Belmont is one step closer to getting a new school Edited by Alan Hodge alan.bannernews@gmail.com Last Monday night, the Gaston County Board of Education unanimously accepted a bid from Beam Construction Company in Cherryville to build the new middle school in Belmont. The campus will replace the current Belmont Middle School on Central Avenue that is nearly 80 years old. Beam Construction submitted a bid of $33.54 million to build the school -- it was the lowest bid submitted. Beam is the same company that built the new Pleasant Ridge Elementary School in Gastonia, which opened in August 2017. The new Belmont Middle School will be located on 78 acres of land on South Point Road. It will be similar in concept and design to the new Stanley Middle School, which opened in March 2018. LS3P Associates is the architect for the new Belmont school. LS3P also designed Stanley Middle School. The new two-story school will feature 155,000 square feet of space and be able to accommodate

The core areas of the school such as the cafeteria and gymnasium will be built to accommodate 1,200 students to plan for future growth. With the selection of Beam
Construction as the general contractor, activity will begin soon at the site, which is just south of South Point High School. Crews will begin clearing the land in the months ahead. Construction will
take about 24 months with the school opening for the 2021-2022 academic year. A groundbreaking ceremony is expected to take place in March 2019. Funding for the new school is
included in the $250 million school bond referendum that was approved by voters in the May 2018 primary election. The county is expected to issue bonds this fall to pay for the new school.
Gaston County Art Guild sets Former Miss up shop in Mt. Holly Mount Holly

The Gaston County Art Guild has moved its headquarters into the City of Mt. Holly owned Massey Bldg. at 500 E. Central Ave. The location will be called Arts on the Greenway. The Gaston County Art Guild was organized in 1965 to enable those interested in the arts to assemble and participate in the community activities for the advancement of visual art. This non-profit organization is supported by members’ dues and is a funded affiliate of the Gaston Arts Council. The group made the move from its W. If you watched the recent Miss America pageant on TV, you may have noticed a familiar face. Right there on the screen was Allison Farris, who reigned as Miss Mount Holly in 2017. So how did someone with ties to Mount Holly make it to the Miss America stage wearing the Miss District of Columbia sash? It was a multi-year journey in pageantry that Farris admits she thought would never happen. “Walking down the red carpet at Miss America was a moment I had worked toward for five years,” said Farris, who added getting to iconic pageant wasn’t easy. “Along the way, there were many people who believed I could make it and their support and encouragement played a big role in me getting there.” Being Miss Mount Holly in 2017 was a pivotal time. That year at Miss North Carolina, she was a strong contender and won the talent award, but had to settle for a runner-up finish. In that moment with her

weeks ago. Volunteers carted everything from artwork to furniture to the Massey Bldg. and began setting up shop in the 10,000 sq. ft. space. The Art Guild has a five-year lease for the building with the city. Mt. Holly city manager Danny Jackson welcomed the Art Guild. “It’s great to have the Gaston County Art Guild be a part of the Mt. Holly community,” Jackson said. “They have really hit the ground running by connecting with various folks in the community. The Art Guild has a long proven history in Gaston County and beyond. Mount Holly can now become a part of its legacy. The timing of it all is impeccable due to the fact that via the Mount Holly Strategic Vision Plan past and present, the promotion of art is a defined goal. Studies have shown that that the impact of art and culture on a community is very positive; we expect the same in Mount Holly.” Art Guild member Clyde Davis described himself as “relocation point person”. “I saw that Mt. Holly was interested in getting an art group,” Davis said. “So Mt. Holly officials visited our W. Main, Gastonia location and we visited the Massey Bldg. We worked out a deal.” According to Davis, the idea is for the Art Guild to rent studio spaces in the Massey Bldg. to artists and give 90 percent of the money to the City of Mt. Holly. The remaining 10 percent will be used for property management. Some of the spaces will in the form of private rooms, others will be office-like cubicles. At least ten artists have plans to move into spaces over the coming weeks. Since a large part of the Massey Bldg. has an industrial look and feel, it will be perfect for Art Guild members who create “hot art”. “One portion of the building will be available for ceramic firing, glass-blowing, and
metal sculpting,” said Davis. As things progress at the Massey Building, the Art Guild will eventually establish a gift shop and gallery that will be open during special events. The group plans to hold at least

four or five of those next year. Last Saturdays’ Lantern Parade in Mt. Holly also saw Art Guild participation. “This was our first community event in Mt. Holly,” said Davis. Art Guild member Dottie Scher sees a bright and busy future for the Art on the Greenway situation. “I think it could become a full arts and crafts center,” she said. “It could also be an arts outreach location as well as a place for school students to come, learn about and create art.” To learn more about the Gaston County Art Guild visit http://www.gastoncountyartguild.com/.

My name is Diana Marenfeld and I am a retired Emergency 9-1-1 Dispatch Coordinator and Supervisor with 33 years of service. I’ve been married to my husband, Joe, for 29 years and we have two adult autistic daughters that live with us. My Background: My work as a social activist began when I was 20, and hasn’t stopped yet. In NYC, I received commendations from Mayors Guiliani & Bloomberg for my work on the Special Ed school councils. I have also received several commendations for community service from multiple police commissioners. Working across the aisle, I chaired an action committee to pass a retirement bill with Republican Gov. Pataki. Why Run? Women are 52% of the population. Yet in the three years I’ve been here we have not been represented in decisions for our county. I want to bring my skills and experience to the table. Currently Gaston County needs to be more self-sufficient and find ways to lessen our outsourcing to other counties, such as Cleveland, who now house our overflow prisoners. We CANNOT continue to try to arrest our way out of the opioid epidemic! Cleveland county has an excellent model for a drug court. We should follow their example. While we pay Cleveland county to fix our county roads, citizens reporting potholes in their neighborhoods are put on waiting lists months long. Once again, our tax dollars are flowing out of the county. We need to be more competitive to retain our highly trained first responders; our emergency dispatchers, and police officers, so they won’t move on to neighboring counties once trained. Our EMTs are now privately contracted & don’t even have the minimal county insurance coverage for themselves. Many school children don’t even have enough textbooks to take home so parents can assist w/ homework. This is just one of many issues in our schools. We must do better by ALL our students, including our special needs population. There is no debate or discussion between the commissioners, everyone pretty much thinks the same way, we need to look at the other side of the issues. We need fresh ideas. And we need the debate to understand the pros and cons of what is being decided, rather than them voting on preconceived plans & leaving us completely out of the decision. This smacks of back-room politics. What I want to Do We can continue to grow our economy by accepting MEDICAID EXPANSION. Lobbying Congress for Medicaid expansion would bring $4Billion into the economy & directly affect an increase in mental health treatment. I will seek to immediately reinstate a GRANT WRITING position so we don’t continue to miss out on the hundreds of thousands of dollars that are out there & that we Desperately need to FUND TREATMENT CENTERS NOW for drug addiction. I want to continue to grow our economy through Green technologies. I hope to work on a plan to install solar panels on county building rooftops. Not only does this generate funds, but provides job opportunities for the highly skilled trade of installation & maintenance. To go along with this, I want to work on writing county legislation to preserve our quickly depleting tree canopy. I want to give a voice to all those that have gone years without representation from their commissioners; to lend my skills, experience, and ideas to Gaston County. I want to face the future of our county with a PREPAREDNESS PLAN for growth and transition. I want to actively engage my community & LISTEN to their ideas & concerns. I believe Gaston County wants fairer representation. I believe Gaston is ready for the NEXT STEP in our growth. You finally have a choice now. Contrary to everything my opponent assumes is about him, I’m running on what I’ve already proven I can do. There is no need for me to give a line by line defense of his digs. I ask for your vote so we can GET MOVING AGAIN! Remember, Early Voting begins October 17th & runs through Nov. 3rd. Election Day is Nov.6th. I look forward to seeing you at the polls! Remember, if you live ANYWHERE in Gaston county you can vote for me and the other two challengers to the good ole’ boys club! dianamarenfeld4gcc.com Thank you, D. Marenfeld

MISS AMERICA from page 1
24th birthday fast approaching, Farris’ dream of becoming Miss America had ended. She would soon be too old to compete again. Then, the Miss America age requirement increased to 25 years old, and Farris was back in the game. When her job with Microsoft transferred her from Charlotte to the nation’s capital, she decided to give it one more shot. In June, she won the 2018 Miss District of Columbia crown, thus securing her spot in the Miss America competition. On the night of September 9 in front of an audience of thousands inside Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey and millions of people watching at home, Farris heard her name called as the third contestant in
the pageant’s top 15. For Farris, it was a goal accomplished. During the televised pageant, Farris participated in a round of on-stage questioning, which took the place of the swimsuit competition. The national pageant announced this summer that contestants would no longer be judged wearing swimsuits. Farris then made it into the pageant’s top 10 and competed in the evening gown and talent competitions. She performed Franz Liszt’s “Hungarian Rhapsody No. 6” on the piano, the same song she played to win Miss Mount Holly and the talent award at Miss North Carolina. Unfortunately, Farris did not advance to the top five and saw Miss New York Nia Frank-
lin win the crown. Franklin also has ties to North Carolina. She is a native of Winston-Salem and graduated from the University of North Carolina - School of the Arts before moving to New York to pursue a career in music. “It was such an out-of-body experience to compete at Miss America, perform on that stage, and share my story about the importance of having women in the field of technology,” said Farris. “I am incredibly grateful, honored, humbled, and inspired by the experience.” A native of Alabama, Farris grew up playing classical piano, and she says it was music that led her to a career in technology. She earned a Master of Science in Enterprise Integration from the University of Alabama and landed a job with Microsoft as a software developer. During her time as a beauty queen, Far-
ris engaged girls in conversation about STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) and sought to encourage them to take an interest in computer science and other STEM-related fields. From Alabama to Charlotte to Washington, D.C., Farris competed in pageants to earn scholarship money and take advantage of showing off her talent and promoting her “Women in Technology” message. She has won some $30,000 from pageants to pay for college. Delores Cox, who has served as executive director of the Miss Gastonia Scholarship Association for more than 30 years, got to know Farris during her time as Miss Mount Holly. In 2017, Cox assumed the directorship for the Miss Mount Holly pageant (in addition to producing the Miss Gastonia and Miss Gaston County pageants) and
Page 3 says it was a pleasure to have Farris as her first Mount Holly queen. “You just knew that Allison had the potential to make it to Miss America,” said Cox. “She is talented, intelligent, beautiful, and driven to succeed. It was wonderful to see her on that Miss America stage, and everyone in Mount Holly is so proud of her.” Cox added, “Her path to Miss America was a little out of the ordinary, but she got there, and she deserved to be there. Allison possesses all of the qualities you would expect to see in a Miss America.” Farris said she still cherishes her time as Miss Mount Holly. She recalls fun public appearances like Springfest and the Christmas parade and being recognized by the city council. David Moore, who serves on the city council, made sure she was ‘out and about’ in Mount Holly during her year. “I will always remember the people who helped to make my Miss America dream come true,” said Farris, who is back at work at Microsoft and continuing her duties as Miss District of Columbia. “This has been a journey that I have shared with so many people, and I believe that I am a better person because of my experiences along the way.” Young women wanting to follow in Farris’ footsteps will soon have the opportunity to do so. A new Miss Mount Holly (along with a new Miss Gastonia and Miss Gaston County) will be crowned on Sunday, December 16 at Stuart W. Cramer High School. The pageant is open to contestants who are ages 13-24 – girls who are ages 13-17 compete in the Outstanding Teen division. Stuart Cramer students to give cemetery tour Using the medical knowledge from Margolis’ and EMT Training instructor Jeff Waldrep’s students, the theatre arts students developed special effects makeup to create the right “look” for each of the ghosts. Makeup designs reflect what was happening in the area and how those events impacted the people. Emily Harris, a senior theatre student, designed the period costuming that reflects 225 years of local history. Each night there are at least 25 students involved—characters and tour guides plus behind the scenes help—along with parent volunteers who supervise and assist with box office, costuming and makeup, and monitoring the cemetery. “Partnerships like this with New Hope Presbyterian and Stuart Cramer are essential to our success,” says Audrey Devine, Stuart Cramer’s principal. “Students have the oppor- These Stuart Cramer High students will act as guides during the cemetery walk. tunity to connect with our community and our Gaston Schools photo faith-based partners connect with the schools. New Hope Presbyterian Church in partnership with Stagestruck, the theatre group from Stuart Cramer High School, presents “A Cemetery Walk Through Time” from 7 to 10 p.m. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights on Oct. 25-27, 4357 S. New Hope Road, Gastonia. With the help of the theatre arts students at Stuart Cramer High School, Gaston County’s oldest cemetery will come to life. The students will be in period costumes and will serve as both tour guides and characters from history. The historical aspect of this Cemetery Walk sets it apart from other similar offerings in the area this time of year. The Church is celebrating its 225th anniversary this fall, and elements from local history are celebrated and explored in “A Cemetery Walk Through Time.” “Our characters are not people who are buried in the cemetery, but they are ‘ghosts’ who are looking for people buried there,” said Chuck Stowe, who oversees the theatre arts program at the high school. “For example, a Revolutionary War soldier killed in the Battle of Kings Mountain is there looking for James McKee, hoping McKee can help him find his commander, Major William Chronicle (McKee’s half-brother). All of our characters are based on historical information about events impacting Gaston County history, including Yellow Fever, blizzards and floods, the American Revolution, the Civil War, and World War I, and more.” Students worked across curricular and departmental lines to develop these characters, doing historical research and creative writing. Health Occupations and EMT Training students helped with medical research. “Working with the Theater Arts program has allowed my students to engage in medical history. The students were expected to teach the actors and makeup artists on what the disease may have looked and felt like,” shared Jo Anne Margolis, director of the school’s Health Occupations program. “This experience provided the students the opportunity to research, analyze and create a story from the medical ailments of the past. It is exciting as a teacher to see the fantastic work all these kids are doing.”

visiting old graveyards By Alan Hodge Alan.bannernews@gmail.com
Now that cool fall days are here and Halloween upon us, it’s a perfect time to get some outdoor exercise and learn about our local lore by strolling through old graveyards. The oldest graveyard in the BannerNews region is Goshen Cemetery on Woodlawn St. in North Belmont. This plot dates back to the early part of the 19th century and was the burying ground for Goshen Presbyterian Church that was founded in 1764. It is said to be the oldest graveyard west of the Catawba River.
The ground where Goshen Cemetery is located was originally owned by Robert Smith. It was part of a 650 acre piece of property that Smith had bought from two Catawba Indians that encompassed what is now most of Catawba Heights and North Belmont. In 1839 Smith sold 17-acres to the Goshen Church Trustees for eighty-five dollars. Smith and many of his relatives are buried in Goshen Cemetery. Joining Smith in the graveyard are about a dozen men who fought in the American Revolution. A plaque naming them was at one time affixed to the cemetery gate, but it is now gone. Most of the old tombstones in Goshen Cemetery have survived, including some going back nearly 200 years, but vandals have also desecrated several others. Other graves in the older portion of Goshen Cemetery hold members of Belmont area pioneers including names such as Armstrong, Abernethy, Fite, and Rhyne. Local legend has it that there were once Indian burial mounds and a village near where Goshen Cemetery is located. The Abernethy clan itself also has a small and very old cemetery at the end of Turner Rd. off Hickory Grove Rd. not far from Goshen Cemetery. The Smith name also appears on an old graveyard on Belwood Dr. off South Point Rd. This Smith graveyard has dozens of graves going back to the early 19th century. For many years it was neglected and had fallen prey to vandals, nature, and time. However, an effort led by Leigh Ford of Charlotte a couple of years ago saw most of the broken tombstones repaired. Ford and other volunteers also cleaned up the overgrown grounds and formed an organization dedicated to preserving the site.
In East Belmont there’s a tiny old graveyard on Old NC7 near the Catawba River known as the Abee Cemetery. The cemetery is surrounded by a stone wall. Names that appear on some of the tombstones go back to the early 1800s and include Fite, Smith, Abee, Ewing, and Wells. Machpelah Presbyterian Church’s rock-walled cemetery off Old Plank Rd. near Stanley was established in 1801 as a family graveyard located halfway between Joseph Graham’s Vesuvius Furnace and Alexander Brevard’s Mt. Tirzah Forge. In 1848, the quaint church was built beside the cemetery. The first pastor of the church was Dr. Robert Hall Morrison, president of Davidson College and father-in-law of Confederate general “Stonewall” Jackson. The small Greek Revival Church contains pews and a slave gallery that are thought to be original. Members of the Graham, Brevard, and Morrison families are buried in the cemetery. Flat Rock Cemetery on Flat Rock Rd. near Mount Holly holds the graves of several Civil War veterans. This graveyard is maintained by the Flat Rock Cemetery Association and Confederate History and Monument Preservation Society. Among the markers is one dedicated to seven Confederate soldiers who drowned in the Catawba River as they were returning home after the end of the Civil War. The men had hitched a ride on a fishing boat that capsized as they were crossing the swollen river on April 25, 1865. An old graveyard in the backyard of a school might seem an odd mix, but that’s the case with the Pinhook Cemetery and Lowell Elementary. The graveyard is on a gravel path in the woods behind the school and has an association with the 19th century Pinhook textile mill that once stood nearby on the banks of the South Fork River. Among the graves is Nathan Ford who died in 1824. Other graves are marked Harris and Huffstetler. Each year, the kids from Lowell Elementary as well as other volunteers tidy the little graveyard up. Old graveyards are not only interesting to visit during Halloween, they are a reminder of our area’s past and the people who lived here in decades gone by.

Don't bemoan age I am so excited to approach my second half of life. I look back at all I have learned through my experiences. And, I look forward to what God has planned for my life knowing I have more to learn. I am at a crossroads of holy expectation. In all my excitement, it puzzles me when I hear many who bemoan age. We think and speak as if at a certain age we are no longer innovative and creative. I wonder what do some think, you fall asleep one night and wake up the next morning no longer vital because of a number. Listen carefully; age is not a determinate of creativity, innovation, and life. The anointing of the Spirit of God brings innovation, creativity, and life. “Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day.” II Corinthians 4:16 ESV. Life is not about my outer shell. Our life is about the glory and power of God’s presence which takes place inwardly. As humans we are mortal. We know our bodies are finite and wasting away. The reality is the entire age we live in is wasting away. “That the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now.” Romans 8:21-22 ESV. I believe the reason we are so consumed with our age because we live in the awareness of this age, which is passing away while neglecting the age to come. Yes, we live in our current age, but

we are also people of the age to come who possess the Spirit of the new age. I know this life here is not all there is to my life. There is another chapter yet to be lived. Rev. The tree looks old, decayed, and not much for use. But, when you wound the tree, it produces vital milk for nourishment. Likewise, we age, and in some instances, our physical health becomes challenged. But, the outer does not define who I am. The work of God within is creating something stronger and new. We possess nourishment welling up into eternal life. “The righteous flourish like the palm tree and grow like a cedar in Lebanon. They are planted in the house of the Lord; they will flourish in the courts of our God. They still bear fruit in old age; they are ever full of sap and green.” Psalm 92:1214 ESV.

We tell people that they are in our prayers all of the time. Certainly, those who participate in social media post messages of prayer for friends and families daily. We encounter so many people going through various struggles, whether it is health related, financial difficulty, or some other need. Prayer should be a major component of every Christian’s life. Acts 12:1-17 tells us of Peter’s miraculous release from prison. Herod the king had arrested James, one of the apostles, and had him executed. After this he had Peter arrested, hoping to execute him near Easter. During Peter’s imprisonment, the entire church prayed for his release. One night prior to Peter’s execution, he was asleep in the prison chained between two guards, when a light shined, and an angel appeared. The angel woke Peter, told him to put on his sandals, and the chains fell off his hands. The angel led him to the door past the guards. Peter thought it was a dream! The angel led Peter
to the street and vanished. Peter went to the house of Mary, mother of Mark. He knocked on the door, and a young girl named Rhoda saw him, and told those in the house. They could not believe Peter was there, even thinking Peter was a ghost. Peter’s story speaks a great deal about the power of prayer. Do we believe in the power of prayer? Here in this story we see that the prayers of the church resulted in Peter’s miraculous release. God can and does do amazing things through the prayers of committed Christians. However, what about the times when God does not answer our prayers in the way we wish? We see in this story that although Peter was saved from death, James was executed. Sometimes God answers in ways we do not expect. We live for now, yet God sees and sets the future. He knows what we need before we can even ask. Sometimes we are also amazed when God answers our prayers. Those praying for Peter could not believe that God had actually delivered him. We should never be surprised when God acts, He

always hears us, and answers according to His will. God is working in this world and in our lives. He is answering prayers, changing lives, and leading people to His saving grace through Jesus. I challenge you as you pray, to pray believing that God can and will do great things. Pray expecting, trusting that as you say “amen” it will be done according to God’s will and grace. Most importantly, pray. Take time every day to commune with God. Take your needs and the needs of others to your Heavenly Father. Worship God through prayer. Live a life of prayer so that as you say to others, “I’m praying for you,” they will be assured that God will act. If every Christian committed to prayer every day, we could change the world for Jesus Christ!

Cramer out does Ashbrook 21-2 By John Wilson john.bannernews@gmail.com
Stuart Cramer extended their football win streak to three games as they out played a stubborn, yet mistake prone Ashbrook squad. Cramer walked away from the game with a convincing 22-2 victory. The win increases the Storm’s record to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in the Big South 3A Conference. “I can’t say enough about our players and assistant coaches on an excellent job Friday night!” head coach Ben McMillan said. In getting the win Cramer proved once again that in football yardage does not always equal points, and turnovers will kill you. The Greenwave hit the Storm with an impressive running attack that amassed
over 269 yards. Ashbrook racked up 299 yards of total offense compared to Cramer’s 216. All that didn’t matter because the Storm defense kept the Greenwave off the scoreboard. Cramer also took advantage of the fact that Ashbrook coughed the ball up five times. Those turnovers really hurt Ashbrook and helped Cramer immeasurably. “Our defense played extremely well and made some huge stops in our own territory to hold their offense scoreless,” McMillan stated. “We were able to take advantage of some of their mistakes and our offense made some key plays when we needed to.” So how did the Cramer offense do? Well, let’s just say they didn’t exactly have a bad day themselves. Quar-

terback Luke Carpenter threw for two touchdowns and ran in another to lead the Storm’s offensive effort. Carpenter went 7 for 13 and finished with 163 yards. Kendall Karr and Ethan Lurry were on the receiving end of Carpenter’s passes. Cramer’s top runner was Tyreese Morris who ran for 41 yards off of 16 carries. The win over Ashbrook definitely tightens things up in the brutally tough Big South 3A. The win has definitely given the Storm some momentum. “It was an all around team effort and our guys had fun Friday night,” McMillan added. “That’s what it’s all about. This is another big win in the conference and for our program.” This week the Storm will be seriously tested as they take on the undefeated Hunter Huss Huskies. The Huskies are having a banner year going into the Cramer game at 9-0.

Raptors rumble past Pine Lake Prep Pride 47-0 by John Wilson john.bannernews@gmail.com
Mountain Island Charter School looked like they were putting on a football clinic as the Raptors rolled past the Pine Lake Preparatory Pride 47-0. MI took control early and kept pushing the advantage. The Raptors were up 20-0 at the half. In the second half Mountain Island kept on chugging adding another 27 points. “I thought on offense we were able to get our pass game going,” head coach Robert Washington said. “Our QB #6 Demetrius Washington had a career high in passing yards with 234 yards and three touchdowns. We had three receivers over 50 plus yards.” Gabe Stephens was the Raptors top receiver with two catches for 104 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Also contributing were Will Owens and Kobe Creamer. Owns had 78 yards off four receptions well. Creamer had two catches for 52 yards and a TD. Another Raptor player who had a big game was running back Elijah Burris. Mr. Burris has turned into a runaway train for Mountain Island. He’s big, fast and finishes his runs. Burris had 15 carries for 244 yards and three touchdowns. “Obviously Elijah Burris is a big part of our offense rushing for over 240 yards of our 660 total offensive yards,” Washington went on
to say. “We know teams are going to load the box on us to stop Elijah, but we have other players that can make plays. I believe we showed that Friday.”
The Raptor defense also had a good game. The Pride were unable to get anything going offensively. Pine Lake only managed 42 yards on the ground. Their passing game was all but nonexistent. Pine Lake quarterbacks spent a significant amount of time on their backs. The Raptors registered 13 sacks. Gabe Stephens and Jackson Marley led all Raptor defenders. Stephens had 12 stops, and Marley had 10. Stephens and Marley also had two sacks a piece. “The defensive battled and was able to take away what Pine Lake Prep does well,” coach Washington added. “Our defense goal going into every game is to shut out the opposing team’s offense. We were able to accomplish that goal against Pine Lake Prep.” This week that philosophy will be put to the test as MI goes head-to-head with Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy. Right now the Gryphons are the top dogs in the Southern Piedmont 1A. Thomas Jefferson is undefeated with a 9-0 record. MI is 7-2 overall and 4-1 in the conference.
