Science camp had kids putting on their thinking caps By Alan Hodge Alan.bannernews@gmail.com

While some kids spent their summer gazing at their smartphone or fidget spinner, a group in Cramerton learned about forensic science, built rockets, and dissected a sheep brain. The later assemblage of young lads and lassies attended the annual summer science camp organized and taught by Jennifer Ramsey and Marcie Mauldin who teach AIG (academically/intellectually gifted) students at Belmont Central and New Hope elementary during the regular school year. Their camp is not officially affiliated with Gaston County Schools. “We want to let the kids use science to develop their analytical skills,” Ramsey says. “We started the camp because we felt like their wasn't enough hands-on science being taught in school.” The camp consists of two one-week sessions and takes place at the Cramerton Community Center, courtesy of Cramerton Parks and Rec. This year marks the camp's eighth year. Last week saw 29 campers laughing and learn-

ing. “We had a waiting list a mile long,” Ramsey said. Projects the kids worked on were challenging and the results rewarding. “We had them dissect a sheep brain so they could learn its parts and what they do,” Ramsey said. Another project involved building solar powered “cars” out of cardboard, a small solar panel, gears, and wheels. “The car helped the kids learn about different types of energy and the importance of solar energy,” Ramsey said. Other things the kids constructed included dowel rod and popsicle stick bridges, catapults, and soda pop bottle rockets propelled by air and water. The campers also got to put their sleuthing skills to work by learning how to test for DNA and using a microscope to find forensic evidence. One group of “older” kids who had taken part in the camp in years past were on hand to act as See SCIENCE CAMP page 2

For the third year in a row, the City of Belmont has been honored as a Main Street community by the North Carolina Dept. of Commerce's Main Street and Rural Planning Center. Belmont was one of 39 towns in the state to receive the designation. In our area, Cherryville and Kings Mountain also received the award. North Carolina Main Street and Main Street America (the national affiliation) use two ways to arrive at the results- A Downtown statistics report to measure the economic impact and revitalization efforts (July of each year for the previous fiscal year) and a Program Assessment that evaluates the local Main Street program to ensure that communities are utilizing the Main Street approach, have active boards and committees, staff and member training, have a broad base support, and attend training, etc. The assessment is what the

Belmont's downtown director, Vicki Davis, is currently compiling stats for 2017. “Those communities meeting the standards understand that downtown economic

Belmont’s vibrant downtown area was one reason the city was recently named a North Carolina Main Street community for the third year in a row. A sampling of numbers from Belmont's 2016 application (for period July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2016) saw five downtown facades redone, five building rehab projects completed, and seven public inprovement projects completed. the kids out and educated,” he said. Student Avery Davis was at the camp for the third year this summer. She will be going to Belmont Middle School in the fall. “The experiments are fun and we learn new things,” she said. “I enjoyed the dissection

and forensic science parts.” After all the science, the kids still got a chance to exercise their bodies as well as their minds. “We take them out on the playground and let them burn off some energy,” Ramsey said.

Tri-County Animal Rescue Pet of the Week

Tri-County Animal Rescue Pet of the Week is two little Terrier mixed brothers named Diego and Niko. They are 4 months old and weigh about 10 pounds. Both are good with everyone including other pets. They have short hair so a bath and brushing will keep them looking beautiful. They are lovers who give kisses freely. They are very playful so another dog companion would be a plus. They are neutered, current on vaccines, heartworm negative and micro-chipped. They will be looking for you this weekend! The Terrier is a bright, clever, athletic breed and is on top of everything that's going on in his environment. Nothing gets by him. Terriers require full participation in the family and vigorous daily play sessions, especially ball chasing, which they tend to be passionate about – even obsessive. Too little exercise, too little companionship, and too little mental stimulation will quickly lead to boredom. Most Terriers are happygo-lucky and friendly with strangers, but in the presence of strange dogs, keep them close and under control. If the other dog minds its own manners, the Terrier will usually adhere to a "live and let live" philosophy. Please come out to our adoption event this weekend. If you are looking for an addition to your family, come out and meet our pets. We have many available pets at the Gastonia PetSmart located at 3698 East Franklin Boulevard this Friday from 6-9 pm and Saturday noon to 6 pm. Tri-County Animal Rescue is a non-profit organization serving Lincoln, Gaston and other surrounding counties. We are committed to ending pet homelessness in this area and we need your continued support. If you cannot adopt a pet, then support Tri-County in other ways. We need volunteers and donations to continue our mission of finding homes for these unwanted animals. Please help Tri-County Animal Rescue continue to save pets by adopting your next pet this weekend? Our “needs” list includes: towels, Clorox, laundry detergent, paper towels, dry dog food and dry cat food. For more information, call 704.263.2444, send an email to TriCountyAnimalRescue@yahoo.com, visit us on the web at www.tcar.us or on FaceBook at Tri-County Animal Rescue. Donations can be sent to Tri-County Animal Rescue, PO Box 483, Alexis, NC 28006.

Pets and Storm Anxiety By Joann Hager There have been many storms lately with thunder and lightning which can be scary for some dogs/cats. To help keep them calm, here are a few tips to consider: Prepare the house. The house becomes your pets' safety zone, so it's important to prepare it properly. Keep some lights on. Keeping a light on will calm your pet and make him feel more secure, rather than being scared in a dark room. Dampen the noise. Close the curtains in the room and, if your animal is a caged one, cover up the cage in a thick blanket, but make sure it is breathable so your animal doesn't suffocate. This will also help to stop the flashes of light affecting your pet. Plan to use familiar sounds to drown out the noise of the storm. Music from a stereo or turning on the TV are likely familiar sounds that can sooth your pet. Just make sure not to play these sounds too loud. Prepare the room. Select a suitable room where you can contain the pet for the duration of the storm. An inner room that is least impacted by the noise is ideal. If you have more than one pet, be sure they don't mind being confined in the same room, or

select several rooms for different pets. Make the room cozy. Put down familiar, clean bedding somewhere pleasant such as under a table, on or behind a chair, etc. Add some familiar chew toys, scratch pads, balls, etc., to keep your pets amused and distracted. Prepare yourself. In the desire to ease our pet's pain, sometimes we can transfer our anxiety and upset to the pet. If you've prepared properly in advance, there is no need to feel upset and worried as you can be reassured about the safety of your pet. Provide food and hydration. Be sure to leave sufficient water and food for your pet in the confinement area. Many pets will be uneasy, or even frantic. If your pet has access to water, it will help calm him, and food supplied in your pet's regular portion will make him feel like it's a normal day. Keep an eye on your pet, and if possible, stay with her. Comfort her and talk to her. Be friendly but don't fuss over her too much; this can increase her anxiety if she picks up on yours and can reward and encourage fearful behavior. Allow your pet to hide somewhere in the room if wished. Check on your pet after the

storm. Reassure her once the storm is over. Let her have free run of the house to see how she behaves before considering letting her return outside (it might be best to wait until morning, if possible). Check for signs of stress in your pet: For cats, signs of stress include running away, soiling the house, hiding away and refusing to eat. For dogs, signs of stress

include barking a lot, running away, soiling the house, hiding and cowering, clinging to owners, whimpering, trembling and shaking, pacing and panting, and refusing to eat. If your pet is stressed, keep him indoors overnight. Keep a litter tray somewhere in the house, or walk a dog after the storm but don't let him off his harness and be sure to stay with him the whole time.

Meditations The Highway of Holiness I enjoy exploring hiking trails. I go online and find National Parks. I log it into my GPS and set out on the highway to my destination. Isaiah also speaks of a highway. “A highway will be there, a roadway, and it will be called the Highway of Holiness.” Isaiah 35:8a NASB. The highway leading to the mountains are beautiful and serene. But, it pales in comparison to the highway in Isaiah. The Israelites were in a desert place. They were discouraged and defeated. In the midst of their desert, God sent words of encouragement and strength. As a highway in the desert brings relief to travelers, so will God make a way through their circumstances. If they remained faithful, it would be the redeemed who will walk on this highway. Isaiah’s highway is the way to everlasting peace and joy. It is the way to God. We often refer to heaven as the streets paved with gold. I heard someone say, “When I get to the pearly gates, St. Peter will welcome me home.” Gold streets and pearly gates are not what makes heaven. Isaiah speaks of the

presence of God. It is in God’s presence we find the fullness of joy. How can we travel this Highway of Holiness? The GPS is ready. "Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life; Rev. Angela Pleasants no one comes to the District Father but through Superintendent Me.’” John 14:6 of Catawba Valley NASB. Again, in Methodist Churches Jesus words, we are confronted with the “way.” The way of holiness is the way of salvation through eternal life. This world will throw many things our way. But, the words of Christ is our hope. We can rest assured that a place is prepared and a highway is paved. There will be gladness and joy because sorrow and sighing will be no more.

Movies That make Me Cry By R. Dwayne Burks This afternoon our family watched the Megan Leavey movie. However, I may have to watch it again since I found myself crying almost from the first scene. I honestly could not understand why the tears flowed – in fact, they are flowing again as I write these words. Was it red-blooded American patriotism that overwhelmed my emotions? Was it the gripping story of the real-life hero and her equally heroic dog as they teamed up to discover bombs and save lives on the front lines of Iraq? Was I crying for my unofficial nephew, Ward Linder, who gave his last breath as an Army Specialist in Iraq almost ten years to the day we watched this movie that took viewers behind the lines of that often gory battlefield? Maybe I cried because the film reminded me of our family dog Pippy that we love dearly. Were the tears for my late father whose love for his country was exceeded only by his love for his family? I could not determine why I cried. Nevertheless the tears flowed throughout the entire film. But now the reason for my tears is becoming clear. I cried for our country. The movie stirred something within me that broke my heart. The bodies of thousands upon thousands of men, women, and yes, even service dogs have returned to America in flag-draped coffins. Others returned with injury-laden bodies and minds. So much has been given by so many - but for what? Did generations of heroes sacrifice so we can could scream at each other across our social media platforms? Is Arlington Cemetery filled with the remains of champions who would be thrilled should they return to America today? Would our right vs. left, you’re wrong and I’m right zero sum tone make them reconsider their sacrifices?

Would the way we play fast and loose with the truth, creating our own versions of news that placates personal biases and plays to our chosen base make them proud to see what America has permitted within our shores? Yes, I cried for my country. I cried not just for its foibles. I cried for its possibilities. America is still the shining city on a hill. It may be tarnished by politics, but it is still great. America doesn’t need to be made great again. It needs to remember the greatness that it is. The greatest country in the world was birthed when people joined together in shared passion, determined to set aside personal concerns in favor of what might be achieved together. Sacrifice. Courage. Collaboration. America was formed in the crucible of unity. Although no enemy from without can defeat America, we cannot withstand forever the partisan bickering and infighting that has become so familiar. A house divided against itself simply cannot stand. Yes, I weep for what our nation has become, and yet I weep with joy for what it is beneath the current mayhem. President Herbert Hoover stood before a depressed, almost broken America and reminded us that “Within the soul of America is freedom of mind and spirit. . . Here alone are the open windows through which pours the sunlight of the human spirit. Here alone is human dignity not a dream but an accomplishment. Perhaps it is not perfect, but it is more full in realization here than any other place in the world.” Today we can cry for our chosen petty preferences or we can choose to rise from our social media tirades, wipe the tears from our eyes and decide to live worthy of the blessings that have befallen this great land we call America.

Belmont production company to present play Following sell-out performances in South Carolina, 3M Productions is bringing the inspirational comedy stage play Tell Heaven I’m Coming to the L. Reeves McGlohon Auditorium at Stuart Cramer High School. Tell Heaven I’m Coming is the relatable story of two sisters and their mother. The mother has struggled to bring the sisters into adulthood. Now that they have lives of their own, the mother has developed dementia. Everything has changed overnight. The sisters must now decide and agree on the best source of help for their mother. Writer, Producer, and Director Harry McDowell drew from a personal experience with his grandmother for the spine of the play. The production was originally performed some 7 years ago. McDowell wanted to revisit and rewrite the play because of the current social awareness and conversations about dementia and care decisions surrounding it. He calls it a “powerful piece,” even “one of his strongest pieces so far.” He believes the social commentary is very strong regarding the loneliness and abandonment that many feel, as well as the hard decisions that many must make. According to McDowell, the play presents a “comedic, but factual” depiction of what it’s like for a loved one to have a debilitating con-

dition that becomes debilitating for everyone involved. People come to terms with their situations, make the best of them, and have some quality of life, including laughter. He knows that, for many, “the laughter is the medicine. For some, it’s all they have.” For Harry to hear an audience laugh, “that’s the reward.” In addition to an accomplished cast, Tell Heaven I’m Coming will include 3M Productions’ phenomenal Not Ready for Primetime Band, featuring Buff Dillard. The show will be hosted by the local radio personalities, Chirl Girl, Olympia D., and William Becton. The play will take place Saturday, August 19, 2017 at 4:00 PM (Doors open at 3:00 PM) at L. Reeves McGlohon Auditorium, Stuart Cramer High School, 101 Lakewood Road, Belmont.Tickets: $15.00 in advance $20.00 at the door. Local business leaders graduate from first Charlotte Aviation Academy For three decades, Lyerly Agency owners have partnered with Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) on a variety of communications projects. But it was not until this year’s inaugural class of the Charlotte Aviation Academy that they received such a unique perspective and education. The Academy – a program of the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce, supported by CLT and American Airlines – invited participants for a firsthand look at the airport’s innermost workings. Cramerton residents and Belmont business owners Elaine and Melia Lyerly (pictured) applied for the new program and were accepted among 15 total students, comprised of some Chamber Aviation Committee members, regional stakeholders and residential neighbors. From practical exercises to classroom instruction and field trips, students received in-depth monthly instruction that brought them behind the scenes with a goal of turning aviation interest into effective and qualified advocacy for CLT. They received an overview of CLT from Airport leadership; visited the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) Air Traffic Control Tower; explored the airfield to discuss future growth of the Terminal; toured nearby Wilson Air Center; learned about American Airline’s local operations, training center (including advanced flight simulators), employee training and maintenance hangar; and heard presentations from the USO, immigration and security experts who operate at CLT. “Going into the FAA Air Traffic Control Tower was a phenomenal experience,” said Melia Lyerly. “This Academy was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. We gained an incredible education beyond any layperson’s knowledge of the airport and its functions. This new understanding will not only help us professionally in our continued work with CLT, but brings a revitalized excitement for this economic engine and sharing it with others.” The inaugural Charlotte Aviation Academy class graduated on June 21 with an Aviation Symposium following six months of course work.

Goat Island Park, Cramerton has a new restroom facility. The new restrooms are 100% concrete. They were prefabricated in Georgia and brought to town on a flatbed tractor-trailer and set into place by a crane. The finishes on the bathroom were chosen to fit in with the town’s natural resources and to tie into the more passive and natural recreation direction the Town if trying to go. They are a natural cedar shake roof, board and batt upper and natural river rock lower and they fit in seamlessly in downtown Cramerton and add to the already beautiful aesthetics with the bridge, river, centennial center gazebo, etc. They are handicap accessible and are open to the public from 6am to 10pm at which time they lock for the night. It weighs approximately 55,000 pounds and with its concrete construction allows for easier maintenance and cleanup in the event of a flood in that area. The company that manufactured the restrooms is called CXT and they were part of a $100,000.00 grant from NC Recreation Trails that also included installation of two additional parking spaces for Goat Island on the Lakewood parking lot side. Carl Baber to be inducted into Mount Holly Sports Hall of Fame By Kathy Blake Some men, loyal to extremes, support their cause and alma mater regardless, even if it means surgical proof that they truly bleed Carolina blue. Carl Baber, 83, of Mount Holly, is known as the man who built Gaston County ballparks – fancy ballparks, with lights, concession stands and fences, so children could have finery when they played. He got partners, land and financial donations with commas after the dollar signs, but when it came to a personal medical ordeal, Baber landed in a dilemma. In the late 1980s, Baber had open heart surgery. A UNC-Chapel Hill graduate with a degree in Parks and Recreation Administration and a few master’s courses to his credit, Baber felt entitled to a surgeon from Carolina. He got one from Wake Forest. “He let me know that’s where he was getting paid. He said, ‘When you’re in the hospital in this kind of shape, you’re going to have to take anybody,’” Baber says. The surgery was successful, until Baber peeked at his chest the next day. The surgeon, using orange Mercurochrome, had signed his work with a big ‘WF.’ “I’ve had open heart surgery twice,” Baber says. “The second time, I got to choose a guy from Carolina.” That brand of persistence made Baber a staple in Gaston sports and put him in the Mount Holly Sports Hall of Fame to honor a career that created approximately 50

athletic fields, parks, a few tennis courts and had the fishing hole at Poston Park in Gastonia named Carl Baber, Jr. Lake, marked with a green and tan sign. His loyalty toward his 26-year task as Gaston County’s director of parks and recreation played out in his devotion to children and his partnerships with county leaders and donors. “I knew how to do it, and if I had the right partners, we could accomplish something,” he says. “So, throughout the county, you have these matching grant programs. It was good PR for the county commissioners also, getting the match and getting something nice. The biggest thing to me was, I didn’t do all this stuff by myself. I always had partners.” Baber’s parks profession, in reality, was Plan B. He started at the University of North Carolina as a pharmacy major. “That’s what my family wanted me to do. My uncle was a druggist and had drugstores,” he says, “but Carolina had a quarters system, so we had Saturday classes and there would be 60,000 people going to Kenan Stadium and I’d be in there trying to make aspirin tablets. So I changed my major.” Baber played baseball four years at Mount Airy High School, then joined the military before getting his degree and becoming assistant director of parks and recreation in Mooresville (“It’s a town the university liked to use to train people,” he says. “A lot of parks directors throughout the state start

in Mooresville.”) He came to Gaston County in the fall of 1973. “Of course, not having any staff or money or land, it had to be creative to get going. So I thought, the first thing we needed to do was have a master plan,” he says, “and the first thing I did was ask for 100 acres in Dallas. And that’s now known as Dallas Park. “Another thing we needed to do was form a park grading crew, because the county owned a lot of equipment like bulldozers and so forth, and we’d take the machines out and use them for grading.” Longtime friend Aaron Goforth, a 2016 Hall of Fame Community Spirit Award recipient, remembers Baber’s persistence. “None of the baseball fields in Gaston County would have been built, if not for him,” Goforth says. “He did parks all over the county.” Goforth cites the $10,000 raised for a concession stand at Mount Holly Middle School, which was doubled by a matching grant, and the $50,000 in matching funds for Costner Field facilities. Lights went up, the school had a new place, and Babe Ruth teams were invited to play there, too. “And when we needed a new gym, the school system didn’t have the money, but somehow or

Carl Baber other, he did a deal with the county commissioners, and they did it,” Goforth says. Baber’s work can be seen at places such as Bessemer Middle School – “probably the only middle school in the state with four lighted athletic fields,” he says – and

East Gaston High School’s baseball and softball fields, concession stand and press box, as well as its tennis courts. “They (East Gaston) had 2 x 4s for a foul line. And we fenced it, lighted it, and put the softball field right next to it. And we did most of that with the Stanley American Legion, and that made it good for the high school and the community,” Baber says. His work ventured into soccer, resulting in the Gaston United Soccer Club. “You know, soccer didn’t come into Gaston County until the mid-1980s, and we didn’t have the staff and we had to get a partner, and that’s when Gaston United was formed (in 1992),” he says. “We furnished the field, and they ran the program.” Throughout his career, Baber found few obstacles to stop his mission. Even nature couldn’t halt his progress. “At Hunter Huss,” he says, “the school board had

After School, kids discover their potential at the YMCA A new school year is filled with potential—a chance to start new routines and habits, build new friendships and discover new possibilities and interests. It’s an exciting time for many kids, however—at the end of the school day, 11.3 million kids head to homes where they are unsupervised form 3 to 6 p.m. according to Afterschool Alliance, a nonprofit public awareness organization. As children transition from summer to fall, the Gaston County Family YMCA is offering programs to school-aged children throughout Gaston County to keep youth active, busy and engaged during out-of-school time. Through a well-rounded approach to youth development, the Y’s program offers activities in a caring and safe environment during the critical hours after school. Whether through sports, mentorship, or academic support, the Y nurture the potential of youth throughout the school year. “One in five children do not have someone to care for them after school, an essential time to help increase children’s success in school,” said Andrew Campbell, Youth and Family Director, Central YMCA. “Afterschool at the Y is an opportunity for families to ensure their kids are receiving additional support, continued learning and a chance to participate in meaningful activities that can

inspire children’s motivations and abilities to succeed.” This school year the YMCA is serving 37 schools in Gaston County. This includes 7 new schools – Grier, Hawk’s Nest, Linderfeldt, Pleasant Ridge, Sadler, St. Michael Catholic School, and Webb Street School. In the Y’s afterschool program youth receive homework help, healthy snack and active play. Financial assistance is available to those in need, to ensure every child and teen has the opportunity to learn and grow at the Y. The Y employs Healthy Eating and Physical Activity (HEPA) standards in our afterschool programs that help build a healthier future for our nation’s children by encouraging healthy eating habits, limiting screen time and providing physical activity to keep every child healthy. Specifically, we serve veggie or fruit and grain with every snack and have trained our staff as in the HEPA standards so they can role model healthy behaviors to the kids. For more information about the Gaston County Family YMCA’s afterschool program, please contact Andrew Campbell, acampbell@gastonymca.org or visit gastonymca.org today.

a big renovation project, and we graded the land and got enough land to have a high school baseball field. But we had to re-route a creek in order to do that. Just kind of helped it move along.” He says his MHSHOF induction is “humbling”. “It’s appreciated by me and my family. I’m just pleased they’d think of me and want me in there,” he says. “Sometimes, baseball is what kept kids in school, and then they’d go on to college and get an education, and you feel good to have had a part in that, in making their lives better. So, it means a lot to be recognized where I live, by people I know.” The 11th annual Mount Holly Sports Hall of Fame banquet will take place on Saturday, August 19 at 6pm in the Mount Holly Municipal Complex. Tickets are $20 and are available at Charlie’s Drug Store and from committee members.

Local high school students design summer shows by Diana Mansfield Summertime may be known as a break for students, but for the Design Team of Encore Theatre Company Youth Guild, it is an opportunity to highlight hard work and creativity. Encore Theatre Company, or ETC, is an all-youth group of actors in and around Gaston County. Created by Leslie Hodnett, ETC performs two productions—one play, directed by Jill Bloede, and one musical, directed by Hodnett—during the summer at the Haid Theatre of Belmont Abbey. Inviting young adults ages 13 to 21 the chance to display their talent, ETC provides both fun and instruction. Before rehearsals even start, there are students hard at work designing costumes, makeup, wigs, lighting, props, and sets for the shows. This summer’s line-up brought Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream to the stage last weekend, and the Dr. Seuss inspired Seussical the Musical August 3-5. “The collaboration between all parts of the theatre; being able to communicate easily with wig, lighting, makeup and set designs makes it easier to make sure that everything fits together and keeps us connected,” says Kiera Moten, 14, the youngest design team member. She also has roles in both productions: Moth in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Thing 1 in Seussical. Moten, along with older sister Bianca, 17, share the creative task of costume design and construction for the two shows. “Through working on the design team, I hope to help present a summer of shows that are not only full of talent, but visually beautiful,” says Bi-

anca Moten. “We have such a talented and creative group of people working together this summer, and I hope everyone sees that.” The older Moten sister is in both ETC productions as Hermia in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and the Sour Kangaroo in Seussical. Apartments, townhomes planned for former mill site in Belmont Rising from the remains of a mill that employed Belmont residents for 80 years, a new riverfront community of 70 townhomes and 102 apartments called Aberfoyle Village won approval July 3 from the Belmont City Council. The project was approved by a vote of 3 to 2. Doug Gadd was not present. Ryan Schrift and Ron Foulk voted in favor of the project, while Richard Turner and Martha Stowe voted against. Mayor Charlie Martin broke the tie by voting for the project. The path to approval took three community meetings, two planning board hearings and multiple plan revisions before coming to the City Council for a decision. The 11acre site bordering the Catawba River is off East Catawba Street between the city’s Kevin Loftin Riverfront Park and the new Riverside Marina. The Aberfoyle Mill was

demolished more than 10 years ago, and the only remaining link to the past is a small brick building that will be preserved and used as a sales office for the new development. The plan calls for respecting the industrial heritage of the site by designing three brick apartment buildings with large windows in the style of a mill. The three-story apartment buildings will be surrounded by town homes also designed to complement the style. Chamber members involved in the project include Coldwell Banker Commercial MECA, representing the property owner, and Brookline Homes, which will build the townhomes.

This artist rendering of Aberfoyle Village shows how the design will reflect the style of the textile mill that operated on the site for more than 80 years. Montcross Chamber photo

In collaboration with Tech Talent South and TechWorks, Gaston College is offering a course on the fundamentals of creating web sites. Through the 8-week course, Basics of Website Development: Programming and Coding Skills, students will gain tech experience to become proficient with web development frameworks and applications, coding, design, databases, API integrations, server-side languages, software and more. They will master essential techniques on how to be front-line developers and build their own websites. Course training will be provided by Tech Talent South (TTS), a Charlotte-based coding boot camp dedicated to fostering talent in technology. Working with Gaston College, Tech Talent South designed the Basics of Website Development course by incorporating elements from some of the courses it offers at its 11 campuses throughout the Southeast. No prior coding experience is required to take the course, although having some relevant training may be helpful. Computers will be provided for use during the class or students may bring their own laptop computers, if they prefer. All of the software and the textbooks used in the course are included in the course fee of $2,790. TechWorks of Gaston County is partnering with Gaston College to offer full scholarships for the course. Basics of Website Development is the first of a series of 8-week courses offered by Gaston College. Other courses will include Mobile Applications Development (Including Android and iOS) and Cyber Security. Students in the Basics of Website Development course will develop the skills to design high-quality websites and will build a web development portfolio. They will benefit from hands-on training and the rigorous coursework, mentoring, and support provided by industry professionals in an atmosphere that will be enjoyable and inspiring. The Basics of Website Development course meets at the Gaston College Kimbrell Campus in Belmont on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 9 p.m., from Tuesday, August 22, to Thursday, October 12. For information about the Basics in Website Development: Programming and Coding Skills course and about applying for scholarship assistance, or to register for the course, call Gaston College Job and Career Advancement at 704-922-6250.
