Moose Pharmacy has bought Charlie’s Drugs By Alan Hodge alan.bannernews@gmail.com

Mt. Holly's oldest continuously operating pharmacy, Charlie's Drugs, has been bought by Moose Pharmacy. Henceforth, the store will be known as Moose Pharmacy of Mt. Holly. Charlie's previous owners, Steve Painter and Gary Harrell, will semiretire to spend more time with their families. “Moose Pharmacy are some of the finest pharmacy folks in North Carolina,” said Painter. “We are excited they are coming to Mt. Holly.” Brandi Grist will be the pharmacy manager at Moose Pharmacy of Mt. Holly. Charlie's first opened for business on August 28, 1947. One of the three original stockholders was Charles Alexander Taylor. Over the years, Charlie's has been in three locations. The first place that Charlie's Drugs called home in Mt. Holly was at 118 E. Central Ave. The second spot was 100 S. Main. In 1960, Charlie's moved to its current location at 125 W. Central Ave. Moose Pharmacy has a long and storied history as well. Moose Pharmacy opened in downtown Mount Pleasant in 1882 on the same location where the original store still stands at the corner of Main and Franklin streets. Moose Pharmacy has remained independently owned and operated for four generations. The goal of providing the best healthcare options for their patients has guided the evolution of Moose Pharmacy from a community drugstore to a modern pharmacy with five locations. Each generation from A.W. Moose… to Hoy Moose…

to Whit Moose, Senior… and now Joe & Whit, Jr. has made building the trust and loyalty of their patients their main priority. The families Moose Pharmacy serves, many of which have been coming for three and four generations, serve as a testament to how Moose Pharmacy has successfully been offering a combination of programs and services that exceeds patients’ expectations. In addition to Mt. Pleasant and the new Mt. Holly location, Moose also has stores in Concord, Locust, Salisbury, and Kannapolis. Moose Pharmacy plans to keep the hometown feel of Charlie's and add some exciting new features as well. One of the most innovative Moose Pharmacy products that will be available is called a “Moose Pack”. This consists of a small box containing a month's supply of a customer's medications. Each day's dosage come sealed in a cellophane like package with the medicine name and taking time printed on it. The daily packs are more convenient and less bulky than bottles. Another new thing Moose is bringing will be enhanced computer tracking of customers' prescriptions. Customers will also be able to access their accounts from home online. Moose Pharmacy of Mt. Holly will continue the Charlie's tradition of exemplary customer service and community involvement. Moose Salisbury pharmacy manager Brad Yoder had this to say in that regard. “Before the end of the year we want to start same day free delivery,” he said. “We will also offer immunizations for flu, shingles, and pneumonia. Soon we

We want to remain a cornerstone of the community.” Finally, Yoder says that the store's

Mt. Holly CRO has a lot to crow about By Alan Hodge

alan.bannernews@gmail.com

Mt. Holly's Community Relief Organization (CRO) has a long history and is looking to expand its role of helping those in need. The CRO got started back in 1952 after the Mt. Holly Ministerial Assoc. saw a need to serve the community with short term aid for folks in challenging life and financial predicaments. Since then, it has been stepping in to help with food, clothes, rent and other needs when people are feeling a pinch. The first CRO office was set up in the basement of the old police department. Currently, the CRO is located at 2120 Spring St. nestled between the Food Lion and ABC store. Hours are 9am-12:30pm, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. The CRO serves folks in the Mt. Holly city limits as well as others considered residents but outside the boundary. Clients must provide documentation qualifying them for services. The CRO is a nonprofit designated 501(c)3 by the U.S. government and is a United Way partner. The CRO is governed by a board made up of local citizens, business owners, and clergy. See MT. HOLLY CRO page 2

A new addition to the CRO facility at 2120 Spring St. was recently dedicated. A number of dignitaries were on hand including Mt. historic “Charlies Drugs” sign will likely be restored with the Moose Pharmacy logo added. Starting July 2, the hours

for Moose Pharmacy of Mt. Holly will be 8am-6pm Monday-Friday and 9am-1pm on Saturday.

Belmont council approves FY2018-2019 budget The Belmont city council approved a $12.3 million FY 2018-2019 budget at its June 4, 2018 meeting. The budget also includes a property tax increase of four cents per $100 of valuation. Up to 51.5 cents from 47.5 cents. According to the city, the average home value in Belmont is $181,000 and the tax increase would equal $6 a month for a house of this cost. The budget also levies a vehicle tax of $15 per year on any vehicle resident in the city. The city issued a statement regarding the unanimous vote. “The adopted FY2018-2019 budget meets the needs of a growing town and addresses the city council's priorities. It allows the City to address the much needed capital projects identified by the staff, advisory boards, and city council. It recognizes that as the city is growing, the need for top-quality amenities grows. For the first time, this budget allows the city to be intentional about finding its capital needs.” Total anticipated revenues for the budget amounted to $12,393,100. Ad valorem

taxes made up the lion's share of that number at $7,054,946. Intergovernmental revenues chipped in another $3,475,000. Other general revenues filled out the bag at $1,863,154. As required, anticipated expenditures equaled revenues. Expenditures by department were: mayor and council, $88,993; administration and finance, $748,163; city attorney, $100,000; planning and zoning, $549,099; police, $3,302,391; fire, $$1,593,456; streets, $1,632,266; sanitation, $915,573; parks and recreation; $588,111; capital expenditures, $1,205,751; debt service, $1,481,466; economic development, $217,829. Forty percent of each tax dollar collected goes for fire and police protection. The city has identified $24 million in capital projects. These include $11,720,000 for parks and recreation; $1,1750,000 for police; $881,000 for fire department; $9,269,000 for mobility and transportation. See BUDGET page 2

Motorcycle safety essentials foot cushion between you and fellow riders, and try to avoid riding next to semi trucks— they can cause wind turbulence, and other drivers have trouble seeing a motorcycle around such a large vehicle. Cruise, Baby, Cruise Ride your own ride: if you're in a group and they're riding faster than you are comfortable with, hang back and go your own speed. It’s much more difficult to control your motorcycle when riding fast, especially when the road isn’t flat and straight. Stay at the speed most comfortable for you. Wear Protective Gear A rider not wearing a helmet is five times more likely to sustain a critical head injury. Helmets save lives. Buy a U.S. Department of Transportationapproved helmet, and replace it if it gets damaged. You should also buy comfortable, durable clothing and boots to wear while riding; they offer you greater control and help protect you in the event of an accident. Take a Class Improve your riding skills

and focus by taking a motorcycle safety course. You’ll familiarize yourself with your bike, learn how to get out of tight spots and be better prepared to avoid accidents. The North Carolina Motorcycle Safety Education Program

(http://ncmotorcyclesafety. org) offers many course levels, from the very basic all the way to advanced. Don’t Drink and Ride Riding a motorcycle requires focus, control and quick reaction times. Alcohol

significantly impairs your capacity for all of those things. Protect yourself and others on the road—don’t drink and ride. You can always celebrate after you’ve safely parked your bike for the night.

torcycle. This is easily the most common cause of a collision; ensure you’re visible to drivers by wearing bright colors, putting reflectors on your clothing or riding gear and avoiding blind spots. Pay Attention Stay aware of your surroundings, especially cars in left-turn lanes or on side streets—there’s a chance they could pull out in front of you unexpectedly. Watch a car’s wheels, check for turn signals and keep an eye out for a driver turning their head in preparation for a lane shift. Make Evasion an Instinct Avoiding accidents often requires a quick response to get out of a car’s way. Swerving safely takes practice and skill to stay in control. If you need to stop suddenly, avoid being rear-ended by stopping on the center line or to one side of the lane, not in the middle; and be aware of obstacles on or next to the road (rocks, open car doors, etc.) so you’re more prepared to swerve and miss them. Motorcycle season is here and CaroMont Health has a handful of important safety tips to share—whether you’re new to the rules of the road or a seasoned rider who could use a quick refresh. And last year in North Carolina alone, there were 3,644 motorcycle-related crashes, resulting in 152 fatalities and 385 serious injuries. So keeping safety top-of-mind won’t detract from the thrill of your ride—if anything, it’ll keep the thrills coming and you out of harm. Read on for the top eight safety essentials. Be a Dad! This past Sunday we celebrated Father’s Day. We have honored and celebrated dads and all of the great things they mean to us. As a father of four myself, I know just how important the role of a father is, and just how needed fathers are. Throughout the Bible we see many examples of great fathers who changed the world. One of these fathers is certainly Abraham, the one God promised to make a nation from. Genesis 22:1-14 tells an amazing story of Abraham. God had promised to make the nation of Israel from Abraham, yet God had not given him an heir, a child yet. Finally as Abraham and his wife Sarah were near one hundred years old, their son Isaac was born. While Isaac was a young child, God commanded Abraham to take him up into a mountain and offer him as a burnt offering, a sacrifice to God. Abraham did as he was commanded, and took Isaac up into the mountainside, where they built an altar. Abraham took his son and laid him on the altar, preparing to slay his son. As he drew the knife back, God stopped him. God never intended for him to kill his son, as He was testing his faith. This story usually reminds us that God will test us, yet it also illustrates Abraham’s characteristics as a father. Abraham had a great love for this son that he had waited so long for. Dads, we are to love our children unconditionally, just as Christ loves us. In the world our children face, they need to see loving fathers who support them and are there for them no matter what. Abraham also sacrificed. Abraham was called by God to make the ultimate sacrifice, his child.

He had to make hard choices for God. As fathers, we often sacrifice for our children. We give up our time and resources, whatever it takes for our Rev. Trent Rankin children. Ultimately, Salvation Church we see Abraham Gastonia, NC placed God first. This salvationchurchnc.org test on the mountain salvationchurchnc@gmail.com showed that nothing, including his son, was greater than God to Abraham. We as fathers must put God first in our lives. We need to let our children see us pray, and pray with them. We need to teach our children to love God’s Word. Further, we need to take them to church and worship God with them. Abraham was a leader, he led his nation and his family. Dads, we are to lead our families as well. God has called us to be the spiritual leaders of our homes. We cannot depend on schools or the government to raise our children, it is our responsibility. We must live Jesus Christ before our children, teaching them to love Christ, and live for Him. Fathers, you have a great job that God has called you to do. You are raising the next generation. If we raise our children to love and live for Jesus, perhaps they will lead our nation to Christ. May God bless each of us as fathers, and I pray for God’s guidance and wisdom for each of us as we seek to live godly lives before our children.

Meditations

Fruitful ministries We had just finished the foundation for our community garden. The raised beds were in, everything set and now we were all ready to plant. I could not wait to fill my bed with fresh vegetables. I love patty pan squash, so I filled my bed with beautiful seedlings of patty pan squash. I did everything to tend to the seeds. It was great watching the first sprout, and soon the big beautiful leaves came forth. As I continued to watch my squash grow, strange things began to happen. When the squash came out, it was rotten. Each time one would come out, rotten. I questioned, “What is happening to my squash?” Well, I soon found out what was happening. When I investigated the root, I saw the problem, squash bugs. They were destroying my root and therefore, the fruit was rotten. Infestation in the root affects the fruit. In our congregations we often talk about the lack of fruitful ministries. We spend much time worrying about the fruit, but we need to focus on the root. Where are we rooted? Are we abiding in Jesus? Our root will determine our fruit. Our fruit will resemble our flesh nature when our root is conformed to the world’s way of thinking. Jesus said, “Beware of false prophets who come disguised as harmless sheep but are really vicious wolves. You can identify them by their fruit, that is, by the way they act.” Matthew 7:15-16a NLT. Those who truly belong to Jesus will bear the fruit of the Spirit, not the works of the flesh. Jesus gives a glimpse of what it looks like when we are not abiding in him. “Anyone who does not remain in me is thrown away like a useless branch and withers.” John 15:6a. Jesus instructs us to abide in him, and

he will remain in us. To remain is to stay in a given place or expectancy. We are to maintain an unbroken communion with Jesus continually growing in our spiritual life. Rev. Angela Pleasants How do we get to District the place of abiding? Superintendent “When you obey my of Catawba Valley commandments, you Methodist Churches remain in my love, just as I obey my Father’s commandments and remain in his love.” John 15:10 NLT. Jesus will not ask us to do anything he has not already done. We demonstrate our love for Christ when we are obedient to his word. As we remain in him and live according to his word, the by-product of that relationship is much fruit. When we abide, we will experience a joy that surpasses any human understanding. Often I hear people say, “Following Jesus is hard.” If I think it is hard, then I am expecting God to be something he is not. Maybe I am looking at God as a tyrant who is looking at all our work and judging us by our work. That is not the God we serve; he is a loving God that desires to fill us with joy. To submit to Christ is a road of freedom that brings joy, unspeakable joy welling up in our hearts. And, this is attractive to a hopeless world who desires to see a sustaining, hopefilled, joy-filled life. When we remain in Christ, obey him, we remain in his love. God is love, and that love will flow through us and be the source of the fruit that comes forth.

Junior American Legion begins 2018 season play By Art Shoemaker Junior Legion baseball has started play. American Legion Post 144 in Belmont along with an assist from Danny Green, owner of D&G Painting, will again sponsor the team. Jason Lineberger a 1996 South Point graduate will serve as head coach. He has quality assistant coaches in Kevin Withers, Todd Davis and Austin Robinson. Robin Ratchford will also assist as his work schedule permits. And with this outstanding array of coaches the 2018 version of Jr. Legion players are in very capable hands. Robin Buchanan handles the score keeping and stats for the team in a very professional manner. While at South Point Coach Lineberger made All-State on the diamond as a senior. He continued his outstanding baseball playing career at both East Carolina and Carson Newman where he graduated in 2001 and returned home to coach and teach at South Point. Lineberger has enjoyed much success at the Point highlighted by a State Championship Season in 2011. 2004 was the initial season for Jr. Legion baseball in Belmont. This program was developed for players who age wise are not ready for the Senior division of American Legion competition. Coach Lineberger commented that this summer program gives rising 9th and 10th graders an opportunity to continue to develop their skills for high school play. He added that he looks at this team as the start of the 2019

baseball season for South Point. Lineberger says he begins the teaching process of his offensive and defensive fundamentals that prepares the player for their high school baseball experience. The team plays in the Eastern division of Area IV against teams from Stanley, Stuart Cramer, Shelby, North Lincoln, Gastonia and Mint Hill. The team plays a 16 game regular season schedule with the top four teams from the Eastern and Western division begin the playoffs to determine the Area IV champion on July 6. The winner of this series competes against the three other divisions in N.C. to determine a State Champion. The pitching staff is well stocked. Belmont Middle School, coached by Sam Pruitt, went undefeated in winning the middle school championship this season. The top two hurlers, Jake Beaty and Matthew Walker, off this fine team are expected to continue their outstanding work for the JR’s. Other quality pitchers include Wyatt Triplett, Grayson Thomas, Marshall Witherell and Noah Hargett. On the offensive side expected to lead the way include Will Rhinehart, Andrew Warren, Brian Mellette, Jackson Risk, Hunter Hogue and Beau Adams. Defensively Coach Lineberger pointed out that shortstop Cooper Ray, Quinton Harte in center field and catcher Carson Shell appear to lead the way in the field. Belmont defeated Stanley 5-4 in their first outing. Grayson Thomas started on the mound with relief from

Just a few short years ago, the Rotary Community Garden was just a vision - a vision to bring all citizens of our community together through a common mission of “feeding the hungry (all

food grown in the garden goes to feed those in need), beautifying our city (converting a vacant, littered lot to a beautiful, well-kept garden with mural art, landscaping, bee hives and a pavilion), teaching a new generation (outdoor classroom pavilion and a “book stop”), and knowing our neighbors (growing groups from churches, businesses and garden groups, food distributed through Crisis Assistance Ministry and residential facilities). Pride in the garden amazes all who are involved, and inspirational stories are numerous. With their ability to touch the lives of so many, the Rotary Community Garden was a richly deserving winner of the 2018 Circle of Caring Award. They call him Scooch... By John Wilson john.bannernews@gmail.com

South Point’s Male Athlete of the Year is Zachary “Scooch” Baker. Baker is a varsity soccer and basketball athlete. At 17 years old Scooch already knows what he wants to do with his life and is making the needed preparations to get it done. Scooch was born and raised in Belmont. He first started getting involved with sports when he was about five years old. “I started playing in Bethlehem Church sports and Cramerton Rec,” Scooch said. “I played pretty much everything. By the age of eight I weeded everything out everything but soccer and basketball.” Sports didn’t come easy for Scooch. You could say that he was somewhat of a late bloomer. “In Cramerton Middle in the 7th grade I didn’t make the soccer and basketball team,” Baker noted. “So I did wrestling and track.” Not making the team was something that stuck with Scooch. Instead of giving up, Baker decided that he would push harder. He didn’t plan on failing the next time. It motivated me,” Scooch said. “It made me want to make it next year. I thought I had the skills. When I didn’t make it I went to Cramerton Rec everyday to play. I wanted to make it.” In the 8th grade Baker made both teams, however he didn’t play much. For Scooch it was a step in the right direction. His skills were not yet where they needed to be, but he was getting better. It was in his freshman year that things really started to change for Scooch. In his first year at South Point High School Baker played JV soccer and JV Basketball. The two teams couldn’t be any different. Our team was good, the other horrible. “JV soccer never lost a

game,” Baker added. “JV Basketball never won a game.” There are lessons to be learned in winning and in losing. Scooch took it all in and pushed on. So what’s up with that nickname? Well it was in his freshman year that Zach Baker was given the name “Scooch” “One Saturday at basketball practice during my freshman year coach Kubbs was explaining a play,” Baker recalled. “After explaining the play he asked me what I was supposed to do. I told him I was supposed to scooch over.” Baker’s use of the word scooch tickled his coach. “Coach laughed,” Scooch said. “He said he hadn’t heard that since his grandmother said it.” And the name stuck. “After that some people never knew my name,” Baker chuckled. “They just called me Scooch. I will probably be known as that in college and for the rest of my life.” On the basketball court and soccer field things kept getting better for Baker. In Baker’s sophomore year he made varsity soccer and basketball. Neither team did anything exciting that year, but it was all beginning to come together for Scooch. Things really started to change in Baker’s junior year. Both the basketball and soccer teams both had good years. Scooch even made allconference in soccer. Things really broke wide open in Baker’s senor year. In the 2017-2018 season the South Point basketball and soccer teams both had their best years ever. Scooch was a big part of helping these teams make South Point sports history. “I was glad to be a part of it,” Scooch added. “I made all-conference in both sports and was the defensive player of the year in soccer.” Baker is a very humble young man. He’s friendly and

Scooch’s mom, Adrian Baker owns an accounting business in Belmont. Scooch hopes to follow that path as well, but not just yet. As any young person would, Scooch wants to do his own thing for a little while. Then when the time is right Scooch would like to focus his attention on being a part of the family business. If all goes as planned,

South Point’s Zachary “Scooch” Baker goes over the top of an East Gaston defender during January 2018 action. Baker was named South Point’s Male Athlete of the Year. Next year Baker will be going to UNCC where he hopes to major in accounting. Bill Bostick Tar Heel Sports Photography laid-back. He presents himself like a young man who had positive guidance in his life. Scooch said that he got that guidance from his dad, David Baker. “He’s been a role model,” Scooch said of his father. “He sparked the interest in me. He made me who I am. On Saturday he would take me and my brother Aden out to play basketball. He would put us through coaches drills. He intended to get us better.” David Baker has a lot to be proud of. As Scooch outlines his plans for the future it’s almost hard to imagine that this young man is only 17 years old. Next year Baker will be attending the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He plans on getting a degree

in accounting. For Scooch sports is now going to have to take a backseat to life. “I’m not going to stop playing sports,” Scooch went on. “I’m just going to do intramurals.” Scooch could have gone on to the next level in soccer. However, he understood that if he did that the commitment he would have to put into it could hinder his education goals. “I got offers in soccer,” Baker explained. “But I never liked it enough. In college soccer is a job. I want to focus on learning.” This guy has his head screwed on tight that’s for sure. Baker comes from a family of accountants. Three generations of accountants, to be precise.

Baker would then be the fourth generation of family accountants. Scooch knows he has a lot of hard work ahead of him, but he wants to see the family business continue. “I hope to take that over one day,” Baker smiled. You know, it wouldn’t be a surprise if on his first day at work he goes up to his mom’s desk and tells her to scooch over.

The class includes four high school seniors and a four-year transfer. Romeao Ferguson is a 6-5 guard from Burlington, N.C. and will be a sophomore after transferring from Lincoln Memorial. He averaged 4.5 points, 1.6 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game for the 32-2 Railsplitters, shooting 59.8% from the floor and 44.4% from three-point range. At the Burlington School, where he played for Coach Ron Johnson, his senior team won the state championship with a 31-1 record. Brayden Gault, a 6-4 guard from Haymarket, Va., is Battlefield High School’s all-time leading scorer with 1,618 career points. He led the Bobcats in points (17.3ppg), rebounds (6.5rpg), assists (4.0apg) and steals (1.2spg) as they finished 21-10 overall with an appearance in the state semifinals. Sean Halloran, a 5-11 guard from Orlando, Fla., averaged 16.2 points, 3.1 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game as a senior at Boone High School. Under the direction of Dave Martinson, he led Boone to a 17-12 record while helping the Braves advance to the regional semifinal. Milos Galogaza originally hails from Belgrade, Serbia, but attended Cape Fear Christian Academy in Erwin, N.C. A 6-8, forward, he averaged 15.1 points, 7.2 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game, earning all-conference honors. Galogaza was named conference player of the year honors as a junior. Emanuel (Manny) Hernandez is a 6-5 forward from Puerto Rico via The Masters Academy in Orlando, Fla. He

helped his team to a 23-8 record and a runner-up finish in the Florida 4A state championship game. Under the tutleage of Coach Reggie Kohn, he averaged 11.9 points, 7.7 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.3 blocks per game. “We are excited to add these five extremely wellrounded student-athletes to our Belmont Abbey program,” Taylor said. “They will all bring toughness and competitiveness, and all five have a very high basketball IQ. They come from winning programs, played for fine coaches, and know the discipline it takes each and every day to help their team win. “Romeao’s experience and maturity will be a huge key for us. He plays multiple positions while being able to create offense for himself and others. Romeao will be an exciting player to watch. Sean’s confidence with the ball along with his ability to shoot with range will allow him to have success in our system. Sean is also an excellent passer and plays with good pace. Brayden’s toughness, versatility, and ability to make threes is something we are looking forward to having on the wing. He flat out competes. Milos is very skilled for his size, and he can stretch the defense with his ability to make threes.

Coastal Carolina University is a dynamic, public comprehensive liberal arts institution located in Conway, just minutes from the resort area of Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Milos is also very effective and efficient in the low post. Emanuel has only been in the US for one year yet he is mature beyond his age. Manny is an absolute workhorse who is fundamentally sound with a great basketball feel. Our staff has worked hard to address our needs coming off of this past year. We feel great about our 2018 class and expect that they will have major impact on the court, in the classroom, and in the community.”
