The pages of this publication showcase over 315 farm and forest-based businesses, restaurants, local artisans, other nonprofit organizations, activities and accommodations located throughout Delaware, Greene, Schoharie, Sullivan, Otsego and Ulster Counties in New York State.
This year, we are proud to feature many of the farmers’ markets and farm stores located throughout the Catskills region that have made it possible for consumers to purchase directly from the source year-round. The pages of this magazine represent the growth and triumph of the buy local movement during the hardest of times with the largest membership we have had to date. One of the many achievements Pure Catskills has accomplished throughout the years has been creating a community-based network of collaborators, showcased best by thriving farmers’ markets and farm stores. These relationships are not just farmer-to-consumer, but from farmer-to-farmer and neighbor-to-neighbor. This Guide is a reflection of these beautiful collaborations, relationships and region.
We have long supported farmers’ markets because of the vital role they play within our communities. Whether it’s a weekly routine, a lunch spot or a meeting location, farmers’ markets are essential in the warm summer months and are now mainstays during the cold winter months. We are delighted to share the work of the Cooperstown Farmers’ Market, Franklin Farmers’ Market, Narrowsburg Farmers’ Market, Oneonta Farmers’ Market, and Phoenicia Farmers’ Market this year. FRANKLIN Farmers’ Market
THEFranklin Farmers’ Market began in 2006, growing roots in the community and becoming a popular place to purchase locally grown and made food. Founded as a community-minded response to an increasingly complicated and detached globalized food system, the Franklin Farmers’ Market sought to build community through food and connect people to the growers and sources of their nutrition.
A weekly outdoor market, spanning an average of 20 weeks from late-spring to mid-fall, patrons have enjoyed a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere as they shop and visit for nearly 16 years. The market has grown and changed over the years, always taking place on the front lawn of the Franklin Stage Company through the successful efforts of volunteers, vendors and customers alike.
One unique feature available at the Franklin Farmers’ Market is a collection of artwork donated by artists from the Franklin community over the years, and sold as a fundraiser for the market. Collect all 13! Another positive quality of the market has been the café, with hot coffee and cold drinks available for sale, to be enjoyed with friends while sitting at one of the market tables.
Our various vendors are, of course, the main attraction offering almost
all the food products needed for daily cooking and eating needs. Sprinkled amidst the food vendors are local crafters, artisans and other entrepreneurs for an average of 10–13 vendors per market.
Two vendors are original editions: Fokish Organic Baked Goods and Cordwood Acres Farm, both run by iconic market personalities and featuring long-time favorite products. Currently, a quarter of our vendors are straight from Franklin, and all others are from neighboring towns. Meats, vegetables, herbs, fruits, baked goods, preserves, sweets and more are available.

Having both cherished our experience of being raised on a farm we desired the same for our family. We bought this farm in 1987, the year we got married and started Humdinger Holsteins. We couldn’t be more grateful for the ways farming allowed us to work together every day, often alongside our children. We love being outside, tending to the earth and caring for our animals. It is a simple life, filled with hard work and long days but we wouldn’t trade a single day. We’re proud to see this family tradition continue as our son, Trevor, steps in to take over the farm, becoming the sixth generation.
We farm close to 500 acres and have over 100 registered Holsteins. Raising, breeding and developing quality Holsteins has always been our passion. In 2019 we opened Hum-
dinger Farm Store, offering a way for the community to directly access the abundance of local goods along with the bounty of our own farm. ALLFamily Farm is, as the name suggests, a family owned and operated farm. I purchased the property with my wife Misty knowing that we wanted to build an environment which fostered some of our childhood experiences and dreams. In 2019, we finally set in motion the plan and made our long-awaited dream of owning a farm a reality.
Misty and I knew that we wanted to farm, but it was still more difficult than we thought it would be to actually decide what we would focus on. Fortunately, it didn’t take long before we decided on Berkshire pigs. Berkshires are a heritage breed with a rich history, docile personality and most of all, a world class flavor. We both grew up around farming and wanted to allow our children to experience the sense of achievement which comes with being able to see the results of our hard work. Meals are such a bonding experience, and we are firm believers in eating healthy and humanely. This is why we decided that we wanted to provide healthy locally-sourced pork to our community. With that in mind, we started
off by building a barn, a huge pasture for our hogs and got our first herd of Berkshire piglets. Though our infrastructure has changed since then, one thing remains consistent, we can proudly say that every single barn and pasture was a labor of love built by our family and friends.

We feed our hogs raw milk from a local dairy farm, along with grain from a local feed mill. Additionally, during the warmer seasons, they get to forage in the pastures. We run an on-site farm store which is open on Saturdays from 10:30 AM-5 PM. Pick-up orders by appointment are also available during the week. We are believers in being transparent with our customers. Miller is an old name in Bovina, with the first Miller, David, arriving around 1815 from the Scottish Borders. Millers owned, resided and/or leased on Miller Avenue from 1832 to 1973. Miller Avenue is a 1 1/2 mile town road connecting Bramley and Lee Hollow to County Route 6 and the Bovina Center hamlet.
Ancestral Family Tradition
In 1832, William Miller, the brother of David, took a lease on a section of land, approx. 144 acres from Edward P. Livingston. His rent included 20 bushels of wheat, two fowls and one day riding (basically a day of labor on the Livingston estate). In 1859, Miller purchased the property from Livingston’s heir, Louisa Livingston for $575. In April of 1862, the property ownership fell to William’s sons, William Junior and Berry Shaw Miller. The property descended through to Berry Shaw Miller’s grandson, Mural 0. Miller, who was a second cousin of Anna Bell Barnhart LaFever. In 1973, it was sold out of the Miller family until 1999 when it was purchased by Duane LaFever, a third great-grandson of William Miller and grandson of Anna Bell Barnhart LaFever.
Duane and his wife Karen, along with their two sons, Cody and Cullen, continue an ancestral family tradition by producing maple
syrup on the 104 acre property. Remnants of the original sugar house foundation can still be seen today, as well as the barn and rock foundation of what was an old home. Daffodils still come up in the spring around the foundation stones.
From the 2450 taps on the property, Maplewood Farm & Orchard produces 100% pure maple syrup, maple candies and smooth as silk maple cream, as well as many other delicious products such as peppered maple mustard, maple apple pumpkin spread, candied nuts, granola, lollipops, cotton candy, oatmeal and buttermilk pancake mixes. Karen handmakes these products in her certified Confectionery Kitchen and Gift Shoppe in Delhi. In joint production with maple products, the LaFevers also tend an apple orchard. There are 25 varieties to pick including Macintosh, Macon, Honeycrisp and Wellington, just to name a few.
The sugar house, pumpkin and U-Pick apple orchard are open weekends 10AM–4PM from September 17th–October 10th 2022. Maple Weekends are the last two weekends in March 2023, 9AM–3PM. Farmland for a New Generation New York (FNGNY) helps farmers seeking land and landowners wanting to keep their land in agriculture by offering a statewide New York Farmland Finder website and a network of Regional Navigator organizations. The New York Farmland Finder website features events, training materials, and listings of farmers in search of land as well as land available for farming. Regional Navigator organizations can provide trainings and on-the-ground customized support for both farmers and landowners in regions across New York State.

The Greater Catskills Young Farmers Coalition’s member farms are primarily small-scale family farms and meet monthly in Delhi, NY at BUSHEL during the offseason or at farm tours/potlucks from May to October. Our chapter aims to foster the exchange of ideas and support among member farms and to lobby for local, state, and national policies that benefit small farms. Though our Google group is only open to member farms and agricultural stakeholders, our Facebook group is open to the public-feel free to get in touch with us there and check for any updates and events.
