Lights go on in McAdenville for the 62nd year By Alan Hodge alan.bannernews@gmail.com

Last Friday evening’s cool and clear weather formed the perfect scene for the 62nd annual holiday light show in McAdenville- aka Christmas Town USA. The lighting ceremony took place in front of the Pharr family YMCA. The lights will remain on until Dec. 26. As has been the tradition for several years, a student from McAdenville Elementary School threw the switch that turned on over 100,000 Christmas lights and displays in the village. The student that was selected to turn the

lights on this year is Dwayne Anthony Cole, III. His parents are Dwayne Cole and Alnita Gordon Cole. He is in Mrs. Shore’s second grade class. He lives in Belmont. He has an older brother. His favorite thing about school is math and reading. His favorite thing to do at home is to watch shows and his favorite is “Teen Titans”. He also likes to ride his bike. His favorite color is red. “This is the best day of my life,” Dwayne said. “I always wanted to do this and knew one day my wish would come true.” Going to see the lights this year? In 2016, I had the opportunity to attend the SeventyFifth Commemoration of the Attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese. I was fortunate to have met a group of Boy Scouts from Troop 13 in Placerville, California who were there to support one of their local heroes and USS Arizona Survivor, Lieutenant Commander Louis Conter (retired). The scouts and their leadership allowed me to tag along last year and when the group was planning this year’s remembrance trip, I was included and returned to Pearl Harbor on December 1 to take part in the events and ceremonies leading up to the Remembrance event on December 7, 2017. At the recent Cramerton Board of Commissioners meeting, Town Manager David Pugh updated the Board that upon the retirement of Police Chief Greg Ratchford on November 30th, current Deputy Chief Brad Adams would be named Interim Police Chief beginning December 1, 2017. Pugh also stated that the search for the full-time Police Chief position will begin in January 2018. “Deputy Chief Adams is already a highly capable and accomplished member of the CPD command staff and his knowledge of police procedures and operations makes him an excellent choice for the Interim Police Chief position,” said Pugh. Adams was first hired as a reserve police officer in 2001 and then a full time officer in

2002. He was promoted to Sergeant in 2005 and served in that capacity for over three years until being promoted to Captain in 2009. Adams was promoted to Deputy Chief in 2016. A graduate of American Military University with a degree in Criminal Justice, Adams has extensive leadership training having attended and completed the FBI Command College, UNC School of Government’s Effective Supervisory Management Program, and the UNC School of Government’s Leadership Fellows Program. Adams also holds significant certifications including an Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate, Firearms Instructor, and Subject Control and Arrest Techniques Instructor

A tremendous increase in Traffic occurs on Friday – Saturday and Sunday nights. Please remember the times- Monday – Friday----5:30 until 9:30 PM; Saturday and Sunday 5:30 until 11:00 PM. Lights will go off regardless of the number of cars in line. All Christmas Lights in the common areas of town are on timers, which turn the lights on and off at pre-set times. Respect Private Residents- Walking is a great way to see the Christmas lights, the decorated homes and to hear the sounds of the church chimes. However, when walking through, please stay on the sidewalks and never go in the yards or on porches of our residents. The decorated homes are private residences, please be respectful while walking. Through Questions and Answers How much does it cost- The light display is free, no cost whatsoever. Where can I park and what is the cost- There are four parking areas in town; A parking lot is located behind the McAdenville Baptist Church/Caromont Clinic. Another lot is located on Poplar Street, behind the small business area of town. A large parking lot is located beside the lake in the heart of Christmas Town. A parking lot beside the McAdenville Elementary School is a great place to park for those entering from US Highway 29-74. Feel free to park at any of four locations at no cost. How long is the route thru Christmas Town- The route is approximately 1.3 miles long, on weekends it may take 30-45 minutes to drive the full route, most weeknights it will take less time. Entrance and Exit Points- There is only one route through Christmas Town. If you enter town from Interstate 85, once you get to the town limits, continue through town until you reach U.S. Highway 29-74. At this point you will leave Christmas Town. If you enter town from U.S. 29-74 (coming from the Charlotte area) continue through town until you reach Interstate 85. At this point you will leave Christmas Town . Are hayrides permitted- Yes, however, the wagon etc. used for the hayrides must be pulled by a Motor Vehicle. Animals pulling Wagons, Horseback Riding etc. are not permitted on the Christmas Town Route. Are the light turned on in Inclement weather- Yes, more then 30 timers throughout town turn the lights on and off regardless of the weather conditions. I have a dog, are animals allowed to walk thru Christmas Town with their owner? Yes, however, all animals must be on a leash and controlled by their owner.

Readers Theater - Bob’s Your Elf Gaston County resident Eleanor Wixson recently approached the Friends of the Gaston County Public Library (FGCPL) with an interesting proposal. She wanted to have a readers theater, and she wanted to do it so anyone in the community could experience it for free. A readers theater is a dramatic presentation of a written work in a script form. Readers read from a script and character

Light Up Lowell 2017 The City of Lowell will have its annual Light Up Lowell holiday event on Saturday, Dec. 9 from 2-5:30pm. Holiday music will be provided by Roger Waters. There will be local vendors, bounce houses, food trucks, and kids’ activities. Also a visit from Santa. The Lowell Christmas parade will be at 3pm, followed by tree lighting ceremony at 5pm.

Both members of the Cramerton Board of Commissioners and staff expressed their congratulations to Chief Ratchford for receiving the award and their gratitude for his distinguished and positive service to the Police Department, the Town of Cramerton and its citizens. Upon the announcement of Adams as Interim Police Chief, retiring Police Chief Greg Ratchford said, “Having hired and trained Brad, I am extremely proud of his accomplishments both within the department and in furthering his formal education while he has been at Cramerton. I know he will run the department with a sense of pride for the organization, care for its members, and commitment of continued excellent service to the residents and visitors to both Cramerton and McAdenville.”

Jazz series starts Dec. 10th Elements of Empowerment, Inc., in partnership with Belmont Abbey College, will present the first of three Community Jazz Series concerts on Sunday, December 10. The series will accomplish several goals for the organization and the college: Execute Elements of Empowerment mission to foster cultural awareness, acceptance, and preservation by educating, enriching, and, empowering communities through artistic cultural programs, presentations, and events. Build a relationship between Belmont Abbey College and the Belmont community. Increase awareness of the educational opportunities at Belmont Abbey College. MHFD and MHPD taking part in Toys for Tots The Mount Holly Fire Department is joining forces with the Gaston County Firefighters Association and the United States Marine Reserves to do the Toys for Tots program. Belmont Historical Society Christmas Open House The Belmont Historical Society will host its annual Christmas Open House on Sunday, December 10th from 2:00-4:00pm. The Belmont Community Organization helps hundreds and hundreds of folks each year with basic needs such as food, power bill payments, clothes, school supplies, and yes, Virginia, Christmas gifts. Now, it’s time for Belmont to pitch in with donations to the BCO’s Christmas from the Heart Fundraiser. “It’s amazing how generous the people of Belmont are,” says BCO director Paula Wilkerson. The fundraiser will help finance the $70,000 or so that the BCO will likely need in the coming year. Donations can be for any amount. Companies can do matching gift amounts, folks can donate in Honor Of or In Memory Of a loved one or friend. Donations are tax deductible. To find out more about donating, call the BCO at 704-825-4526. Here’s a quick rundown of what BCO donations were used for fiscal year 2016-2017. Helped 1,255 families with food, furniture, and household items; 155 children in 75 families were adopted for Christmas gifts through the Angel Tree Program; 105 children in 54 families started school with new backpacks filled with supplies; 35 elderly clients were treated to a fully cooked Thanksgiving meal delivered to their homes by BCO volunteers; at Christmas those same clients received holiday gift bags filled with seasonal treats and

East Gaston girls roll past Piedmont Community Charter 50-36 By John Wilson john.bannernews@gmail.com

The East Gaston Lady Warriors basketball team got their first win of the year last week when they downed the Piedmont Community Charter Lady Patriots 50-36. EG jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead. AJ Price put the Lady Warriors up 8-0 at 5:12. In the beginning of the game the Lady Warriors did a good job controlling the boards. Defensively, the East Gaston pressured the PCC offense and limited the Lady Patriots. The PCC didn’t score their first points until the 2:50 mark. The first PCC points were back-to-back 3-pointers that put the score at 10 to 6 in East Gaston favor. For the remainder of the evening the Lady Patriots went to the perimeter. It was something EG needed to contend with. From the outset East Gaston did a good job shutting down the Lady Patriots inside game. To make up for that PCC let loose from three-point range. The strategy yielded limited results. At the end of the first the Lady Warriors are up 16 to 8. In the second period, two offensive philosophies were at work. EG did its best to work under the boards and in the paint. The Lady Warriors utterly controlled the inside game. The Lady Patriots on the other hand went a different route. PCC worked the perimeter coupled with straight up drives to the basket. In the second PCC made up some ground with two minutes left in the half the Lady Warriors held on to a slim 22-19 lead.

In the final two minutes of the half EG did what it could to fend off the Lady Patriots. The half ended with PC hitting a foul shot. Both squads went into halftime with East Gaston still up 24-20. Piedmont Community Charter opened up the second half with another blistering 3 point field goal. That “3” closed the gap to one point. However, East Gaston wasted no time in responding. The Lady Warriors poured in four points in less than a minute. When Zhariyah Hall drove in a layup she put the Warriors up 28-23. After Hall’s lay up the dam broke and EG went on a tear. East Gaston worked work hard to get points on the board and shut down the Lady Patriots. With five minutes left in the period EG had worked their way to a double-digit 34-23 lead. The Lady Warriors definitely found their rhythm in the third. East Gaston continued to score points and stuff the PCC inside game. The tough play under the boards was fueled by the play of 5’10” freshman Makayla Boyd who had 20 rebounds. With Boyd under the boards EG started to keep an eye on PCC players who floated out to the perimeter looking for shots. Shots that had been open earlier were now starting to dry up. The Lady Warriors went into the final period of the game with the 42-27 lead. The 4th period started with both units trying to get moving. Almost two minutes had gone by before Price sunk hit one of two free throws.

Price would end the game with 19 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. In the 4th the Lady Patriots went back to the perimeter in an attempt to get back in it. PCC made some progress, but not as much as they needed. By now the Lady Warriors had gotten wise to the 3 point shenanigans. PCC passes intended for the perimeter were now being intercepted or broken up with increased frequency. Piedmont Community Charter managed to cut the lead to 10 before EG shut it all down. The Lady Warriors held on for the 50-36 win. The first win of the year is definitely a big deal. For new head coach Robert Hollis it’s his first win as East Gaston’s new skipper. There is still much to be done. However this win is a good place to start. “I think we played really hard,” Hollis said. “I think that’s all we can ask of a team.” Hollis is still trying to play catch-up. He didn’t take the helm of the girls’ basketball program till mid October. Right now, East Gaston is tweaking things and trying to figure out what will work for them. In many ways they’re going through the experimentation process. Eventually they hope to find the right combination of players. “I thought we played very well,” Hollis said. “We just came into this lineup. We started two sophomores, two freshmen, and a senior. It was the first time we went with that lineup.” Coach Hollis is thrilled to be working with the Lady Warriors. “I’m excited to be in Gaston County,” he added.

Not matter what we may say, we all enjoy getting gifts for Christmas. However, the most precious gift we can receive is not some material possession, it is our Lord Jesus Christ. Matthew 2:12 records the story of the wise men who visit the young child Jesus, and His mother. In this story we know so well, the wise men came from the east seeking the newborn king who was prophesied to come to Israel. They followed the star which lead them to the house where Jesus was. Once there, they came and worshipped the young child, presenting Him three gifts, gold, frankincense, and myrrh. These gifts brought by the wise men were no mere gifts. These gifts bore spiritual significance. The gold they brought represented royalty. In the days of Jesus, gold was something reserved for people of power and status, especially the kings of the day. Jesus Christ was born a king. He fulfilled the prophecy of the coming king who would sit upon the throne of King David. Jesus Christ came to earth as a king, and one day He will return as a king. The wise men also brought frankincense, which was an incense that was an ingredient in the incense burned in the temple to worship God. Jesus was born a king, as a man, yet He also is God. Jesus is the second Person of the Trinity, the Son of God. Finally, the wise men brought myrrh, which was a perfume used to embalm the dead. Jesus came to earth to be a sacrifice. He came to die for us, in our place. Jesus, as these gifts reflect, was indeed king, God, and sacrifice. Jesus Christ is the greatest gift that has ever been given. Jesus came for us, so that we might be with Him one day in heaven. What will we do with Jesus today? No gift that goes unopened is useful to its owner. Will we receive the gift of Jesus? Will we open the Bible today and trust in the words of Christ? If you have received Jesus Christ, I encourage you to

regift this Christmas. We usually think of regifting as something we do not do. In this case, we need to regift Jesus Christ. We have this precious gift that someone loved us enough to give to us. Will we give this gift to someone who needs Jesus this Christmas season? There is no greater gift you will ever give. It is of eternal significance. Jesus is the gift that keeps on giving!

Twelve years ago I visited Cedar Grove United Methodist Church in Cedar Grove, NC. It was a weeklong training in planting community gardens. Attending this training aroused my fascination in community gardens. It was at this training I was introduced to Anathoth Community Garden. Anathoth is more than planting seeds and watching vegetables grow. At the heart of Anathoth is a community recRev. Angela Pleasants onciled by the love of Jesus Christ. Anathoth Community Garden’s District mission is to cultivate peace by using Superintendent good food and sustainable agriculture of Catawba Valley to connect people with their neighbors, Methodist Churches the land, and God. Their vision was birth from tragedy. The owner of a local store was murdered. Cedar Grove UMC, a predominately white congregation, held a prayer vigil on the site of the murder. While attending the vigil, a young black woman was inspired to donate five acres of her family’s land to start a community garden. Neighbors from across the region were inspired and offered their help. Seeds were planted that day in many hearts. As a result, a community was reconciled and continues to impact their city and state. Today, the garden has expanded to include a 33-acre farm. “And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others. For God is the one who provides seed for the farmer and then bread to eat. In the same way, he will provide and increase your resources and then produce a great harvest of generosity in you. Yes, you will be enriched in every way so that you can always be generous.” II Corinthians 9:8, 1011a NLT. “God’s grace toward us reproduces his grace within us.” (John R. Stott). God’s grace is unlimited. He continually pours his love into us. As a result, we never fear running low on God’s grace. As God’s love continually flow toward us, we, in turn, can continually show graciousness toward others. What seeds are you sowing? Will you sow the seeds that will reap a harvest of God’s grace? Will you sow seeds of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control? The seeds of Anathoth Community Garden reaped a harvest of reconciliation. People of different ethnicity, age, and socioeconomic background work side by side plowing fields and hearts. It is a true picture of the body of Christ. Likewise, as we sow seeds of God’s grace we too will reap a harvest. “And when you take your gifts to those who need them, they will thank God. So two good things will result from this ministry of giving – the needs of the believers in Jerusalem will be met, and they will joyfully express their thanks to God.” II Corinthians 9:11b-12 NLT. As we give with generous hearts, we express our faith in God as the great Provider. As a result, our giving will glorify God and show that we belong to God and one another.
