Welcome Welcome to IWA Canalway Cavalcade 2014, a unique boaters’ and community get together which has been taking place in Little Venice since 1983. Organised and staged by The Inland Waterways Association volunteers this festival weekend heralds the start of spring – everyone getting outside to enjoy the sights and sounds of the countryside right here in iconic Little Venice in the heart of London. It is in every sense ‘A Capital Event for London’ – the theme for this year’s festival. If you go to the Horse Bridge, overlooking the Pool, at 2:00 p.m. after the Opening Ceremony you will see in how many different ways this theme can be interpreted by the boaters in the pageant!
resident or have just bowled up on your bike – you’ll find something to enjoy. There are kids’ activities from kayaking to our lovable Chucklefoot one man band and from Punch and Judy to making lace plates in the traditional boaters’ way; competitions; food and trade stalls selling everything under the sun from cuddly toys to canal ware; music of many kinds; processions and pageants; a real ale bar with a patio and tables where you can relax in the sun and chat with your friends; delicious food for all tastes and lots, lots more.
Many of the 100 or so boats gathered here, at the junction of the Grand Union and Regent’s Canals, have travelled some distance along the 2000 mile waterways system in Britain, much of which has been in existence for over 200 years. The canals were the motorways of their day and caused just as much discussion and controversy as the HS2 rail link does today! Why not pay a visit to the IWA marquee on Warwick Crescent to find our more? Whether you’ve travelled to IWA Canalway Cavalcade from near or far, are a boater, a
We hope you will want to find out more about the boats and our wonderful waterways and become a fan during this exciting and colourful spectacle – so have a great time! Christine Smith Publicity & Marketing Manager IWA Canalway Cavalcade 2014

Blessing of the Waters An annual tradition at Canalway Cavalcade is the Blessing of the Waters of Little Venice and the Blessing of the Boats conducted by Father Gary Bradley, Vicar of Little Venice.
The Blessing of the River Thames, revived in 2009, takes place annually in January. The Bishop of Southwark presides over a ceremony, when the parishes of Southwark Cathedral and St Magnus the Martyr meet in the middle of London Bridge. A short service concludes with a simple wooden cross being thrown into the river representing the blessing of Christ for the river and those who use and care for it.
On Sunday he and his congregation will walk from St Saviour’s Church to the Horse Bridge. At about 12:45 pm Father Bradley will say prayers from the bridge, blessing the waters of Little Venice. We will all say the Lord’s Prayer as we stand around the Pool. He will transfer to ‘Lady Mildmay’ ‘The Friendly Stairlift Company’ and boaters and their crews will await his blessing with holy water, as he is taken round the moorings of the Pool, Paddington basin and Delamere Terrace. ast leaflet:Layout 1

Children’s Entertainment Chucklefoot, Punch & Judy and Mr Mylo the mime artist are here to entertain the children. The Puppet Theatre Barge, moored in the Pool, will be performing ‘A Child’s Garden of Verse’ daily throughout the festival. Advance booking is recommended. For more information go to www. puppetbarge.com/HowToBook.html
Challenger and The Electric Barge are also organising fun things to do: making decorative bunting, badge-making, creating jewellery and face painting!
There’s lots to do on the water too: kayaking, Bubble of Fun’s ‘Walking on Water’ and Boating Pool.
You can collect more information about these activities from our Information Points on the Paddington and South Towpaths and in Rembrandt Gardens. To find these please refer to the Site Plan in the centre of this Souvenir Programme.
Kids can also step aboard Pirate Prince to learn more about Pirates in the Pirate Castle!
A treasure hunt will be organised during the weekend, as well as a teddy bears’ picnic on Sunday afternoon, and Creepy Crawlies shows during the day.
If wet, some events will move to the Entertainments Marquee on the Stone Wharf or the Information Marquee in Rembrandt Gardens. Please listen out for announcements by the PA team or check at one of the Information Stands.
There’s plenty to keep children busy. IWA’s Wild over Waterways workshops will include brass rubbing, knot tying, duck headdresses and lace plates. Staff aboard Elsdale II, The Church Army’s boat Stort

Take care walking along the towpaths, there are more boats here than usual and there are, unavoidably, some trip hazards Keep young children under control (no running!) Dogs are welcome but must be on leads at all times (and poop-scooped after!) Stay ‘water safe’ whenever you are near the water’s edge Make use of the litter disposal facilities

Canal Camps give you the chance to do your bit for the environment whilst having a fun holiday. Every Boater should be an IWA Member The Inland Waterways Association is a national charity set up in 1946 to save the waterways from dereliction and closure. Over 60 years later, we are as strong as ever and very much needed. We campaign for the use, maintenance, restoration and development of the inland waterways. Since we were formed we have been instrumental in helping to save over 500 miles of canal and river navigations.
IWA presents a strong and authoritative voice to Government and to navigation authorities on waterway issues to ensure a fair deal for all users. No other organisation does more for boaters. IWA supports waterway restoration and amenity groups around the country. Our Waterway Recovery Group provides engineering, planning and logistical support for restoration schemes nationwide. With the advent of Canal & River Trust, and the possibility of the Environment Agency navigations being starved of funding, the inland waterways continue to need a strong independent voice. Join IWA today, and help us provide that voice and protect your interests.
