Originally located in the Detroit area, the company relocated permanently to West Branch, Michigan, in 1968.
Through the decades, Taylor has developed a history of innovation, bringing numerous products to market that have helped further shape the fenestration industry. The products introduced were Adjustable Hinge steel doors, Stainable Steel doors, commercial products, 8-foot steel doors, smooth and woodgrain fiberglass doors, and a 90-minute fire-rated steel frame.
In December 2012, Taylor was acquired by Wausau Supply Co., an industry-leading building materials distributor and manufacturer based in central Wisconsin.

When Taylor was established in 1946, Mr. R.L. Taylor could not have envisioned how his small metal-forming business could significantly and continuously impact the evolution of many products currently used in building homes. 1946 2021

The 2012 transition led to a new focus on the multi-family and light commercial markets. Taylor has grown dramatically throughout the past several years and now has a diverse customer base that focuses on residential and commercial projects throughout the United States. Doors are constructed with two steel sheets, available in different gauge thicknesses, and feature hot-dip galvanized steel for added durability and corrosion resistance.
Door sweep weatherstrip enhances weather resistance, improves energy efficiency, and deters the entry of insects and debris.
The injected inner core of polyurethane foam enhances insulation, acting as a bonding agent to lock all internal components in place for enhanced durability.
The composite lock block provides secure mounting of door hardware and enhanced structural integrity.
HINGE REINFORCEMENTS
Our doors boast a heavy gauge hinge reinforcement plate, ensuring long-term performance and enhanced security. This strategically designed plate prevents wear and tear over time, adding durability to the hinge area.
Our offering includes: 20-gauge (surface mounted fixed hinge prep), 11-gauge (adjustable hinge prep) and 7-gauge (commercial mortise prep) hinge reinforcement plates.

The fixed hinge prep is standard on Taylor doors, featuring a 4" surface mount hinge prep with a sturdy fixed hinge reinforcement plate. This straightforward design ensures ease of installation and long-term performance.

MORTISE HINGE PREP
The 4.5" mortise commercial hinge prep is designed for projects requiring a recessed hinge pocket. Exclusive to the WestGuard door series, this prep is tailored for hollow metal frames and resolves the need for under-sizing doors. Its unhanded design provides flexibility, accommodating both left-handed and right-handed installations. Additionally, filler plates come standard with each door.
ADJUSTABLE HINGE PREP
Taylor’s Adjustable Hinge Plate System is a versatile solution for your door needs, featuring a 4" surface mount hinge prep with an accompanying adjustable hinge backer plate. This unique hinge system allows for easy adjustments up/down and in/out without removing the door from the frame, all achieved effortlessly with a simple screwdriver.

TEXAS DEPT. OF INSURANCE ( TDI ) APPROVALS
Taylor offers steel doors that have been rigorously evaluated for compliance with wind load standards set by the International Residential Code (IRC) and the International Building Code (IBC). These evaluations are conducted by the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI), and you can access detailed reports on their website at tdi.texas.gov.
SECURITY RATING
Taylor’s steel-edge doors conform to the highest security classification, Grade 40, through ASTM F476 - Security of Swinging Door Assemblies. The test measures a door assembly’s ability to restrain, delay, and frustrate the commission of break-in crimes. It specifies a grade for the door assembly, with Grade 40 representing the highest grade. For best protection from forced entry, specify an entry door with a Grade 40 rating.
STC & OITC RATINGS
The Sound Transmission Class (STC) and Outdoor-Indoor Transmission Class (OITC) are tested and classified by Intertek’s Architectural Testing, Inc. (ATI), based on the ASTM E90 test standard for Sound Transmission Loss.
The results are based on operable test units; inoperable results are available upon request. Detailed reports are available upon request.
FLORIDA BUILDING CODE ( FBC ) APPROVALS
Taylor offers steel doors tested for code compliance in Florida’s High-Velocity Hurricane Zones (HVHZ) and nonHVHZ regions. Detailed approval information can be found on Taylor’s website and the Florida Building Code (FBC) website under Product Approval.

INSULATION
Taylor’s steel-edge doors have a polyurethane foam core that provides nearly twice the insulating properties of an insulated hollow metal door.
This foam is injected into the steel shell and fills the entire cavity. The foam is blown (expanded) with an eco-friendly blowing agent that is CFC and HCFC-free.

Other styles are available by request. The maximum visible glass size for fire-rated doors is 100 sq inches.
FIRE RATED DOORS
Steel doors with a steel edge are tested to withstand a minimum of 90 minutes of fire exposure at temperatures reaching more than 1,400 degrees Fahrenheit. Fire rated doors are tested and classified by Intertek’s Warnock Hersey.
