Volunteers build garden oasis for Holy Angels by Alan Hodge alan.bannernews@gmail.com
A group of hard working college student volunteers from the Build America Team were at Holy Angels in Belmont last week where they constructed a beautiful “sensory garden” for residents. The garden will give Holy Angels residents and their families a place to sit under cool shade trees, enjoy a large wooden pergola with water mist, smell lovely flowers, hear the babbling water in a small stone pond, swing in swings, and generally commune with nature. Build America is a sixweek Pi Kappa Phi fraternity team event traveling the country promoting accessible recreation for people with disabilities. It is among the core service projects events hosted by The Ability Ex-
perience, which is based in Charlotte and is committed to enhancing the lives of people with disabilities. The Holy Angels volunteers were from as far away as California, Texas, and Colorado. Build America member Chuck Paschal explained why he and his fellow students pitched in. “It's different for every individual,” he said. “But most of us are team members because we want our fraternity experience to be meaningful. Most of us will be changed by it.” Throughout the summer, the team will log over 4,000 man hours, save camps and communities $50,000 in labor costs, over $30,000 in materials expenses, and impact the lives of thousands of people with disabilities. After much sharp pencil ciphering, the Town of Cramerton and City of Mt. Holly have approved their respective FY2018-2019 municipal budgets. Town of Cramerton budget revenues include General Fund at $4,514,100 and Stormwater at $57,700 for a total of $4,601,800. Cramerton’s tax rate will remain unchanged at 47.5 cents per $100 of valuation. The budget contains several major capital projects. See BUDGET page 4

If you want to see what a community dry goods and hardware store looked like 100 or more years ago, then you need to hop in your car and head for Washburn General Store near Bostic in Rutherford County. Washburn General Store is the oldest, continuously operating, family owned, retail business in North Carolina. It was first established in 1831 as a tavern on the LincolnRutherford counties stagecoach line by Benjamin Washburn, and has been handed down through brothers and sons to his current owner great-great nephew Edward Nollie Washburn III. The National Department of the Interior inducted the General Store, the family mansion, a classic wooden barn built in 1915, and several other buildings as a historic district in 2002. The other structures include several rental houses, a funeral home, a 1915 powerhouse, and a pump house. The Washburn family mansion-house located across the street from the store has a twin in Belmont, the Albert Hand House at 211 N. Main St., that was built in 1907. In 1914, Nollie Washburn traveled to Belmont and bought a copy of the Hand House blueprints for two dollars. A Washburn ledger reveals that it cost $8,005 to build the house. Materials for the massive Tuscan columns on the front porch cost $240. Slate for the roof set Washburn back $226 and maple flooring another $117. The store's present location opened in the late 1920s. It's the fourth building the business has been in. Need a new pair of overalls? Washburn sells Pointer brand in sizes small enough to fit a tot or big enough to serve as Omar's tent. Other fascinating features of Washburn Store include a 3,800-pound safe, a reminder that Edgar Nollie Washburn was once president of the First State Bank of Bostic. Legend has it that during the Great Depression, Edgar went to the Federal Reserve in Charlotte
and brought back two suitcases of cash to keep the bank open. Store manager Casee Freshour explains the store's charm. “They don't make stores like this any more,” she said. “It brings back memories for a lot of people.” Washburn General Store has a broad following. “People have come to the store from as far away as Germany, Australia, Switzerland, and Peru,” Freshour said. “We have a log book where visitors can write their names and where they are from.” Patriarch Edward Washburn, 88, still works at the
store in the afternoon and enjoys his time there. “I love talking to the people who stop by,” he said. “We plan to keep the store running for a long time.” Washburn General Store is a great place stop by on your way to the mountains or Lake Lure. It's a short trip that will form long lasting memories. Washburn General Store is open every day but Sunday and Wednesday. Hours Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It's located at 2426 Bostic-Sunshine Highway. The phone is 828-245-4129.

as workers constructed the garden. “Our residents will love being outside,” she said. “The new garden will not only add beauty to our campus, it will give them a whole new experience.”

BUDGET from page 1 These include Town Hall building renovations at $188,000 for replacement of selected windows, abatement of moisture infiltration, repair of moisture damage (including plaster repairs and painting), and other interior work. Another capital project is for a bike area and water fountain installation at $42,000. This project will be located at the corner of Center Street and Ninth Street, and will feature a bike “fix-it” station, a water fountain, and bike racks for the many cyclists who already congregate in this area. Cramerton has also received $7,500 from Gaston County Travel and Tourism for this project. Yet another Cramerton capital project for FY2018-2019 are Parks and Recreation Improvements at $70,000. This includes work on the C.B. Huss Building for a gym floor. The gym
floor resurfacing is pegged at $10,000 and will improve the safety of those using the facility, which is the most-used asset that assists with generating Parks and Recreation annual revenue Cramerton Municipal Pool re-plastering is estimated at $25,000 and is part of the standard maintenance of a pool and has been recommended during the last two years of inspection. This capital improvement would last between 10-15 years if completed and given proper maintenance over time. Another pool project is for breezeway drainage improvement at $15,000 will fix standing water issues including water from the pool deck. The pipes the gutters that drain into the ground are clogged, causing overflow into and around the base of the C.B. Huss Building. An amount of $20,000 is budgeted to repair the pillars on the large Goat Island Playground. Due to flooding and additional wear, several pillars
are rotting to the point of losing structural integrity and will be replaced as soon as possible due to the safety concerns. Furthermore, because it is on Goat Island, this playground is one of the most popular in Gaston County, and a huge part of the Town’s regional attraction. Riverside Drive Park will get a nice fence at $15,000. This proposal fits with the BOC ongoing traffic calming initiatives as the fence would serve as a fixed structure erected close to the roadside. This also protects Riverside Park and the trail system, as multiple vehicles have swerved off Riverside Drive during FY 2017-2018. In the approved budget are salary adjustments for the Police Department and Public Works Department that range between 2.5% and 6.5% depending on the position. Given the current climate of law enforcement employee shortages in Gaston County, in the region and across the country, this will help Cramerton stay competi-
tive in retaining current officers ensuring the continued tradition of PD’s high level of service delivery. Cramerton town manager David Pugh summed up the tone of the budget. “A common theme here is that this budget has several items geared towards Parks and Recreation,” Pugh said. “This is very positive as Cramerton continues to see increase popularity and use of its parks like Goat Island and Riverside. This includes not only visitors, but rentals and requests from outside groups for festivals and other programming. A recent example is on June 2, 2018, Cramerton partnered with the Carolina Thread Trail and hosted National Trails Day on Goat Island Park. This event was a major success and brought 1,700 visitors to Cramerton with 65% of those visitors being from outside of Gaston County. So, this not only gave Cramerton excellent, regional exposure, but ben-
efited the businesses in Town with new visitors and patrons as well.” The Mt. Holly city council approved the FY2018-2019 budget at its June 25 meeting. Mt. Holly’s overall budget for FY2018-2019 does not include a tax increase. The rate will remain at 53 cents per $100 of valuation. The budget also includes a 3% cost of living raise for city employees. There will be no water and sewer rate increase. “All of the city employees played a tremendous part in preparing the budget as usual and expected,” said city manager Danny Jackson. “The department heads and others have worked real hard and have been very cooperative and sensitive to the budgetary constraints that we have all had to endure. Special thanks goes to finance officer Africa Otis, Ms. Hollingsworth, and assistant city manager Miles Braswell for their diligent oversight during the budget process. I want
to thank the mayor and city council for its direction, trust, and willingness to allow staff to submit a budget that we think will address the needs of the city. It is also my contention that the budget is fiscally responsible enough to enhance the public trust our government.” The General Fund is projected at $12,510,700- a 14.8 percent increase over FY20172018. The Enterprise Fund is projected to be $7,036,685- up 9.3 percent from FY2017-2018. The budget includes several new positions including a part time police officer, three school resource officers, and a streets and solid waste worker. Capital projects to repair and upgrade the Municipal Complex include $124,500 for painting the Grand Hall, window repairs, Police Department roof repairs, dumpster screening, and signage. Another $32,500 is slated for Municipal Complex general maintenance.

Mount Holly’s Marissa Garrison had the time of her life as state’s teen queen By TODD HAGANS Special to The Banner-News
To adapt a line from the movie, “Dirty Dancing,” Mount Holly’s Marissa Garrison just “had the time of her life” as Miss North Carolina’s Outstanding Teen 2017. The 17-year-old rising senior at Stuart W. Cramer High School crowned her successor on June 22, bringing an end to a year filled with public appearances, special events, and competing at the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen national pageant in Orlando, Florida. “Incredible” is how Garrison describes her year as the state’s teen queen. “It has been a blessing to travel across North Carolina, meet so many wonderful people, and be involved in a lot of great activities,” said Garrison. “I am most proud of having the opportunity to promote the importance of organ donation and share the story of my dear friend, Destiny Stafford.” Garrison and Stafford grew up together and shared a love of dance and pageants. Sadly, Stafford died in a horseback riding accident in July 2015. During her pageant reign, Garrison honored her friend by promoting the Destiny Lives On Foundation. Stafford would have graduated this year from Stuart W. Cramer High School, and the school honored her memory during graduation on June 9. No one is more proud of Garrison than her mother, Barbie, who has been with her daughter every step of the way and watched Marissa embrace the responsibilities of being a beauty queen. “She has given 100 percent, and we are so grateful for all of the support she has received this year,” said Barbie Garrison. “Everyone has rallied around Marissa and made this a oncein-a-lifetime experience for her. She has grown so much, and I know that she appreciates everything that people have done for her.” As her last official pageant duty, Garrison crowned Caro-
line Credle, who represented Clayton in the competition, as Miss North Carolina’s Outstanding Teen for 2018. Although Credle won, two local teens advanced to the top eight and stood alongside the winner during the pageant finale at Raleigh Memorial Auditorium. Miss Gaston County’s Outstanding Teen Lilly Beaver and Alexandria Franks, a Gastonia resident who competed as Miss Piedmont’s Outstanding Teen, were in the running to win the title. Beaver captured a preliminary talent award for her jazz dance routine, which propelled her into the finals. Other local representatives in the teen pageant, which featured 43 contestants from across the state, were Emily Miller (Gastonia), Sarah Grace Blackwelder (Mount Holly), and Avery Pickett (Belmont), who won the non-finalist interview award. The Miss North Carolina’s Outstanding Teen pageant was held concurrently with the Miss North Carolina competition, which included 49 contestants vying for the Tar Heel crown and opportunity to compete at the Miss America pageant in September. Although a young woman from Chapel Hill won the Miss North Carolina crown, two local contestants walked away with scholarships and awards. Miss Gastonia Sophia Kellstrom took second place in the Quality of Life program that honored contestants for their commitment to community service. The Quality of Life recognition for Kellstrom was in addition to a $2,000 community service impact scholarship from the Wells Fargo Foundation. This year, Kellstrom has raised money through her “Pennies from Heaven” program to help address child hunger. Additionally, Miss Mount Holly Melanie Robinson received the non-finalist interview award. Also competing for Miss North Carolina were Miss Gaston County Kayla Clark and Miss Belmont Maddy Wilson. Clark is a student at UNC-Char-
lotte, and Wilson is 2018 graduate of Stuart W. Cramer High School and plans to attend LenoirRhyne University. This week we celebrate the 4th of July. People will be celebrating with hot dogs, fireworks, and family gatherings. We will talk about such great ideals as freedom and liberty. What does it mean to be free? Is freedom the idea of being able to do what you want, when you want to? When you reflect on your own life, are you free? John 4:1-43 records a story of a conversation Jesus had with a Samaritan woman by a well. One day on His way to Galilee, Jesus passed through Samaria. This was a big deal, as Jews had no dealing with Samaritans, as they viewed them as unclean, and false worshippers of God. Jesus however, went straight into Samaria where He stopped at a well of Jacob. There He encountered a Samaritan woman, who He asked to give Him a drink of water. She was amazed that
He a Jew, wanted water from her. Jesus told her He could give her living water that was eternal. She was only thinking of literal water to quench her thirst, yet Jesus was speaking of spiritual things. As Jesus talked to her of the things of God, she asked for this water. She told Jesus she knew the Messiah, the Christ would come one day. Jesus told her He was the Christ! As we think of the Samaritan woman in this story, she reminds us of our own lives. She thought she was free. She thought that she worshiped God, and lived a good life. However, actually she was not free, as she was a slave to sin, and false worship. Many people think they have life figured out. They have all the things this world offers, and they live as they see fit. However, they are really slaves to this world. Slaves to sin, materials, and even time itself. They are anything but free. Freedom, as the Samaritan woman discovered, is only in Jesus. He is the Christ,
the only o n e who can save us and set us free. Rev. Trent Rankin Money cannot free us, materials, or anything this world offers, only Jesus. Freedom is never really free. Our nation was founded by those who fought, and many who died, that Americans could live in freedom and liberty. Through our nation’s history many have continued to fight and die so we could remain free. We are free today because of Jesus Christ. Our freedom was free, yet it cost Jesus His life. He died on a cross, bearing our sin so we could be free. John 8:36 says, “Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed” (NKJV). Are you free today? Have you found freedom in Jesus Christ? If you want freedom, true freedom, give your heart to Jesus today. He will make you free indeed!

Mount Holly baseball going into Sports Hall of Fame By Kathy Blake Time-travel backward to the mid-1960s… To the time when the Beatles were changing America’s music scene. When the Vietnam War was in full force, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act, the first Chevy Camaro and Ford Mustang hit the streets, Ozzie & Harriet were on TV and Roberto Clemente was showing the world how to play right field and win a dozen Golden Gloves. In Mount Holly in the mid-1960s, 47 kids – 44 players and three managers – took that era and made it their own. They played baseball for Coach Delmer Wiles, a Marine Corp. veteran, and formed unbreakable friendships while showing that nobody owned a baseball diamond like the Mount Holly High School Hawks. The boys of 1964 through 1967 won 40 of 50 games, four consecutive Little 6 Conference championships, four-of-seven state tournament games and a roster spot in the Mount Holly Sports Hall of Fame. They continued the work of the 1950s teams, who were conference champs in 1954, 1955, 1957 and 1958. MHHS also won in 1971 and 1972. “They set the bar high and expected every player to give his best every day,” says Eddie Wilson, a three-year starter from 1966-68. “The ’66 team was by far the best group of guys you could ask to play with.” In 1964, with Buddy Guin on the mound and strong bats from shortstop Bruce Bolick, catcher Larry Hartsell, infielders Steve McCotter, Tommy McConnell and Buddy Hart, and outfielders Dean Auten, Phil White and Mike Shelby, the Hawks went 8-2 in the regular season and beat T.C. Robertson 8-6 in the playoffs’ first round. They lost 6-5 in the second round to East Wilkes after leading 5-1. Tony Leroy McConnell (he goes by either name) and Dewayne Moore were the top pitchers in 1965 as the team went 10-0 in league play behind hitting from Jimmy Cook, Jimmy Blackmon, Tommy Foster, Hartsell, McCotter, Shelby, Auten and White and split two non-conference games with Hunter Huss. McConnell pitched a no-hit 2-0 victory over Clyde Erwin High in the first round of the playoffs, relying on his signature fastball. “I had no idea how fast I could throw. They didn’t clock it back then,” he says, “but I was fast enough to be slightly ahead of most high school baseball players. There was an article written about me and Dewayne Moore; they called us
the Hawks’ M&M boys. We were a good combination.” After the Erwin win, he says, “Coach Wiles thought I was the greatest thing since sliced bread, so he pitched me in the next game with only two days’ rest, and the ball felt like a grapefruit and we lost. He took me out about the fourth inning and Dewayne shut them out the rest of the way, but were already too far behind.” “We knew how to get ‘em out,” Hartsell says, of catching McConnell. “I would make a target, and he would hit it. We played against these guys regular until we got to the playoffs, so we knew these guys in the regular season and he knew how to pitch them. I didn’t have to do anything but give him a target. Tony had the hard stuff, and Dewayne had the big curve.” With McConnell and Moore handling pitching, and Bill Neely, Steve Hansel and Eddie Wilson joining the seniors as team leaders, Mount Holly had another 10-0 regular season in 1966 and won its first two post-season games. They lost 2-0 to North Davidson to end their season 12-1 after advancing to the Western NC finals, the furthest a MHHS team had gone since 1954, when the school was 1A state runners-up. “The seniors were great, unselfish, team-first players. Most of the seniors also were on the football team,” Wilson says. “Many of them (Shelby, Hartsell, McConnell, Moore and White) got scholarships and went on to play college ball.” “A favorite memory is winning the conference championship a number of years, and having that brotherhood as I went through my illness,” says Phil White, who was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins Lymphona at age 16. “Them being considerate and kind is what I valued the most. It was a good group of kids.” White is 70 now and works as a clinical therapist in Oklahoma. “I was just honored to go through school and play sports with them,” he says. Eddie Womack took over as top pitcher in 1967 and helped the team of Blackmon, Hansel, Neely, Wilson, Mike Manes, Mike Henderson, Danny White and WG Clayton share a conference title with Lowell Holbrook with 7-3 records. Lowell beat the Hawks in a play-in game to advance to the playoffs. “I was a huge fan of all of these teams. I hardly ever missed a game at Costner Field and I remember listening to WCGC and Eb Gantt cover one of the playoff games, and heard it live when Jimmy Blackmon knocked a homer over the
left field fence in Swannanoa in a survive and advance game,” says Gary Neely. “You can imagine my excitement when, as a freshman in 1967, I was inserted into a big game against Lowell and Whistle Howard when one of our regulars got ejected after a fight broke out at second base in the bottom of the first inning. That helped me to earn a letter on the last of this series of champions, in a conference that was always competitive, and in which the Hawks usually came out on top.” Hartsell, who went on to play for Belmont Abbey, recalls a story about Wiles, at the end of Hartsell’s senior year: “God knows, the first year you hated him, and by the last year you loved him. I was by Delmer’s side in all kinds of baseball, being the catcher. When I was a senior, Delmer got in to take a few swings, and it was the last time I was going to be playing for him, and Delmer was chatting that he would have made the big leagues if it weren’t for the curve. I got Leroy in there and got Delmer to take a couple of swings, and we didn’t do signals in batting practice but this time I signaled for the curve, and he threw that thing, and it curved beautifully and Delmer took a big swing and missed it. And he looked at me and said, “You knot head!” I knew he couldn’t run me but a few more wind sprints, and that was the end of my career in Mount Holly baseball.” Today, the players are scattered but many keep in touch. McConnell lives in Denver and is passing his knowledge to his sister’s 5-year-old grandson. “My arm, it hurts too bad to throw now,” he says, “but I did throw the other day with my sister’s grandkids, and I was surprised I could still throw and play catch.” Hartsell 70, is a retired CPA and lives in Myrtle Beach. He keeps a scrapbook of those 1960s teams – all the photos, newspaper clippings, scores and statistics. “When I look at this stuff,” he says, “and how successful we were, it was amazing. We had good coaching, a good work ethic, and somebody had talent. You know? Every Friday night, there must have been 4,000 or 5,000 at the football field, and every spring night, two games a week, baseball was always crowded. That’s the way people were. It’s the way it was. It really was the way to grow up, and I’m so thankful for the people I had relationships with in school and in playing ball. It was all about team, not individual stuff. Local educator attends Summer Theatre Education Program Chuck Stowe, Director of Theatre Arts at Stuart W Cramer High School, recently participated in the Appalachian Summer Theatre Education Program (AppSTEP), the state’s premier university-based professional development program for theatre education. A program of the Department of Theatre and Dance at Appalachian State University, the program trains teachers and theatre professionals every summer, who in turn impact over 100,000 North Carolina students each year in their individual school districts and classrooms across the state. Taught by nationally and internationally renowned instructors and artists, the program’s advanced curriculum, cutting-edge methodology and unique philosophical
perspective maximize participants’ learning experiences. The highlight of this year’s Appalachian Summer Theatre Education Program was clinician Mike Helms who presented an intensive training titled “Texturing with Paint: A Scenic Painting Workshop.” Helms hails from Utah and has a 30-year career as a scenic designer and scenic artist. He has designed and painted over 150 professional productions in theatre, dance, opera and outdoor drama. Mike has designed professionally for numerous theatres including Ensemble Stage, Bay Pointe Ballet, Appalachian State University Opera, Barter Theatre, Nevada Ballet Theatre, American Folk Ballet, BYU Opera and the Jackson Hole Playhouse.
Stowe, a Gaston County native, has worked in professional and educational theatre since the mid-‘70s. His theatre work has taken him through 43 states and 11 countries. Stowe shared, “This program was phenomenal; I wish I’d learned this years ago. I’ve painted on hundreds of sets and, in a short period of time, Mike Helms taught us time saving and energy saving set painting techniques that yield wonderful artistic results. And Mike taught us how to apply these basic techniques in many varying applications, maximizing the effectiveness of the training. I can’t wait to teach these techniques to my students.” According to Theatre Professor Gordon Hensley, director of the program, Ap-
pSTEP offers a convenient and affordable opportunity for teachers to obtain professional development (PD) and continuing education units (CEU). “With content delivered by theatre and education specialists, AppSTEP provides teachers with the opportunity to continue their content knowledge, pedagogy and theatre practitioner skills without interrupting their careers,” said Hensley. With renewed energy and knowledge, educators trained at the AppSTEP left at the end of the week better equipped and motivated to raise achievement standards and effect positive and lasting change for North Carolina students. Gaston Braves win three straight By Art Shoemaker Last Wednesday the GBraves played host to the Lincoln Co. Cardinals at Abbey Yard. Ethan Shell started on the hill for the Braves and enjoyed his best outing of the season. The lanky South Point righthandler pitched six shutout innings. Shell surrendered eight hits and recorded 8 K’s and walked two cardinals. Nolan Cochran pitched in the seventh frame and allowed one run. The Braves produced their four runs in the game in the second inning. Caleb Hager, Jason Maggs and Cam Hilton all had RBI singles. Addi-

win most games. He was very pleased with Shell’s performance on the mound and the hustle and heads up play in the field by his team. Next up for the Braves was a matchup with our county rivals from Gastonia. In this Thursday night affair another South Pointer, Jacob Landis, pitched a gem in allowing the vistors no runs in surrendering only five hits in six innings of work. Wesley Hall, a Stuart Cramer product, finished out on the hill in allowing no runs in the seventh. Hall has been a leader all season for the Braves both in the field and at bat and has been successful as a relief pitcher.
The G-Braves scored single runs in the first and fifth innings and only allowed Post 23 a single talley in the first innning. The Braves bats produced nine hits in the game. Wesley Hall, Caleb Hager, Grant Tilley, Cam Hilton, Jason Maggs and Carter Merrill all had singles. East Gaston’s Dosi Jonas had two hits for his night’s work along with a RBI. Grant Tilley also had a RBI in this game for the Braves. Coach King praised Jacob Landis for his outstanding effort on the mound. He added that the team edged out a win against possibly the best pitcher in the league in Aus-
tin Mitchell who pitched for North Gaston and was the Big South pitcher of the year. With this victory the Braves are all even with seven wins and seven losses as the regular season is winding down.
