WWII flier got a chance to relive the past in a B17 bomber By Alan Hodge alan,.bannernews@gmail.com
When Carol Dudley of Belmont talks about her father, 94-year-old Charles Richardson, the pride in her voice is obvious. It should be, because he flew 35 dangerous missions over Europe during WWII in a B17 Flying Fortress bomber. “He told me his faith and love of country kept him going,” Dudley says. “He helped me understand what a wonderful country we have.” Dudley says her father, who grew up in Derita and currently lives in north Charlotte, related several stories to her of narrow escapes he had in the sky during the war. “He said that one time the engines on the plane were hit and it began to go lower and lower. The crew threw everything out they could to lighten the plane. They were skimming the treetops but made it back to base. Another time he said a bomb got hung up in the plane and didn't drop so he had to crawl into the bomb bay and kick it loose while the doors were open. He could have fallen out and been killed.” Richardson recently got a chance to relive his youth by taking a flight in a restored B17 named the “Madras Maiden”. The plane belongs to the Liberty Foundation and visited Concord Airport a couple of weeks ago on a tour around the country to raise awareness of the role that the Army Air Corps played in WWII. During the war, Richardson, then just 19-years-old, served in the 8th Air Force as a B17 radio operator/gunner. His unit was the 390th Bomb Group based at Framlingham, England.

If you think that the world is all bad news, you should have been at Belmont Central Elementary last Friday where that notion was turned upside down. The event was the official dedication of a new swing set for the second and third grade classes, but the real story is how the great piece of equipment came into being. Enter fifth grader Lilly Floyd. Last year, Floyd saw that the younger kids at Belmont Central didn't have a swing set of their own so she took that concern to the next level by spearheading a fund raising and public relations campaign to rectify the situation. Over the course of several months, Floyd held a lemonade sale in her neighborhood, held a raffle, sold 1800 Boo Pops, got 400 people to play

Belmont Sports Hall of Fame Spotlight By Stan Cromlish This week's Belmont Sports Hall of Fame inductee spotlight shines on the 2011 NCHSAA State Champion South Point High School Baseball Team whose induction will occur on Tuesday, October 24, 2017. Other inductees include Stephen Cowie, Devon Lowery, and Rick Cherry. The South Point High School Red Raider baseball team has a long and storied history with State Championships in 1973, 1974, 1981, and 2011. Throughout the history of South Point High School baseball, there have been only three coaches since 1970. Phil Tate and Mickey Lineberger earned enshrinement in the Belmont Sports Hall of Fame through their leadership, and second-generation coach, Jason Lineberger is well on his way to meriting induction. Jason's indoctrination into the South Point coaching fraternity came early in life as he followed his father, Mickey, around the football and baseball fields of South Point. In 2006, Jason took over as head coach of the baseball team from his father who had ably coached the team since 1984. The education he received from Phil and Mickey has allowed him to field baseball teams consistently in contention for state championships and his 2011 team lived up to the hype. B17 BOMBER from page 1 The plane he flew the majority of his 35 missions on was named “Good Ol Yank”. Ironically, Richardson said that after he flew his last mission on Good Ol Yank, it was shot down two flights later. During his ride on Madras Maiden, Richardson recalled some of his experiences in Good Ol Yank. “Many mornings when we would take off it was so foggy you could not see the end of the runway,” he said. “Often we had to climb through the clouds to get in formation. It was very dangerous and sometimes planes would collide. Once we had an engine on fire and had to dive from 28,000 feet to 500 feet to put it out.” During the bumpy, breezy, noisy ride in Madras Maiden, Richardson also talked about how the flight made him feel to step back in time for half an hour. “It was fantastic to be in a B17 again,” he said. “I was more than happy to do my part in the war. Younger people these days don't un-
derstand what it was like to be an American then.” One of the Madras Maiden's pilots, James Hammond, said that remembering the legacy of what Richardson and thousands of other fliers did in WWII was what the tours are all about. “We want to educate the public about their sacrifices,” he said. “The men who served in these planes, as well as the men and women who built them, deserve honor.” According to Hammond, about a dozen airworthy B-17s are still flying. During WWII about 12,000 B17s were built and 4,000 were lost. To learn more about the Douglas, Georgia-based Liberty Foundation and the Madras Maiden, visit www. libertyfoundation.org. Logan Walden helped lead the East Carolina Pirates to the National Club Baseball Association national championship in 2017. Logan hit three home runs while averaging a respectable .394. In ten appearances on the mound, he carried an ERA of 0.74 which means he allowed less than one run per nine innings and had a record of 1 and 0. Logan said when talking about the 2016 team's runner-up performance and now winning the championship, "It was one of those ‘about time’ deals. We work hard every year and have high expectations. It’s a relief after being so close last year and winning it this year. But we worked really hard to get back." Logan won the National Club Baseball Association Home Run Derby in 2016, and he has one more year of eligibility at East Carolina University. Jordan Edgerton who broke South Point's career hits record is now playing for the Kansas City T-Bones of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball. In 2017, he appeared in 70 games for the T-Bones and finished with seven home runs and a respectable .255 average in 259 plate appearances. The team dealt with three losses, but none of those went to Springs, Walden, or Locklear. This pitching trio struck out 285 total batters and combined for a 1.46 ERA. In addition to earning the State 3A Baseball Championship, Jeffrey Springs garnered North Carolina 3A Player of the Year honors. Pitching and defense win many games, but the team must be able to score runs if it wants to advance far in the state playoffs. The team batting leaders compiled a .390 combined batting average with Spencer Wiles leading the team with a .441 average. Jordan Edgerton posted a respectable .373 average during the championship season. Two of the team's leading pitchers, Jeffrey Springs and Andrew Locklear, helped themselves at the plate. Jeffrey and Andrew carried averages of .405 and .343 respectively. During the state championship, Northeast Guilford entered the first contest with South Point on a 27-game winning streak. South Point took that first game 12 to 6, but Northeast Guilford came right back the next day to win 12 to 11 which set up the rubber game for the title of 2011 North Carolina State 3A Champion Baseball Team. Andrew Locklear took the mound for a decisive game three and was the winning pitcher in an 8 to 5 contest that saw 2011 baseball team claim top honors as the State Champions.

Meditations Music Fest at Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden It’s Not About Born and raised in the heart of Charlotte, Caroline Keller is southern girl with a spirit as fiery as her red hair. Keller released her first album, Queen of the Highway, at age 16, topping the Christian Country Charts and moving four songs into the top ten. Carolina remains committed to her Waxhaw church, Five Stones, where she still sings every Sunday. At the Garden she’ll be joined by her band for what promises to be a rousing show. Saturday, October 14 at 3 p.m.: Head for the Hills Hailing from Colorado and hitting the road this summer in support of their new album, Potions and Poisons released in May, Head for the Hills calls itself a post-modern bluegrass band. But make no mistake, there is nothing reinvented about their sound. The band’s four members—Adam Kinghorn, Joe Lessard, Matt Loewen and Sam Parks—have created a niche and a sound all their own. In this unusual bluegrass you’ll find delectable morsels of soul, funk and even old time. Now, after a handful of studio albums and four state bluegrass awards, the band is firing on all cylinders and appears to be headed to the peak of its success. Sunday, October 15 at 1 p.m.: Stepside Deluxe Returning are local musicians with an uncanny ability to pick you up and put you down in another place and time. Stepside Deluxe has forged a creative path in music stemming from their influences of Roots, Rockabilly and the HonkyTonk twang of Bakersfield– Nashville West. Sunday, October 15 at 3 p.m.: The Ragbirds The Ragbirds have developed a well-deserved reputation as one of the most dynamic, high-spirited live bands in roots music. Written and recorded in the wake of the birth of co-founders Erin Zindle and Randall Moore’s first child, the band’s fifth studio album The Threshold & The Hearth adds another dimension to the band’s catalog. “I’ve been traveling with bands since I was a teenager,” says Zindle, a multiinstrumentalist who doubles as the band’s chief songwriter and frontwoman. “I’ve written a lot of songs about my experiences on the road…But we’re coming home with this album. There’s still a worldly feel, but there’s also the sense that The Threshold & The Hearth is the sound we’ve been searching for. I imagined 80+ percent of maybe Kenya or Zimbabwe. The moment arrived when I received the message in my inbox. I opened it only to have the smile diminished from my face. The entire weekend I Rev. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” Psalm 139:13-14 NIV. I know what it is like to be judged by color and gender. I have felt the pain when people have left their congregation because I, a black woman, came to be their pastor. We are what we are because God intricately weaved us together in our mother’s womb. A human life is God’s handiwork. Therefore, when we judge others, we are judging the work of God. So, I have a new look today. Yes, I may be Togolese, French, German, Ivorian, Great Britain, Senegal, Nigerian, Irish, Scandinavian, Mali, Indian, Cameroon and South African, but I also know I am fearfully and wonderfully made.

Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden’s Fall 2017 Lost Hollow Music Fest will be held on Oct. 14 and 15. The two-day festival will feature five performances by a range of musicians who have put their own spin on Americana music. The festival will kick off on Saturday, Oct. 14 with Carolina Sonrise at 11 a.m. followed by Caroline Keller Band at 1 p.m. and headliner Head for the Hills at 3 p.m. The festival continues on Sunday with Stepside Deluxe at 1 p.m. and the Ragbirds at 3 p.m. The Garden is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, but please note that daytime ticket sales and entry end at 4 p.m. each day. In the midst of all of the recent tragedies our nation has experienced in the last couple of months, it has been great to see all of the outpouring of love and support people around the country have offered to their fellow citizens. As wonderful as this is, unfortunately too often we see people that are more concerned with self than others, and certainly God. Our present time is a very selfish age, as people are more concerned with how their life is impacted instead of others, and even their own families. However, life is not meant to be about us. Jonah 1-4 tells the well-known story of a man named Jonah, who God called to preach to the people of Nineveh. The city had become evil, and far away from God. Because of this, God was going to destroy the city. God in His mercy, wanted Jonah to preach to these people so they might turn to God before it was too late. Jonah did not like the Ninevites and fled from God to Tarshish by boat to avoid God’s call, yet God brought a great storm upon the water. Jonah confessed to the sailors that the storm was because he was running from God. They ultimately threw Jonah into the water, where God sent a great fish, perhaps a whale, to swallow him. In the belly of this fish he repented of his disobedience, and God delivered him onto the dry ground. Jonah went and preached, and the entire city of Nineveh turned back to God, and God relented of his judgment. Jonah was upset that God had spared the city and sat under a booth he built near the city. God raised up a plant over him to shade him from the sun, and Jonah was glad for it. The

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month: A time to remember those who have lost their lives from domestic violence, to honor survivors, and to show your support for advocates working to end the destructive cycle of domestic violence that affects the lives of so many men, women, and children. This year, The Shelter asks that you join in wearing purple on Friday, October 27th to
show your support. Remember to not just wear purple but also tell people why! Here are some facts you can share: 1 in 3 women have been victims of physical violence by an intimate partner within their lifetime;1 in 15 children are exposed to intimate partner violence each year, and 90% of these children are eyewitnesses From January-December 2016, The Shelter responded to 1,080 crisis calls; During this same time frame, The Shelter housed 165 women and 171 children. Thanks to The Rotary Club of Gastonia for placing a Rotary
Book Stop in The Shelter play yard. This is one of four locations across Gastonia. Shelter residents can read one of the many wonderful books provided and can return it after they are done for others to enjoy. Branch manager Trevor Bush presented her with a commemorative crystal cube and certificate of appreciation and the drive through where she works was decorated in her honor. Hodge began her career with Bank of Belmont in 1972. “Sharon’s outstanding career at Wells Fargo is impressive,” Bush said. “She has worked in many different capacities over the years, but always at the downtown Belmont branch. Her longevity is a great example of her dedication and commitment to the bank, as well as the Belmont community. She is a local legend whose customers appreciate and trust because each of them know they are in good hands with her. She has been a true champion and advocate for the Belmont community and her ability and eagerness to assist customers with their financial needs has been invaluable. She is also a role model for everyone she works with because she exemplifies Wells Fargo’s Vision and Values. Tuckaseegee Park in Mt. Holly has some new baseball field scoreboards funded in part by the Mt. Holly Athletic Association. The MHAA is a non-profit organization that was established by recreation coaches and community leaders to raise money that would help directly benefit the Mount Holly Parks & Recreation Department. “A while back, the MHAA raised enough money to purchase and donate two scoreboards for the baseball program,” said Connor Sisk, Mt. Holly Parks and Rec. athletic coordinator (pictured). “The City decided to then purchase a third scoreboard and covered the cost of installation. South Point blasts East Gaston on Black Friday 56-0 By John Wilson john.bannernews@gmail.com
The South Point Red Raiders and East Gaston Warriors kicked off their 2017 Southern Piedmont 2A conference football schedule by facing off against each other. Statewide realignment meant the longtime rivals were the only Gaston County schools to move from the Big South 2A/3A to the newly-formed Southern Piedmont 2A. Right now many fans probably see the new conference as just a bunch of blah-blah. For many this was East Gaston vs South Point! Nothing new here. It was Black Friday for South Point fans. For Warrior fans it was a chance to dethrone the defending state champs. When the game was over it turned out to be a black day for the Warriors. South Point won 56-0. The South Red Raiders are still undefeated at 7-0. “It was a total team win,” South Point head coach Adam Hodge said. “We played good offense, defense and special teams.” South Point got things going quickly in the early part of the 1st quarter when quarterback Scottie Lee broke free for a 58 yard touchdown run. With less than two minutes to go in the first, Lee then hit senior Ray Grier with a 22-yard touchdown pass. Grier’s first-quarter touchdown was the first of several. Grier would go on to have a very good game. “Ray Grier had a big night,” Hodge said. “He had two touchdown passes and a punt return for touchdown.” Grier finished up with 114 yards off 5 receptions. The Red Raiders were up 35 to nothing at the half. Coach Hodge started to pull starters. The move was based on sportsmanship and strategy. “We pulled people in the second half,” Hodge said. “We got to play a lot of guys. Our second and third team guys got in. We got to build a lot of depth. I’m proud of them.” Building depth will no doubt pay off down the road.

Strong performances were turned in by Scottie Lee, Jake Alexander, Keaton Hale and Ty Tinker. In the second half, the Red Raiders picked up where they left off. South Point scored 14 points in the 3rd quarter and 7 in the 4th. East Gaston had a hard time getting anything going. The Warriors had 181 yards of total offense. EG tried to find holes in the South Point defense through the air and on the ground. They only had marginal success. Junior H-back Brodie Hilton was the Warriors top runner. Hilton had 79 yards off of 13 carries and a 6.07 yard per carry average. East Gaston QB Kobe Creamer was 16 for 30 with 102 yards and a pick. EG’s top wideout was KJ Dagout with 55 yards off of nine catches. Up next for South Point will be a game against the East Rutherford Cavaliers. East Gaston will take on the Chase Trojans. Now South Point and East Gaston fans alike will fans will need to pay attention. Both squads are in the meat of the new conference schedule. See SOUTH POINT, Page 15

Both schools will start to play teams they are unfamiliar with. It’s fair to say familiarity can be an unpredictable thing. East Rutherford is 5-2. Chase is 1-6. “East Rutherford has a good team,” coach Hodge said. “Their quarterback is good. They have good linebackers and a good nose guard. They are going to challenge us a bit.” The Chase game will give the Warriors a chance to get things back on track. The South Point/East Rutherford game will be in Forest City. East Gaston will be at home for their game against the Trojans. Both games have 7:30 kick offs.

Every football program stresses how important special teams play is. For the most part the players that make up the kicking and return games go unnoticed. Many times special team players just do not get the credit they are due. When Cramer faced off against Burns it was the special teams that came through and helped the 4-3 Storm get a big 28-14 win. Burns jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead when the pulled off a huge 63 yard touchdown pass. “They scored on their first play,” Cramer head coach Ben McMillan said. “We had a coverage mix up.” The Storm were not about to let that stand. Cramer hit back with an aerial attack of their own. Before the 1st quarter ended quarterback Luke Carpenter hit Kendall Karr with a 21-yard touchdown strike. The score was tied up 7-7 going into the 2nd quarter. In the 2nd quarter both defenses dug in. Neither side was able to put points on the board before half-time. The half ended in a defensive stalemate. Both squads hit the locker room with the score 7-7. “We went back and forth in the first half,” McMillan said. In the second half things got interesting. The Cramer special teams were about to catch fire. Denorrian Lindsay took the Burns kickoff and returned it 85 yards for a touchdown. Cramer was changing the dynamics of the game. “The special teams made some huge plays in the second half,” McMillan went on to say. “We returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown and then blocked a punt for a touchdown.” The blocked punt came shortly after Burns responded to the kick off TD with a 3-yard touchdown run of their own. With the score tied up 14-14, Kaiser Kayton broke through the Burns line and blocked the punt. Kayton then picked the ball up and ran 30 yards for a Cramer touchdown. Just as Cramer was not about to give up, neither was Burns. Burns quickly struck back with a touchdown run to put the score at 21-21 at the end of the 3rd quarter. In the 4th quarter the Cramer running game took its turn at making things happen. “Tyreese Morris had 85-yard touchdown run in the fourth,” McMillan added. After the Morris run the Storm was up 28-21. Up to then both teams had played very hard. It was now going to be a matter of who wanted it more, the Bulldogs or the Storm. Cramer tried to run the clock out. As for Burns, they planned on scoring again to tie the game up or possibly go ahead for the win. The do-or-die moment came in the final minutes. “We had a big stand on fourth and two on our thirty yard line at around three minutes,” Coach McMillan went on. “Then we ran the clock out.” Statistically both teams were evenly matched on offense. Cramer had 272 yards of offense. Burns had 251. Cramer’s top running back was Tyreese Morris who had 144 yards off of 16 carries.

Luke Carpenter threw the ball efficiently. He was 6 for 11 for 69 yards with one TD. Once again senior linebacker Robert Truesdale led the defense in tackles. Truesdale finished the game with 13 stops. Truesdale also added a sack to his resume. The Storm had a total of four sacks against the Bulldogs. Other defenders that had good games were John Griffin and Devan Polk. Both had 10 tackles. Polk also had a sack. The Bulldogs went into the Cramer game having only won once. They turned out to be scrappy. “They did not play like a 1-5 team,” McMillan said of Burns. “They played very well.” Next for Cramer will be a trip to Dallas to take on the 2-5 North Gaston Wildcats.
