Just Jeepin’ 4-A Cause club combines camaraderie, caring By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info
Folks who own Jeeps do all sorts of things with them from stump jumping to cruising boulevards looking cool. But there’s one group of enthusiasts, Just Jeepin’ 4-A Cause, that uses their vehicles to help others. The club was founded in 2019 by Karen Finley and her husband Larry after he put forth the idea of a Jeep show to help raise funds for the Love Like Lauren Foundation which is a charity helping children with cancer. From there, the club
and the number of worthy causes it helps raise awareness for has grown. “We are not your average car club,” Karen said. “We have meaning behind everything we do.” Right now, the club has 1,900 members in North and South Carolina. Many of them live in our area- Belmont, Mt. Holly, Gastonia, and Charlotte to name a few locales. All you need is a Jeep and a willingness to help other folks in need. A classic example of the club in action took place December 17-19 when a group of members
made their way to Kentucky in the aftermath of the deadly tornado outbreak. “You could see the damage on TV but when you are actually there it’s unreal,” Karen said. “It was like going down a regular road and everything was destroyed.” The club gathered food, bottled water, and toys from a variety of local donors and loaded them in two trailers. The Year in Review Part 1
2021 proved that Covid could not conquer our communities By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info
If 2021 proved anything, it was the fact that even though the Covid virus was still around, folks were not going to let it keep a lid on life any longer. Here’s a sampling of some of the top stories for the first half of 2021 from the BannerNews archives that illustrate that point. The BannerNews kicked off 2021 with the edition dated January 7. Those pages announced the retirement of long time City of Belmont employees public works director David Isenhour and water plant supervisor Chuck Flowers. Between them, the guys had 56 years of service. That issue also featured an article on the upcoming 30th annual Belmont Unity Day event recognizing the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The January 14th BannerNews led off with an article profiling the Mt. Holly Arts on the Greenway scene
and some of the artists that do their work there. The same paper ran a story on how our local ancestors did business with each other back in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Smith family who were local entrepreneurs and land owners back then, were highlighted. On the inside pages, there was a story telling how NC Gov. Roy Cooper was finally starting to relax Covid restrictions. The January 21st BannerNews profiled local musician Karen Hite Jacob and her expertise on the harpsichord. Jacob also founded the Carolina Pro Musica group that performs tunes from the Baroque era. Another musical story in that edition looked at the new pipe organ that was being installed as part of the First Baptist Mt. Holly fire reconstruction job. January wrapped up with the issue dated the 28th and a lead story touting the good work done by local Meals on Wheels volunteers. The YMCA also got coverage
for their presentation of a community service award to H&M Catering for their work in providing lunches to hungry kids. On the inside pages, there was an article on the NC snow skiing industry and the fact that the slopes were open for business. February rolled around and a lead story in the edition for the 4th examined the efforts of Fred Glenn to preserve the one room Baltimore School that African-America kids had attended back in the 1920s-1950s. The school building is in Cramerton. Another story that week praised the BackPack Weekend Food Program and the work the organization had been doing to make sure kids didn’t go hungry on weekends. The February 11th version of the Banner News highlighted Valentine’s Day and the love story between Jack and Gearl Dean Page who had been married for 70 years. Another article that week profiled Reid High See REVIEW, Pages 6 & 7

Senator Kathy Harrington announces retirement Majority Leader Sen. Kathy Harrington (R-Gaston) has announced she will not seek reelection. Sen. Harrington is in her sixth term representing Gaston County in the North Carolina State Senate. She was elected by the Senate Republican Caucus to serve as majority leader for the 2021-22 session. Sen. Harrington said, “I’m

immensely proud of what I’ve been able to accomplish over nearly 12 years in the Senate. Observations of the great and mysterious Al Haj Everyone knows what is said about opinions. Here are some from that Mysterious Seer of the Universe Al Haj- aided by a Tibetan prayer scarf called a khata he got last week. It’s a beautiful orange color silk with embossed Tibetan designs on it and the Buddhist monks use them and Al Haj says it helps him think better. Just when you have a few dollars stuck back your car will need a repair. Gravity has a huge and unattractive effect on the human body. If you are eating at a restaurant and look out the window you will see someone expectorating in the parking lot. Most things you worry about will not happen at least in the way you thought they would. The ones who clamor for war are not the ones who have to go do the shooting or get shot at. Everything costs too much these days. Most people don’t know their family history any further back than their grandparents. Fast food hamburgers used to cost 15 cents, now they are five bucks. Dr. Anthony Falsie will get a job at a car wash. There’s a lot to learn in old graveyards. It is impossible for the owner to even change the spark plugs in a modern car. Worshiping pro athletes as demigods is questionable. Do not abuse your body...or anyone else’s body either. Try to get out in the woods or a field or to a lake or river as often as you can, maybe take up bird watching. Don’t go over your head in debt for toys or a house or a vehicle- excess debt can be very stressful. You don’t need everything you see advertised on TV.

My New Year’s wishes By Tony Marciano 2021 continues to be very untypical. You and I have wrestled with vaccines, masking and all that is involved with trying to avoid the virus. At Charlotte Rescue Mission, we struggled how to serve the community on Thanksgiving Day while keeping the residents in our alcohol and drug addiction recovery program Covid free. We had to think out of the box and do things differently. After discussing it as a team, we came up with the idea to serve our residents in our drug and alcohol recovery program in the main Mission building. At the same time, we would serve our community guests in our Café. Our guests came to the Mission and we were thrilled to serve them breakfast. Meanwhile, the media arrived to see what we were doing. I was able to share with them our vision for showing dignity and respect to our guests through the gift of a wonderful Thanksgiving meal. One of the reporters I knew quite well. In previous years, he would arrive early and pretend to be flipping eggs on the griddle. It was great to catch up with him. He wanted to do an interview with me. With staffing shortages, he was not assigned a cameraman as was normally the case in the past. Not only was he the interviewer, but he

Your doctor’s phalange will feel larger than it appears. Even a blind squirrel will find a nut now and then. Man is drawn to the ocean and the sky, two things that he cannot control. Try not to let dreams upset you because they are like smoke, gone when you wake up. Bacon is the most popular food in the world. God is watching us from a distance- but closer than you think and His patience is probably wearing pretty thin right about now.
Connect the Dots: It’s all about Him... Quality time By Dennis Siracusa In 1992 Gary Chapman wrote a book called The Five Love Languages. I’ve read it several times, and taught it twice. It fits most relationships. We all lean toward one love language but most of us can use a regular dose of all five. The five are: Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Receiving Gifts, Acts of Service and Physical Touch. If you read and study this book please don’t do it superficially or hastily. After several years, I discovered the love language I thought I majored in wasn’t my main one, another one was and it had long been sorely lacking in my life. Knowing that changed my life. Let’s focus on quality time today; many are concerned with the speed of life, shun interpersonal transparency, and because human value is shrinking; and I’m not just talking about headline horrible news. We text or phone one another instead of connecting when we could. We isolate at home personally and professionally and stream our church services instead of worshipping God together; and we’re in such a hurry any face to face connections we do have lack quality; then we soak up terrible messages on TV and use all this to turn away from God and damage all we touch. God is infinite and yet He spent six quality days creating our heavens, earth and us. Evolution’s doctrine sharply debates the Bible. Scripture says you and I are made in God’s image. He’s not and never was an evolutionary amoeba, monkey or grunt-

Yes, they’ll know we are Christians by our love.” I smiled as I watched two men who put aside their differences so that we could tell the community the story that Thanksgiving at Charlotte Rescue Mission was more than plate of turkey, mashed potatoes, dressing, string beans and dessert. Instead, we could use that plate of food to show dignity and respect to our neighbors. As we begin this new year, you and I will have our own opinions on wearing or not wearing masks, whether we should be vaccinated or not

It’s when we see the other person with a Tony Marciano different opinion as the enemy, someone we won’t talk to, someone we won’t associate with, someone we socially ostracize simply because their viewpoint is different from ours. Those two reporters compete every day. They earn their living by getting you to watch their network and not the other guy’s network. There may even be bonuses when they reach certain viewer numbers. A few weeks ago, devastating tornadoes came through Mayfield Kentucky. A woman had managed to survive the tornado. She was very grateful to be alive. On camera, she went on to say, “You don’t have to like somebody. You don’t have to agree with somebody. We are all humans and deserve to be treated with love and respect.” I still hear that chorus from my youth, “They will know we are Christians by our love, by our love. Yes, they’ll know we are Christians by our love.” I’ll be back in two weeks. Until then, live well my friend.

ing caveman. God spent quality time crafting each one of us in His image, with body, soul and spirit, mind, will and emotion and with purpose and a calling on our unique lives. And here’s the thing, as messed up and chaotic as we are making our world right now, none of this catches God by surprise; we are wrapped up in a purposeful God story. He is the Alpha and Omega, the self-existent one and He’s giving all of us quality time to align ourselves with Him or not. I love Psalm 19:1-2. “The heavens tell the glory of God. And the skies announce what His hands have made. Day after Day they tell the story. Night after night they tell it again. So far I’ve heard and seen this story over 54,000 times. Now that’s quality time! How may we best spend quality time with those around us? After putting God first, our family comes next but the average American spends almost 8 hours a day staring at one type of screen or another; phone, computer, I-Pad, games, or TV. That’s almost 60 hours a week, some of it of little value. How may we best invest ourselves in quality time? In Psalm 46:10 God tells us to “be still” and talk to Him; pray; ask questions; listen for answers; acknowledge His majesty, creativity, protection, and provision in our lives. And when He answers, let’s listen closely because God doesn’t yell. The bedrock truth is that quality time with God first and our family second will make our world a better place.

Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte and on December 22 did a cancer kids run. In addition, they hold an annual rally where upwards of 400 Jeep owners show their vehicles and generally have a good time for a good cause. “We had Jeeps come from as far away as Virginia and Florida,” Karen said. “We raised $22,000 in four hours for the Love Like Lauren Foundation.” So, got a Jeep? “We had sixty thousand bottles of water,” Karen said. “When we got to Kentucky we took the supplies off the trailers and loaded them in three Jeeps and two pickup trucks. We drove through neighborhoods handing the stuff out. It’s something I will never forget.” Another recent event that the club took part in was the December 11 dedication of the Mt. Holly Police Memorial Plaza. About 30 club members and their Jeeps formed a procession of honor. The club had also taken part in January 2021 in the “Thin Blue Line” procession in Mt. Holly in honor of MHPD officer Tyler Herndon who lost his life on December 11, 2020 in the line of duty. The club is also a regular participant in area parades. They work closely with the

is in a vastly different position than it was when I first took office. We have lower taxes, balanced budgets, and working families can send their children to schools that best fit their educational needs. With that in mind, I felt like it was the right time to retire.” Harrington has been a budget writer in the Senate since 2014. Prior to her work on the budget, she was instrumental in the creation of the Strategic Transportation Investments law, which passed in 2013. The STI law brought a more data-driven approach to transportation project funding and established the State Transportation Improvement Program, which identifies what projects will receive funding over a 10-year time period. Her time as a budget writer was marked by balanced budgets, regular revenue surpluses, lower taxes for all North Carolinians, and increased funding for education. Senate Leader Phil Berger (R-Rockingham) said, “I’m thankful for Senator Harrington’s leadership in the Senate. She’s been a strong leader in the caucus, helping guide all of our members and offering sound counsel to those who seek it. She’s the epitome of a public servant, always working to make life better for her constituents and thoughtfully addressing issues facing the state. She’ll be missed in the Senate, but I’m excited to see how she continues to serve the state of North Carolina in her retirement.” Sen. Harrington is the first woman to be elected majority leader in the Senate.

Brown, Hovis picked to lead Gaston Board in 2022 At its annual organizational meeting on December 14, the Gaston County Board of Commissioners selected Riverbend Township Commissioner Chad Brown to serve as the board Chairman for 2022. Brown, who is entering the final year of his third term on the commission, has twice previously served as the board’s
chairman. He also previously served as mayor for the Town of Stanley. Commissioner Bob Hovis, representing the Crowders Mountain Township, was selected as Vice Chairman. Hovis, who previously served as the mayor of Bessemer City, is in the middle of his second term on the board.

The Town of Stanley Beautification committee convened in November 2021. The committee embarked on an initial goal to recognize homeowners within Town limits for Christmas decor and yard maintenance. Nominations were open for anyone to submit resident’s addresses by Dec 5th. From the nominees the committee selected one finalist from each Town Ward. Christmas tree honors service members
Keeping Christmas
The Belmont Festival of Trees includes a tree celebrating The South Fork Boys, a group of young men, 16-25 years of age, from Gaston, Lincoln and Cleveland counties. Designed by William Gaston DAR, the tree recognizes this band of men who took their name from the South Fork River, which flows through the area. In 1780, they met in what is now Belmont and rode their horses to Kings Mountain and joined the overmountain men to battle the western flank of the British army. The South Fork Boys and the other Patriots demonstrated their bravery and spirit at Kings Mountain. Not all the men made it back home. Their leader Major William Chronicle died in battle along with several others. The winning effort at Kings Mountain was a significant turning point in the Battle. During this holiday season, this tree honors the memory of the South Fork Boys and all of our service men and women at home and abroad. Christmas is over already; can you believe it? It just seemed like we were all putting up all of the trees and decorations preparing for Christmas, and now it’s all coming down. All of the special church services are done, parades are over, concerts have ended. Christmas is behind us. This Christmas has given us time with family, feelings of joy, and most of all, focus on the birth of Jesus Christ into this world. As we put Christmas behind us and head into another year, how can we keep Christmas throughout the year? In Matthew 2:13-23, after their visit to Jesus, the wise men returned home, being led by God to travel home another way to avoid King Herod. Herod wanted to harm Jesus who was a threat to his power. An angel appeared to Joseph instructing him to flee Bethlehem. Joseph and Mary took Jesus and traveled to Egypt. Meanwhile as King Herod learned the wise men had deceived him, he then ordered all boys two and under to be killed in the region of Bethlehem hoping to destroy Jesus. After Herod’s death, Joseph was led by God through an angel to return to Israel. Fearing the new king, Herod’s son, they ultimately traveled to Nazareth where Jesus would grow up. Joseph and Mary went home with Jesus
after that first Christmas. They returned where they began, Nazareth. The shepherds returned to their hillside after seeing Jesus. The angels returned to heaven after Rev. Trent Rankin announcing the birth of Jesus. The wise men went back home to the east. Life went back to normal. As our lives return to normal, how can we keep Christmas alive? How can we keep the momentum of Christmas? As we move past the Christmas season, let’s keep our focus on Jesus. We have talked so much about Jesus being the reason for the season. We have sung the praises of God, and we have worshiped in special services all month. We can continue to put our focus on Jesus, keeping Him as the priority of our lives. It can be so easy to grow complacent as we finish such a busy time of year as Christmas. It’s easy to want to rest, take time off from church, or just get away for a while. As we near a new year, let’s keep the energy and momentum of Christmas going. This year, continue to study the Bible, grow in your prayer life, worship often, while always placing God first. Jesus is the reason, not just for the Christmas season, but for every season. Keep Christmas, and the meaning of Christmas, Jesus, in your heart always.
Get a clean heart By Rev. Mark Costner Centerview Baptist Church
Psalm 51: 10 God create a clean heart for me and renew a steadfast spirit within me. It’s amazing how quickly our hearts can change. Our spirits can become unclean, vexed, and full of envy when we are disconnected from the Holy Spirit. It is easy for us to be the moral judge of others, and at the same time, we have difficulty acknowledging our own faults. David was guilty of two crimes: adultery with Bathsheba and the murder of her husband. Only after he was confronted by the prophet Nathan did he realize how wicked and unclean his heart had become. Psalm 51 is David’s response. He repented. He grieved. He admitted he was wrong, and he was truly
sorry for all he had done. He asked the Lord for forgiveness. And then he ask for more. He asked God to give him a clean heart. The word “create” is the same one used in the creation story of Genesis 1. He is asking the Creator to do what seems impossible Mark Costner -to take what is evil and make it good. But that is exactly what God can do. The one who breathed reality into existence out of nothing by the sound of His voice can create cleanness and wholeness in our sinful hearts. Don’t allow a hardened heart or a sickened spirit to keep you from God. Turn to Him today for forgiveness and a clean heart.

School where area AfricanAmerica students went from 1918-1966. The school had been started by Charles Jesse Bynum Reid. On the inside, another word from Gov. Cooper this time announcing that it was time for kids to return to their Covid-closed classrooms and begin getting face to face education with teachers once again. February rolled on and the BannerNews of the 18th announced the planned building of 28 Habitat for Humanity houses son Lee Rd. in N. Belmont. The houses are called the Dixon Village project. That same issue of the paper looked at internationally known Belmont artist Juan Logan and his upcoming exhibition at the Smithsonian Institute. February drew to a close and the issue dated the 25th profiled the good work done by the Mt. Holly Community Relief Organization over the past 70 years. The CRO is still going strong helping folks in need with food and other necessities of life. Another article that week remembered Belmont’s famous Jethro Bicycle Man Mann who gained worldwide attention for his habit of fixing up old bikes and giving them to kids. March 4th arrived and the BannerNews that week took a look at planned improvements for the Spencer Mtn. kayak launch area on the South Fork River. That edition also took a tour of the newly remodeled Mt. Holly branch library. The paper that week ran a team picture and schedule for the South Point Red Raiders football team and the “short” seven game season that was about to begin. March 11 and the BannerNews profiled Belmont Firefighter of the Year Bradley Martin. Another story that week looked at the history of 178-year-old St. Joseph’s Catholic Church near Mt. Holly- the fourth oldest Catholic Church in North Carolina. Yet another Mt.
Holly article that week gave a shout out to local Girl Scouts and the food box they built at First United Methodist Church. The March 18 version of the Banner News had a story announcing that Judy Keller of Mt. Holly had won the BannerNews $10,000 lottery. Keller planned to give some of the money to St. Jude’s Hospital. Another article that week reported on the progress being made at Belmont’s Rocky Branch Park. Another piece looked at Board of Education member Dot Guthrie and the fact she had just received a lifetime achievement award. The March 26th BannerNews revealed plans for the Mt. Holly Police Dept. Memorial Plaza that was slated to be build in honor of Officer Tyler Herndon who had been killed in the lie of duty on December 11, 2020 as well as all other officers who had also paid the ultimate sacrifice while protecting the public, Another piece that week announced plans for a multi-family complex of nearly 400 apartments to be built on the site of the former Imperial Mill in Belmont. Spring arrived with April and the first edition of the Banner News that month profiled the great new middle school being built in Belmont. The job was wrapping up and a tour of the place showed its beauty. Another piece that week reviewed a new book by Jack Morris about the history of Queen of Apostles Catholic Church in Belmont. The warmer weather heralded the upcoming opening of the Mt. Holly Farmers Market and the BannerNews was there. April 8 and the paper ran a piece giving an update on the Chronicle Mill project in Belmont. The paper also profiled the Kings daughters Ministry in Stanley and its tenth anniversary. On the inside pages, the paper gave an update on how the repaving of the tennis courts at Davis
Park was progressing. April rolled along and the Banner News edition dated the 15th ran a featured story on the grand opening of Belmont’s CityWorks Center. The former mill had been transformed into swank offices for City of Belmont employees as well as a huge garage for city vehicles. Another story that week looked at a new program by Belmont Parks and Rec. that would see a large trailer full of recreational equipment taken to neighborhoods for the kids there to use. On the inside, the 60th annual McAdenville Easter Egg Hunt event had lots of pretty pictures of kids and their Easter costumes. April 22nd arrived and the paper that week announced the reopening of the Belmont Historical Museum which had been closed due to Covid restrictions. In Cramerton a group of volunteers tacked a major cleanup project at the Baltimore School. Also, the City of Belmont Main Street program received three state awards for excellence. On the inside, there was an article on how to get your garden ready for spring planting. April wrapped up with the BannerNews edition of the 29th and that issue looked at some interesting scientific work being done at Mt. Holly’s St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Scientists were looking for unmarked graves in the church’s 178-year-old cemetery. Also in Mt. Holly, the third section of the greenway was set to open and the BannerNews gave a sneak preview of it. On the inside pages, Gov. Cooper laid out plans for lifting more Covid restrictions. The month of May arrived and the BannerNews dated the 8th showcased the local Mt., Holly arts scene and the upcoming gallery crawl planed for the city. Another Mt. Holly story looked at the new 29-page annual report that had just been issued by the PD. On the inside, it was announced that Cherubs Café See more on page 7.

May 13th arrived and the Banner News that week gave recognition to the Town and Country Garden Club and the hard work they put in sprucing up the House of Mercy. In Cramerton, spring heralded a major makeover at Central Park. The paper that week also profiled the work done by Gaston County police with their river patrol boat. The May 20th BannerNews announced even more Covid restriction lifting by Gov. Cooper, People were happy. That issue also gave an in depth look at the new Mt, Holly Greenway section. Local craftsman Bill Bridgeman was profiled and his work in preserving old houses highlighted. High school graduation was drawing near and the BannerNews of May 27 profiled three outstanding local
seniors and their plans for the future. On the inside pages, photos and write ups of Keep Belmont Beautiful Yards of the Month brightened things up. Also a full page of grad scenes from Belmont Abbey commencement added more color. June 10th arrived and the paper that week announced the return of the Mt. Holly Sole Patrol senior citizens group and their fun after many months of Covid closure. That paper also had a page filled with pictures of the National Trail Day event in Mt. Holly. Hundreds of folks got out in the sun and had a great time celebrating the outdoors. The June 17th edition of the BannerNews featured a story on Jesse Whaley of Belmont and his Eagle Scout project of sprucing up American Legion Post 144 and installing a new flag pole and veterans recognition plaza.

2021 sees the return of high school sports By John Wilson John.bannernews@gmail.com
For well over a year COVID-19 ground high school sports to a virtual standstill as the nation struggled to deal with the epidemic. During that time games across the country were postponed and then entire seasons were cancelled as schools tried to find a way to cope with a situation that was beyond their control. As hard as things had been the end of 2021 brought with it a bit of hope. This fall, local high school sports finally got back to something resembling normal. Teams from across the sporting spectrum suited up and got back to playing. In 2021 many local teams from volleyball to football did incredibly well. One team that had a heck of a run this year was the East Gaston Lady Warriors volleyball team. The Lady Warriors finished 16-7 and totally dominated the Southern Piedmont 1A/2A. EG took the conference title going 11-1 in league play. Rachel Green, Sierra Soles and Claire Payne all earned all-conference honors while Chavon Brown and Allie Grice contributed significantly to the Lady Warriors fantastic year. Head coach Haley Smith is proud of what the team was able to accomplish in 2021. She hopes 2022 will be a repeat performance. “Volleyball won the conference,” Stewart said. “That was truly a special team. They worked hard all year and we are excited for the opportunity to defend our title next year.” It really was a great season. Departing seniors Rachel Green, Sierra Soles, Milliea Styles and Keyli Garcia will definitely have something to remember
when they graduate. The Stuart Cramer men’s soccer team also did well in 2021. The Storm went 213-1 overall and went undefeated in the Big South 3A boasting a 13-0-1 conference record. Cramer soccer had a deep playoff run as well going as far as the third round. Joseph Bravo and Miguel Herrera led the team in scoring. Bravo had 32 goals on the year while Herrera finished up with 24. Sophomore goalie Luke Mingus has a bright future in front of him. Mingus went 17-1-1 in the net this year. Of course, you can’t mention the successes of this year’s sports programs without highlighting what happened on the gridiron. South Point, East Gaston and Stuart Cramer all had good years and made it to The East Gaston Warriors had lots to celebrate this fall 2021 football season. This season Cramer featured an explosive offense and a defense that at times totally dominated the opponents. The Storm finished 5-6 on the year. Quarterback Justin Rocquemore, defense end Arias Nash and wide out Dameian Bentley all had incredible seasons. Rocquemore finished the year throwing for 1918 yards and 22 TDs and running for 616 yards and 7 scores. Nash was a beast all season. In 2021 he registered 144 tackles and six sacks. Bentley finished the season with 717 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. In 2021 South Point football team showed yet again why they are one of the top teams in the state. The Red Raiders showed class and determination as they went deep into the playoffs. year had to be the rebirth of the East Gaston football program. After years of struggling East Gaston put themselves back on the map. Coach JT Postell and crew have really turned things around at EG. There are high hopes that the trend will continue. The Warriors finished the season at 8-5 and went as far as the third round of the playoffs. Quarterback Trenton
Sherrill finished the year throwing for 1227 yards and 12 touchdowns. Running backs Justin Hill and Markel McKinney teamed up to be the first running backs in school history to each run over 1,000 yards in a season. It’s clear that 2021 definitely saw some great action. However, with 2022 fast approaching look for more teams to push it to the next level.

Cramerton Historical Society plants historic tree The Cramerton Historical Society organized a Christmas tree planting with historic implications. The tree was planted in front of Town Hall near where another conifer had once stood. Historical Society offi-
cer and town commissioner Richard Atkinson talked about the event. “I hope everyone has seen the Cramerton Historical Society Christmas tree at Town Hall,” he said. “The CHS planted the tree to replace the large tree at
the foot of the RR bank, as shown in the historical black and white photograph. Most all mill villages had permanent Christmas trees and an annual lighting ceremony for the village. The CHS is planning to bring this tradition back.”
Atkinson praised everyone who was involved in the project. “On behalf of the CHS, I would like to thank Jeff Ramsey for his vision and dedication to make this tradition a reality,” he said. “This was a community effort organized and orchestrated by Jeff. We would like to thank the following: Hough
Crump for locating the Norway spruce in Lenoir, Paul Stroman for the pick-up and delivery, Jim Lanier and his landscaping crew for planting the tree. We also thank Pharr in McAdenville for providing and installing the lights. This would not have been possible without Town Manager David Pugh, approval of the BOC and Rod-
ney Baker Public Works Director for verification of the planting area and providing the electrical power. We also appreciate the number of volunteers who worked to make this happen. The tree was delivered late Thursday afternoon, planted Friday morning , decorated and the lights were turn on before sun set.”

During the dedication ceremony for the Mount Holly Police Plaza on Saturday, December 11th, the State of North Carolina flag that once flew over the North Carolina State Capitol in Raleigh was presented to the Herndon family by Speaker of the North Carolina House of Representatives Tim Moore. Members of the Herndon family felt led to present the flag to the Mount Holly Police Department and we proudly fly it over the Mount Holly Police Plaza per their wishes. MHPS is honored and humbled to fly such a special flag and sincerely thanks Speaker Tim Moore and the Herndon family for the opportunity to do so.

Abbey men fall to UNC Pembroke The Belmont Abbey men’s basketball team hosted UNC Pembroke in a Conference Carolinas matchup at the Wheeler Center. The Crusaders were able to nearly mount a rally but fell 71-62 to the Braves. The Abbey trailed by as many as 14 points and got as close as seven late into the second half. The Crusaders are now 5-6 overall, 3-4 in the conference while the Braves move to 9-1 and 6-1, respectively. How It Happened- Sean Halloran and Chandler Baker accounted for the first two made field goals of the game for the Crusaders. Bosko Bojovic and K.J. Garrett accounted for 11 of the final 15 points of the first half for The Abbey. The duo led a late surge with a pair of layups
in the final six seconds in the first half to pull Belmont Abbey within 10 points at 31-21 at halftime. Belmont Abbey held UNC Pembroke to 34.3% shooting in the first half. The Crusaders got things going offensively from beyond the arc, making all six 3-pointers attempted after halftime. Belmont Abbey shot 51.4% from the field in the second half. Quest Aldridge led the way for The Abbey in his first home game of the season with a team-high 14 points off the bench. He also accounted for two steals. After the holidays, don’t throw your Real Christmas Tree in the trash. Real Christmas Trees are biodegradable, which means they can be easily reused or recycled for mulch and other purposes. Here are some recycling options and tips on what to do with your tree after the holidays. Every community is different, but in general, you have these options: Curbside pick-up for recycling: Many providers will collect trees during regular pickup schedules on the two weeks following Christmas. There are often requirements for size, removing ornaments, flocking, etc. Take your tree to a dropoff recycling center: Most counties have free drop-off locations. Usually, you may take up to two trees to a dropoff location at no charge. Tree recycling/mulching programs: Tree recycling and mulching programs are a fastgrowing trend in communities throughout the nation. Check with your local department of public works for information. They chip and shred the trees, then make the mulch available for use in your garden. Your hauler will notify you of pick-up dates in your area. Be sure to check with your local hauler. Nonprofit pickup: Call for an appointment to have a nonprofit organization in your area pickup your tree. Some Boy Scout troops offer a pickup service for a small donation (often $5). Yard waste: Cut the tree to fit loosely into your yard waste container. Important: Never burn your Christmas tree in a fireplace or wood stove. Other Recycling Options Soil erosion barriers: Some communities use Christmas trees to make effective sand and soil erosion barriers, especially for lake and river shoreline stabilization and river delta sedimentation management. Fish feeders: Sunk into private fish ponds, trees make an excellent refuge and feeding area for fish. Bird feeders: Place the Christmas tree in the garden or backyard and use it as a bird feeder and sanctuary. Fresh orange slices or strung

Several members of the Mount Holly Police Department participated in the recent “Officers on the Roof” fundraiser for the “MHPD Shop with a Cop” program this Christmas. The “MHPD Shop with a Cop” program adopted several families in need during the Christmas season to assist them during this time. The officers were on the roof of Mt. Holly McDonald’s from 1:00pm until 5:00pm. Also during that time, Mount Holly McDonald’s donated 10% of their profits to the program.
