Warriors, healed up and ready to roll “They both work well together.
By John Wilson John.bannernews@gmail.com
2012 was a tough year for the East Gaston Warriors. They went into the season with high hopes. However injuries and inconsistent play caused havoc for head coach Sean Joyce and crew. The Warriors finished the year with a 2-8 record. Coach Joyce believes that the Warriors are ready to hit the field with a healthy unit this year. The East Gaston roster will be filled with players that gathered valuable experience during the injury riddled 2012 campaign. “Right now we are healthy, Joyce said. “A lot of last years sophomores had to be moved up to play. They learned a lot. We have a lot more experience. Offensive outlook The Warriors will continue to run the shotgun based triple option offense. Fortunately for East Gaston they will have an array of weapons to work with. “We should be set offensively, Joyce said. “The skill positions are set. The Warriors will employ dual quarterbacks in 2013. Tyler Price and Austin Woods will split time working to deceive opposing defensives. Coach joyce believes that each player will bring something special to the huddle and the lineup. “Each will be in depending on what we do, Joyce said. “Tyler has great leadership skills and a strong work ethic, Joyce said. “Austin can play a lot of positions. He is just an athlete. Some people would thing that having two QB’s would be counterproductive. Not coach Joyce. He believes there will only be benefits.
Price and woods will have a strong supporting cast. The offensive backfield will include Fullback Dontavis Walker and halfback BJ Robbins. Coach Joyce likes what his backs can do. “BJ is one of our best playmakers, Joyce said. As for Walker, Joyce hopes he will continue to be a punishing runner. In 2012 the bullish fullback proved to be a force in the East Gaston running game. “Dontavis is one of our stronger bigger players, Joyce went on to say. “He is a difference maker. Also seeing time in the Warriors backfield will be halfback George Walker. When the Warriors go to the air they will have a solid set of receivers to count on. The receiving corps is led by Bailey Crane and Corey Thompson. “Bailey is one of the fastest kids we have, Joyce said. “He also has great hands. Joyce believes that Thompson will also snare a few catches this year for East Gaston. “He’s an athlete, Joyce said. “And he has good hands. Return to the big south The East Gaston offensive line in 2013 should be much improved over the unit from 2012. “The line looks pretty good. coach Joyce said. Leading the Warriors up front will be Mega7 All conference Tackle Jordan Abernathy. The other tackle position will be held down by Sam
McIniss. Rounding out the front line will be left guard Alex Furr and Corey Hughs at center.

Last year Coach Joyce decided to go with an aggressive 4-3 defensive scheme. Defensive Coordinator Steve Norwood was expected to get solid production from an up and coming group of players. Unfortunately things just didn’t work out that way. Lackluster performances and a slew of injuries forced the Warriors to change things up. What Joyce decided to do was adopt a simpler 4-4 defense. The 4-4 scheme gave East Gaston the ability to work with what they had. The switch proved to be a success. The Warriors put up some of their best defensive performances running the 4-4. This year coach Joyce is going to employ the linebacker heavy 3-4. “This year we will be going with a base 3-4, Joyce said “The system marries up well with the players we have. The Warrior defensive philosophy is simple. Get to the ball. It is a style and mind set that coach Joyce is getting his players to work on. “We want to put pressure on the football, Joyce said. “We need to fly to the ball. The 2013 Warrior defense will feature “Mike Linebacker Morgan Ensley and fellow backer George Miller. The defensive line will be anchored by defensive ends Justice Smith and Sean Terrell.

WARRIORS: healed up and ready to go From page 2B did a lot to get ready for this years season. “We had a good off season, Joyce said. “We had about 50 to 55 kids down here working out in our off season training program. The East Gaston program was aided by a new weight room and a positive attitude from the Warriors on field leaders.
“Our core group of leaders Ensley, Price, Woods, Walker, Terrell and Miller were here every day, Joyce said. “BJ Robbins is another of our leaders who was always here. When the Warriors take the field they will be doing so in the newly remodeled Arrowhead stadium. Last year the East Gaston stadium dilemma forced the Warriors to play some home games on
the road. Despite the setbacks Coach Joyce said that the Warriors will have to adapt. Some home games will take place at Arrowhead stadium. Some will need to be moved. Return to the Big South 2013 will be a homecoming of sorts for the East Gaston program. The Warriors will be returning to the Big

South Conference after playing the last few years in the Charlotte based Mega-7 Conference. “We are excited about being in the Big South, coach Joyce said. “Every Friday night will be tough. With a return to the Big South East Gaston will be able to rekindle the Gaston County based rivalries that have made Warrior football exciting. it would be an understatement to
say that the Warrior faithful were not thrilled with playing the opponents of the Charlotte based Mega7 “Being in Gaston County will be conducive to a good Friday night. Joyce said. “The atmosphere will be better. The crowds should be better. Season Predictions 2013 will be a year full of
promise. East Gaston has an outside shot at a .500 season. But to do that the Warriors weapons heavy offense will need to put points on the board. The defense will need to be stingy and stay hungry. They will need to do something they failed to do last year. Stop the run. To win in the Big South East Gaston will also have to play mistake free football for four full quarters.

POINT RED RAIDERS VARSITY FOOTBALL
South Point Red Raiders, ready to roll By John Wilson John.bannernews@gmail.com
Last year many thought that the Red Raiders were going to be in rebuilding mode. The team had lost a significant amount of its talent to graduation. It turned out that in 2012 the young Red Raiders grew up in a hurry. Led by a dominating running attack and a punishing defense the Red Raiders went deep into the playoffs. Unfortunately for Big Red the juggernaut was derailed in a tough 27-21 home loss to Statesville. South Point may have been able to win that game if not hampered by costly turnovers. Going into 2013 South
Point has the tools it needs to again make a credible run at another state title. Head Football Coach Mickey Lineberger is confident his team has what it takes to have a big season. “We have high expectations, Lineberger said. “We have a lot of returning players. Two of those players are fullback Tyler Bray and linebacker Daishon Davis. Both were productive players that helped to propel the South Point offensive and defensive units. Coach Lineberger holds both players in high regard. “Tyler Bray is the returning Big South Offensive player of the year, Lineberger said. “He
amassed 2,556 yards and 36 touchdowns last year. He was all state. We expect big things from him. Lineberger is equally proud of linebacker Daishon Davis. “Daishon was the Big South Defensive Player of the Year, Lineberger said. “He had 199 tackles in 13 games. I’ve never seen anything like that. Offensive Outlook: An aerial Red Bone? Anyone that goes against South Point knows that the Red Raider will run the ball. The Red Bone triple option attack has laid waste to many an opposing defense. What will make this

year’s version of the Red Bone different will be the Red Raiders belief that they will be able to throw the ball at will. “I believe we will be able to throw this year better than we have in the last five years. Lineberger said. As with any offensive everything starts with the quarterback. 6’ 174 pound junior quarterback Juquan Brooks will return to call the signals for South Point. Last year Brooks showed that he was not only an excellent runner but a good game manager. The only thing he lacked was a big arm to be able to go up top at will to stretch defenses. “He has gotten bigger and faster, Lineberger said. “He has also improved his passing game. We will be able to throw the ball this year when we want to. Not when we have to. Sharing the backfield with Brooks will be an array of talent that opposing defenses will find hard to contain. South Point’s lead runner will again be Tyler Bray. Bray is a deceptive runner who possesses good vision. Bray combines a weaving style with an ability to run low to the ground when he hits the hole. He follows his blockers and has a nose for the first down marker and the goal line. When Bray isn’t getting the ball Brooks will be handing the ball to wingbacks, Diontrea King and senior Trey Crenshaw. “Diontrea has looked good running and catching the ball, Lineberger said. “He will also be our backup quarterback. Crenshaw has had some injury problems but should still be able to contribute to

RED RAIDERS: ready to roll From page 11B Defensive Outlook pounds he has improved his speed and his hands.” Coach Lineberger is confident Green will do his share. “He has good hands.” The South Point offensive line is veteran group of athletes capable of making the holes needed to get the running game going Leading the Red Raiders up front is all Big South Conference left tackle Taylor Ginn. The 6’3 260 pound tackle will line up next to senior Josh Perrigo. Perrigo will hold down the left guard slot. On the other side of the line the right tackle spot will be played by Brian Miller. “Last year he played guard,” Lineberger said. “We are moving him to right tackle.” Former tight end Jacob Hoyle will line up in the middle at center. Coach Lineberger thinks the 6’ 190 pound Hoyle is up to the challenge. “He has looked good in the early going,” Lineberger said. The remaining guard spot will fall to seniors Matt Mellette and Nick Schultz. Both are battling for the spot.
South Point will continue to deploy the 3-4 hybrid under the tutelage of Defensive Coordinator Phil Tate. Tate is a master at making adjustments. South Point’s defense is set up to make adjustments easy to implement. “We have built in adjustments,” Lineberger said. “We will adjust according to who we play.” Coach Lineberger stresses that there are no stars on his team. He believes that everyone needs to contribute to help the team win. With that said there are some players who stand out on the defensive side of the ball. Two such players are Tanner Muse and Daishon Davis. Davis is a human wrecking ball. The 6’2 130 pound senior is an aggressive sideline to sideline tackling machine. Tanner Muse on the other hand is the Red Raiders safety. Lineberger thinks Muse brings a lot to the table. He is the quarterback of the defense,” Lineberger said. “He is a play maker. We are counting on big things from him.” The 6’3 210 pound Muse has re-
ceived interest from several major NCAA football programs. The South Point defensive line will center around senior defensive lineman Marcus McCollough. “Marcus is our leader up front,” Lineberger said. “He has worked hard.” Last year the defensive backfield was a real question mark going into the season. The cornerback tandem of Richard dunning and Donavan Stowe matured in a hurry. Both will be a factor when opposing teams try to throw on Big Red. The Big South Coach Lineberger thinks that the retooled Big South conference will be tough. Gone are Kings Mountain and Crest. New to the conference will be Lincoln Charter and Gaston County nemesis East Gaston. Lineberger expects every conference matchup to be tough. “Everyone has improved this year,” Lineberger stated. “There are a lot of talented players out there. I’m looking to see some real dog fights.” Coach Lineberger believes that even through Crest has left the confer-
ence they are still a formidable opponent that keeps Big Red on their toes. “I want them on our schedule.” Lineberger said. Team Strengths and Predictions Turnovers killed the Red Raiders hopes of a state title last year. Coach Lineberger is going to make sure his players focus on holding on to the ball. “Turnovers hurt last year,” Lineberger said. “We hurt ourselves. We want to limit them this year.” The coach plans on sending his message loud and clear. If you put the ball on the ground you will have to pay the piper. “If you fumble in practice you will be running.” Lineberger said. Coach Lineberger thinks that his squad has the tools in place to win big this year. He believes Big Red possesses a significant amount of speed and experience. He believes these factors will help the Red Raiders this year. “We have a lot of experience this year,” Lineberger said. “We also have better team speed than we have had in a long time. Another Red Raiders strong point is the coaching staff. South Point is
coached by a dedicated group of coaches. “We have over 300 years of experience in 14 coaches,” Lineberger said. “There is a lot of football there. There are a lot of championships.” Lineberger counts on his staff to not only teach football but teach life skills as well. Lineberger wants his players to be not only good players but good people. 2013 should be a good year for South Point. If the Red Raiders don’t take the Big South it will be a disappointment for Raider Nation. For South Point to make a serious run they will need to stay focused. The South Point players will need to know that EVERYONE will be gunning to knock the Red Raiders off. They are marked. They need not forget that. They need to limit the turnovers and play solid football. “We need to stay hungry,” Lineberger stated. “We don’t need to complacent. We need to get better every day.” IF the South Point players listen to their coach; IF they get a few breaks; IF they play heads up football Red Raider Nation can start booking hotel accommodations in Chapel Hill.
