In last month’s Wheel I informed the community that General Manager Tom Curry was departing to take a new job near his home in New Jersey. On behalf of the Association and Board of Directors I again want to publicly recognize him for the improvements he has made to Watergate over the past six years. Tom, thank you for managing the numerous successful projects and overseeing the day-to-day operations while you were our General Manager! So what are we doing to find a suitable replacement? The Board established a Watergate Board Executive Search Panel that began working the first of September. The panel consists of Directors Theresa Mulrane, Joe Vecchio and Bob Lee; Director Lee heads the panel. We realize that selecting the right person for the job is important and so have hired an executive talent acquisition firm to assist in the process. This firm has a proven track record of identifying candidates who have executive level qualifications and experience managing similar large-scale communities. Our panel is now conducting interviews with potential candidates and will make their recommendations to the Board of Directors, who in turn will make Page 4
Last month I highlighted the Covenants Committee. At the September Board meeting we appointed or reappointed the following resident unit owners as members and chair for the committee in FY2022: Marlene Hawkins, Patricia Espinet, Susan FertigDykes, Richard Parker and Erik Grosof (Chair). On behalf of the Board, thank you all for volunteering for this “thankless job!”

Budget Committee
The Board also appointed or reappointed the following resident unit owners to the Budget Committee for FY2022: Patricia Espinet, Stephen Allenbach, Babak Pirouz, Phoebe Rolen, William Brown, John Flynn, Jonathan Stanley and Susan Bouldin (Chair). In addition to these members, the Board appointed Board members Bob Lee, Luke Lopez and Butch Hodges to the committee earlier this year. Last month’s Wheel applauded the committee’s work, especially its production of the FY2022 budget. By now you should have received your FY2022 budget booklet and letter depicting your specific monthly assessments. If you haven’t received them, please contact the Management Office as soon as possible.

Balcony HVAC Utility Closet Façade and Vent Replacement Project. Ev-Air-Tight’s work on Building 3, the final building to be done, is going well. Many

Balcony Restoration Project. Consolidated Waterproofing Company has completed balcony renovations for Buildings 2 and 4. It is now working on Building 1 and work is progressing on schedule. The balconies on Building 3, the final building in this project, will be renovated after completion of the HVAC Closet Façade project there. HVAC Coil Cleaning for Residents. Northern Virginia Specialty Company has completed the coil cleaning for Building 4 and will complete Building 3 cleaning once all HVAC equipment has been reinstalled into the balcony closets as part of the HVAC Closet Façade project. Dryer Vent Cleaning for Residents. Heart National has completed the dryer vent cleaning in Buildings 1 and 2 and is on schedule to complete all buildings’ vents by the end of October. Elevator Motor Replacement. Schindler has replaced all elevator motors in Buildings 1 and 4. It began replacing motors in Building 2 last month and that work is scheduled to be finished in May. Building 3 work will be started once a contract is signed by the Board.
Why does this matter? These projects are important because they help keep our buildings safe, improve comfort and aesthetics, and enhance property value.
Back to Normal
After living with the COVID pandemic for more than a year and a half, we long for life as it used to be. Will it ever return to normal? Will we forever remain hunkered down, fearful of the next variant, wondering October 2021
whether we need booster shots, need to wear masks, etc.? Will there be a “new normal”? So many questions — and so few definitive answers. All we can do is continue to look toward the future. Meantime, Watergate will continue to adhere to government laws, such as the current Commonwealth of Virginia laws, Governor's Executive Orders, and health department and City ordinances. While we anxiously await the end of the pandemic, we are fortunate in that we can — as permitted — enjoy Watergate’s numerous amenities. And Watergate has lots of social, arts and entertainment events planned for the coming weeks and months.
Old Glory Gets a New Location Our Maintenance staff installed a new, 26-foot flag pole near the Back Gate and donned it with a new U.S. flag to boot! The previous flag pole’s location wasn’t as visible, made it difficult to hang and was much shorter. Upcoming Trips
A few of the upcoming trips that A&E is planning include: • The National Gallery of Art in October, and • A day trip to Greenstreet Growers/Amish Market in December, a perennial favorite at WAL Plans are in the works for the following trips in 2022: • The MGM Grand/Casino • Muse Paint Bar at National Harbor; and • The Arena Stage to see the musical Catch Me If You Can. As you can see, your A&E Committee has been active in trying to come up with something to interest everyone.

Finally, the Arts and Entertainment Committee (A&E) is back up and running! The final pre-covid excursion was to the National Firearms Museum on March 5, 2020; our first post-covid excursion was 16 months later to Old Town Alexandria on July 15, 2021. While many of the other WAL Committees continued to meet and carry on necessary WAL business, the A&E Committee waited for our Board to give us the “green light” so that we could get back to safely providing fun and interesting excursions for our residents.
Back Into the Swing of Things
Resuming our excursions has been a challenge for several reasons. At first, it was almost impossible to find an open venue, as many popular destinations were closed. Then, when things finally started to reopen to the public, groups were not allowed. Along with other restrictions, this is still one of the frustrating barriers the A&E Committee faces. As a Committee, we will continue to brainstorm to plan

READY, SET...SHRED-IT! By Rashawnda Daniels-Atkinson On Saturday, October 16, the Association reserved the Shred-It truck to assist residents with safely disposing of old paper records, magazines, receipts and such that are no longer wanted.

Items shredded at the event are torn onsite into confettisized pieces using Shred-It’s unique cross-cut shredding technology according to the company’s website. Shred-It adds another layer of security by mixing the shredded documents with other jobs that are done during the same day.

At this petfriendly event sponsored by the Pet Committee, there will be prizes, take-aways and even some goodies for our furry friends! All pet owners must be present at the event to win. The event includes a live Doggy Costume Contest and a Kitty (and Non-Canine) Photo Costume Contest. Dogs must be present at the event to participate; participants in the Doggy Costume Contest must be present on the Upper Terrace by 11am for judging. Cats and other animals need not be present; judges will select the winner based on photos entries received. Winners for both contests will be chosen prior to the Pet Parade. READY, SET...FIRE! RESIDENT WINS AT 2021 NOVA SR. OLYMPICS By Rashawnda Daniels-Atkinson It’s one thing to think about competing in Olympic competition. Entering, showing up and winning a medal? That puts you on a completely different level. And that’s what Bldg. 2 resident John Flynn did at the 39th Annual Northern Virginia Senior Olympics where he earned a silver medal in the 800km Power Walk and a bronze in the 60-m dash in the 64 69 year old age bracket. That is especially impressive because John accomplished this feat in his first Olympics competition after having double knee replacements. But he didn’t allow this hurdle to hinder him. Following is a conversation with the Senior Olympic winner about the race, training process and thoughts leading up to the race.
How did you feel leading up to the race?
“I was a little nervous at first. But after awhile I became energized by all the activity. Everyone was friendly and in a positive, yet competitive spirit...some participants were definitely there to win! After the opening ceremony, the track and field competition began. At the start of each race, you could hear the [announcer] say, ‘Ready, set…’ Then the starter gun fired. The sound of the gun was louder than I expected but I got used to it after a few races. It helped that I saw the women compete first. I got to see the process and flow for each event.”
It’s good your nerves settled.
“Indeed. I was determined to compete and do my very best. It helped that my wife Gina, my daughter Danielle—who made a sign that said, ‘Go Dad, Go!’—and Ashley, a family friend, were there to cheer me on. To be honest, I was relieved when it was over. That’s when my nerves completely calmed down and I was able to enjoy the remaining events.”

What were you thinking when you won?
“When you set out to do something and you actually do it, you feel good about yourself. Once my races were over, I said to myself, ‘John, you did it! You competed and you won!”
What inspired you to sign up for this competition?
“Competing in the Senior Olympics has been on my bucket list for quite some time. Over the years I saw commercials or read about the Senior Olympics and I was thoroughly impressed by the athletic ability of men and women in their 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. I said to myself, ‘When I become a senior, I’m going to do it. I’m going to enter the Senior Olympics for the fun of it and if I win a medal, all the better. Then, as luck would have it one of the Pickleball players sent an email message to the group [with information about this year’s Senior Olympics]. I clicked on the link and registered for events that very day. It was about five or six weeks before the competition began.”
What made you choose track and field?
“I wanted to start with something I was familiar with. I ran track briefly in high school and I walk every day, so I decided to try those two events [Power Walk and 60m dash] for this Olympics.”

went to the Fitness Center as well on a regular basis. There, I used the stationary bike, rowing machine and elliptical machine as tools to improve my endurance and speed.”
Did you keep that training schedule throughout?
“After those first few weeks, I slowed down. But once the date grew closer, I started to get nervous. I said to myself, ‘This is it, John. You’ve got to get serious. You want to win a medal, don’t you? Otherwise, what is the point of doing it?’ So, I started really ramping up my training until the day of the race.”
Do you plan to compete again?
“Oh yes, I plan to compete more often and in more events. I hope to do it every year. I met so many people, and everyone is really positive.”
“I was determined to...do my very best.” How long did you train?
“For the first two or three weeks, I trained every day. I’d walk one or two miles...sometimes three on the yellow brick road [walking trail]. I also rode my bike 3—5 miles around the community. Getting advice from YouTube videos helped me gradually increase my endurance and speed. I

What would you say to someone who might want to compete?
“It’s something you must really want to do because it takes work if you hope to win a medal. Develop a realistic training plan, start training early, pace yourself, and stick to your plan. Finally, and most importantly, have fun with it! October 2021
IF YOU BUILD IT… By Zohreh Khoshnamak, Youth Committee The Science Club of WAL Youth Committee brought together some aspiring young architects, city planners and builders on August 28 at our first-ever Box City Event. Attendees constructed buildings and city facilities using cardboard boxes, paint and their imaginations. We had a City Hall that would’ve made Mayor Wilson envious, a hospital, restaurants, homes, and even an airport. Abed Benzina, our amazing architect from Bldg. 1, drew the city layout based on the City of Alexandria on the Lower Terrace with the help of Alexandria High School Robotic Team. The kids then filled their land “parcels.”

“I had a great time helping out with the Box City event. Kids designed different types of buildings and built them using cardboard,” said Abdel Elnoubi, a WAL resident and professional engineer who volunteered at Box City. The kids had to obtain a “building permit” based on their plans. Then, they were assigned a lot, got their construction material from the hardware store and received their certificate after a visit by the city inspector. Thank you to all the volunteers from WAL and the community including Patricia Espinet who issued the building permits, Hossein Golkar who ran the hardware store, volunteers who handed out paint and supplies and our city inspectors (including Abdel Elnoubi, Zee Almaliky and Arezou from Bldg. 2). “It was a fantastic day, especially as I helped the kids turn the raw ideas in their heads into actual projects and buildings. These types of events help develop and formalize their creativity. I was happy to help...” Arezou commented.

Attendees had fun socializing with one another and there were a few prizes given away as well. Who Can Vote?

Submit your application, update your voter registration information and confirm your registration status at https:// vote.elections.virginia.gov.
Ballot Drop Boxes Election Day is Tuesday, November 2.
The 2021 General Election will be on Tuesday, November 2. Voters will cast votes for Virginia Governor (3 candidates); Lieutenant Governor (2 candidates); Attorney General (2 candidates); Mayor (2 candidates); City Council (9 candidates) and the School Board (3 candidates). There is only one candidate running for The House of Delegates, Commonwealth’s Attorney and Sheriff openings in Alexandria. There is also a write-in option for each contest.

This year, ballot drop boxes will be available at all regular polling places on Election Day from 6 a.m. - 7 p.m. There will also be one available during the early voting times at Beatley Library starting Friday, October 22. The Voter Registration Office (132 N. Royal Street) will have a drop box accessible to voters 24/7. It will be under video surveillance until it is collected at 7 p.m. on November 2, 2021.
In-Person Absentee Voting
Regular hours for in-person absentee voting are Monday – Friday from 8 a.m.

The deadline to vote in-person absentee is Saturday, October 30 by 5 p.m. To help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and in accordance with local requirements, each person at an early voting location must wear a face covering the nose and mouth while keeping at least 6 feet apart from others.
