At approximately 4:48 p.m. on April 3, 2026, officers with the Kings Mountain Police Department responded to reports of shots fired at the Silver Express convenience store located at 506 E King Street in Kings Mountain.
Upon arrival, officers determined that the suspect had fled the scene prior to law enforcement arrival. Detectives with the Kings Mountain Police Department responded and initiated an investigation.
Preliminary findings indicate that the incident began as a verbal altercation between Ahmad Leggett and the victim near Little Caesars. During the altercation, Leggett displayed a black handgun. Bystanders intervened, preventing further escalation at that time.

The Kings Mountain City Council Special Meeting held on April 2, 2026, began with routine administrative tasks but quickly transitioned into uncharted legal territory for the municipality. While the council successfully addressed a looming April 13 deadline to designate a Voting Delegate for the North Carolina League of Municipalities Board of Directors, the primary focus of the evening shifted to a discussion on ethics and official conduct.
City Attorney Mickey Corry introduced an item never before addressed by the Kings Mountain City Council: the formal
process for censuring a member of the governing body. Corry grounded the discussion in state law, citing NC General Statute § 160A-86, a 2009 mandate outlining the ethical standards expected of city representatives.
Further emphasizing the weight of these standards, the attorney cited § 160A87, which requires elected officials to participate in regular, state-approved continuing education to ensure they remain fully aware of endorsed ethical protocols. The potential outcome of these alleged violations, if proven, is a formal censure of the involved council person.
The atmosphere grew tense as the public looked
for specifics. While some attendees speculated that the meeting was a response to a common law forgery incident involving Councilman Scott Neisler, Attorney Corry abstained from disclosing the details. He refused to affirm who the allegations were against or who was asserting them, stating firmly that he would not “contaminate the investigation.”
“I will not accept verbal complaints,” Corry asserted. “I expect fairness to the person the allegations are against.”
In order to maintain fairness, Corry established a strict timeline and procedure:
• Written complaints: All allegations must be

submitted in writing to the City Attorney by midweek (the week of April 6–10, 2026).
• Transparency: Once received, copies will be provided to the full Council and the accused party.
• Due Process: A public hearing will eventually be held to allow the accused to rebuke the allegations.
A Divided Vote
The motion to begin the formal investigation and engage outside counsel—a move intended to avoid any conflict of interest—passed with a 5 to 2 vote. Councilmembers Heather Lemond and Scott Neisler cast the dissenting votes. Neisler explained his opposition by stating, “The reason I voted against it is because the city does not need to incur debt for an attorney; it’s an extra expense that is simply not necessary.

“When asked if he had encountered such a situation previously, Attorney Corry noted the gravity of the moment. “I have never
witnessed this type of action—which could lead to a possible censure—not here or anywhere else in my career,” he stated.
He concluded by saying there is no time frame available for the length of time this entire process may take.

is on the right path, and we need to codify this policy and make it the law of the land,” said Congressman Moore.

On Good Friday, Congressman Tim Moore (NC14) introduced H.R. 8182, the Banning Perpetrators of Religious Persecution Act, to restrict visas for individuals who have directed, authorized, significantly supported, participated in, or carried out violations of religious freedom. It also expands visa ineligibility to terrorist or non-state actors responsible for violations of religious freedom, in addition to foreign government officials responsible for the persecution of religious groups.
“Across parts of Nigeria, Christians and other religious minorities are being hunted and brutally executed simply because of their faith. These are acts of pure evil, carried out by people who show no regard for human life or basic decency. Those responsible for these or similar atrocities should never, under any circumstance, be welcomed into the United States, and doing so would be a betrayal of the American people and our values. The Trump administration
“Nigeria is just one of many examples where non-state actors and terrorist groups are carrying out kidnappings and killings of Christians and other religious minorities. It is entirely unacceptable for the U.S., a nation founded on the principle of religious freedom, to allow such foreign nationals into our country. By codifying the Trump administration’s directive to bar these malign actors from obtaining U.S. visas, we are establishing robust consequences for violators and sending a loud and clear message to the rest of the world that America will not tolerate any attack on religious freedom. I am grateful to Congressman Moore for joining me in leading this critical legislation in the House,” said Senator Budd, sponsor of the Senate companion, S. 3679.
Specifically, this legislation:
• Requires the Secretary of State to make the names of all aliens determined to be inadmissible publicly accessible.
• Provides an exception if the Secretary of State determines that the public release of the identity of such an alien would have adverse foreign policy consequences.

Congressman Tim Moore represents the 14th Congressional District of North Carolina, including Cleveland, Gaston, Burke, and Rutherford Counties, as well as parts of Mecklenburg and Polk Counties. • Codifies Trump Administration policies enacted following reports of brutal killings and violence against religious minorities in Nigeria.

Over the years, Kings Mountain has been visited by a variety of celebrities.

One such celebrity was Jerry Lee Lewis, as Hayne Neisler recently pointed out in his Facebook group, “Kings Mountain History.”
For someone under 40, the easiest way to describe Jerry Lee Lewis is to think of him as the moment music stopped behaving and started exploding. In the 1950s, most performers were polished, controlled, and predictable. Then Jerry Lee Lewis showed up in 1956 and flipped the entire script. He didn’t just play the piano; he attacked it. He pounded the keys, kicked the bench, stood on top of it, and turned every performance into something that felt unpredictable and a little dangerous.
His songs like ‘Great Balls of Fire’ and ‘Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On’ weren’t just hits; they were experiences. Audiences weren’t just listening; they were watching someone push boundaries. Even younger readers might even compare him to Lil Nas X.
Back in the 1950s, this kind of behavior was shocking. Jerry Lee Lewis brought a raw, almost rebellious energy that helped define what rock & roll would become. That’s what made him so influential. He didn’t just play music; he changed how it felt to experience it.
At his core, Jerry Lee Lewis was one of the first artists to embody the idea of a ‘rockstar’ - someone whose personality, attitude, and performance were just as important as the music itself. He made rock & roll louder, wilder, and more alive, and in doing so, helped shape the energy that still drives live music today.
With that in mind, let’s go back to September 15, 1958, when this rock ‘n roll superstar

appeared here at Kings Mountain City Stadium. Hayne shared, “It was a tumultuous year for Lewis. Early in the year, he had smash chart-topping hits, ‘Great Balls of Fire’ and ‘Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On.’
“Then, in May 1958, Lewis began a disastrous 37-city tour of England. After only three shows, the British press discovered Lewis’s bride, Myra, was only 13 years old. Worse yet, Myra was Lewis’ first cousin, once removed. Public outrage caused the tour to be canceled, and Lewis saw his one-night concert fees drop from $10,000 to $ 250.
“Despite this, Lewis played to a sellout crowd here in Kings Mountain. For over two hours, dressed in a bright red jacket, Lewis energetically performed his biggest hits. The Kings Mountain Herald
reported that one of his biggest fans was a Kings Mountain grandmother who danced barefoot throughout the show.”
Bill Sellers commented on Hayne’s post, sharing, “He had his piano on the back of a flatbed tractor-trailer and stayed at the Kings Mountain Motel.”
Judy Bowen added, “He was drunk and fell off that flatbed truck. I remember that show.”
Steven A. Wells recalled, “I’m thinking that Jerry Lee Lewis may have stopped at the Silver Villa! When I went to work there in about 1960 as a Curb hop, I was 13. I distinctly remember some of the workers talking about Jerry Lewis coming by one day and leaving a hundred-dollar tip.”
Drew Fulton added, “I was always told that the police escorted him out of town and told him
never to come back to KM. I guess it worked.”
Sandra Summit Wilson explained how parents of teens perceived Lewis, “My Dad thought he and Elvis were crude….”
Jerry Lee Lewis continued to perform live well into his 80s. I remember seeing him perform once after an early Hornets basketball game at the Charlotte Coliseum on Tyvola Road, and his performance style hadn’t changed.
Even after health issues slowed him down, he still appeared on stage occasionally into the late 2010s.
His last full live performance took place in 2019 at a festival in Tennessee. By that point, he was in his mid-80s and physically limited, but he still sat at the piano, his signature place, and performed for fans who understood they were witnessing the closing chapter of a historic career.
Most artists fade out or retire quietly. Jerry Lee Lewis didn’t. He kept performing across decades of changing music—from 1950s rock & roll to country crossovers and beyond— remaining a living link to the very birth of modern music. He began performing when rock & roll was just being born—and continued until it had become part of history.
We are bombarded daily with news, advertisements, telemarketers, text advertisements and annoying phone calls. All of this is physically and emotionally draining.

For the last 20 years I have listened to, watched and read the news. Sadly, most of the news is bad, negative and depressing. Actually, so much of television is filled with bad news, violence and sad stories. So much of programming is filled with assaults, hate, homicides, intense sexuality and overall bad stuff. A heavy dose of this each day does no one any good.
We need more music and we need it daily. Too many people only get a little music while driving in their cars, if they remember to turn their radio on. Even then many turn on a talk radio station. Talk radio is very interesting but then again it may be the same themes that are on cable news programs you watch on television.
You need a break from this. There are many ways to obtain your favorite music today. Turn your radio on. There are so many good hard-working stations that are playing music you enjoy. You might have to scan through a few stations but you can find one. Whether it is current pop music or old rock, country or gospel, if you search you will find one that plays some music you enjoy. Also, there is lots of music available through the Internet. Through YouTube, Apple music, and more you can find something to listen to. Listen to music when you are exercising. I used to try to treadmill when watching the news. That’s okay, but I move faster and longer if I’m listening to good music. Try doing your house cleaning or cleaning out your garage with some good music on. Mowing the grass while listening to music is not a good idea because you have to crank the music up so loud you will damage your hearing.
We need music like we need sunshine. Music is like a B-12 shot to the spirit and we need an hour or more of it daily to boost and sometimes calm our spirit. If it makes you smile or dance a little then that’s all the better. There is so much intensity in life today. People are stressed over Iran. We are stressed about the price of gasoline, groceries and the cost of daily life. We let politics and issues make us uptight. We should not live our lives this way. Music that you enjoy will help you to loosen up a little bit. I am not saying we should hide our heads in the sand. Just give your spirit a break. Turn off the news for a while and listen to music for an hour or two. Try it and see if it helps. Dr. Glenn Mollette is a syndicated columnist read in all fifty states. A family from way back in the hills went to the big city for the first time in their lives. They had some financial business that needed to be taken care of at a certain bank. When the family arrived at the bank, their mouths dropped open because they could not believe how tall the buildings were in the city and how many cars were going up and down the streets. They were also amazed at the number of people who

were all around them. This family had never seen anything like this before in their lives! Well, the father and the son decided to go into the bank to take care of the business they had come for. So, the father left his wife and his daughter in the car. When the father and son walked into the front door of the bank, their mouths again dropped open. The bank building was the fanciest thing they had never seen before.
One thing in particular stood out to the father – the elevator. The father watched as an elderly woman got on the elevator, and the door closed behind her. Then, about a minuteand-a-half later, the door reopened and out came a beautiful young woman. The father looked at his son and he said, “Son, go get your mother. I want to run her through that contraption!”
Most of us would love to have a new body. Too many people are in search of the perfect body! Either we weigh too much, or we have too many wrinkles, or we don’t have enough hair,
or we are too short. The point is that we would like to look differently than we do right now!
But did you realize that if you know Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior, you will receive a new, glorified, perfect body one day? When will that take place? When the Rapture occurs! You ask, “What is the Rapture?”
Well, the Rapture is when Jesus comes in the clouds to gather all those who have given their hearts to Him. And on that glorious day, all the saved will meet Jesus in the air, and we will go back to heaven to worship and praise and serve Him forever! And on top of that, we will receive our brand-new, resurrected, perfect bodies!
My friends, I truly believe we are living in the last days, and I believe that Jesus could come back any moment for His church.
Jesus, while speaking to His disciples, in Matthew 24:42-44 said – “Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming. 43 But know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into. 44 Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”
(NKJV)
So, as you examine your heart and your life right now, can you say that you are ready to meet Jesus? If you are only 99 percent

sure that you are ready to see Jesus, then you are not ready! Right now, right where you are, I hope and pray that you will surrender yourself completely to Him. And today, I trust that you will live your life with anticipation that this could be the day that Jesus comes back.
What a future you can have if Christ is number one in your life. My prayer for you is that you will let Jesus be your Lord, and you will live for Him as if today is your last day on this earth. So, again, I ask you – “Are you ready to meet Jesus?” I hope you are because today just might be the day He comes back!

The word frankfurter comes from Frankfurt, Germany, where pork sausages similar to hot dogs originated. These sausages, Frankfurter Würstchen, were known since the 13th century and given to the people on the event of imperial coronations, starting with the coronation of Maximilian II, Holy Roman Emperor, as King. "Wiener" refers to Vienna, Austria (German: Wien), home to a sausage made of a mixture of pork and beef. Johann Georg Lahner, an 18th/19th century butcher

"This concert takes me back to my high school days of playing with the Charlotte Youth Symphony Orchestra (CYSO)," Kinlaw said. "I played violin as a child for many years. Then later, I played clarinet with CYSO. Now I am so looking forward to playing alongside the Gaston String Orchestra."
The program roster will include "Egmont Overture" by Ludwig Beethoven, "On Parade Quick March" by Amanda C.E. Aldridge and "Irish Suite - Part 1" by Leroy Anderson. In good news, if you

Formed in 1992, the nonprofit group strives to unite the community through free, high-quality live music. The band also provides area students with a platform where they can grow their musical talents, learning to perform with excellence. It is not definitively known who started the practice of serving the sausage in the bun. One of the strongest claims comes from Harry M. Stevens who was a food concessionaire. The claim is that, while working at the New York Polo Grounds in 1901, he came upon the idea of using small French rolls to hold the sausages when the waxed paper they were using ran out.

support of the event by dedicating one of the Demon Deacons’ home games to be played in Shelby each year. The game serves as a tribute to Jim Horn, a Wake Forest graduate, multi-sport athlete, and member of the university’s 1955 national championship baseball team. Horn also played for American Legion Post 82’s 1951 state championship team.
A driving force behind the success of the ALWS in Shelby, Horn served as co-chairman of the local organizing committee alongside Eddie Holbrook from 2002 until his passing in 2015. His contributions, along with those of his wife Linda, were instrumental in establishing and growing the event. Linda Horn remains actively involved and continues to lead preparations for the tribute game.
“It is an honor to welcome
Coach Walter and Wake Forest back to Shelby,” said ALWS Executive Committee Chairman Eddie Holbrook. “Coach Walter has been an incredible supporter of this event, and his willingness to bring a home game here each year speaks volumes. This game is a meaningful way to honor Jim Horn’s legacy while providing our community with an outstanding baseball experience.”
Gates at Keeter Stadium will open at 4:00 p.m., giving fans the opportunity to watch pregame batting practice. Concessions will be available featuring a variety of classic ballpark favorites including hot dogs, hamburgers, fries, and beverages.
The ALWS Executive Committee invites the entire community to come out, celebrate, and enjoy an evening of exciting college baseball while honoring a legacy that continues to shape the event today.

If one has been hunting or fishing long enough, he has a few stories that fit into the category of either questionable or unbelievable. In fact, those tales are so unbelievable that without a witness to confirm the event, most would not only question their veracity but would deny the outcome. I can quickly think about three such stories; all of which involve fishing. One night I was fishing with

Again, I have witnesses. Another time, while fishing in the late summer, my friend dropped his glasses in the lake. lake levels. There on top of a stump were his glasses. And lastly, just a few years ago while fishing in the river, I cast my lure and caught two small-mouths at the same time; both hooked to my tiny torpedo. What I remember about that was not only the two that were hooked but a third that was trying to get its part as well. Yep, there’s no doubt each of those stories can conjure up some serious misgivings even though all of them can certainly be deemed possible. A story that is humanly impossible however, could only be designed by God. And that is what the story of the resurrection is –a humanly impossible story that is so inconceivable, it can only be designed by God.
One of the greatest proofs of Christianity is not just the fact of the resurrection. In fact, non-Christians do not believe that something like that actually happened. But perhaps what a person ought to come to grips with first is just who would design such an odd way to save the world. What human would come up with the crazy idea of a death on a cross, a burial, and then
a resurrection to defeat sin? What man would really take something as historically inhuman and cruel as a cross and decide they can make it become a universal symbol of hope and redemption? The answer is no man. Only God would think of something as cruel as a cross and as impossible as a resurrection, marry them together, and design a plan for mankind to be made right with his Creator. My friend, if you’re stuck on the reality of a resurrection for you to believe that Jesus was the Son of God, perhaps you just need to decide if anyone other than God could have come up with such an unlikely story.

Dear Savvy Senior, Does Medicare offer any coverage that helps beneficiaries quit smoking?
New Beneficiary
Dear New, If you’re ready to quit smoking, Medicare can indeed help! Medicare Part B covers up to eight face-to-face counseling sessions per year to help you kick the habit, and if you have a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan, certain smoking-cessation medications are covered as well. Here’s a guide to help you get started.
It’s Never Too Late
According to the Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) 8.3 percent of Americans age 65 and older
still smoke. Many older smokers indicate that they would like to quit, but because of the nicotine, which is extremely addictive, it’s very difficult to do.
Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable illness, responsible for an estimated one-fifth of deaths in the United States each year. But research shows that quitting, even after age 65, greatly reduces your risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer, osteoporosis and many other diseases. It also helps you breathe easier, smell, and taste better, and can save you money. An $8 pack-a-day smoker, for example, saves about $240 after one month without cigarettes, and nearly $2,880 after one
year.
How to Quit
The first step you need to take is to set a “quit date,” but give yourself a few weeks to get ready. During that time, you may want to start by reducing the number or the strength of cigarettes you smoke to begin weaning yourself.
Also check out overthe-counter nicotine replacement products – patches, gum and lozenges – to help curb your cravings (these are not covered by Medicare). And just prior to your quit day get rid of all cigarettes and ashtrays in your home, car, and place of work, and try to clean up and even spray air freshener. The smell of smoke can be a powerful trigger.
Studies have shown that you have a much better chance of quitting if you have help. So, tell your friends, family, and coworkers of your plan to quit. Others knowing can be a helpful reminder and motivator.
Then get some counseling. Don’t go it alone. Start by contacting your doctor about smoking cessation counseling covered by Medicare and find out about the prescription antismoking drugs (bupropion and varenicline) that can help reduce your nicotine craving.
You can also get free one-on-one telephone counseling and referrals to local smoking
cessation programs through your state quit line at 800-QUIT-NOW or call the National Cancer Institute free smoking quit line at 877-44U-QUIT.
It’s also important to identify and write down the times and situations you’re most likely to smoke and make a list of things you can do to replace it or distract yourself. Some helpful suggestions when the smoking urge arises are to call a friend or one of the free quit lines, keep your mouth occupied with some sugar-free gum, sunflower seeds, carrots, fruit or hard candy, go for a walk, read a magazine, listen to music or take a hot bath.
The intense urge to
smoke lasts about three to five minutes, so do what you can to wait it out. It’s also wise to avoid drinking alcohol and steer clear of other smokers while you’re trying to quit. Both can trigger powerful urges to smoke.
