“It's a very forward-looking project.” That's what Cramerton's planning director Josh Watkins had to say about the plan to establish a network of bicycle-friendly routes and and trails in and around the town. The idea to make Cramerton a place where folks could ride bikes for transportation and recreation goes back a couple of years, but a newly completed 139-page study on the subject has really gotten things rolling in that direction. It was created in response to a request from the NCDOT for pedestrian and bicycle grant applications. It was funded through the North Carolina Department of Transportation Bicycle and Pedestrian Planning Grant Initiative. The plan was crafted by a steering committee, town officials, and citizen input. AECOM Technical Services of North Carolina was the consultant. The steering committee came up with the following vision statement -“The Town of Cramerton will be a place accessible to bicyclists of all ages, abilities, and diverse backgrounds with convenient access to bicycle facilities and programs that promote: active living and well being, safety, connectivity, and celebration and discovery of Cramerton’s rich culture and history.” Watkins says the plan will be presented on Sept. 6 to the Gaston County Board of Commissioners for their approval. Watkins says that would give the plan extra credibility
when it comes time to apply for other grants. Watkins is eager to get the wheels turning on making the plan a physical reality. “We don't want it to sit on the shelf,” he said. “The goal is to have the plan in place in a year or two.” The plan offers a number of ideas for making Cramerton a safe and fun place to bike. “Projects include shared lane markings and bicycle lanes,” the plan reads. “Linear facility recommendations emphasized connections between downtown Cramerton outward to locations like the Market Street shopping plazas and neighboring Belmont. Key corridors for linear facilities include the following: Eighth Avenue connecting downtown to Market Street and Eagle Road connecting to neighboring Belmont. A bicycle lane is recommended for the east side of Eighth Avenue while sharrows are recommended for the west side. Along Eagle Road, it is recommended sharrows be added with bike lanes to follow if the roadway is widened. Sharrows were also recommended along Market Street and Mayflower Avenue.” Watkins believes riders could use their bikes not just for recreation, but for other purposes as well. “They could ride to the shops and restaurants in the downtown area,” he said. “We want to offer residents as many types of transportation as possible. By Mary Smith Since last fall, the Mount Holly Strategic Vision Plan Project Team, working in conjunction with Arnett Muldrow & Associates have been working diligently analyzing the results from the nearly 550 completed surveys and incorporating feedback based on meetings with citizens, local business owners, and community organizations. The Strategic Vision Plan Update project has its roots in the Vision Process of 2003 that laid the framework of many of the City’s accomplishments over the past decade. By Art Shoemaker Matthew Theodhos Jonas came to America as an eighteen month old boy from his native country of Vlora, Albania. A young lady from Stanley, Donna Jonas, had considered adopting a child. Marriage was not in her plans, however, she had a strong desire to enjoy and provide a good Christian home life for a youngster. After much prayer, thought, study and guidance Donna made the decision to begin the adoption process. Donna was aware of an adoption agency called Southern Piedmont Adoptive Families Association that deals in international adoption and that was the direction she chose for adoption. The adoption process took about 13 months and the adoption agency had a formula to determine her eligibility for adopting a child. Issues such as health checks, home studies and countless hours of filling out required forms were necessary. After all of these requirements were met Donna was put in touch with International Children’s Alliance in Washington, D.C. This agency sent Donna videos of several children from various countries. When she viewed the video of Dosi she knew that this was the child that God had chosen to be her son. In September of 2001, Donna and her dad, Bud Jonas, flew to Albania to meet Dosi and to begin the legal part of the adoption process. They were fortunate on this trip to meet some missionaries who helped them through customs and other issues to enter Albania. See DOSI page 3

At this time Dosi was 18 months old and living at the Vlora Baby House. When Donna and her father Bud saw Dosi it was love at first sight. They were able to spend private time with Dosi and meet his caregivers. They also had to go through the process that Albania requires for an adoption to take place. Albania requires two trips to complete an adoption and as Donna and Bud were preparing to return to America on September 11, 2001, the World Trade Center tragedy occurred. This required the Jonas’s to spend another week in Albania before returning home. This extra week gave Donna more time to spend with Dosi and with much emotion she recalls rocking Dosi to sleep singing “God Bless America”. About a month after returning home Donna returned to Albania accompanied by her best friend Debbie Adams to bring Dosi home. Debbie and her husband Chris are Dosi’s very special Godparents. Matthew Theodhos Jonas officially arrived home in Charlotte, N.C. on October 17, 2001. Donna originally planned to name him Matthew Donald Jonas but she discovered that Theodhos meant “Gift from God” therefore Donald was removed and replaced by Theodhos. The Jonas family first called him Matt and Theo but got no response from Dosi. Donna remembered that the ladies at the orphanage called him Theo Dosi and when they used this name he responded quickly. This was shortened to Dosi and he has been called this his whole life, Donna works for Bank of America in Charlotte and she and Dosi lived in the Queen City until Dosi was five. When it was time for school, Donna decided to move back to her hometown of Stanley so Dosi could grow up in a small town environment. Dosi recalls that his first memory involving sports was playing T-Ball at 4 years old for Coach Vic Beatty. Later he played soccer, football, basketball and baseball in Stanley recreation leagues and also at Stanley Middle School. Long-time Stanley recreation director, Tug Deason, remembers Dosi as a team first player. He recalls he also gave his best and excelled at all the youth programs available to him. When it was time to enter East Gaston High School, Dosi decided to focus on the sport that he enjoyed mostbaseball. This sport not only was the one that he was best at but from an early age his grandfather, Bud Jonas, had spent many hours working with Dosi on the finer points of the game. Bud had been an outstanding baseballer back in the 1950’s when all the mills fielded a team. Early

(Grandfather). Jonas family photos on, Bud saw Dosi’s potential in this sport and Dosi was always willing to learn and quickly developed a love for baseball. At East Gaston Dosi quickly became a standout shortstop for the Warriors. In the Big South 3A Conference, Dosi was a several times All-Conference selection as an infielder. In both his Junior and Senior seasons he was selected as the best offensive player on the East Gaston team. East Gaston head baseball coach, Randy Sellers, commented that Dosi always played with much intensity and displayed a coachable attitude at all times. He added that he has all the tools necessary to continue to grow as a successful athlete and young man. Kenneth Pasour, a member of the baseball coaching staff at both East Gaston and the Gaston Braves feels that Dosi will continue his baseball success at Spartanburg Methodist as he begins his collegiate career. Coach Pasour points out that Dosi possesses speed, hits with power and is outstanding defensively. Pasour feels that with continued improvement, hard work and a break or two along the way Dosi has the potential to play at the professional level. Jeff Gibson, who for many years has been the athletic director for the Gaston Braves legion baseball team states that Dosi ranks with the best that has ever come through this program. He bases this on the fact that Dosi hit at a .479 clip this past season which is the top average recorded by a Gaston Braves player in the 22 year history of the program. Not only did Dosi excel on the diamond at East Gaston, he graduated 39th in his class this past spring with a 3.75 GPA. It appears that he is well prepared to perform academically at Spartanburg Methodist. In summary, Matthew Theodhos “Dosi” Jonas is headed to the top both athletically and academically as he heads off to college. Thanks to the outpouring of love and direction from grandparents Bud and Pansy and mother Donna Jonas, Dosi could not be more prepared as he continues his reach for the stars.

were selected at that time. During the week of October 9, 2017, the City and our Project Team, consisting of Tripp Muldrow of Arnett Muldrow & Associates, Tom McGilloway and Jeff Dube of Mahan Rykiel Urban Design and Landscape and Mark Teague of JM Teague Transportation Engineering, hosted three days of meetings beginning on Tuesday with a Steering Committee meeting, a downtown building and key property owner meeting, and a well-attended Public Involvement Meeting with over 60 guests in attendance. Next, the Project Team and staff hosted a roundtable discussion with merchants representing nine different businesses. Tripp Muldrow actually visited many more business owners in the afternoon who were unable to attend the earlier meeting. Several businesses participated in a zip code tracking programthat was utilized for market and data collection. A transportation-focused roundtable meeting was held with reps from NCDOT, the Gaston Cleveland Lincoln MPO, KimleyHorn and the Carolina Thread Trail. The Project Team also hosted members of the Parks and Recreation Commission, staff members Mark Jusko and Conner Sisk, representatives from the NC Forest Service/Mountain Island State Educational Forest, Catawba Lands Conservancy/Carolina Thread Trail, the Foundation & Mount Holly FROGS (Friends of the Greenway) and the Gaston Family YMCA. In other meetings, attendees included Donny Hicks, Director of the Gaston County EDC, Mark Cramer, Director of the Greater Gaston Development Corporation, Brad Rivers, Small Business Center Gaston College, Jennifer Stanton, Retail Advisory Services, Sam Kline, Broker Caldwell Banker Commercial MECA, David Williams, Gaston County Planning & Business Services Director, and Reeves McGlohon, President of the Gaston Regional Chamber. Feedback collected from all these interested parties resulted in a few common themes: Retaining small-town character is paramount to both new and long-time Mount Holly; citizens and business owners; The healthy and collaborative climate of local businesses and organizations, and their ability to synergize efforts on a variety of programs or promotional concepts with the City, sets it apart from other municipalities; Connecting the “dots” or places of business, parks and destination points, together, making them more walkable is desired; Planned growth, as compared to a “Grow as You Go” approach, that dictates standards for residential and commercial development. Last November, the Project
Team held a Public Involvement Meeting at Municipal Complex. This was the culmination of a series of meetings, including a corporate citizen roundtable meeting a meeting with the Foundation Board, a meeting with Downtown/ Downtown Gateway pastors and/or church representatives, another transportation meeting with area stakeholders and the Steering Committee meeting. At the public involvement meeting, Tripp Muldrow presented some initial findings to the 40 attendees. At the January 2018 work session, Tripp Muldrow presented the market study to City Council, which will be incorporated into the Plan and an update to the survey that was sent out to the public.

ning Commission, and Mayor and Council, the Strategic Vision Plan, adopted in May 2008, utilized the Vision Process by placing core goals and objects into a formalized, comprehensive 5-Phase Plan. Some highlights of this plan included prioritizing economic development, a $5 million bond referendum, creation of the Mount Holly Community Development Foundation as a 501(c)(3) by core participants of the Vision Process, onset of the Downtown Streetscape Project and the Linear Park Project, the unveiling of Mount Holly’s revamped brand, logo, and tagline featured on new wayfinding and gateway signage, and the creation of the Greenway Master Plan. In January 2016, City staff began the process for an update to the original Strategic Vision Plan. The original plan was intended to be updated every five to seven years. A Selection Committee, followed by an approval from City Council, was utilized to select Arnett Muldrow & Associates as the most-qualified firm for the project in April 2017, wishing to begin the project near the beginning of the 2017 fiscal year. On August 29, 2017, the City hosted the Steering Committee Kickoff Meeting for the Strategic Vision Plan Update Project, marking an important milestone in this project’s history. Tripp Muldrow of Arnett Muldrow & Associates, the lead firm on this project, was joined by Tom McGilloway of Mahan Rykiel out of Baltimore, MD, and Reuben Moore of JM Teague Transportation Engineering out of Waynesville, NC. The Steering Committee members in attendance included Councilman Perry Toomey, Councilman David Moore, City Manager Danny Jackson, Planning staff members Brian DuPont, Jonathan Wilson and Michael Butler, Billy Rick, James Allen, Angie Saunders, Sam Kline, Jennifer Stanton, Jeff Lee, Planning Commission members Will Crist and Leroy Thorns. Wendy Foster and Jason Shoemaker are also on the Steering Committee, but they each had other commitments. Tripp Muldrow led the meeting by covering the approved scope of work. There were a couple Steering Committee meetings in early spring, and due to some scheduling conflicts with the Project Team, the City initiated a re-launch of the project to re-engage the public in early May 2018. This initiative resulted in an additional 60 survey responses to help the City surpass its goal of 500 responses (a total of 543 surveys were collection) and after closing the survey, data collection and laying out the guiding document began. After another Steering Committee meeting, a Council presentation and update and a Public Involvement Meeting with 50 attendees, all of which took place in early July, City Planning staff have held weekly conference calls and meetings with the Project Team to develop a document to bring to City Council for review and feedback. This document includes chapters dedicated to the Small Area Plans for the SouthGateway, the Woods and Waters District and the Downtown and Riverfront. After stressing that the survey findings and feedback given from hundreds of residents and stakeholders, Arnett Muldrow has tied the Strategic Vision Plan Update to six core values, which are the following: “Preserve and Enhance Small Town Character”;“Continue to Connect the Downtown Core”; “Improve Connections Throughout City”;“Increase Vibrancy through Art and Placemaking” “Enhance Gateways and First Impressions”; “Advance the Legacy of Visionary Leadership”. The last core value was added by the consultants because, as noted in its description, “Mount Holly’s public and private sector leadership has a proven record of responsiveness to its citizens,
advancing proactive efforts to improve the community, being sensitive to the needs of stakeholders, and responding to dynamic changes inherent to being part of a growing metropolitan area.” Transportation, being a major theme of the Plan, will have its own dedicated chapter with a focus on vehicles, pedestrian and bicycle, blueways (kayaking, paddling), transit and gateway enhancements. There will also be chapters dedicated to Art and Placemaking, Annexation Strategies, Marketing Recommendations, Celebrating Past Accomplishments, and a new Implementation Plan. The next step is to have a draft of the document completed for review by the Mayor and Council, which will include a detailed matrix of plan goals and future projects; that matrix will detail the who (private, public or both/partnership; think of project lead), what (details of project), when (immediate, intermediate or long-range priority), where (the project location or area) and why (what core values does the project meet or accomplish; basis of recommendation). Last week, Planning staff met with JM Teague Engineering, the transportation and planning consultants for the Plan, to go over several potential project sites (i.e. sidewalk, blueway or greenway locations) to ensure they are feasible and grounded in reality. Citizens are encouraged to stay tuned for further updates on this exciting stage of the City’s development and growth.
Reed Gold Mine 29th Annual Pan-O-Lympics is Sept. 8th Folks from across the state will be searching for gold in them hills at Reed Gold Mine Saturday, Sept. 8. The 29h Annual Pan-O-Lympics, also known as the North Carolina Open Gold Panning Competition, will be underway. There will be fun, prizes and activities for young and old. Experienced gold panners and novices will compete for speed along historic Little Meadow Creek, site of the first documented gold discovery in the U.S. Competitors will be issued gravity trap pans containing sand and four gold nuggets. They must remove as much sand as possible and leave all four nuggets and face penalties if nuggets are missing. The Pro and Amateur Division each will have an adult and junior (14 and under) category. Entry fees are $15 for adult and $10 for junior categories. The Amateur division fees are $5 for adults and juniors. Pros are contestants who have competed in any panning competition during the previous two years. Fees can be paid in advance or on the day of competition. The Amateur division practice and competition will be between 10 a.m. and noon, while the Professional Division practice and competition will start at 1 p.m. and end at 3 p.m. Proceeds from the Pan-O-Lympics benefit the Reed Expansion Committee, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving Reed Gold Mine State Historic Site and North Carolina’s gold mining history. Free activities will include guided underground tours, demonstrations of the 1895 stamp mill which crushed ore to extract gold, and an orientation film and visitor center exhibits. Panning will be available for $3.21 (tax included) for everyone ages 8 and older. Reed Gold Mine State Historic Site is part of the N.C. Division of State Historic Sites. Reed Gold Mine preserves the site of the first documented discovery of gold in the United States. Restored mine tunnels are shown to visitors by interpreters who share the story of that first discovery and the work of the miners to retrieve gold from the creek bed and from solid rock. Reed Gold mine further interprets the history of North Carolina’s mining heritage through exhibits, special events and off-site presentations. Panning for gold is a popular hands-on activity in warm months. The grant will go to the Stanley Volunteer Fire Department in Gaston County, and comes in the fifth round of the 2017 fiscal year Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program (AFG), which aims to help firefighters and first responders throughout the country. Local departments applied for the grants, and the program is administered by the Grant Programs Directorate of the Federal Emergency Management Agency in cooperation with the U.S. Fire Administration. According to Stanley Fire Chief Will Keller, the grant funds will be used to purchase 23 new sets of self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) air packs. These will replace older air packs that are at the end of their useful life and upgrade them to new ones that meet all of the latest protection standards. “Stanley is a great town that is growing and emergency services must have the equipment to keep up with the challenges posed by that growth,” said Congressman McHenry. “I visited Chief Keller and his department for an opioid awareness event earlier this year and I look forward to returning to recognize this significant accomplishment on their part.” A panel of fire experts at DHS awards AFG grants through a competitive review process. Congressman McHenry hosts workshops for 10th District EMS and fire departments to help guide personnel through the process and give them an inside view of what the committee looks for. The workshops are taught by Cherryville Fire Chief Jeff Cash, a nationally recognized expert in his field and former member of DHS’s AFG review committee. Since Congressman McHenry and Chief Cash began the program, 10th District EMS and fire departments have consistently won more grants than departments in most of North Carolina’s other Congressional Districts. Stanley is the first 10th District department to receive AFG funding thus far during the 2017 cycle. Grants will continue to be announced in rounds weekly through the coming months.

The end times
The Gaston County Republican Party officially opened its 2018 elections headquarters on Saturday, marking the beginning of the 2018 election cycle. In attendance were dozens of volunteers, party leaders, local elected officials, and state officials, including North Carolina Republican Party Vice Chairman Michele Nix, who traveled from Lenoir County, NC to attend the ceremony as a sign of support from the NCGOP. The new GOP headquarters will be open Tuesday through Friday from 10am until 6pm, and Saturdays from 10am until 4pm. The public can pick up yard signs, campaign materials, or take advantage of volunteer opportunities for the party and its candidates. I’m Sorry Of all of the things we say to others, perhaps nothing is any more difficult than saying I’m sorry to someone we have hurt in some way. We can complement, and curse, yet telling someone we are sorry for what we have done is so hard. Often we speak of repentance Rev. In other words, to repent means salvationchurchnc@gmail.com to say to God, “I’m sorry.” 2 Samuel 12:1-15 tells of an encounter King David had with the prophet Nathan. David, a man after God’s own heart, had sinned greatly. He had an encounter with a married woman Bathsheba, had her husband Uriah killed to cover up the sin, and then married her. All seemed to be hidden until Nathan came to visit the king. Nathan told David of a rich man who had flocks, herds, and everything he needed, and a poor man who only had one little lamb. The rich man took the poor man’s lamb to serve to a visitor who had come by. David was enraged by the rich man’s behavior until Nathan reminded him that he was the man who had everything, and took the one thing the poor man had, his wife. Nathan then reminded David he would face judgment from God. David confessed his sin before God, and God put away his sin. This event reminds us that we all sin and fail God. Even a man so godly as David was, failed God miserably. The Bible reminds us that we all will fail. We have a sin nature, and yield to temptation. Like David, we cannot hide our sin from God. David thought he could escape his sin by having Uriah killed while also claiming his wife. However, God was watching as Nathan reminded him that day. David humbled himself, and repented to God of his terrible sins. When we sin, we must also humble ourselves and confess our sins to God. As David confessed his sin to God, Nathan said to him “The Lord also has put away your sin” (2 Samuel 12:13, NKJV). Even with such terrible sin and actions, God forgave David and put his sin away forever. Just the same, when we sin, God puts our sins away. Our sins are covered in the blood of Jesus Christ. Although our sins are forgiven, there are still consequences. David did not just hurt himself in his sins, but his family as well. In the process of time, three of his sons died, and his kingdom was jeopardized. We do not sin in a vacuum, and our sins hurt not only us, but others too. We must remember however, that we cannot change our pasts, including our sins, yet we can shape our future. No matter what we have done, we can start over in Jesus Christ. For us, that begins by saying simply to God when we fail Him, “I’m sorry.” During your daily Bible readings, read Psalm 51, as David wrote to God telling him how sorry he was for his sins, seeking His forgiveness.

I remember my conversation with my dad the day before he died. It was Rev. Angela Pleasants a great conversation. I also remember District my life with him. It was not perfect, Superintendent but it was fulfilling with no regrets. of Catawba Valley I have a friend who has months to Methodist Churches live. As we talk by phone, we laugh over our times together, and we talk about the meaning of life. Due to lung disease, my dad knew his earthly time would come to an end, but he did not know when. My friend knows he has months, but he does not know the day. We all live with a sense of finality. Unless we have been given a diagnosis, we don’t like to think about that time. There is another end we do not think about, or we overthink about it. There is much thoughtful attention to the end times. We look at all that is happening in our world and Christians say, “Jesus must be coming soon.” There have been some throughout history who have tried to decipher from the scriptures the exact date only to lead people astray. Scripture does speak to such a time and affirm the promises of God. But, it does not talk specifically to any date when this will happen. There may be signs that we see pointing to such times, but no one knows the day or hour. It is not for us to know the date when that will happen. That is for God alone. “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away. But of that day and hour, no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone.” Matthew 24:35-36 NASB. I believe we experience this general indication as a time for us not to guess specific dates, but for us to prepare our hearts. As a pastor, I have the privilege of being in places that most do not experience on a daily basis. I have been at the bedside of many and watching as they draw their last breath. I have witnessed some amazing God moments as people transitioned from this life. Sitting with these individuals and their family, I often hear stories of a life well lived. And, sometimes I listen to regrets. Regrets of not forgiving loved ones, not saying, “I love you,” not taking enough time with family. Whether you are consumed with end times, or not wanting to think about it at all, there will come a time for us all. The question is not when it will come, but how are you living your life in the present? God reveals to us glimpses of what the end time will look like only to encourage us in the present. It is for us to develop godly perseverance even in the midst of difficulty. Our end may be before Christ comes or when he comes. I am not so much concerned about that time, for I know the end of the story. I am concerned how I live now. Yes, I am waiting with expectation and zeal. But, I know I am also a workmanship of God created for good works. God calls us to be the vessel through which others come to know his grace. “Now in a large house, there are not only gold and silver vessels, but also vessels of wood and of earthenware, and some to honor and some to dishonor. Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from these things, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified, useful to the Master, prepared for every good work.” II Timothy 2: 20-21 NASB. Just as there is preparation in using utensils for noble purpose, we too must prepare. We prepare by allowing our hearts to be cleansed by the Spirit of God and set apart for God’s use. In Christ, we are destined for noble purposes. Therefore, we live each day of our life where our faith expresses itself in tangible ways. “So when they had come together, they were asking Him, saying, ‘Lord, is it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?’ He said to them, ‘It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority; but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses.’” Acts 1:6-8a NASB. As you live in the present, pray that God will show his power through you as you witness and serve in his name.

The City of Mt. Holly swore in four firefighters at last week’s council meeting Patrick Mayhew was born and raised in Huntersville North Carolina. He a fireman because he wanted to follow in his father‘s footsteps. He loves the job and feels that it’s a great way to help the community. Mayhew is seen with dad Terry and mom Beverly. Crews were putting the final touches last week on a series of crosswalks on Main St. in downtown Belmont. The crosswalks are configured to look like bricks and bright NCDOT crosswalk signs were also put in place. The speed limit is 20mph on Main St. in the downtown area just in case anyone has forgotten. Mt. Holly Summer Concert series with Continental Divide The City of Mount Holly continues with their 2018 Summer Concert Series, featuring multiple concerts offered each month. Johnny B’s Beach & Boogie has returned as the event DJ for each concert. The series runs through October 5 and is free to residents and visitors. Continental Divide, featuring Gene Pharr, will perform on the Mount Holly stage on Friday, August 31 from 7 - 10 PM. This band has been playing in the Southeast for over thirty years. Lead singer Gene Pharr was inducted into the Carolina Beach Music Hall of Fame in 2016. According to their website, “From the silky smooth voice of Gene Pharr, to the tightness of the rhythm section, to the flowing lines of the horn section, they put on a performance everyone will remember.”

Gavin McCaslin says that halfway through high school, he wasn’t sure what career path he wanted to take. He joined Union Road Volunteer Fire Department in August of 2014, and ever since then it is something he’s enjoyed. He feels being able to serve a community and make a difference is what makes this the best job in the world. Kyle Brown has been around fire service all his life due to his father spending 36 years at Charlotte Fire. Kyle joined the Air Force in 2004. After six years there he decided to join the fire service myself due to the command structure and being a paramilitary organization. Brown is seen with wife Mikala, and kids Kaiden and Khloe.
Chris Ohlin was born and grew up in Chicago IL. It wasn’t until he was in his earlier 20s that he knew he wanted to be a firemen for the rest of his life. To emphasize the importance of academics in the athletic program the South Point athletic department established the South Point Academic All Conference Red Raider team. This team recognizes those who were All Conference in their sport but who have also maintained high academic standing during their sports season. Two teams are recognized each year: one for the fall sports season and one for the winter and spring sports season. Prior to the August 24th home football game versus Lincolnton South Point recognized its Academic AllConference team for the
2017-18 year. To receive this award the scholar athlete must be named an All-Conference player; maintain a 3.5 unweighted grade point average during that sports semester; incur no infractions; and have no more than 5 excused absences. Recognized this year were: Corbin Allen - He is the son of Brian and Lisa Allen. Corbin is a junior and was All Conference in men’s swimming. Catherine Carr - She is the daughter of Scott and Maria Carr. Catherine is a sophomore and was All Conference in women’s cross country.
Brooke Cox – She is the daughter of Tom and Debra Cox. Brooke is a junior and was All Conference in women’s tennis. Ethan Jackson – He is the son of John and Lisa Jackson. Ethan is a freshman at the Citadel and was All Conference in football. Abby Long – She is the daughter of Steve and Kim Long. Abby is a junior and was All Conference in women’s swimming. Gaston Schools names new principals When classes resumed on August 27, Gaston County Schools had seven outstanding educators who began the new school year as a school principal for the very first time. Bus transportation is provided to elementary, middle and high school students living at least a mile and a half from their assigned school. All bus drivers must be 18 years or older and pass a bus driver training program designated by the N.C. Division of Highways. Bus drivers are trained and licensed by the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles. The Gaston County Schools Transportation Department operates one of the safest school bus fleets in the state. The department was chosen as one of the Top Ten School Bus Fleets in the country, and was the first school system in the United States to produce its own biodiesel fuel.

School Bus Safety Tips School bus safety is a top priority with Gaston County Schools. In order to make the bus transportation system as safe as possible, parents should remind children of the following conduct and bus safety rules: Always obey your bus driver. Observe good conduct. Always talk quietly on the bus. Never scream. Be at your bus stop on time. Help keep the bus clean. Stay off the street when waiting for the bus. Stay in your seat until the bus comes to a complete stop. Don’t play with the emergency door. Leave the bus only at the front of the door except in case of an emergency. Always keep hands, arms and head inside the bus.

Gaston County Schools student testing schedules Gaston County Schools has set the following schedule for the 2018-2019 school year. End-of-Grade and End-ofCourse Tests During the school year, students take various tests required by the N.C. Department of Public Instruction. These tests include end-ofcourse and end-of-grade tests for students in grades 3-12. End-of-course tests for grades 9-12 are administered twice a year – at the end of the first semester in January and at the end of the second semester in June. Gaston County Schools had more than 1,100 educators to attend the annual Teaching and Learning Conference held at Gaston College. Abbey names tennis coach Emily Raines, an assistant coach with the Belmont Abbey tennis programs for two years, has been elevated to the position of Associate Head Women’s Tennis Coach, Head Coach Michael Salomon announced. The promotion is effective immediately. “Since her first day on the job, Coach Raines has made such a major positive impact on our program culture and development that I think her move to Associate Head Women’s Coach is exceptionally well-deserved,” Salomon said. “She has been such a huge part of our success and I couldn’t be more excited for her to continue enhancing the Crusader tennis experience.” Raines, previously Emily Bucholtz, joined The Abbey after one year as an instructor at Admiral’s Cove Country Club in Jupiter, Fla. She competed collegiately at Mount St. Mary’s where she fin-
ished her career third all-time in singles wins (71) and second all-time in doubles (57). Raines still holds the school’s season record for singles wins with 24, while ranking tied for second with 19 doubles wins in one year. “I’m very excited to be named Associate Head Women’s Tennis Coach and grateful for the opportunity to continue working with such an amazing group of young ladies,” Raines said. “A big part of why I love working at Belmont Abbey is the focus on a culture of excellence as well as individual development, and I am looking forward to seeing what the team is able to achieve this season!” Raines graduated with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Mount St. Mary’s in 2011.

Abbey cross country teams ranked Belmont Abbey has been tabbed second in the 2018 Conference Carolinas Women’s Cross Country preseason poll, the league office announced. Voting was conducted by the schools’ 11 head coaches. Mount Olive, a participant in the Division II National Championship last year, collected 10 firstplace votes and 100 points to lead the poll. The Crusaders earned 82 points for the coaches after finishing second in last year’s Conference Carolinas championship. They return three All-Conference Carolinas runners in Annie Hetzel, Julia Otranto and Hannah Zenker for the 2018 season. Southern Wesleyan was third with 77 points, while North Greenville was fourth at 70 points. King (62), Limestone (59) and Converse (43) hold slots five through seven while Emmanuel and Barton tied for eighth with 38 points. Lees-McRae and Erskine held the bottom sports with 21 and 15 points, respectively. Belmont Abbey opens the
season on Sept. 1 in Salisbury, N.C. when it competes in Catawba’s Chick-Fil-A Invitational. Also, Belmont Abbey has been ranked eighth by league coaches in the 2018 Conference Carolinas Men’s Cross Country preseason poll, the league office announced. Six-time defending champion Mount Olive was voted to repeat this year, gaining a total of 80 points and eight first-place votes. The Crusaders, who finished sixth at last year’s cross country championship, received 35 points. They will be led by juniors Thomas Eichorn and Rory Witkowski and sophomore Daniel Grosch. Lees-McRae College is ranked second with 72 points, while North Greenville was third with 63 points. League newcomer Emmanuel picked up the final first-place vote and 50 points to rank fourth, just a few points ahead of three teams -- King (49), Barton (46) and Limestone (45). Cramer scrapes out 23-20 win over Mountain Island By John Wilson john.bannernews@gmail.com
Last Friday the Stuart Cramer Storm football team rolled into Raptor Stadium expecting a big win over Mountain Island Charter. The Storm got the win, but barely. 1A Mountain Island gave 3A Cramer a run for their money in a 23-20 showdown that fell just shy of a major upset. So what happened? Well, it looks like the Raptors caught Cramer off guard. The game stayed close all evening. Both teams matched their opponents progress. Cramer got on the board first when Luke Carpenter hit D’Angelo Burton for a 18 yard TD in the first quarter. A Devin Baldwin PAT made the score 7-0 Cramer. In the second quarter Mountain Island struck back when Demetrius Washington hit Durrell Johnson on a 19yard touchdown strike. Mountain Island failed the PAT and trailed Cramer 7-6 at the half. In the third quarter got things going when Elijah Burress ran in a 9-yard touchdown. Mountain Island failed to capitalize on the score by missing on another conversion attempt but moved up to a 12-7 lead. After the MI score Cramer pushed on. Luke Carpenter hit Kendall Karr with a 4-yard touchdown pass. The Storm conversion failed, but Cramer was back in the lead. Cramer tacked on another three points with a 30-yard Baldwin field goal. Midway through the 4th quarter Cramer was holding on to a 17-12 lead when the Raptors struck again, this time off of another Elijah Burris touchdown run. The Raptors were able to convert on the two-point conversion to jump out to a 20-17 lead. Cramer may have been caught napping early on, but they were not prepared to give in. In some last minute heroics Carpenter hit Karr on a 36-yard touchdown pass. A successful PAT kick gave the Storm a 23- 20 lead. Late in the fourth quarter Cramer was back in the lead, but the game was far from over. Mountain Island tried to pull off some last-minute heroics of their own, but this time the Storm defense stiffened up and held them off to hang on to a slim 23-20 win. Cramer avoided what could have been a David vs Goliath type loss. The win capped off what had not been a stellar week for the Storm.
“We didn’t have a good week of practice,” head coach of Ben McMillan said. “It showed. We didn’t play well, but we did enough to win the game.” Luke Carpenter had a great game for Cramer, he went nine for 16 with 95 yards and three touchdowns. Carpenter also had 54 yards on the ground. Cramer’s top rusher was Tyreese Morris who had 140 yards and a six yard per carry average. Kendall Karr was the top receiver with 56 yards and two touchdowns. “Luke Carpenter had a good game,” coach McMillan noted. “He led the team to the win. He threw the touchdown pass to Kendall. I’m proud of those guys for making that play.” McMillan was also pleased with the late fourthquarter stand that the Storm defense pulled off in preventing Mountain Island from scoring an upset. “Also proud of our defense holding them at the end.” McMillan added. Any game that tests your character will be a learning experience. The Cramer players probably thought they were going to have an easy game. It just didn’t work that way. Cramer had to suck it up and pull through. “I’m proud of our guys,” McMillan said. “They played through a lot of adversity, a lot of things we couldn’t control.” Coach McMillan was quick to give Mountain Island credit for playing a good game. “They were ready to play,” McMillan said. “They played hard.” The Raptors were able to amass 383 yards of total offense. Elijah Burris proved to be the Mountain Island workhorse. Burris had 147 yards off of 26 carries and two touchdowns. He also had 45 receiving yards. Another player that had a great game for Mountain Island was backup quarterback Demetrius Washington. Washington came into the game as the starter after Mountain Island lost Marcus Graham to a season ending knee injury suffered last week against Christ the King. Washington showed that he can pick up the pace by throwing for 130 yards and a touchdown. Washington also had 17 yards on the ground. Next up for Cramer will be a home game against East Gaston. Mountain Island will host Graham.

Gaston County Schools welcomes returning students and staff When the morning bell rang on Monday, August 27, approximately 32,000 students (pre-kindergarten through high school) walked through the schoolhouse doors in neighborhoods across Gaston County to start the 2018-2019 academic year. The 32,000 figure includes more than 2,100 seniors in the Class of 2019, who are already looking ahead to life beyond graduation, and more than 2,000 kindergarteners, who are beginning their K-12 education journey. Leading up to the first day, schools conducted orientation/open house programs for students and parents, employees were involved in staff meetings and professional development, teachers spent time preparing classrooms, lessons, and activities, and school personnel took care of last-minute details to ensure a smooth opening of school. “Our schools are ready and excited about the new year, and we are so pleased to welcome our students back to school on Monday, August 27,” said Superintendent of Schools W. Jeffrey Booker. “Everyone in the Gaston County Schools family is anticipating another productive and successful year that will give us plenty of reasons to celebrate the accomplishments of our schools, our students, and our teachers.” This year, Gaston County Schools has more than 1,900 classroom teachers – approximately 150 of them are first-year teachers. The new teachers are participating in the district’s Teacher Induction Program for Success (TIPS), which is designed to ensure educators thrive in their new career. The district kicked off its 50th anniversary celebration on Wednesday during the annual Back-To-School Convocation for teachers and employees. The emphasis is on academics, technology Like every other year, the emphasis is on academics and student achievement. Much time and energy have been put into enhancing our academic programs at the elementary, middle, and high school levels, which is yielding positive results. Through Career and Technical Education, students are learning how to be prepared for life after graduation, whether it’s going to college or into the workforce. Programs such as our Career Signing Day, Career and College Promise with Gaston College, and “Students@Work” and “Educators in the Workplace” with the Gaston Regional Chamber are helping students to make connections between school and “the real world.” To further enhance academics, the district will continue its efforts to provide up-to-date technology for students and teachers to use in their classrooms with the goal of achieving a 1:1 student-to-device ratio. The current student-to-device ratio is 1:1.2. Test results coming in September Test results for the 20172018 year will be released on September 5. The results will give the public a look at how well our students did on the end-of-grade and end-ofcourse state tests that were administered in May and June. The state also will release information about the graduation rate for the Class of 2018. Students spent time learn-
ing over the summer Several enrichment programs kept the focus on learning over the summer. Some 60 rising sophomores participated in the Commissioners’ School of Excellence, a two-week residential program at Belmont Abbey College that teaches about being a leader at school and in the community. The “Camp Achieve” reading program for grades 1-3 provided individual and smallgroup instruction to improve reading and comprehension skills. Other summer camps included the “Summer Imaginarium Camp” that gave middle school students an opportunity to be involved in activities related to science, technology, math, art, and even sports and the college prep camp for high school students. New STEAM academy The new Stanley Middle School, which opened in March, is home to the district’s newest school choice/ magnet program. The STEAM Academy at Stanley Middle School is for students in grades 6-8 and provides a curriculum that emphasizes science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. With the STEAM Academy at Stanley Middle, the district now has six school choice/magnet programs. The others are Highland School of Technology, Gaston Early College High School, Hawks Nest STEAM Academy, Gifted and Talented Academy at Pleasant Ridge Elementary, and Gaston County Virtual Academy. The district is developing additional academy programs to provide more school choice options for students and parents. The new academy programs will be in place for the 2019-2020 school year. school safety Safety remains a priority for Gaston County Schools. This year, all schools will have a full-time police resource officer, thanks to additional funding from the county to expand the school resource officer program. Previously, each high school and middle school had a full-time resource officer and each elementary school had a part-time officer. Additional safety initiatives already in place include a buzz-in entrance system and identity management (visitor check-in) system in use at each school, updated cam-
era and surveillance equipment, comprehensive school safety plans, and an on-going partnership with local law enforcement agencies. It is important to note that Gaston County continues to rank as one of the safest large school districts in the state based on school crime data, which is calculated annually by the N.C. “Stuff That Bus!” brings in supplies for the new school year A shiny new Gaston County Schools bus sat outside of Office Depot on Franklin Boulevard in Gastonia on Thursday, August 9. But instead of waiting for students, it was there for people to drop off school supplies. More than 4,400 items were collected for schools in Gaston County. Almost every seat inside the bus was filled with everything from pencils, paper, and notebooks to glue sticks, crayons, backpacks, and much more. People donating supplies were able to “stuff the bus” by placing their items directly on the bus. “‘Stuff That Bus!’ is such an important event every August as the community gears up for another school year,” said Valerie Yatko, director of business and community partnerships for Gaston County Schools. “This program makes sure that students in our schools across the county have the supplies they need so they are ready to walk into their classrooms and begin learning.” Amid a pep rally atmosphere, contributors to the supplies drive were greeted by cheerleaders from Stanley Middle, Belmont Middle, and East Gaston, marching band drum lines from South Point and Ashbrook, and the

The program includes guest speakers, who share information with students about bullying, making good decisions, and showing kindness and compassion toward others. Additionally, school counselors and other student support personnel will work on bullying prevention efforts and serve as a resource for students and parents. 29 new buses; motorists should use caution Approximately 16,000 children rely on school bus transportation. Gaston County operates 210 yellow school buses and 47 white
activity buses – 29 new yellow buses have been added to the fleet to replace older buses. Over the past two years, Gaston County has received 45 new yellow buses from the state. All buses were inspected over the summer. They are equipped with security cameras and a GPS (Global Positioning System) to ensure student and driver safety. Motorists are reminded to use extreme caution when approaching a school bus and to watch for children in the early morning and afternoon hours when school buses are on the road. All schools cleaned, repairs made School buildings were cleaned thoroughly over the summer and received various upgrades. Projects included
gymnasium floors; plumbing; media center renovations; fencing; parking lot repairs (asphalt and lighting); water/ sewer and restroom improvements; painting; flooring (tile/carpet); and life safety updates. Meal prices unchanged, free meal program continues Meal prices remain the same as last year. The student lunch price is $2.70 for elementary schools and $2.80 for middle and high schools. The adult lunch price is $3.75. Breakfast meals cost $1.20 for students and $1.50 for adults. Again this year, breakfast and lunch meals are being provided free-ofcharge to all students at 19 schools: H.H. Beam Elementary, Bessemer City Central Elementary, Bessemer City

has partnered with Office Depot and the United Way of Gaston County for the past three years to stage the “Stuff That Bus!” collection. It is an event held in collaboration with the annual “School Tools” drive organized by Channel 9.

even when they are away from the classroom. More school partnerships and mentors Again this year, the school district is seeking caring adults to serve as school mentors. Mentors spend up to one hour per week at the school with a student, talking and offering encouragement, helping with homework, offering advice about college and career plans, and providing positive support. Mentors complete a background check and one-hour training session, which are held at various times throughout the school year.
