MICS grad Bella Coble has overcome astounding odds to succeed By Alan Hodge alan.bannernews@gmail.com

It's over 5,000 miles from the Ukraine to North Carolina but for Mt. Island Charter School graduate Bella Coble that distance represents a divide from one life to another. Coble, who is 20-years-old, will receive her diploma on June 9- a little later in age than most of her fellow students, but considering what she's been through in life, a miracle of sorts. Back in the Ukraine- her “previous life”Bella saw her mother, father, and three brothers all pass away. She ended up living in an orphanage for seven years. Then something good happened. Here's how Bella's new mom, Debbie Coble, explained the serendipity that came into the situation. “Bella first came to us through a nonprofit organization called New Horizons for Children,” she said. “The organization pairs orphans in countries like Ukraine and Latvia with American families willing to host them for four weeks either during Christmas or during the summer. My husband Bill and I MICS grad Bella Coble is a native of the Ukraine decided to participate in the hosting program and says she glad to be in the U.S.A.! Photo by Alan Hodge See COBLE page 8

Stuart Cramer High graduate Bailey Patterson has a song in her heart By Alan Hodge alan.bannernews@gmail.com

Being in front of an audience is familiar territory for Stuart Cramer High graduating senior Bailey Patterson, so when she walks across the stage to receive her diploma on June 10 the only thing missing will be a song and dance from her. A bundle of energy and talent, Patterson has made many marks on Cramer during her four years there, not the least of which are her powerful performances in the magnificent musicals students perform under the direction of theater director Chuck Stowe. “Bailey Patterson is a delight to work with on stage,” said Stowe. “She has such a gentle and giving personality, it was fun watching her create several of our onstage villains over the years. Bailey is creative and hard working--and both traits will serve her well. She has been an asset to our theatre arts program. We will miss her, and wish her the best!” Music has long been a part of Patterson's Bailey Patterson had a great time performing on persona. the stage during her four years at Stuart Cramer “I was in middle school band and joined High. South Point’s Max Mead performs to the max By Alan Hodge alan.bannernews@gmail.com

You might say that East Gaston High graduating senior Lindsey Blackwell is about as multi-talented as a person can be. Not only does she make a big splash on the volleyball court, she is also a math whiz and pulls out her creative side as a member of the yearbook staff. Blackwell, a native of Mt. Holly, has been very involved with a variety of activities while at East Gaston. “I was a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Interact Club and Student Council,” she said. “I was on the volleyball team for four years and captain of the sophomore, junior, and senior teams.” Like all her involvements, volleyball is something Blackwell puts her all into, “It's a fast paced game that's not just physical,” she said. “It takes a lot of strategy and teamwork.” Working the other side of her brain, Blackwell also embraces mathematics. “I've always loved math,” she said. “Growing up I always had good math teach- East Gaston graduate Lindsey Blackwell is ers and that inspired me.” multi-talented and contributed greatly to the school yearbook. South Point High senior Max Mead will be on familiar ground when he walks across the Lineberger Stadium field to receive his diploma June 10. That's because he tore the turf up there for three stellar seasons as a Red Raider football standout. A native of Fredericksburg, Va., Mead came to South Point and immediately plunged into school activities. “I felt welcomed right away at South Point,” Mead said. “That helped me thrive here.” While on the gridiron Mead played an astonishing number of positions, including safety, punter, kick off return, punt return, and backup quarterback. He excelled at each one. He was one of the leaders on last season's State Championship winning teaman experience that impacted him greatly. “I have so many memories of my teammates and the games we played,” he said .”It was a special experience beating Rocky Mount and taking the trophy.” Retired South Point head football coach Mickey Lineberger praised Mead. South Point High football standout Max Mead “Max is an outstanding young man,” will also be hitting the gridiron at Davidson College in the fall. Photo by Alan Hodge See MEAD page 8

Elements of Empowerment, Inc. announces Belmont Juneteenth Celebration “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” - African Proverb Elements of Empowerment, Inc., one of Gaston County’s newest non-profit organizations, is practicing that proverb by establishing and continuing partnerships for the Belmont Juneteenth Celebration. Since renewing and strengthening support from the City of Belmont earlier this year, Elements of Empowerment, Inc. has sought and secured additional sponsors and entertainment for the upcoming celebration. Juneteeth is set for Saturday, June 17 from 2-9:30pm at Stowe Park in downtown Belmont. Rain date is June 24. Carolina’s Healthcare System will have an impactful presence in Stowe Park on the event day. Their Health Village will include a variety of services and information. WSGE 91.7 FM joins the event as media aponsor and the exclusive radio partner for the celebration. New entertainment also comes to Juneteenth year. Tyrone Jefferson and “A Sign of the Times” (pictured) will take the stage to perform the finale concert. The non-profit music organization and ensemble, whose mission is to preserve the legacy of the African Diaspora through music, dance and the spoken word, will perform an array of music. Returning to the celebration are: four-time performer, guitarist James “Tootie” Hogan; two-time African Drum Circle leader, Kojo Bey of Drums 4 Life; and cultural face painter/artist Catherine Courtlandt McElvane. Familiar vendors, family-friendly activities, and cultural cuisine will again be part of the day. Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States, specifically the June 19, 1865 announcement in Galveston, Texas. The Belmont Juneteenth Celebration, the only such event in Gaston County, is a festival with an emphasis on music, art, and culture.Visitors from surrounding counties are welcome. Event spaces and sponsor opportunities are still available. Interested par-

Gaston Museum gets new director The Gaston Museum has a new director, Doug Brown, a museum professional with over 26 years in the field with various governmental agencies and museums. Brown first started his career out with the National Park Service where he was part of the team that created Friendship Hill National Historic Site. While he had offers simultaneously from the State of Ohio to be the state director of historic sites and to serve as director at the Gaston County Museum of Art & History, Brown saw the greatest potential in leading a smaller museum through the AAM-Re-Accreditation process and developing community based needs programming as a higher calling than managing 59 historic sites. And he’s excited at the thought of guiding the museum through major changes and fundraising within the next 3 years. Already ripples signaling the undercurrent of change can be seen as the Museum partners with other organizations both within the county, such as the Township of Dallas, the department of Travel and Tourism and the Alfred C. Kessell History Center at Loray Mill, and on the national level. PBS, the public broadcasting service based out of Arlington, VA, has called on the Museum professionally before and will be again this summer. The relationship with Gaston County Schools has grown exponentially as well, particularly with the development of a new STEAM program that met with overwhelming success and feedback from the teachers and students. The program, designed to meet the learning approach of combining Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math into a fully integrated experience, was funded through a grant from the Community Foundation of Gaston County and enabled students from five under-served schools in the county to attend at no cost. In the coming year, more visible changes with be made. Structural changes to the Museum campus and gallery spaces are in the research and planning phases, including plans to open up the historic county jail for tours. The museum just hired an architect to develop a historic restoration plan for the jail for additional exhibition space.

Beware of ticks By Joann Hager Ticks are really bad this year. I have already pulled two ticks off myself and several off my husband who works in the yard a lot. There are ways to safely remove a tick. So, you’ve found a tick on your pet or you—how do you deal with it? While it’s important to get these little suckers off quickly, veterinarians advise that you stay calm and don’t rush it. Moving too fast when removing a tick could potentially create more problems, both for you and your pet. While the following instructions employ tweezers, be aware that there are some very good products on the market designed specifically for safe tick removal. If you live in a tick-heavy area or are taking your pets to a place where they are likely to get ticks, it’s a good idea to buy one of these tools and have it on hand. They generally work better than tweezers at getting out the whole tick, and are relatively inexpensive. Step 1—Prepare its Final

Resting Place Throwing a tick in the trash or flushing it down the toilet will not kill it. The best option is a screw-top jar containing some rubbing alcohol. Step 2—Don’t Bare-Hand It Put on latex or rubber gloves so you’ll never have direct contact with the tick or your pet’s bite area. Ticks can carry infective agents that may enter your bloodstream through breaks in your skin or through your eyes, nostrils or mouth. Step 3—Grab a Partner You don’t want your pet squirming away before you’re finished, so if possible, have a helper on hand to distract, soothe or hold her still. Step 4—The Removal Treat the bite area with rubbing alcohol and, using a pair of tweezers, grasp the tick as close to the animal’s skin as possible. Pull straight upwards with steady, even pressure. Place the tick in your jar. · Do not twist or jerk the tick! This may leave the mouth-parts embedded in your pet, or cause the tick to

Mon., June 12

regurgitate infective fluids. · Do not squeeze or crush the body of the tick, because its fluids (saliva and gut contents) may contain infective organisms. Step 5—All that Remains Sometimes, in spite of doing everything right, a tick’s mouth-parts will get left behind in your pet’s skin. If the area doesn't appear red or inflamed, the best thing to do is to disinfect it and not to try to take the mouth-parts out. A warm compress to the area might help the body expel them, but do not go at it with tweezers. Step 6—Clean Up Thoroughly disinfect the bite site and wash your hands with soap and water (even though you were wearing gloves). Sterilize your tweezers with alcohol or by carefully running them over a flame. Step 7—Keep Watch Over the next few weeks, closely monitor the bite area for any signs of localized infection. If the area is already red and inflamed, or becomes so later, please bring your pet to your veterinarian for evaluation.

Tri-County Animal Rescue Pet of the Week

Community Foundation hosts event CThe Community Foundation of Gaston County hosted a Continuing Education Event on Wednesday, May 10th for Professional Advisors at Gaston Country Club. The Foundation offers continuing education annually to attorneys, CPAs and financial advisors and applies for approval for the one hour credit to both the NC State Bar Board of Continuing Legal Education for attorneys and Prometric for Insurance Providers. “Professional Advisors are a key resource for our community in communicating giving vehicles and structuring planned gifts. Jonathan Magan, Senior Vice President, Sales Executive Manager Commercial of Wells Fargo Insurance was the featured speaker. The program topic was Cyber Liability. Tri-County Animal Rescue Pet of the Week is this little Wire Haired Jack Russell Terrier mixed named Just Jack (JJ). He is 2 years old and weighs 15 pounds. JJ is good with everyone including other pets. He has longer wiry hair but does not require professional grooming…bath and brush is all that is needed. JJ is very playful so another dog companion would be a plus. He is an inside/outside dog. JJ is neutered, current on vaccines, heartworm negative and microchipped. He will be looking for you this weekend! This bright, clever, athletic breed is on top of everything that's going on in his environment. Nothing gets by him. A solitary or sedate lifestyle is not suited to a Jack Russell Terrier. He requires full participation in the family and vigorous daily play sessions, especially ball chasing, which he tends to be passionate about – even obsessive. Too little exercise, too little companionship, and too little mental stimulation will quickly lead to boredom, which will in turn lead to destructive behaviors. JRTs are not apartment dogs! Most Jack Russell Terriers are happy-golucky and friendly with strangers, but in the presence of strange dogs, keep them close and under control. If the other dog minds its own manners, the Jack Russell will usually adhere to a "live and let live" philosophy. Please come out to our adoption event this weekend. If you are looking for an addition

to your family, please come out and meet our pets this weekend. We have many available pets at the Gastonia PetSmart located at 3698 East Franklin Boulevard this Friday from 6-9 pm and Saturday noon to 6 pm. Tri-County Animal Rescue is a non-profit organization serving Lincoln, Gaston and other surrounding counties. We are committed to ending pet homelessness in this area and we need your continued support. If you cannot adopt a pet, then support Tri-County in other ways. We need volunteers and donations to continue our mission of finding homes for these unwanted animals. Please help Tri-County Animal Rescue continue to save pets by adopting your next pet this weekend? Our “needs” list includes: towels, Clorox, laundry detergent, paper towels, dry dog food and dry cat food. For more information, call 704.263.2444, send an email to TriCountyAnimalRescue@ yahoo.com, visit us on the web at www. tcar.us or on FaceBook at Tri-County Animal Rescue. Local CAP members work air show Sixteen members of the Gastonia Civil Air Patrol Composite Squadron recently made the five hour trip to Seymour Johnson Air Force Base to join other North Carolina Civil Air Patrol members in assisting Air Force personnel with operations at the base’s biennial air show known as Wings Over Wayne. From May 19th through May 21st both cadets and senior members helped with parking handicapped visitors, loading and unloading shuttle buses and distributing identification arm bands for children. The two day military air show, which is held every other year at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, was attended by a record 230,000 spectators. This year's show kicked off the 75th anniversary celebration of the 4th Fighter Wing. Headlining the show was the US Navy Blue Angels aerial demonstration team. Crowds were also treated to flight performances by the F-22 Raptor Demonstration Team, the US Army Special Forces Black Daggers Parachute Demonstration Team, the Royal Canadian Air Force CF-18 Demonstration Team, and a 4th Fighter Wing 75th anniversary historical review flight featuring the P-51D Mustang, the F-86 Sabre, and the F-15E Strike Eagle. Additionally, more than 35 aircraft were on static display. Civil Air Patrol members staffing the event were invited to the pre-show hangar party on Friday evening. There they were able to meet the pilots who would be flying the demonstrations, including the Blue Angels, as well as their crew members. “What an incredible opportunity for these teenagers to meet and talk shop with the men and women they admire and in whose steps they may one day follow” said Lt. Sue Beutler, Gastonia’s Public Affairs Officer. As a Total Force partner and Auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, Civil Air Patrol plays an important role in assisting with functions such as this, as well as emergency service missions when needed.

Girl Scouts bestow awards Girl Scouts Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont (GSCP2P) is proud to announce it had 102 girls from across 40 counties receive the honor of Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouting, during the 2016-2017 troop year. The Girl Scout Gold Award, which started in 1916 as the Golden Eaglet, has always been about girls improving the community around them, sharing their ideas and passions to leave a lasting mark to make the world a better place. Today, girls who earn the Girl Scout Gold Award show their true commitment, leadership ability, time management, dedication and initiative by completing a minimum of 80 hours toward a service project in their community that is sustainable for years to come. This year, the 102 Gold Award recipients collectively contributed a minimum of

8,160 hours, which the council credits with a monetary value of $187,598.40 based on the 2016 Independent Sector’s estimated value of volunteer time at $22.99 per hour for North Carolina. “In Girl Scouts, service to others has always been a core focus. These girls saw a need in their community and took action to make a difference. Their ambition, dedication and follow-through on these projects will make a lasting impact on a personal, community, state and in some cases national and international level,” said Lane Cook, CEO of GSCP2P. The various Gold Award projects benefit all ages, as well as a variety of populations including churches, schools and local organizations and companies. Projects from this year include one girl who wrote a how-to book on navigating middle school; one girl who constructed a community garden that was

handicap-accessible; one girl who worked to raise awareness and provide screenings for Type 1 diabetes in Guatemala; and one girl partnered with the Red Cross to collect items for children who have lost their homes in natural disasters. Along with the prestige of earning the Girl Scout Gold Award, it also sets girls apart in the college admissions process, helps them earn college scholarships and even promotes them in ranking when entering the military. The life skills and vision girls receive when earning the Girl Scout Gold Award stay with them for a lifetime. Local Girl Scouts who received the Gold Award included: Mackenzie Harris, Ashley Jamison, and Lindsey Johnson, all of Belmont.

Our Great Commission Rev. Trent Rankin Salvation Church, Gastonia, NC salvationchurchnc.org After the resurrection of Jesus Christ on that first Easter Sunday morning, Jesus remained on the earth for about forty days. During this time He made appearances to His disciples and other followers. At the conclusion of this period of time, Jesus led His disciples to the Mount of Olives, where He gave them one final command, or commission, before He returned to heaven. We call this the Great Commission. Matthew, Mark, and Luke each record this commission, as does Acts. In Acts 1:8 Jesus tells His disciples, “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth” (NKJV). In this verse Jesus commands His disciples to go into their city, their surrounding area, even places that are uncomfortable, and to the world. As we see this event that occurred so long ago, what significance does it have for us today? What does the Great Commission mean for us? Today we are called just as the disciples, to witness to all people of the love of Jesus Christ. We are called to go to our Jerusalem, the places we know. We are also to go to our Judea, as we are to spread our witness beyond the areas we know. Also, we are called

to our Samaria. In Jesus’ day, most Jewish people would avoid Samaria, as they did not like Samaritans, or their religious views. Jews of the first century would travel out of their way to avoid the city. Jesus commanded His disciples to go to Samaria, an area uncomfortable to them, with people unlike themselves. We must go to our Samaria, places uncomfortable to us. We must leave our comfort zones, and go to places where people are, who are not like us. People different from us, yet still in need of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Finally, Jesus told His disciples to go to the world. They spread the gospel throughout their known world. We may never travel outside our city, county, or state, yet we can witness for Jesus Christ wherever we are. We can be missionaries in our own areas. As we look around our cities, states, and even our nation and world, we see many people lost without hope. Jesus has commissioned us to spread the good news. Someone loved us enough to tell us about the love of Jesus Christ. Do we love others enough to tell them of Jesus? In the midst of a world so desperate for hope, may we give that hope to day, the hope of Jesus Christ. As Jesus said to His disciples so long ago, and says to us today, go!

Meditations Use your voice wisely Often when asked who you are, we resort to telling people what we do. We respond, “I am a teacher, a pastor, or a truck driver.” But, does this define who we are? The Pharisees approached John the Baptist and demanded, “Tell us who you are!” John did not claim to be a priest, the prophet or Messiah. John said, “I am a voice.” What does it mean to be a voice? We don’t hear much about John the Baptist. By the time he comes on the scene, he is already grown and dwelling in the Judean wilderness. So, what brought the people from the comfort of their homes and their places of worship to a desolate place to hear a strangely dressed man crying out? The people were hopeful. They knew something greater was to come and John’s message fulfilled that hope. His message focused on the age of the Kingdom of God has finally come. John used his voice to preach a message that ignited a fire in the hearts of those who heard. John’s message also rattled the religious elite, yet in his humility, he saw himself as nothing more than a voice

“What’s Your Color?” Why do we do the things we do; lean toward certain inclinations; decide choices like the clothes we want to wear one day versus another, the food to eat that day, or the landscape flowers and trees we plant around our homes? Are these decisions random or is there more going on subconsciously in our lives than we may imagine? My wife loves red and white; and black. I love a huge mixture of colors but I guess, if I look in my closet, I lean toward earthtones, blues, and greens with splashes of yellow, orange, pink and white too, as long as it accents livelier colors. Don’t you imagine there may be more going on within our personalities than we can fathom; more elements God has hidden to help form us; energize and fulfill us? Since it’s not so openly obvious maybe we find out through a process of discovery, education, prayer and experiments; but danger lurks, doesn’t it? The devil is and will be very busy, trying to turn us off course. I prefer calm sounding music but last weekend I was working on a fire damaged home repair project and a neighbor was blaring music that turned my spirit upside down. I couldn’t wait to get back home and decontaminate myself; bring myself back to my emotional and spiritual center. Yesterday was destined to be busy with a lot of details, driving and questions to be answered. I wore earth-tones. The colors I wore are supposedly associated with stability, and endurance. My day ended well so those colors apparently worked in my favor. Today I chose blue; earth-tones just didn’t seem right. I’d already

made my “to-do” list for the day and blue highlighted wisdom, faith, and calmness. I’m glad I subconsciously chose blue because that fits my list perfectly today. When I consider my wife’s favorite colors in landscaping and clothing, her colors denote energy, strength, and power; courage and passion too. Dennis Siracusa The black she loves brings perspective and depth and white certainly highlights her desire to surround her family with goodness. In Matthew 5:5 the scripture says “blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.” I wrestled with that one for years until I delved into the Semitic origins of “meek.” Meekness doesn’t mean a person is a milquetoast personality! Meekness in scripture means “power under control.” That scripture describes my wife to a T and is why I rely on her, value her, love her and listen to her. As we go about our lives, don’t we desire to look back and see value in our efforts and choices? In 2 Timothy 4:7, Paul told Timothy, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” Paul was not just referring to a day but a lifetime of choices. Christ Followers are here to serve God. Our right choices start and finish with Him. It’s vital that we understand that and make Our Lord our constant priority. When we do, both our color choices, and God will be working for our good.

through which God spoke to the nation. How do you use your voice? What message are Rev. Angela Pleasants you sharing with District the world? The Superintendent Kingdom of God of Catawba Valley has come in the Methodist Churches arrival of Jesus, but the full manifestation has not yet arrived. Like John, we too have a message to proclaim. “Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.” II Corinthians 5:20 ESV. An ambassador is sent as a representative on behalf of another. We are sent to act and speak on behalf of God. John the Baptist used his voice to point others to Jesus Christ. So, let us also use our voice to point others to Jesus. So, when someone asks, “who are you?” Instead of saying what you do respond, “I am a voice.” What a great way to begin sharing your faith story and the love of Christ.

Alexander Memorial Baptist VBS Alexander Memorial Baptist Church, 208 S. Main, Belmont, will be having its Vacation Bible School June 21-23 from 6:30-8:30pm. All children age 3-teens are invited. Dinner will be served. There is no cost.

For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us. –Romans 8:18

PATTERSON from page 1 the chorus at Stuart Cramer as a freshman,” Patterson said. “I like performing and being on the stage.” Patterson's creative credits are long. Stuart Cramer productions she's taken part in includes “13”, “Hairspray”, and “Dracula” to name a few. Other artistic activities she can claim includes taking part in the Cramerton Centennial square dance show, singing in the awards ceremony for Stuart Cramer teachers, being in the NC Honors Chorus and All-County Chorus, and singing in the statewide NC Music Educator's Assoc. event last

November. “That was big,” Bailey said. Music and theater have been an important segment of Patterson's schooling, but she also has other outlets for her enthusiasm. She's president of her senior class and ranked number three academically. She's been Interact Club president for three years, president of the SC chapter National Honor Society, she a leader of the FCA and Bible clubs, and a member of the swim team to name just a few of her many merits. She attends The Pointe Church with her parents Chris and Robbie Patterson. After graduation, Bailey plans to attend UNC-Chapel Hill and major in biology with

a pre-med concentration. She will minor in global studies. “I want to be a surgeon,” she says. So, what drives Patterson to do so much so well? “My parents have always urged me to excel,” she said. “I am very dedicated and know it takes hours of study to succeed.” Though her own future is bright, Patterson has some sage advice for her younger fellow students as they move through the educational system and life in general. “Make sure you take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way,” she says. “If you can do it, then you should do it.”

from page 1 Lindsey plans to attend Coastal Carolina in the fall for Math Education. Her hope is to come back to Gaston County to teach math to high school students. She is the recipient of the Coastal Carolina Provost Scholar Award. Her role on the East Gaston yearbook staff has allowed Blackwell to combine her math skills with talent as a photographer. “I really like taking pictures for the yearbook at all types of school events,” she said. Blackwell's yearbook adviser, social studies teacher Hannah Hefner, had these remarks about Lindsey's work on the publication.

“Last year about this time, I approached Lindsey, whom I have known her whole life, and I said, 'How do you feel about being my business editor next year?',” Hefner said. “She had applied for yearbook, like most do, hoping to be on a staff of equally enthusiastic students wanting to make their mark on the school year. Little did she know that she would get to play such a large role. Needless to say, I could not have made it without her this year. Lindsey's job as the business editor was two-fold. First, she was the primary student in charge of contacting businesses to ask for their monetary support in return for an advertisement placed in our book. Her second role was

to enter all in-school yearbook sales. Business editor is usually the "dreaded" editor position each school year. Lindsey loved this role, and it showed. She is organized and thorough, which I truly appreciate about her.” During her four years at East Gaston, Blackwell made a lot of friends and memories. “What I remember most is all the relationships I made with staff and my fellow students,” she said. “East Gaston is like one big family.” Blackwell's advice to her rising classmates reflects her strong personality and adventurous spirit. “Stay true to who you are,” she said. “Step out of your comfort zone. Good things will come from there.”

all fell in love with her and she with us. We celebrated her 15th birthday during her time with us and, yes, she got lots and lots of presents! At the end of our hosting period she had to leave to go back to Ukraine and it was the hardest day ever. There were lots of tears! After she left, the translators/chaperones were able to tell her that we wanted to pursue adoption. We were not allowed to say anything about it to her during our time together because they were trying to protect the kids from disappointment. Things do go wrong sometimes. Immediately thereafter we started the adoption process. We were scheduled to travel to Ukraine during the summer for three weeks. I will never forget seeing her again for the first time. Again, lots of tears (happy tears this time). We brought her home on August 7, 2012. She spent her first year just learning English and then started school at MICS for her 9th grade year. Now, in her senior year she is making an A in Honors English! People like to say that we were such a blessing to her, how good it was of us to adopt a teenager, etc., but we always tell them that SHE is the blessing to our family!” Bella reflected on what life is like in the Ukraine compared to the U.S. “There is no future in Ukraine,” she says. “There is too much trash on the ground and it is dirty and smelly. There are weeds everywhere.” Then there's the other side of the coin. “Here in U.S. it is clean,” Bella said. “The nature

is nice and the people are friendly. I love the beach and mountains.” Bella is glad to be at MICS- a far cry from the school at the orphanage. “At the orphanage, school was very structured with lots of rules, but here is more independent and free,” she said. Bella says her favorite course at MICS is art. She excels at English- amazing considering the fact she taught herself the language using Rosetta stone tapes. "I have good teachers and try to do my best even if I have to stay after school,” she said. After graduation, Bella plans to attend CPCC then transfer to Appalachian State. “I am thinking interior design or dental hygienist,” she says of a career path. Bella has made a huge impact everyone who knows her. Here's what Mary Smith, MICS student events, fundraising, and community outreach coordinator said. “After working in the field of education for over 16 years, I’ve met thousands of students. Bella Coble is one of those students who stands out. It’s impossible to meet her and not immediately notice her kindness, grace, and gentle spirit. This matched with her unwavering commitment to achieving her goals will guide her to many successes in life.” As far as the past, present and future of her life, Bella's faith had seen her through. “God will help you through challenges,” she says. “He knows the way.”

vidson College in the fall and playing on the football team. He will also be in the ROTC program. “I decided on Davidson because the school has a great coaching staff, great teachers, and I can get a great education there,” Mead said. “The ROTC program is a good opportunity to get a free education and also grow as a person.” Mead comes by his love of the military naturally, His

father, Mike, was in the Marines and flew fighter planes. He's now a captain with American Airlines. Mead may be leaving South Point, but he wanted to leave some philosophical advice for those undergrads coming along there. Words that he himself followed on a course to success. “Don't take time off,” he said. “Don't get behind in your studies. Go to class. Challenge yourself.”

during the Christmas of 2011, thinking it would be a good lesson for our two biological children (both girls) EG and Gabrielle in what Christmas should be about. The girls viewed pictures and excerpts from interviews of the available children and selected Olga (Bella) from among them. She was 14 at the time and the girls were intrigued because she had stated that no one had ever given her a birthday gift before, My girls wanted to spoil her for Christmas. I emphasized to my family that this was just a 'hosting' program so don't go getting any ideas about adoption. Finally the day came when she arrived along with all the other children being hosted in the Charlotte area. I have never seen my two girls so excited. They made her a sign with her name on it in Ukrainian so she would recognize us at the airport. When she came down the escalator they fell into each others' arms as if they were long lost siblings separated at birth. I have never seen anything like it. We were initially concerned that the girls would have trouble communicating as Olga did not speak any English. However, the girls had no trouble 'bonding' despite the lack of a common language. They had a blast together. The second night she was with us my oldest walked into our bedroom and said, Ok, where do we sign?' meaning she wanted us to adopt Olga. Of course I had never considered adoption, but Olga won us over pretty quickly and we

More than 2,300 seniors to receive their diploma from Gaston County Schools

Cramer’s Laura Trull High schools to conduct a real hometown girl graduation ceremonies for Class of 2017 Graduation for Gaston County Schools is Saturday, June 10, and ten public high schools will conduct ceremonies that day to present diplomas to the Class of 2017. This year, 2,321 seniors will graduate from Gaston County Schools. Ashbrook, Bessemer City, Cherryville, Stuart W. Cramer, East Gaston, Forestview, Hunter Huss, North Gaston, and South Point will hold high school graduation on June 10 at 9:00 a.m. The ceremony for the Highland School of Technology is at 11:00 a.m. on June 10. Graduation exercises for Webb Street School and Warlick Academy take place on Thursday, June 8. The Webb Street ceremony is at 12:00 noon and Warlick’s ceremony is at 1:30 p.m. The Gaston Early College High School held its graduation on May 18. Thirty-three students received diplomas. “Each high school graduation is a well-

planned ceremony that honors and recognizes students in the Class of 2017,” said Superintendent of Schools W. Jeffrey Booker. “Graduation is a milestone for our seniors, and we are extremely proud of them as they begin a new and exciting phase in life. The Board of Education joins me in congratulating our graduates and extending best wishes to each one of them.” To ensure safety at graduation, all high schools will have additional security personnel and metal detectors will be used. Students, parents, relatives, school personnel, and guests will be subject to metal detection screening – this includes the screening of handbags. Because the security screenings take time, attendees should arrive early and be prepared to stand in line. Guests also should be aware of traffic congestion around the high schools and plan accordingly to allow time for parking.

Cramerton Middle School Beta Club raises funds for Pennies for Patients

Cramerton Middle School’s Beta Club recently collected $6,774.49 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society as part of their Pennies for Patients fundraising campaign. This was the second-highest total collected by any middle school in North Carolina. Marilou Christopher is the Beta Club adviser. In addition, Allison Trudnak’s homeroom was treated to lunch at the Olive Garden as a result of raising the most money at Cramerton. Gaston Braves open fast By Art Shoemaker With an early season record of 3-1 the American Legion baseball G-Braves are off to a fast start that will hopefully lead to a most successful 2017 season. The team opened the season with a loss to Lexington by a score of 8-4. The downfall in this initial game was four fielding miscues and failing to produce at the dish with runners in scoring position. Josh Benfield suffered the loss but it was not a bad outing as he allowed only four hits in his six innings of work. Timothy Davila and McKinley Scott each collected two hits. Those two along with Luke Bumgarner had an RBI for the Braves. After this opening loss, the G-Braves traveled to play Kings Mountain. The team rebounded in securing an 8-2 victory. The G-Braves had 16 hits for the night that produced the eight-run tally. Pacing the Braves hit parade were Scottie Lee, Timothy Davila, Mason Secrest, Josh Benfield and McKinley Scott who each collected multiple hits. Nick Roser was the winning hurler. Roser pitched five innings allowing two runs, five hits, and striking out five. Coach King used four additional pitchers in closing out the game. Last Friday Kings Mountain Post 166 paid a visit to “Abbey Yard” on the campus of Belmont Abbey College. The Braves played outstanding baseball before an excellent turnout of fans in winning by a 10-0 score. Austin Paradis started on the mound and threw three strong innings for the Braves. Paradis surrendered no runs while striking out

two batters and allowing one hit. Josh Benfield and Jordan Helms also turned impressive performances on the hill. Benfield, in his three innings of work, allowed no runs or hits. Helms finished up on the mound and was also sharp with his pitches. Zack Summerville and Timothy Davila each collected three hits to lead the way at the plate. Nick Roser added a triple in the Braves twelve hit night. The G-Braves finished up the first week of play in another outing at Belmont Abbey. The Maiden nine had opened their season with a 3-1 record but at the end of the night the Maiden squad suffered loss number two as the Braves continued hot in winning by a 12-3 count. Ethan Shell pitched six strong innings for the Braves to earn the win. Shell gave up four hits and three runs while striking out three. Nick Roser pitched one inning followed up by Jordan Helms who again was impressive on the mound. With his outstanding work in late innings Helms may prove to be the closer for the G-Braves pitching staff. For the second straight game the G-Braves garnered 12 hits. Nick Roser, Scott Benfield and Tyler Hannifin each had two hits. McKinley Scott stroked a long triple in driving in a couple of tallies for the Braves. Upcoming games will be a strong test for our locals. An undefeated Gastonia Post 23 squad pays a visit to Belmont followed by another home game against an always tough opponent in Shelby. But in early season games the Braves have demonstrated that they will be a strong contender in Area IV play.

Schools excel in state and national financial literacy competitions Gaston County Schools might have tomorrow’s top executives in the world of business and finance. Students from two high schools - Highland and South Point - won awards this year in three highly-competitive programs that focus on financial literacy. For the second time in three years, a Gaston County high school has earned a top 10 national finish in the Capitol Hill Challenge presented by the SIFMA Foundation. South Point High School finished fourth this year (2017) in the nation out of more than 4,000 school teams. The students - Nick Matthew, A.J. Robinson, and Charlie Tran - excelled in the national competition after winning the western regional and state championships in the year-long N.C. Stock Market Game. In the Stock Market Game, the contest focused on investing a hypothetical $100,000 in bonds, stocks, and mutual funds. The South Point students’ wise decision-making resulted in a $60,571 profit, enough to earn the state championship over 312 other teams. Their adviser is teacher David Grimes. The Highland School of Technology took third place in the Stock Market Game’s western regional competition. The Highland team included Landon Burr, Matthew Stewart, John Castillo, and Everett Stone. Their adviser is teacher Dan Froehlich. Highland earned a top 10 finish in the Capitol Hill Challenge national competition in 2015. Additionally, Highland student Katherine Kiser emerged as the state champion in the InvestWrite competition for fall 2016. That contest challenges students to put their critical thinking and writing skills to the test through various assignments related to investment principles. The South Point and Highland students were honored on Wednesday, May 24 during an awards luncheon in Charlotte. This year’s awards are in addition to others won by Gaston County teams during the 2015-2016 school year. That is when Highland had another N.C. InvestWrite winner; firstand second-place team finishes in the western regionals; and first-, second-, and third-place team finishes in the state stock market competition. Additionally, East Gaston High School earned third-place regional honors last year in the Stock Mar-

Highland School of Technology students Landon Burr, Matthew Stewart, John Castillo, Everett Stone, and Katherine Kiser and South Point High School students Nick Matthew, A.J. Robinson, and Charlie Tran were honored on Wednesday, May 24 during a luncheon in Charlotte for their award-winning efforts in the InvestWrite, Stock Market Game, and Capitol Hill Challenge financial literacy competitions. Photo provided ket Game. Dan Froehlich, the Highland team adviser, said, “These awards show that our students are excelling in financial literacy. We are very proud of their hard work, perseverance, and commitment to these programs. It takes a lot of time and effort to be successful in the competitions, and it is great to see our students do so well.” David Grimes, the South Point team adviser, added, “These competitions are designed to push students to use their critical thinking skills, work together as a team, and implement successful strategies. The knowledge and experience they gain through the competitions will put them ahead of other students in the field of business and finance and help them professionally in whatever career they choose.”

When asked what he wanted to do in the future Darnell says he is not sure He’s going to embrace college and see what happens from there. As he talks about college a huge smile comes across his face. He is ready to take on the new challenge. Darnell says he’s interested in computer science and possibly a business major. He’s also thinking about going into the Navy. Darnell only has one guiding principle when it comes to what he chooses to do with his life. “I want to make my Dad proud.” What more could anyone ask for. As children grow up there are times that parents look back and ponder. It’s common to for a parent to ask themselves if they did right by their children. Did they teach them the skills they needed to make it in the world. Darrell Johnson shouldn’t have that worry. His son Darnell is set. The future will be bright for that young man.
