Trio shares many years of mothering by Alan Hodge alan.bannernews@gmail.com
The East Gaston Adult Day Care senior center in Catawba Heights is a treasure-trove of stories, and the ones that clients 76-year-old Jean Miskelly, 82-year-old Ann Smith, and 87-year-old Minnie Pinkney tell of their experiences and thoughts on motherhood are some of the best. Miskelly raised four kids- Sharon, Todd, Jackie, and Brian in Stanley. Sharon teaches at East Gaston High, Brian is Minister of Music at First Baptist in Stanley, Todd works security at Andrews AFB, and Jackie is a housewife in Huntersville. Miskelly says she made sure all her children minded their Ps and Qs growing up. “I am lucky to say they never gave any trouble,” she said. “They were all good kids. However, on the rare occasions mischief was made, father F.E. Miskelly, who passed away in 2010, did the discipline chores. “He would paddle them, but not too often,” Jean said.
Ann Smith, originally from East Tennessee, raised her family in McAdenville. She and husband James, who worked at Pharr Yarns, had two kids- Danny, who passed away two years ago, and Pam who is a businesswoman. Smith credits the tight-knit McAdenville community for helping her children grow up right. “We kept them active in McAdenville Community Center activities so we didn't have too many problems,” Smith said. “They had good supervision at the Community Center.” Church was also a part of the Smith family upbringing. “We went to McAdenville Baptist,” Smith said. “We didn't let the children roam the streets.” Smith says “grounding” her kids usually nipped any misbehaving in the bud. “They loved to go to Kates Skating Rink,” she said. “If they cut up I told them they couldn't go skating and they usually worked.” See MOTHERS page 3

Readers of the BannerNews no doubt saw the story last week extolling the Mt. Holly Community Garden, but the Belmont Community Garden is also a major player on the fruit and vegetables scene and is still growing strong. The Belmont Community Garden lot is owned by Jonathan Taylor and located behind the building he also owns at 21 N. Main. The idea for a community garden in downtown Belmont was hatched in the spring of 2014 when Taylor and some friends were sitting around relaxing. See GARDEN page 2

onions. Several plots have been planted over the past couple of weeks with tomatoes and such for summer. “People have been coming by on their lunch breaks, in the afternoons, and on weekends to get their plots ready for warm weather,” Taylor said. The Belmont Community Garden has several fun and educational events coming up. These include a ladybug release that kids will enjoy, a make your own salad from community garden ingredients, and the arrival of beehives in early June. The Belmont Community Garden is an oasis of green in downtown Belmont. As for those who might see its space as a potential parking lot, Taylor says forget it. “The best use of this property is bio dynamic or echo elegant and not a parking lot.” Folks can visit the Belmont Community Garden Facebook page for the latest on what's going on there.
EDUCATORS from page 1 and professionalism of our employees, who represent everything that is great about Gaston County Schools. We congratulate the award recipients and applaud all educators for what they do every day to help children and inspire success.” The awards ceremony will air on Channel 21 (the Education Station) the week of May 22 and be available on the Gaston County Schools YouTube channel. Mammano teaches American History and Advanced Placement U.S. History. She has 17 years of experience in education and earned a Bachelor of Arts in English education from Muskingum College in Ohio. She also has National Board Certification. Colleagues describe Mrs. Mammano as a creative, hard worker who models professionalism in all that she does. She has a positive attitude and goes above and beyond expectations every day to meet the needs of her students. Her students say that she is caring, consistent, dedicated, and unique. Recreating events from World War I and designing dinner parties for lessons about the 1920s and the Great Depression are among her students’ favorite classroom activities. Whitworth began her career with Gaston County Schools in 1979 as a teacher at Catawba Heights Elementary. She taught at Woodhill, Brookside, and Robinson elementary schools before becoming an assistant principal at Forestview High School in 2006. She was named the principal at Catawba Heights in 2009 and became the principal at Belmont Central in 2014.

A Gaston County native and graduate of Ashbrook High School, Whitworth earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Johnson C. Smith University, a master’s degree in elementary education from Winthrop University, and a master’s degree in school administration from Gardner-Webb University. Whitworth is truly dedicated to the education of children. She is willing to do whatever it takes to ensure that all students feel loved and respected while also holding them to the highest of expectations. She is the consummate professional who understands the importance of servant leadership and works diligently to better her school by involving parents and seeking ways to make changes that positively influence learning. The 2017-2018 Gaston County Schools Assistant Principal of the Year is Donna Kelly from Rankin Elementary School. Kelly is a graduate of South Point High School. Kelly earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Western Carolina University and a master’s degree in school administration from UNC-Charlotte. Kelly taught at Belmont Central Elementary School before serving as an instructional specialist in the Curriculum and Instruction Department. She became the assistant principal at Rankin Elementary in 2011. She says it is important to teach students about respecting themselves and respecting others. Her advice for teachers is to meet students where they are and help them to learn and grow from that point. She empowers teachers to make the best decisions for their students and believes it is important to always keep in mind that our vision is to inspire success and a lifetime of learning. The garden itself is about 100 feet long and 65 feet wide. It's surrounded by a heavy wood and wire fence with a farmyard type gate at each end. Inside the fence, raised beds ten feet long and five feet wide are arranged. A unique aspect of the garden is its water supply. Rainwater is collected on top of a nearby building and stored in a 1,500 gallon tank which is piped to the garden. There are about 40 beds being worked by families, but Taylor says the word “community” is an important part of the setup “We have donated two beds to Page Elementary School and three beds to Belmont Central Elementary so the students can come for field trips and experience gardening first hand,” Taylor said. “Cub Scout Pack 56 also comes to the garden.” According to Taylor, a new layer of rich soil for the beds was recently donated for this growing season by the Keep Gastonia Beautiful organization. Currently, the garden has several plots brimming with vegetables that were planted last fall such as kale, lettuce, cabbage, and

MOTHERS Minnie Pinkney grew up and raised her kids- all 11 of them- in Hamlet, N.C. They were named Chella, Junie, Eula, Donnia, Sherry, Cindy, Iris, Troy, Robbie, Melick, and Leroy. Pinkney had a real challenge on her hands because her husband died she was left to raise the kids. “My mother Mary Morrison helped and so did my aunt Odessa Covington,” Pinkney said. Pinkney says simply feeding and clothing the crew was difficult at times, but everyone made it through school. “They all graduated,” she said proudly. Woe was the Pinkney

child that bucked. “I did not have time for foolishness or mischief,” Minnie said. “I would set down the law and if that didn’t work I would tear their butts up.” Like a lot of mothers who raised kids in the days of yore, Miskelly, Smith and Pinkney are mystified at some of today’s parenting styles. “These days, kids don’t listen to what their parents tell them,” Pinkney said. “They talk back and everything. The parents are too busy to watch the kids and guide them the right way. Sometimes it hurts to do it, but I say stick to the stick if you have to.” Happy Mother’s Day.

We Celebrate Mother ’s Day... Sunday, May 14
The scoop on flowers for Mom vis, who never married and never had children of her own, grew old, she criticized Mother’s Day as overly commercial, even trying to have it removed from the calendar. Those efforts failed, and Mother’s Day remains popular now, more than 100 years after the idea for it was conceived. While Mother’s Day traditions have changed since Jarvis first proposed the holiday, many people feel it’s customary to give mothers gifts on Mother’s Day, when moms take the day off from chores and relax with their families. Flowers make for popular Mother’s Day gifts, and well-wishers who want to give the
special women in their lives flowers this year can consider a host of varieties. Carnations Carnations are popular Mother’s Day flowers, perhaps because they are available in a number of colors. That means it’s highly likely sons, daughters, husbands and others gifting moms this Mother’s Day can find some carnations in Mom’s favorite color. Ask your florist about what each carnation color symbolizes, as each has its own unique meaning. Pink carnations, for example, are believed to symbolize a mother’s love.
Roses Few mothers can resist roses, making them one of the more popular flowers come Mother’s Day. Roses are symbolic of love and make the perfect floral gift for mothers who like traditional flowers. If you want to spice things up, order a bouquet made up of roses of various colors. Daffodils Yellow is synonymous with spring, and daffodils can highlight the season in which Mother’s Day takes place while also providing a cheerful look that’s perfect for Mother’s Day floral bouquets. Daffodils can be given on their own or added to mixed bouquets. Daffodils also last quite a while when cared for correctly, giving moms more than just a few days to enjoy their bouquets.

other’s Day is an annual holiday that honors motherhood and provides an opportunity for men, women and children to show their mothers how much they appreciate them. The tradition of Mother’s Day in the United States dates back more than a century to 1908, when West Virginia native Anna Jarvis held a memorial service to honor her mother, who had passed away three years earlier, and all mothers in Grafton, West Virginia. Mother’s Day would ultimately become a national holiday in the United States in 1914, thanks in large part to Jarvis’ campaigning. As Jar-

Mother’s Day... When I walk out my front door I see LIFE! A towering forest of trees, carefully planned landscaping, my awaiting vegetable garden, butterflies, birds; Life! When you walk out your front doors your scene may be vastly different but if you look hard enough, you will find life too. If nowhere else, you need only look at yourself. Wernher von Braun, notable aerospace engineer and champion of space exploration, is remembered remarking that if you only consider the human brain and one other human organ like an eye, ear, or heart, it is mathematically impossible for those two synergistic organs to have evolved together let alone our whole complex of organs in a human being. And readers, when you and I think about it, our lives would not exist without one special person; our mothers. Mothers are unique and awesome but honestly, our memories of our mothers and Mother’s Day can conjure up a mixed bag of emotions can’t they. Sometimes, if you are old enough, you remember shows like Ozzie and Harriet where home life was idyllic. Some of us, however, came through life under less than idyllic circumstances and sometimes they were fraught with dark, painful memories. What I have come to learn in seventy years is if we individually embrace a spirit of gratefulness, then our painful memories will fade and grace, mercy and understanding will largely replace them. As a parent and grandparent, I am grateful for the incredible amount of information available to us today that can greatly help you and me and our children and grandchildren with parenting skills. In contrast, our parents and grandparents didn’t have all this wonderful advice. They had to navigate “by the seat of their pants” even though they weren’t seated in a WWII army aircraft. I’ll bet there were times, however, when they wished they
were flying high above the clouds instead of dealing with unexpected difficulties with a colicky baby or rebellious child. When you and I Dennis Siracusa think about gratefulness most of us can recount many instances when we expected it; or at least hoped to see it, but didn’t. What causes us to be ungrateful? Max Lucado, in his book “You’ll get through this” says ungratefulness is often caused because we’re “too busy, too cautious, too self-centered, too arrogant.” He also notes that ingratitude today has reached epic proportions. Sadly, too many of us are navigating our world thinking the world owes us something; and when I say us, I include me. Even though I love gratefulness and try to embrace it, I can slip into “It’s all about me” just like the next guy. So how did I get ahold of myself when an elderly lady in the right hand turn lane turned left in front of me. Well after I vented thoroughly, and I heard the Lord telling me someday I’ll be old; real old. I repented, asked for forgiveness and prayed for the elderly lady. The bible tells us in Ephesians 5:20 to “Give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” As we practice gratefulness, the more it will become second nature to us. When Jesus met with His disciples for the last supper, the creator of all creation took time to give thanks for a simple loaf of bread. How can we do less? And on this Mother’s Day let’s thank God for our mothers because, without them none of us would even be here.

Meditations Don’t fear Lo-debar
Have you visited a place called Lo-debar? Lo-debar is where Mephibosheth, son of Jonathan, grandson of King Saul, lived. Lo-debar is a place of no pastures, a barren wilderness where no one would choose to live. So, how did the grandson of a king end up in such a place? After King Saul and Jonathan were killed in battle, the nurse of Mephibosheth, took him and ran to Lo-debar. In her haste to escape, she dropped Mephibosheth, and he became disabled in both feet. So, Mephibosheth now lives in a barren place, fearful for his life. He lived in physical isolation as well as emotional and social fear and isolation. Almost every town has a Lo-debar. You know the place where they tell you not to visit after dark. It is the place of social and emotional isolation. As a United Methodist itinerant pastor, I have lived in various towns. When I arrive I am told by neighbors, “Now, don’t go up on the hill.” In other words stay away from the places of Lo-debar. Your town may have a particular name for that place. Usually, when I am told not to visit such a place that is the very place I want to visit. I am sure it is also the place we would find program of contemporary works by twenti- Jesus. Jesus did not run from the lepers, Saeth and twenty-first century composers. The maritans, or the places called Lo-debar. “So he left Judea and returned to Galilee. He had performance is free to public. A love offering to go through Samaria on the way.” John 4:3-4 will be taken up to benefit Mt. Holly Community Relief Organization (CRO).

NLT. Wait, Jesus had to go through Samaria? Isn’t this the Lo-debar of the Jews? Isn’t this enemy territory? Why would Jesus go to such a place? Jesus had to Rev. Angela Pleasants visit a well. Jesus District had to visit a woman Superintendent at this well. And be- of Catawba Valley cause he stopped at Methodist Churches this well for a drink of water, a life was transformed. And because one life was transformed, others in the town heard the news about Jesus. Instead of running away from our Lo-debars why not trust God for the transformation that can take place. Even in Lo-debar God is at work. All of us at one time were in a place of Lodebar. It might not have been a physical place, but we were in our spiritual Lo-debar. Because of a fall, we were crippled by sin and rebellion. And God was able to reach us and transform our heart. We don’t have to be afraid of the Lo-debars. The light of Christ can shine brightly in these places. So use godly wisdom as we build relationships in our places of Lodebars and trust God for the outcome.

You Are Not Alone! Often when life becomes difficult, we feel so alone. During times of sorrow, whether it is due to sickness or despair, we wonder where God is when we need His presence in our lives. Are we alone? Has God truly abandoned us when we need Him the most? Absolutely not! God is with us during our triumphs, and during those times of turmoil and hurt in our lives too. 2 Kings 6:823 recalls the story of Elisha and his servant. Elisha was being pursued by the Syrians because he, through his prophecies, had been telling the King of Israel of the Syrian army’s movements. One day the Syrian army arrived at Dothan, the city where Elisha dwelled, to capture him. As the army approached, Elisha’s servant saw them, and was terrified. However, Elisha was perfectly at peace. Elisha’s servant said in verse 15, “What shall we do” (NKJV). Elisha prayed to God, asking Him to open the servant’s eyes that he may see. God opened the eyes of the servant spiritually, and he saw all around the mountain the horses and chariots of fire that belonged to God’s army. Elisha did not fear, because he knew God was there to protect him all along. In Elisha’s darkest hour, God was right there with him, ready to protect him from all of his enemies. In the same way Elisha’s servant was spiritually blind, so are we many times. Elisha’s servant was so caught up in fear, that he had no idea God was there all along. He assumed they were alone, having to face their enemies on their own. This
is often the same way we approach life’s struggles. Too often we assume we are alone to face all of the things we go through on a daily basis. Yet, God is always with us, standing ready to help Rev. Trent Rankin us and defend us no Salvation Church matter what our need Gastonia, NC or struggles are. Elisha stood there salvationchurchnc.org at peace, facing the salvationchurchnc@gmail.com advancing Syrian army, because he understood God was there. He had replaced fear with confidence in God. Elisha, because of his trust in God, knew what God could do for him. This should be the resolve of every Christian. We should approach every situation knowing that God walks with us everywhere we go. Isaiah 41:10 reminds us, “Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand” (NKJV). Even in the midst of your deepest troubles, do not fear, because God is with you. You are never alone, God will never abandon you. During life’s struggles, look up, God is there!

Montcross Area Chamber “Network After Work” Guests at a Montcross Area Chamber “Network After Work” got a glimpse at both the past and the future of a 1913 trolley that one day will roll along the old Piedmont & Northern railroad line that runs from downtown Belmont to Belmont Abbey College and beyond. A volunteer nonprofit organization formed to purchase and renovate the trolley hosted Chamber members and friends at the Belmont Public Works building, where the trolley is stored for renovation. The group raised funds to buy the trolley and transport it to Belmont in 2015, and more funds will be required to complete the restoration. The car is similar to one that operated in Belmont many decades ago. Trolley Board Chair Rob Pressley told more than 100 attending the event the group’s vision includes a downtown Belmont building to store the trolley and serve as a trolley and train museum, giving the city a unique new attraction for residents and tourists to enjoy. For more information on Belmont Trolley and how to support the project, call 704.914.7730.

South Point ends regular season on 8-game win streak by John Wilson john.bannernews@gmail.com
The 2017 baseball season is not yet over, but for the Red Raiders the regular season could not have ended any better. South Point closed the curtain on the 2017 season riding an 8 game win streak. There is no other way to put it. South Point is kicking some butt. The Red Raiders have not lost a game since they suffered a stinging 4-2 loss to East Gaston in the Gaston County Baseball Tournament. That loss came on April 17th. Since then the Red Raiders have been on an unbelivable tear. South Point finished out the regular season by mowing through, Bessemer City, Stuart Cramer, North Gaston, Cramer again and Lake Norman Charter. After finishing up the regular season the Red Raiders dismantled Huss, Cramer and North Gaston to win the Big South 2A/3A Tournament. When the dust settled on the baseball dia-
mond South Point was sitting on top of the conference with a 21-5 season record and a 12-2 conference record. Now South Point is waiting to see who will come to Belmont when the 2017 baseball playoffs get underway. With their record the Red Raiders are all but assured a regional #1 seed. To get to this spot the Red Raiders combined solid pitching, strong defense and heavy bats. Over the last few weeks strong performances have been turned in by Tim Davila, Ethan Shell, Grant Tilley, Evan Mauldin and Preston Connor The East Gaston loss seemed to have triggered something in the Red Raiders psyche. South Point has a renewed focus. A new intensity. Since mid-April South Point has shown they can play with anyone. They have also demonstrated that they are capable of dominating. Half of the Red Raiders last 8 wins have been shut outs. The Red Raiders blanked, Huss, North Gaston and Cramer on their way to the conference title. The Red Raiders seem to be peaking at just the right moment. Now we will see what else South Point has as the playoffs get underway.

It’s playoff time, let the speculation begin by John Wilson john.bannermnews@gmail.com
For several area softball and baseball teams the future is a waiting game. The regular season is now over. It’s playoff time again in North Carolina. So now what? As of press time Monday the baseball and softball teams of Stuart Cramer, South Point and East Gaston were waiting to find out if they made it into the playoffs. So now it’s all about number crunching and speculation. The final decision as to who plays and who doesn’t is determined by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association. Here is what we know. Baseball For South Point baseball the waiting game isn’t that big a deal. The Red Raiders won the Big South tournament and the Big South. They are likely assured the top spot in the Western region. Things are a little more dicey for the Cramer and East Gaston baseball teams. Cramer finished up 13-12. They should have no problem getting a spot. They are likely to to be in the middle of the pack when regional seeding is set. As for the Warriors, well they might not make it. East Gaston finish the year with 9-15-1. In most databases they are not ranked among the teams likely to receive a shot.
Softball South Point softball should get a solid seed in the Western region. The Lady Raider finished 2017 at 12-10. South Point head coach Leah Brooks was playing the waiting game Sunday afternoon. When asked to speculate where the Lady Raiders may end up Brooks was quick to say, “I just don’t know.” The Cramer softball team ended the 2017 season at 11-14. They finished up the Big South in 6th place with a 5-9 record. Cramer head coach Matt Scholz has a practical outlook when it comes to the playoffs. Scholz knows that if Cramer gets a spot they will be one of the lower seeds. That means a tough uphill battle. “I think we will have to travel to a 1, 2 or 3 seed.” Scholz said. East Gaston finished up at 7-14. Despite playing very well among their Big South foes the Lady Warriors playoff outlook looks bleak. So what does all this mean? Well, nothing? Actually, everything. It’s all speculation. Until the final brackets are set it’s any ones guess as to what will finally shake down.

Students’ artwork on billboards As you drive around Gaston County, pay close attention to the billboards -- you just may see outstanding student artwork on two of them. Stuart W. Cramer High School student Chloe Kaylor and Forestview High School student Nicole Rodriguez were winners in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. Now,
their work is up on billboards for all to see. A picture of Rodriguez’s sculpture is on a billboard at the intersection of Union Road and Sugarcane Lane in Gastonia, and a picture of Kaylor’s painting is on a billboard on Wilkinson Boulevard near the intersection of Keener Boulevard in Belmont.

Gaston College 2017 Summer Camp offers Creative Writing workshop for teens For teens who have a lot to say and need some guidance on how to put it into words, the Gaston College Summer Camp program offers a Creative Writing Workshop. Using writers’ group models of effective approaches to creative writing and the writing process, the workshop will help participants bring to life an idea for a short story, a blog, fantasy or science fiction, a romantic novel, a poem, or any other written work. Over the four days of the workshop, participants will produce one short work of fiction and one poem, share them with their
peers and workshop facilitators, and get feedback that will help them refine their work. The Creative Writing Workshop is designed for teens between 14 and 18. The sessions meet Monday, June 12, through Thursday, June 15, from 9 a.m. to noon on the Dallas Campus of Gaston College. The fee for the workshop is $75. Space is limited. Jasmine Cox, Special Projects Coordinator for the Textile Technology Center at Gaston College, volunteered April 20 at the Shamrock Gardens Elementary School Career Day in Charlotte teaching students about textiles. She explained how textiles (which include clothes, towels, bed sheets, carpeting and more) played a major role in their lives every day. She also presented the 300 student in grades K-5, examples of smart textile products and talked to students about the steps they need to take to become a textile technologist or engineer. Belmont Abbey College, the Gaston County Police Department and Gaston County Schools have announced the inaugural recipients of the James Buie Scholarship Program which provides a full scholarship for selected students in pursuit of a Criminal Justice degree at Belmont Abbey College. The program supports two students each year over the next eight years. Upon completion of their degree and qualifications of the Gaston County Police Department, the GCPD will offer these students full-time employment with the department for a period of not less than five years. The inaugural recipients are Rebecca Gomez, of Gaston County Schools and Allison Kennedy a rising junior at Belmont Abbey College. “When I received the news I was really excited and looking forward to working with the Gaston County Police Department. That moment changed my life because law enforcement has always been my career choice,” said awardee Rebecca Gomez, who will graduate
this June from the Highland School of Technology. The Gaston County Police Department has established a fund at the College from drug forfeitures. The goal of the scholarship is to increase diversity in the department with minority and female applicants receiving priority. The Police Department, Gaston County Schools and Belmont Abbey will, for the first two years of the program select a current rising junior and one incoming freshman for this prestigious scholarship. The scholarship program is another way to provide assistance for students to attend college as well as promote careers in public service such as law enforcement. The scholarship is named for Belmont Abbey College alum, James Buie ’86 who was formerly a Chief of the Gaston County Police Department and was the county’s first African-American chief. Buie preceded current Chief Joe Ramey and served the Gaston County Police Department for 29 years.

Goff receives South Point Duke scholarship Red Raiders Congratulations to Gaston Day School senior, Lydia Goff, who has been awarded the Washington Duke Scholarship at Duke University. The scholarship is being renamed the David M. Rubenstein Scholars Program as outgoing trustee Chairman David Rubenstein has given Duke University $20 million to endow a year-old scholarship program to benefit first-generation college students. A 1970 Lydia Goff alumnus, Rubenstein noted he was himself a first-generation college student before going on to success as a lawyer and a financier. The son of a Baltimore postal worker, he said he “certainly could have benefited” back in his student days from the sort of help the scholarship provides. Launching in time for the start of the 2016-17 academic year, the program offered full-ride scholarships covering tuition, room and board, books, a computer and other expenses for an initial group of 30 students. Duke is scaling it up to cover 60 students in each year’s incoming class, with the idea that eventually 240 will be in the program at any given time.

CROSSWORD PUZZLE
Wyatt starting the girls 1600M race in last Tuesday’s Division 1 Gaston County middle school track meet, held at East Gaston.
Track dedicated to former coach Last week the track at East Gaston High was dedicated to longtime track and cross country coach Eddie Wyatt who will be inducted into the Mount Holly Sports Hall of Fame in August. Conversations started months ago with East Gaston Principal Jennifer Reep and Athletic Director Tom Adams about dedicating the track to Coach Wyatt, who retired from coaching at EG in 2014 after more than three decades of involvement with the cross country and track programs there. Since Mt. Holly Middle School was hosting the Division 1 meet this year, it seemed appropriate to unveil the plaque at that time. East Gaston 1986 graduate and Mt. Holly Middle School teacher and coach Michael Nixon asked Wyatt if he would “help out” with the meet, under the guise of getting him there so we could surprise him with the honor. Then he actually did hang around and start a couple of the races, for old times sake!
