A PLACE WHERE EVERYTHING IS WITHIN REACH Whether it’s babysitters, a grocery store, or nature trails, meet two couples who are finding everything they need in Westport, Ontario

oris Jackson needed an orange.
That’s the only encouragement her husband, Lorne, needed. He hopped on his bike, left their home at Watercolour, rolled down the tree-lined streets of Westport, waved at neighbours, peddled past quaint shops and cafes opening for the morning until he got to the grocery store by the lake. He was back home in 15 minutes. Problem solved. Recipe completed. Such is life for the Jacksons, living in a perfect home in
cottage country, where almost everything is at their doorstep. The Jacksons married 55 years ago this August. Early in their marriage they lived in different cities until settling in Ottawa. Until recently, a cottage near Picton, Ontario offered them respite from the city. They enjoyed the cottage but don’t miss the gravel roads and managing an extra home. Since moving to Westport, Doris has fallen in love with the sense of community at Watercolour. There’s a closeness between people that you don’t find elsewhere, encouraged by
big front porches that invite conversation and by the fact that you can walk everywhere – to the library, the coffee shop, and to get oranges at the grocery store. The Jacksons walk for 45 minutes every day. It takes them 35 minutes to circle the village. Lorne has a route that he likes that brings him down to the marina where he meets visitors from North Carolina, Virginia… people from all across North America docking their boats while they travel the historic Rideau Waterway. Since moving to Westport, Doris has fallen in love with the sense of community at Watercolour. There’s a closeness between people that you don’t find elsewhere, encouraged by big front porches that invite conversation and by the fact that you can walk everywhere. Walking around Westport has helped Lorne and Doris Jackson build a rich community around them.
Back home, the Jacksons sip their morning coffee on their front porch. They eat dinner in their screened-in sunroom. Life is unfolding with greater ease and joy in Westport. A few doors down from the Jacksons live Raghav Sharma and Raman Kaur, a young family attracted to Westport for very different reasons. Raghav and Raman moved to Westport for a business opportunity, but are putting roots down because of the kindness of neighbours. Raghav and Raman met in India as classmates while completing their Bachelor of Engineering degrees. They were both in electronics and communications and became best friends. There they learned to design computer chips and circuit boards. He moved to Canada in 2016. She stayed back to continue with her Masters of Engineering.
the baby from one of the neighbours, they say they want to keep him longer,” laughs Raghav. “Once we had to leave him with friends in Westport for a couple of hours and word got out. So many people came by their house to see him.” Sidewalks, trails, a school within a short walk… Watercolour is a great place for a family. The young couple chose the Oak Haven model at Watercolour. Raghav’s favourite thing about the home is the spacious living area. He’s an extrovert and loves hosting friends and family. The
front porch is a great place for people to spill outside too. “A large front porch is so rare,” says Raman. “In Mississauga we never saw houses like this. We sit outside all the time.” Each new person moving into Watercolour is discovering a different reason to fall in love with this gem in Eastern Ontario’s cottage country.
As it neared the time when she should get married, Raman’s parents started talking about finding a suitable husband. “But I told them, I have a best friend,” she says. “I’d like to marry him.” Raghav returned to India, married Raman, and the two came to Canada to start their life. They took over management of the Esso station in Westport in 2020 during COVID, having barely visited the village. None of their friends in the GTA had even heard of Westport. Despite the fact that everything was new, Raghav says that when he heads back to Brampton to visit friends, he only has to hit Scarborough to remember why he loves living in Westport. He says the city is crowded. He says Toronto doesn’t feel like a safe place to raise a family. The couple have a new baby boy. Friends and family are visiting to help and their house is often full of people. “We know so many people around here and they are so nice,” says Raman. “I will love my child to grow up with them. When we have no one to take care of our baby, the people in the village are always ready.” The young family is much loved and cared for in the village. “Sometimes when we go to get

FALL FAVOURITE Nearby to Watercolour you can find many farms and agricultural opportunities to discover. A favourite tradition for many is visiting a pumpkin patch in the fall season. The brightly coloured gourds and warm colours of the fall leaves are simply delightful. One of the nearby farms, Ferrier’s Scotch Line Farm, is owned and operated by a family who have farmed there for nine generations. Each year they offer a wonderful experience for their guests who enjoy the sunflowers, jams, pies and friendly hospitality at the farm. Visit www.scotchlinefarm.com for hours and to plan your visit. Scotch Line Farm’s Pumpkin Pie What you’ll need : 2 eggs
1/2 tsp Ginger
1 1/2 Cups Pumpkin or Pumpkin Puree
1/4 tsp Cloves
1/4 Cup Brown Sugar (firmly packed)
Pinch of All-Spice
1/2 Cup White Sugar 1 1/2 tsp. Cinnamon
1/4 tsp Nutmeg 1 1/2 Cups Evaporated Milk 1 Pie Crust
1/2 tsp. Salt Mix eggs and pumpkin together. Set aside. Combine brown sugar, white sugar, salt, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, nutmeg and all-spice. Blend together with pumpkin mixture. Stir in evaporated milk. Line pie plate with crust and Bake at 425o for 15 minutes then 350o for 40 more minutes. Enjoy!

A lookout trail to Spy Rock is a favourite hiking spot for tourists and locals alike, providing the best vantage point overlooking the historic Upper Rideau Lake. One of the stunning vistas is the cover photo for this edition of Front Porch Life. If you haven’t been to Foley Mountain yet, it’s a must see. The history of Foley Mountain dates back centuries, beginning with the Indigenous peoples who lived in harmony with the natural surroundings and recognized its beauty and abundant resources. Before confederation, Declan Finbar Foley arrived in Westport as one of its first families. His ambitious goal was to own everything that could be seen from his General Store window on Main Street, including Foley Mountain.

isitors fall in love with Westport. Watercolour residents experience even more by calling the village “home.”
Westport is a village full of energy in the summer. Visitors are drawn to the village with its bustling harbour, quaint village shops, and the restaurants and cafes near the water. They dream of moving their lives from the cramped city to this idyllic community surrounded by stunning lakes and forests. But few of them could. Watercolour has opened up this beautiful cottage town and idyllic summer retreat to newcomers. The walkable community has been carefully planned to dovetail seamlessly with village life. An important part of making a place feel like home is finding local friends and community. The Westport Lions Club is one of the beloved local institutions that helps create a rich community. By joining the club, newcomers to Westport find a place where they belong. People who have been here for generations welcome new faces and show them the hidden treasures known only to the people who have lived here for a lifetime. A lot of towns have volunteer clubs. Few are as effective as the Westport Lions Club. Since the club was founded in 1946, club members have built and maintained many of the most treasured features of the village.
Foley Mountain Conservation Area overlooks Upper Rideau Lake and Westport. It features a variety of wildlife in 325 hectares of woods, ponds and fields... and over 6 km of hiking trails.
Declan’s descendants accomplished this goal then later passed the mountain along to the government with instructions to preserve its natural beauty. In 1970 the land was purchased by the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority with other parcels being added, and now over 800 acres are encompassed in the protected parkland.
Residents of Watercolour are very familiar with the Westport Lions Beach. They often grab towels and walk in flip flops down to the beach for a quick swim in the calm waters of Sand Lake. Young people play beach volleyball. On July 1, neighbours carry their lawnchairs down to the beach to celebrate Canada Day.
Foley Mountain Conservation Area has played a vital role in promoting environmental awareness and education. Through guided hikes, nature workshops and interactive displays, visitors of all ages have gained a deeper understanding of ecological systems, biodiversity and the importance of conservation efforts. Long time site supervisor, Rebecca Whitman, lives on site and delivers outdoor education programs for school children, day campers and families each year. The mountain welcomed 2,671 students for in-person outdoor education programs in 2022, including forest school sessions in spring and fall. Continuing to inspire generations to appreciate, respect and protect our natural world is an essential part of the programming at Foley. In every season visitors enjoy Foley Mountain’s abundant forests and 10 km of trails through a wide range of habitats and landscapes. Immersing ourselves in nature can have a restorative effect on our mental and emotional well-being. Snowshoeing in winter and hiking year round can improve cardiovascular health, contribute to a sense of well being and enhance our immune system. Living in Westport grants you the opportunity to enjoy this park right at your doorstep. The Friends of Foley Mountain is a non-profit group that was established in 1996 and is on a mission to preserve and maintain the Foley Mountain Conservation Area in its natural state for the enjoyment and education of present and future generations. This charitable organization is committed to continue the grand legacy that was established so many years ago. Here’s to the next 50 years. It’s time to go take a hike!
The Lions Club Beach is one of the jewels in the area. During the summer season, 25 volunteers cut the grass weekly and clean the beach and washrooms seven days a week. A recent survey ranked the Westport Lions Club Beach as the best community beach in Eastern Ontario.
The Lions Club also operates a mobility van that shuttles people to health care and other appointments. It’s run by Lions Club volunteers. But it’s more than just philanthropy that makes the Westport Lions Club an important part of the community. Membership in the club remains strong because of the friendships that have developed over the years. Club members play golf together, do an annual trip to the Thousand Islands Playhouse in Gananoque, Ontario, and host an annual convention for other Lions Clubs in the district. The Westport Lions Club has been recognized as a model club in the area. For those who choose life at Watercolour, the Westport Lions Club helps make Westport home. WAT E R C O L O U RW E S T P O RT. SEED TO SAUSAGE You’ll find Seed to Sausage cured meats and other delicacies at restaurants across Ontario. The store also offers local artisanal foods from other producers in Frontenac County.
K&P & TRANS CANADA RAIL TRAIL INTERSECTION The K&P is a trail cycler’s dream, having been recently upgraded from Kingston to Clarendon Station, with new sections being refurbished annually all the way north to the Ottawa Valley. BELONG SHARBOT Opened in 2023 by renowned Canadian chef and television personality Brad Long, Belong Sharbot is arguably one of the best restaurants between Ottawa and Toronto.
KICK & PUSH BREWERY Stop at this great microbrewery and pub and enjoy their award-winning beer. The outdoor shaded picnic area and indoor lounge make it a great stop in any season. Ask for a beer flight to taste a number of their beers.

DAY 2 FOLEY MOUNTAIN The mountain is only a few steps out of downtown Westport. It’s worth the stop if you enjoy trail walking. Here you will find a magnificent view of Westport and its surrounding lakes.
PERTH Perth is one of Eastern Ontario’s gems. Stewart Park is an historic town park, named one of the seven wonders of Lanark County. In Perth you’ll find beautiful architecture, a distillery, shopping galore and an irresistible chocolate shop, not to mention plenty of pubs and restaurants, some with waterfront patio seating.
RIDEAU FERRY The drive south from Perth takes you past rolling hills and beautiful horse barns. When you reach Rideau Ferry, you’ll find CC’s on the Rideau restaurant and a big dock where locals dock their boats while they eat.
OPINICON LODGE The Opinicon has been an important landmark in the area since 1896. Over its history it was a private residence, a rooming house, a private fishing club, a family resort, and the restaurant/pub everyone enjoys today.

en years ago I thought I’d built my last home. Then I went for a walk that changed my life.
It changed my life. We’d been building award-winning communities for years. But this was something even better.
Since 1988, my wife and I have built close to 400 homes in the Ottawa area. We thought we were done 10 years ago when we finished our last home in the Land Ark Homes Badour Farms development.
Our country needs walkable communities where everything you need is within reach, where neighbours feel connected – to each other and to nature.
We were proud of our work. We had a team of craftsmen building beautiful homes that have become the pride and heritage for countless families. We’ve won multiple awards, including America’s Best Builder. It felt like we’d achieved everything we wanted to.

And then I went for that walk. I was traveling in Niagara-on-the-Lake when I came upon “The Village,” a development designed by world-renowned architect and town planner, Andrés Duany. I sensed an instant connection to this inspired place. The house designs are different and varied. This wasn’t the typical lifeless tract development. It’s a walkable community with wide sidewalks and big front porches. I returned to building homes because I felt I could make a difference by providing homes in a walkable village I had grown to love. I believe it’s important to follow your calling. Around the same time I heard about Net Zero homes from a research scientist friend. He told me about a whole new way of building homes that made it possible for a home to produce as much energy as it consumes over the course of a year. Even in Canada!
By this time I was mentoring other homebuilders and got excited. I saw the opportunity for the developers to create land plans and communities that are walkable and builders to create homes that are Net Zero and Net Zero Ready, more sustainable homes that are fossil-fuel free and all electric. I also saw few were interested in changing. You see, every developer has a system. Every process and step needs to be optimized. Interrupt their process with thicker walls, different windows, more insulation, a
FRONT PORCH LIFE different roofline, or a new way to pour a foundation, and all of sudden they’re completely disrupted. And besides, since they couldn’t keep up with demand for new homes, why make a change that would add more cost if consumers weren’t asking for it?
and cooling, electric hot water heaters, LED lights, and a super-tight building envelope. The homes also come equipped with an EV charging rough-in in the garage. The electrification of homes is the way forward and Land Ark is leading the way.
In my heart, I knew that doing things the same way I had in the past wasn’t good enough for the future. It was time for a new direction and time to assemble a new team.
The entire community is at least Net Zero Ready. The proof of concept is in. There are 25 families living in these beautiful homes in the completed first phase, living more sustainably than they could anywhere else in Eastern Ontario. They’ve also become part of a treasured village and enjoy the bountiful opportunities that surround them all year long.
The vast majority of the 286,000 new homes in Canada are being built to an obsolete building code that hasn’t changed much since I started in construction in 1982. Of the new homes built in 2022, only 425 were Net Zero or Net Zero Ready. I believe people deserve a home that will last and not one that is already obsolete while it’s still brand new. That’s why every home at Watercolour Westport is certified Net Zero Ready and fossil-fuel free. These highperformance homes are being built to a code that won’t be enforced until 2035. We’re doing things differently than almost any other builder in the country. Our homes have an exterior insulation blanket above grade, and spray-foam on the interior foundation wall and below the basement slab to eliminate thermal bridging, triple-paned windows, cold-climate air source heat pumps for heating
We’ve come a long way. My first job after graduating from the University of Toronto Mississauga was as a superintendent for a homebuilder. Then, 33 years ago, my wife and I built our company’s first home on an infill lot in Stittsville, ON. I could have never dreamed I’d end up here building a walkable, energy inflation proof, sustainable community - it’s a historic and remarkable time to be building homes. I’m glad to be back.

ornelia Schuster was about to throw the flyers in the recycling bin. And then something caught her eye. Was that the Land Ark Homes logo? She fished the papers out of the blue box. The Schusters lived in a Land Ark Home in Stittsville for 25 years. They fell in love with the home at first sight in 1998. They loved their home. But last they heard the owners of Land Ark had moved on to building bigger homes that didn’t suit their lifestyle.

And then Cornelia saw the Land Ark Homes logo in the bin and she wanted to take a closer look. She’s glad she did. “My husband enjoys woodworking as a hobby,” says Cornelia. “He knows when things are built well.” Cornelia says that back in 1998, her husband noticed straight lines and saw that their Land Ark Home in Stittsville was framed perfectly. Unlike many homeowners, her husband saw the triple hinges on the doors.
Just like in Stittsville 25 years ago, Land Ark Homes is taking the time to build communities. “We were recently invited to a BBQ that allowed us to meet many of the people on our street that we hadn’t met yet,” says Cornelia. “This was all organized by Land Ark. They really care. It’s about much more than just building houses for them.” Even casual walks through the village with their daughter reinforce their confidence that they have found a special place to call home.
