categories – working caregivers, ‘sandwich generation’ caregivers, etc. LEC is there to provide support no matter their needs or situation. The second part of our unique service is the care we provide for our participants. Symptoms of participants’ illness often prevent them from being part of the community. At LEC, participants are accepted and loved as they are without being required to ‘fit’ into a certain mold. At LEC everyone belongs! LEC believes that every individual deserves to live with dignity, purpose, connection, and choices, regardless of age or ability. We are committed to enriching lives by promoting independence, fostering meaningful relationships, and providing compassionate, person-centered care that supports the individual while strengthening families and our community. Our daily goal is to bring joy to our participants and meaning to their lives – to have them feel seen, loved, valued, and heard.” LEC brings joy into the lives of participants with a wide range of activities. Camp elaborated on that part of the LEC scene. “In a safe supportive environment with healthcare oversight, participants can continue to enjoy activities they love but may no longer be able to do on their own such as cooking, gardening, music, dancing, attending church, and socializing,” she said. “Our activities are based on a participant’s lifelong interests, hobbies, and sometimes even job duties they held during their working years. We focus on strengths and abilities instead of disabilities or limitations. Since many of our participants may not be able to be active in the community, thanks to our wonderful volunteers, we bring the com-

Peace to everyone at LEC from Sun Peeler.

Leonard Hunt enjoying hot coffee at LEC. munity to them. Special activity programs include proms, Christmas Pageants, holiday celebrations, and awards days just to name a few.” Everyone benefits from having LEC in the region. “Life Enrichment Center serves Cleveland and surrounding counties,” Camp explained. “We benefit the community by helping caregivers keep their loved ones at home and in the community. This provides caregivers with an opportunity to receive respite (a break in the caregiving role) or remain in the workforce. Caregivers have a peace of mind knowing that their loved one is in a safe, caring, and reliable atmosphere. Participants receive health/medical monitoring such as blood sugar checks, blood pressure checks, weight checks, and daily monitoring for changes in medical condition. This daily monitoring often catches health concerns early – decreasing Emergency Room visits and hospitalizations. The daily health monitoring of participants with chronic illnesses or dementia often allows them to remain in their home longer – giving caregivers a highly cost-effective alternative to nursing home placement. LEC improves the quality of life for vulnerable seniors and adults with disabilities by providing socialization, nutritional meals, health monitoring and promoting independence.” To learn more about Life Enrichment Center and how you or someone you are caring for can benefit call Donna Tesner at the Neisler Center in Kings Mountain (704739-4858) or Emily Littlejohn at the Shelby location (704-484-0405) to schedule a tour or free trial visit. Follow LEC on Facebook at Life Enrichment Center Adult Day Care & Health Services and visit the website at www.lifeenrichmentcenter.org. Life Enrichment Center is open from 5:30 am – 6:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

Burns selected as next Head Coach of Gardner-Webb softball By Michael Covil GWU Assistant Director of Strategic Communication Gardner-Webb University Vice President and Director of Athletics Brendan Fahey has announced Matt Burns as the next head coach of the Gardner-Webb softball program. "We are excited to welcome Matt to our Runnin' Bulldogs family," Fahey said. "Matt has proven himself at all levels of the game and we believe he's the right person to take this program to the highest level. We look forward to seeing our student-athletes take big steps towards success both on the field and in the classroom under his leadership, helping to establish Gardner-Webb softball as a true contender." Burns arrives in Boiling Springs having spent the previous three seasons on staff at Ball State, first as an assistant and recruiting coordinator before being promoted to the Cardinals associate head coach position before the 2025 campaign. During his time at Ball State, Burns helped lead the Cardinals program to new heights, highlighted by a strong offense which he both directly coached and recruited. Ball State finished as the MAC Tournament runner-up in 2024, then finished in third place in 2025. The 2024 Ball State team was notable for its power and discipline at the plate, finishing second in the MAC in on base percentage, slugging, and third in average and home runs. The 2025 team was perhaps even more impressive, finishing among the MAC leaders again in runs, runs batted in, on base percentage, total bases, home runs, walks and steals. Burns coached six different All-MAC players between 2023 and 2026, including one MAC Player of

MATT BURNS The Year selection. Prior to arriving at Ball State, Burns was back in the Carolinas, spending just shy of two years at the College of Charleston as the Cougars recruiting coordinator and assistant coach. Across the 2022 and 2023 seasons, Burns helped turn around a program fresh off a 6-44 season in 2021, leading College of Charleston to consecutive CAA Tournament appearances behind a recruiting class ranked 21st nationally. Four players received AllCAA honors during Burns' tenure, including the CAA Rookie of the Year. Burns also comes to Gardner-Webb with previous experience in the Big South, having served as an assistant coach at Longwood during the 2021 season. Burns coached hitters, infielders and catchers during his stint in Farmville, mentoring a trio of All-Big South players as the Lancers won 14 conference games. Burns got his first head coaching experience during the 2020 season at Bucknell, taking the reins as the Bison's acting head coach during the shortened season. Prior to being promoted during the season, Burns was on staff as an assistant at Bucknell from 2017 to 2020, leading recruiting efforts, and coaching hitters and catchers. Bucknell was also known for its offensive prowess under

Burns, with the Bison setting a team single season record for home runs in 2018, and leading the Patriot League in batting average, on base percentage, slugging and home runs in both 2018 and 2019. Burns’ coaching led to major success, as Bucknell finished second in the Patriot League both years, winning 55 games with a combined 27-8 conference record. Before arriving at Bucknell, Burns got his start in softball at Skidmore College where he was an assistant between 2015 and 2017. Once again in charge of coaching hitters and catchers while handling recruiting, Burns coached five First Team All-Liberty League players and one Second Team NFCA All-American during his tenure. Burns comes from a significant baseball background, both as a coach and as a player. He was a fouryear starter at Plattsburgh State from 2006 to 2010, before getting into coaching immediately after his playing career. As a baseball coach, Burns spent time at Akron, SUNY New Paltz, Bard College and SUNY Oneonta before moving into softball. A graduate of SUNY Plattsburgh, Burns earned a combined Bachelor of Arts/ Master of Science for Teachers in 2011. He will arrive at Gardner-Webb, joined by his wife, Danielle, their son, Derek, and daughter, Gabriella. "I'm incredibly grateful to President Nate Evans, Brendan Fahey, and Clare Alaimo for the opportunity to lead the Gardner-Webb softball program," said Burns. “My family and I couldn't be more excited to get to campus, become part of the community, and begin building something special. 'Sko Dawgs!"

CHRIS GOTTERUP

Chris Gotterup wins John Deere Classic Chris Gotterup shot a final round 62 to win the John Deere Classic at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois, on Sunday, July 5. This was Gotterup’s fifth career win on the PGA Tour. Gotterup made up a five-shot deficit Sunday by closing with a 9-under 62 to win the John Deere Classic for his fourth PGA Tour title in the last 12 months. Gotterup avoided a playoff when Ben Kohles, trying to win for the first

time in his 120th start, hit his approach to the 18th hole left and into the water, winding up with a double bogey. Gotterup defends his title in the Genesis Scottish Open next week, where he began his remarkable run to reach the top 10 in the world. He held off Rory McIlroy a year ago in Scotland and then won the Sony Open and the WM Phoenix Open this year.

locations. Carcass importation restrictions for deer originating from outside of North Carolina remain in place. In addition, through the CWD Management Assistance Program (CWDMAP) landowners and hunters with exclusive hunting rights on private property can apply for additional tags to use during the hunting season to harvest more deer on properties in CWD Management and Surveillance Areas or within 10 miles of a CWD positive detection. The number of tags provided is based on acreage enrolled. Applications open July 1. “Hunters are our best tool to manage CWD,” said Deer Biologist April Boggs Pope. “Hunters in CWD-confirmed areas can help to slow this disease from spreading while maintaining quality opportunities for deer hunters across the state. We expect the new hunting regulations will move buck harvest to earlier in the season, which can help reduce the spread of CWD by decreasing the dispersal of

CWD Surveillance and Management Areas have been removed and replaced with statewide requirements for disposing of deer carcasses. The final disposal (either directly by a hunter or indirectly when hunters use a processor, taxidermist or trash service) of non-edible portions of deer carcasses and carcass parts originating from anywhere inside North Carolina shall be in one of the following methods: o In a lined landfill; o Buried 3 feet below ground and 300 feet from a waterbody; or o Lawfully left on the ground within the county of origin. The new hunting rules will be printed in the North Carolina Inland Fishing, Hunting and Trapping Regulations Digest and available to view online beginning Aug. 1. NCWRC stresses the importance of hunters following these rules when transporting or disposing of deer carcasses; improper disposal may lead to moving CWD to new

In efforts to control the spread of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) is announcing new deer hunting regulations that will offer hunters increased deer harvest opportunities in counties where CWD has been confirmed. New regulations for the 2026-2027 deer hunting season include: • The introduction of a Special Early Season for antlered deer Aug. 22-23, 2026, in all CWD Management Areas using any lawful weapon. These areas include Cumberland, Forsyth, Sampson, Stokes, Surry, Wilkes and Yadkin counties. Baiting is still prohibited in these areas before September 1. • A one-week-earlier start to the blackpowder season (Oct. 31) and gun season (Nov. 14) in the Northwestern CWD Management Area (Forsyth, Stokes, Surry, Wilkes and Yadkin counties). • The restrictions on transporting deer carcasses from

young bucks and the amount of contact that bucks have with other deer as the rut begins.” Once CWD spreads, it can be difficult to find strategies that work across larger areas. “The best time to act to reduce the spread of CWD is when prevalence is low and while the disease is found in isolated locations,” said Wildlife Health Biologist Miranda Turner. “During this time, we can target our management efforts to the herds that are affected. These management actions make the largest difference to slow the spread of the disease.” NCWRC is also encouraging hunters and the public to learn more about the disease and offers a dedicated webpage as a comprehensive resource for CWD in North Carolina. “We are noticing a lot of misinformation being spread about CWD, how it’s transmitted, whether it’s a threat to deer or humans, and whether it’s even a real disease,” said Boggs Pope. NCWRC has posted “Myths vs. Facts” information on its website to help clear up any confusion related to CWD. “Unfortunately, CWD is a major threat to deer populations. Unlike Hem-

orrhagic Disease (sometimes called “Blue tongue”), CWD is 100% fatal and all white-tailed deer are susceptible to the disease,” said Boggs Pope. “CWD acts in the background, moving slowly, contaminating the environment, and causing effects to the deer population that are hard to see until prevalence is too high to make meaningful progress against the disease. Deer infected with CWD not only die of the disease but also

die at a higher rate from other causes, as shown in scientific studies like the Arkansas CWD Deer Study. Large Hemorrhagic Disease outbreaks can cause short-term declines in the population, but some deer will survive with immunity, and populations can rebound relatively quickly.” Turner added “Eventually, as CWD prevalence increases, herds and deer densities begin to decline as deer have

shorter lifespans and produce fewer offspring because of the effects of the disease on their overall health. That is why it is so important to take immediate action before CWD starts having large impacts on our deer herds.” Older deer are the most affected, but any deer, even fawns, can become infected. This is why the NCWRC encourages hunters in areas with CWD to have their harvested deer tested, no matter the age. CWD testing is available for free via accessible freezers located across the state, or through meat processors and taxidermists participating in NCWRC’s Cervid Health Cooperator Program. Starting with the upcoming 2026-2027 deer season, hunters can expect to receive their CWD test results faster than ever before, due to a NCWRC decision to switch CWD testing methods. “This switch should allow hunters to receive their test results much more quickly, while still providing accurate results via a federally certified CWD testing method,” said Turner. CWD is a transmissible disease that is fatal to deer. It is spread through infected body fluids, namely saliva, urine and feces, and the movement of infected deer carcasses and carcass parts. Addi-

tionally, CWD is known to cause longterm environmental contamination in soils, vegetation, and waterbodies. Since CWD was initially detected in North Carolina in early 2022, NCWRC has collected and tested samples from nearly 100,000 deer for CWD. The number of confirmed cases remains low in North Carolina; however, cases there were confirmed in two additional counties last year. There are now seven counties from three different areas of the state with confirmed CWD positive deer. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), to date, there have been no reported cases of CWD infection in people. While there is no current scientific evidence confirming that CWD can infect humans, the possibility cannot be ruled out, so the CDC recommends not eating a deer that tests positive for CWD. Visit ncwildlife.gov/CWD for updates and to learn more about the agency’s management of CWD in North Carolina. Do Men Get Osteoporosis? Dear Savvy Senior, Can men get osteoporosis or is it mostly a problem for women? When I fell and broke my wrist last winter, the ER doctor told me I might have osteoporosis, but I never followed up. What can you tell me? --Almost 70 Dear Almost, A lot of people think osteoporosis is only a women’s issue, but men can get it too – especially as they get older. And like women, men often don’t realize they have it until a bone breaks. Osteoporosis is often called a silent disease because it weakens bones over time, making them thin, brittle and more likely to break, usually without

any warning signs. While women are about four times more likely to develop it, men aren’t immune. About 2 million American men have osteoporosis, and another 12 million have low bone density, known as osteopenia, which can eventually progress to the disease.

One of the biggest problems is that men are less likely to be tested. Even after a fracture like yours, many never get a bone density scan. Doctors sometimes overlook it in men, and men themselves may not realize they’re at risk. The bones most often affected are the hip, spine and wrist, and hip fractures in particular can lead to serious complications and long recoveries.

Who is at risk In women, menopause speeds up bone loss. In men, it usually happens more gradually, but age is still a major factor. Your risk rises if you are over 70, thin or underweight, smoke, drink heavily, have a parent with osteoporosis or have already broken a bone, as you have.

Certain medical conditions can also increase your risk. These include rheumatoid arthritis, celiac disease, low testosterone, overactive thyroid, COPD and kidney or liver disease. Neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis or a past stroke can raise the risk because they affect balance and mobility. Long term use of corti-

costeroids, some prostate cancer treatments, acid reflux drugs, antidepressants and anti-seizure medications can weaken bones too.

Testing A smart next step is a bone density test. All men 70 and older should talk to their doctor about being screened. Men over 50 who’ve had a fracture or have other risk factors should get tested too. The scan is simple, painless and takes only a few minutes. Medicare and most private insurance plans usually cover it. Prevention When it comes to protecting your bones, the basics really matter. Get enough calcium from foods like low fat milk, yogurt and

cheese, leafy green vegetables, beans, almonds and canned salmon or sardines. Men under 70 need about 1,000 milligrams a day. Those 71 and older need 1,200 milligrams. Vitamin D is just as important because it helps your body absorb calcium. Most adults over 50 need 800 to 1,000 international units daily, through sunlight, food or a supplement if needed.

Regular weight bearing exercise such as walking, along with strength training two or three times a week, helps build and maintain bone. It also improves balance, which can prevent falls. You should also avoid smoking, and limit alcohol and caffeine.

Treatment If testing shows significant bone loss, medications such as Fosamax, Actonel, Reclast, Prolia, Forteo or Tymlos may be prescribed. Your doctor can explain the benefits and possible side effects and help you decide what is appropriate. Since you have already had a fracture, this is not something to ignore. A simple test and a plan now could help you stay strong and avoid a more serious break down the road. Send your questions or comments to quest i o n s @ s a v v y s e n i o r. org, or to Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070.
