Winter Olympics Rally filled Belmont with red, white, and blue By Alan Hodge alan.bannernews@gmail.com
The City of Belmont threw a Winter Olympics Rally last week that brought a nice crowd of folks downtown to cheer on Team USA and generally enjoy a sunny, warm, late winter afternoon. Adding to the festive atmosphere was the fact that stores and other businesses in the downtown area festooned their facades with American flag pennants. The event was a replay of a similar one back in August 2016 when Belmont rallied behind Team USA during the Rio Summer Olympics. The success of the 2016 rally gave organizers the idea to do it again for the 2018 Winter Games being held at Pyeong Chang, South Korean. Belmont's rally featured a variety of amusements including ice sculpture, Olympic rings toss, a booth where folks could craft their own Olympic buttons, an Olympic logo photo booth complete with “snow” (read soap bubble) blower, snacks, cornhole competition, plenty of red, white, and blue flags, hats, and sunglasses, and a big helping of hometown camaraderie. “It's always good to celebrate the Olympics,” said Belmont mayor Charles Martin. “This rally is a great thing, especially for the kids.” Last week's rally was broadcast live on WCNC TV as was Belmont's 2016 event. WCNC producer Allison Andrews explained why the station came back. “We were very impressed with Belmont and the 2016 rally,” Andrews said. “We decided we would return this year. Belmont’s Tom Hall receives Life Saving Award Belmont native Tom Hall, 27, was recently recognized by his employer the Lincolnton Police Dept. He's been with Lincolnton PD since October, 2015. Hall, son of Joe and Dawn Hall of Belmont, was presented with the Life Saving Award at a recent Lincolnton
city council meeting. Lincolnton police chief Rodney Jordan recommended to the council that Hall be honored with the award. The incident that Hall was involved in took place August 26, 2016 when he responded to a call that there was an un-
responsive man in Wal-Mart. When he arrived on scene, Hall saw that the man's airway was restricted. Hall immediately began administering sternum rubs and diaphragm compression and the man began to breathe again. A letter to Chief Jordan from Lincoln County Emergency Services, Lt. Steve Bridges credited Hall for his professionalism. “His (Hall's) actions were the difference between the man living and dying,” Bridges wrote. Here's Hall's account of what happened. “I had originally responded to WalMart in reference to a possibly intoxicated and disruptive subject,” Hall said. “There was limited information about the call but I was anticipating that the situation would require some form of peace-keeping. When I found the man unresponsive and blue from lack of oxygen it was shocking. I quickly had to change gears from a peace-keeping mindset to a more medically focused life saving one. Just how the noise managed to spread as far and wide as it did was explained by WBTV weatherman Al Conklin. “The weather conditions played a big role in allowing for this "boom" to be heard over a huge area,” Conklin wrote. “We're in a pattern when the
evenings and nights bring about a temperature inversion. This happens when damp, cooler and more dense air is trapped near the ground, and warmer air is just up from the surface around 1 to 4,000 feet. The inversion brings about another effect that makes the blast newsworthy: atmospheric ducting. Atmosphere ducting causes sound waves to travel over very long distances. This also happens when we get elevated thunderstorms

Hall's father Joe said the recognition of Tom is something the whole family is proud of. “It's just typical Tom,” he said. “We knew from an early age he would be a police officer, fire fighter, or serve in the armed forces. His sense of duty and community service have always been there.” Tom explained it this way. “I wanted to be a police officer for as long as I can remember,” he said. “The uniform,

Belmont issues 2017 Annual Report The City of Belmont has issued a detailed report that covers a number of statistical/demographical topics. There's no doubt that Belmont's population has gone up, but by how much? According to the report, Belmont's 2000 population was 8,705 folks. By 2005 that figure had increased to 9,264. The 2010 census showed 10,076 with the 2015 tally at 10,954. The latest (2016) number has the population at 11,077. That may seem like a lot, but as far as percentages go, Belmont's population only went up by 1.70 percent (150 people) from 2000-2015 and 1.74 percent (123 people) from 2015 to 2016. Closely tied to population growth are the number of building permits issued by the city. For 2017, that figure was 136 permits for alterations, 174 for new homes, and 107 “other”. The total value of permits came to $58,262,633. The report also gave a nod to the Belmont Police Department. The year 2017 saw 11 new officers hired and for the first time in a long time the Belmont PD is fully staffed. Downtown Belmont and its 2017 activities are part of the report. During 2017, pri-
vate investment in the downtown area were $5,550,993 and public investments $276,250. Fourteen new businesses opened and 71 full and part time jobs were created. Public parking spaces went up by 40 percent. Free outdoor Wi-Fi was funded and Belmont PD Officer Ben Henderson was assigned the downtown area as his “beat”. The downtown occupancy rate was 97 percent. The 2017 report also listed a number of other miscellaneous informational tidbits. The Belmont Fire Dept. had a 90 percent save versus 10 percent loss rate. A new ABC store opened on Wilkinson Blvd. There were 6.070 water customers and 1.8 million gallons of water per day was treated at the city's water treatment plant. The boat ramp and dock at Kevin Loftin Riverfront Park was completed. A total of $2,783,686 was spent on infrastructure projects. The city contributed $400,000 towards the cost of a site for a new Belmont middle school. Copies of the report are available at City Hall or online at https://www.cityofbelmont. org/.

You’ve got to see this! Salute to a personal Have you ever had someone tell you, “You’ve got to see this?” Maybe it was something on television, or perhaps something they had seen online. People often want us to see things that impress them. My youngest daughter often wants me to see something that she has done, a picture she has drawn, or to tell me about what has happened at school. Family, friends, and others often want to share something important that they have experienced. John 1:35-50 records Jesus calling His disciples as He begins His earthly ministry. One day John the Baptist sees Jesus coming, and announces that He is the Lamb of God. Two of John’s disciples follow after Jesus. They ask Jesus where He is staying, and Jesus says to them, “Come and see” (John 1:39, NKJV). One of these men was Andrew, who goes to tell his brother Peter that he has seen the long awaited Messiah, the Christ. Later, as Jesus, Andrew, and Peter go to Galilee, they encounter a man by the name of Philip. Philip leaves everything and follows Jesus. Philip also goes to find his friend Nathanael, and tells him that he has found Jesus. Philip says to him, “Come and see” (John 1:46, NKJV). As Nathanael comes to Jesus, Jesus tells him that He already knew him, long before Philip had ever told him about the Messiah that he had met that day. Because of this, Nathanael believes. The theme of this early instance in Jesus’s earthly ministry is for all to “Come and see.” Jesus has given each of us an invitation to come and see Him as Lord. Matthew 11:28 says, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest”
(NKJV). Whatever we are experiencing, whatever out hearts need, we can find in Jesus. Do you need hope? Are you searching for a reason to keep on going? Not only does Jesus invite us to come and see Him as Lord, but He knows us long before we ever come. Just as Jesus already knew everything about Nathanael, He knows us as well. Jesus knows what our needs are, and He knows our burdens. As Jesus died upon the cross, we were on His mind. That is how much He loves us. Over two thousand years ago, Jesus came to earth to die for us, for our sins. Will you come and see Jesus today? Maybe you have met Jesus already, and He is Lord of your life. If so, it is time to tell someone to come and see. Surely each of us know at least one person who needs to come and see Jesus. Someone at some time in our lives invited us to meet Jesus. Will we extend this same love to someone who is lost and far away from God today? We have the awesome gospel message of Jesus Christ. It is time now to go to someone this week and say to them, “Come and see!”

legend from Mt. Holly By Gloria Mack It has been said that a person’s life on a tombstone is in the “dash” between the date of birth and date of death. I was reading my father’s obituary the other day and began to reminisce when on the front it said: “servant, husband, father, Pastor, grandfather and friend.” Here is part of my father’s life, “the dash” as I knew him. He was born Jeremiah Robinson in a small town of Elgin, South Carolina to a teenage mother and an ambitious father, the Rev. B.R. Robinson, who moved his family to Charlotte when my father was very young.. It was in Charlotte, he began to make a name for himself and standing up for what he saw and said, “it just wasn’t right.” As a “servant”, he thought many times he was being mistreated. Many time as the second oldest and an easy going spirit, he was asked to do many chores he thought, “just wasn’t right”; and the color of skin when he rode a bicycle delivering groceries on Charlotte’s city streets and was talked down to and cheated. Through this he learned to speak up and out for what was “not right”. He became the voice for many that was being mistreated or overlooked at his long time place of employment. As a “husband”, he and my mother married young. Both were teenagers and their marriage lasted 65 years until she passed in 2008. I remember as a child there was little money, but every year he would tell us: “if you pass your grade, we could go the beach.” We passed our grades and off to the beach we would go; dad, mom and
the 5 children in our old car praying that it would get us there and back. He taught us faith in God and to never walk in fear of man. During the civil rights movement, they taught us to love and not hate, and to never say “I can’t”. This could never be in our vocabulary. On the passing of Billy Graham… By Michael Powell With the death of Billy Graham on Feb. 21, 2018 at the age of 99, we are witnesses to the passing of a man I believe to be God’s last, great apostle. The Merriam-Webster online dictionary has two very nice definitions of that word – “apostle” – one of which means essentially “one sent on a mission”, and the other, and this is my favorite, “a person who initiates a great moral reform”. Both of these definitions are simple and describe to me the simple lover of God and ardent minister for the Gospel of Christ to all men and women, regardless of color, belief, gender, or status in life, Billy Graham. Before I write another word, I want to first note my personal condolences here in print to Rev. Graham’s family: while I am so sorry for your loss, I am so very happy for you too, knowing your loved one is now in heaven with His Master, and reunited once again with his beloved wife, Ruth. His physical suffering is over and he is forever whole again. It seems just about everyone in North Carolina, and some outside the state, and beyond, have a Billy Graham story to tell. It’s either them being at one of his huge crusades, seeing him at some spiritual gathering, watching him on television, or perhaps even being blessed enough to meet him in person. For me and many of the kids in my era, it was watching him on our old black and white television, hearing his voice intoning what we needed to do to know God; to be saved; to come to Jesus. My dad was a preacher’s kid (Baptist), and my mom was an on-again, off-again Catholic whose family had Jewish roots from way back when in Germany. I was firmly entrenched in the “undecided rebel” category, and remained that way, in spite of Rev. Graham’s exhortations to become a believer, until age 17, when I did give my life to Christ. Contrary to most American beliefs in that day and time, my being born into a Baptist/Catholic family didn’t automatically make me a believer in Christ any more than my being born in a bakery would have automatically made me a baker (or a loaf of bread!). That said, I remember very well that when I heard Rev. Graham speak, there was a stirring of sorts in my
hardened little preteen heart, which I later found out was the Holy Spirit’s calling me to re- Michael Powell pent. Sadly, Editor, I didn’t Cherryville Eagle until much later. However, and fortunately for yours truly, the Lord God is a patient Deity, and longsuffering towards His human creation, and I took advantage of my “other chance”. It wasn’t until years later that I thought about that, and it dawned on me that the seed of God’s Word being truly implanted in my then-unfertile heart essentially was, I believe, the result of Rev. Graham’s preaching. He was, at the time, being an apostle to me; at least that’s what I believed then, and still believe to this day. Oh, sure! There were others in my life who told me the Gospel story and ministered to me with the Gospel message; not the least of which was my Baptist pastor grandfather, but they didn’t have that Old Testament prophetic flair, that New Testament, first-century fervor that Rev. Graham had. What I knew of the Apostle Paul, of Jesus’ own disciples; what I imagined those men (and women too) to be in that day and time, I saw and heard in real time when I watched or listened to Billy Graham. He just had this, this… charisma! In some way, I wanted to be like him, in that I perceived him as an honest man whose heartfelt belief in God and his call from the Lord was the single most important facet of his life. Here was a man so focused on the truth that nothing could dissuade him from the call. It was that degree of passion for the Gospel of Christ that eventually led me to want to become a believer in Christ. At least, that’s what I felt then. Fast forward about 45 or more years and I’m still searching for that level, that degree of truthfulness and simplistic, heartfelt honesty in the church, and among those who name the name of Christ, whatever denomination they claim to be affiliated with. Before you claim me “jaded”, know this. In my years with the Christian music group, I saw and heard things that ran the gamut from the serenely beatific and beautiful to the absurdly harsh and ridiculous. The charismatic movement with which I became
involved see-sawed back and forth from the rigid, snakehandling far right screamers in the hills and hollers to the too far-left, almost socialistic hippie commune-loving Jesus Freaks, who were as near to Christian lemmings as I have ever known. Finding the common ground between that esoteric group and audience was tough for the bunch of us Christ-loving wannabe street preachers and erstwhile pretend Christian rock musicians. But we did it. All because, for the most part, we all grew up with the calming and, I believe, stabilizing influence of one man, and one man alone – the Rev. Billy Graham. To this day I don’t know that a one of us ever met the man in person at that day and time, though some of us did when we got older, but that’s another story for another time. I guess we didn’t need to. His influence and reach via television was what did it. It was, if you will, God moving through the airwaves, touching us. Now, years down the road, all of us are grown men and women with kids and grandkids of our own. And, with a few exceptions, we are all still fairly spiritual guys and gals. Some of more than others, but we do find our way into a church now and again. And we still keep in touch and talk about the nature of things. Like we did recently when Rev. Graham passed away. His death will be, like that of the Kennedy brothers, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and other great men and women, talked about, complete with the question, “Do you remember where you were when…?” See GRAHAM, Page 9

The South Point Red Raiders basketball team had a great 2017-18. For the first time ever the Red Raiders finished the season with a conference championship. Part of the credit for that success needs to go to head coach Kody Kubbs. Kubbs peers evidently felt the same way In a recent coaches meeting, Coach Kubbs, and R-S Central’s Greg Wright were voted Coach of the Year for the Southwestern 2A Conference. It’s fair to say that coach Kubbs has done a lot for South Point since coming to the school in 2011. For Coach Kubbs the road to Belmont started in Ohio. Coach Kubbs attended college at Ohio Northern University. He started coaching in 2003, while still a freshman in college. Kubbs first coaching gig was at Ada Middle School. In addition to going to college and coaching middle school, Kubbs scouted for the Ada High School program. In all the hustle and bustle of college and basketball coaching coach Kubbs found the time to start a family. He married his high school sweetheart Sherry. The new family then sat down and tried to figure out where they wanted their adventure to begin. With the help of a map the newlyweds decided to move to North Carolina. “I wanted to be someplace warmer my wife wanted to be within seven hours drive of home,” Kubbs said. “We looked at a map and decided on the Charlotte area.” The Kubb’s decided on Gaston County after meeting Stuart Cramer principal Audrey Devine at an Ohio job fair. At the time, Devine was the principal at Belmont Middle School. Sherry and the coach both planned on being teachers. So they accepted positions with the Gaston County Schools and headed south. Mrs. Kubbs landed a spot at New Hope Elementary and Coach Kubbs went to Belmont Middle. Kubbs coached Wildcat basketball for four years. In 2011 coach Kubbs accepted a position at South Point. His new position included teaching history and coaching the Red Raiders basketball team. Anyone that knows anything about South Point knows that the Red Raiders have a very rich football and baseball tradi-
tion. Coach Kubbs admired what the baseball and football team had done over the years. He thought that there was really nothing stopping South Point from establishing a basketball tradition as well. “The athletes were there,” Kubbs addes. “We just needed to get them on the court.” Over the next few years Red Raider basketball grew. Little by little the program became more successful. “I wanted us to emulate the success of the baseball football programs,” Kubbs noted. Players soon saw what was being accomplished and wanted to be a part of it. “The kids have bought into the program,” Kubbs added. Coach Kubbs believes in hard work and personal responsibility. Soon that work ethic started to pay off. The Red Raiders were getting things done. Last year the Red Raiders won 17 games, the most in school history. This year the Red Raiders went even further by winning 18 games. The Red Raiders also took the school’s first conference title by getting a share of the Southwestern 2A Conference crown along with R-S Central. Kubbs was awarded the coach of the year honor after a conference coaches meeting. The honor came as a surprise. “We had a conference meeting before the conference tournament,” Kubbs said. “We talked about the season and the conference tournament. We nominated players for All-Conference. We also did that for coaches.” During the voting process coach Kubbs was nominated along with Greg Wright from R-S Central. When the voting ended both coaches had received enough votes to receive the honor. Kubbs is humbled to have received such an award. “It’s a great honor to think the other coaches would nominate and vote for me,” Kubbs added. “Obviously the credit goes to my team, but it’s great to be recognized by my fellow coaches.” Coach Kubbs and the Red Raiders have a lot to be proud of this year. They have definitely made their mark. Red Raider basketball is now a legitimate force in Gaston County. It looks like the ground work of another South Point a tradition has been laid.

Gaston Day Students earn 85 Scholastic Writing Awards Gaston Day School students received 85 of the 358 awards presented in writing by the Mid-Carolina Region of the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. Collectively, GDS students won 17 Gold Keys, 28 Silver Keys, and 40 Honorable Mentions. Gold Key recipients were honored at a ceremony on February 3, and their works will advance to compete at the national level. At the Gold Key ceremony, Katie Elder was recognized as one of five regional American Voices nominees. Ruotong Liang received the Best of Twelfth Grade Writing Award. The Mid-Carolina Region includes Alexander, Alleghany, Anson, Cabarrus, Caldwell, Catawba, Cleveland, Davie, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Rowan, Stanly, Surry, Union, Wilkes, and Yadkin counties. Sometimes the basketball playoffs can be weird. With the way the bracket seeding goes it is possible to go up against the team that you never heard of and barely know. It’s also possible that you will be face a team you have played over and over again. For South Point and Mountain Island Charter that’s what ended up happening. South Point and Mountain Island’s basketball seasons ended at the hands of teams they were very familiar with. The Red Raiders lost in the first round to East Rutherford 82-78. The Raptors on the other hand went as far as the 2nd round. The South Point Red Raiders awesome 2017-2018 run came to an abrupt end with the loss to the Cavaliers. In basketball, match ups are everything. Each team is build differently. Sometimes, depending on who you play, one Anthony Little #5 guards an East Rutherford player as #12 match up is favorable while another is not. Scooch Baker looks on. The Red Raiders and the Cavaliers had already played three times this year. The Cavs won two, South Point won once. The Red Raiders just didn’t match up well against the Cavs this year. The Red Raiders hoped to get an opponent that would afford them the chance to break out. It didn’t happen. The computer number crunch decided that East Rutherford and South Point would play, again. South Point head coach Kody Kubbs wasn’t thrilled with the seeding. “I hated we went up against another conference opponent,” Kubbs added. “That happened a lot with our conference. I wish there was a human element to the seeding.” A human element would have allowed for the playoffs to be a little bit more interesting. That said, the Red Raiders are taking nothing away from East Rutherford. The Cavs played solid and deserved the win. In his final game of the year, South Point freshman Logan Threatt stepped up and had a great game scoring 28 points. Threatt turned out to be one of the surprises of the 20172018 season. He stepped in to a starting role after a season ending injury to Charles Cason. “He had limited injuries before cases injury,” Kubbs said of Threatt. “After that he averaged 16 points a game.” 2017-18 is done, but 2018-19 looks promising for South Point. The Red Raiders have a lot of holes to fill, but they don’t look like they’re going to be reloading. It looks like they are just going to restock. “We’re losing seven seniors,” Kubbs noted. However, the Red Raiders have people coming up from the Junior Varsity that seem to be capable of filling a gap. “The JV went 16-4,” Kubbs said. “They are really nice.” Blake Zieske shoots a long jumper against East Rutherford. This time the Raptors faced the Pine Lake Prep Pride. Pine Lake and MI are both members of the PAC 7 Conference. The Raptors played the Pride twice this season, and lost both games. The third time didn’t prove to be the charm. The Raptors lost again to the Pride 82-77. The season was over but MI had a lot to be proud of. The Raptors had a great 2017-2018. They finished the year 17-9. For a relatively young program Mountain Island had a great run. Coach William Dunn has done a great job with this group. Next year the Raptors have some holes to fill as well. They will be losing 6 seniors. That’s not to say MI will be hurting in 2018-19. The Raptors also have some solid talent in Demetrius Washington, Brandon Grigg and Zaire Lucky coming back for next year. See more action on page 13

Davis appointed to Board of Education

During a special meeting last Monday, the Gaston County Board of Education voted to appoint Justin Davis to fill the South Point Township vacancy. Davis will be sworn in prior to the Board’s work session on March 5. At that time, he will become an official member of the Board of Education. He was chosen from a field of 11 applicants, who participated in an application and interview process conducted by the Board of
Education. Davis takes over the vacancy made when Chris Howell resigned from his South Point Township seat in December and relocated to the Wilmington area. Davis will finish Howell’s term which ends with the 2018 general election in November. Davis works as a civil law attorney at Mullen, Holland & Cooper P.A. law firm in Gastonia. Davis will represent South
Point Township’s 42,000 residents in southeastern Gaston County. There are 11 schools in South Point Township including Belmont Central Elementary, Page Primary, Belmont Middle, South Point High, Cramerton Middle, Stuart W. Cramer High, New Hope Elementary, W.A.
