HISTORY OF WA SUNG
In the early 1920’s, young Oakland Chinese boys and men formed a social club called the Chinese 9. They played sandlot baseball and were sponsored by Maxwell Hardware Store. Later, they joined in regional baseball games and in 1926 became Wa Sung Athletic Club. These semi-pro players had many admiring Chinese fans. They had events such as Amateur Night, trips out of town, Raisin Festival, dinner parties, and Christmas parties, all revolving around this influential baseball team. The club disbanded in 1938.
In July 1952, the nucleus baseball club reorganized for the express purpose of one objective – “an organization whose purpose is to perform service to the Chinese Community and to promote understanding and goodwill and friendship amongst its citizens.” In 1953, it held its first installation dinner dance and monthly meetings to initiate charitable and educational services; and to promote goodwill, understanding and friendship amongst all. Thus, Wa Sung Service Club was formed. Its first president was Joseph Lee. From these original 16 men, primarily born and raised in Oakland, the men of Wa Sung showed a common interest and purpose, attracting many professional businessmen to join the club.
In 1979, President Walter Wong convinced the Wa Sung Board of Directors to allow women to join. The first woman was Linda Yu, a TV broadcaster. Joyce Cheng was the second woman to join; and in 1982, she became Member of the Year – our club’s highest recognition. Josephine Hui became Member of the Year in 1983 and was the first woman president in 1985.
In 2001, Wa Sung Service Club changed its name to reflect and reconfirm our basic goal in our club name: community. Thus, we became Wa Sung Community Service Club.
In 2010, as part of Wa Sung’s 5-Year Plan (2010 – 2015) Goal #1, we established the Wa Sung Junior League for young adults who are 17 to 25 years of age. Our club roster includes members of all ages, races, and ethnic backgrounds, with diverse occupations. Wa Sung has grown from a small group to its current membership of over 200 members.
In 2011, we opened the Wa Sung Community Center at the Oakland Asian Cultural Center, which accomplished Goal #2 of our 5-Year Plan. Successful implementation of Wa Sung’s goals enables us to continue our commitment of providing service to the community.
In 2014, Wa Sung established the Capital Fund. This fund was created to support Wa Sung’s long-term goal of eventually purchasing an office (home) and/or income property to help fund Wa Sung’s community service activities.
In 2018, Wa Sung’s prized collection of artifacts from the Wa Sung Athletic Club was donated to the Bancroft Library at UC Berkeley. The donated materials, which consisted of photos and scoring records from 1927 - 1932, are among the oldest available records of organized baseball among Chinese Americans in the country.

Wa Sung Young Professional League
Formed in 2010, Wa Sung Young Professional League, formerly known as Wa Sung Junior League, aimed at developing leadership skills and fostering the spirit of community service for young people between ages 17 and 35.
Wa Sung Community Directory (Book)
This is an annual directory of primarily Oakland Chinatown and related community information provided in a useful multilingual format. It is also an important advertising outlet for community businesses. Distribution begins on Easter Sunday at the Easter Pancake Breakfast. Merit Scholarship Awards
Each year, the Merit Scholarship Awards Committee reviews over 50 applications from senior high school students for the selection of approximately 16 scholarships. Winners are selected based on leadership, academics, community service and financial need. The major part or the awards are derived from the Perpetual Scholarship Fund and from direct donations from members and other patrons.
Educational Grants
We proudly sponsor and offer an incentive to students to attain their best in their educational experiences and knowledge. Since 1991, Wa Sung has provided seed money or supplemental educational materials to schools and non-profit organizations for innovative projects in response to the social, cultural and educational needs of a diverse community. Projects include book programs, tutorial programs, family projects, storytelling, art & sciences, conferences, cultural events, classroom projects and leadership training.
Wa Sung Charity Grants
We offer charitable ‘seed money’ donations to other tax-exempt organizations that are in alignment with Wa Sung’s mission statement and eligibility requirements.
Easter Pancake Breakfast
This annual “Stacks and Sausages” tradition occurs each Easter Sunday morning held in Oakland Chinatown at the Lincoln Square Playground (Lincoln School). All ages are invited. Entertainment and hourly raffles also attract a crowd of over 1,000 every year.
Fundraisers and Events
Wa Sung conducts several fundraisers and events a year for scholarships and other projects – Charity Gala in February, Easter Pancake Breakfast on Easter morning, Merit Awards in May, Golf Tournament in August , Young Professional League Badminton Tournament, Santa’s Visits in December, and other events. The Wa Sung Community Service Club, pursuant to its goals, ideas and by-laws, dedicates itself to greater service to the Oakland – East Bay Asian community and declares as its primary purpose:
• Fostering understanding among all people of our community;
• Encouraging the recognition and preservation of the ethnic and cultural diversity of our community;
• Seeking to establish a community in which every person is encouraged to reach his or her highest potential;
• Assisting the Oakland – East Bay to become a community in which all residents work together in a climate of creative cooperation and peace.
Accordingly, this club shall devote the majority of its service and money to:
• Developing a membership of community leaders committed to the foregoing purposes;
• Implementing programs to aid youth in obtaining academic and vocational education and employment;
• Implementing programs to aid in improving community relations and understanding;
• Supporting cultural and recreational activities.

OCA-ASIAN PACIFIC AMERICAN ADVOCATES

OCA National (www.ocanational.org) is one of the nation’s oldest Asian-focused civil rights organizations with volunteer chapters across the country and national center in Washington, D.C. OCA East Bay (www.ocaeastbay.org) has been around since 1987 with roots in Oakland Chinatown focused on civic participation and leadership development. Ten years ago, board members at the time Francis Lan, Brian Li, Michael Lok, Michael and May Moon were thinking of ways OCA East Bay could help where we could and after brainstorming a list, trash cleanup was identified as something doable that could help the Oakland Chinatown community.
We founded the PickITup Chinatown as a monthly community engagement program which is not only measured by how many trash bag get filled, but also teaching volunteers about what it means to feel pride and ownership of their community. Through the decade, we have activated over a thousand volunteers and have cleared hundreds of pounds of trash, flagged illegal dumping, disrupted a lot of graffiti and co-led improvements at Wilma Chan Park (e.g. tree planting, lighting improvements, etc.). No one, including the co-founders, would have predicted we would be running monthly events for the better part of ten years including during the COVID pandemic.
Asian Youth Services Committee (AYSC) has been an active partner almost the whole time, and it has been fulfilling to engage generations of AYSC youth leaders, overseen by leaders like AYSC Advisor and Past Wa Sung President Richard Fong.
Our volunteer base has been multi-generational and in our tenth year we hope everyone who helps understands that civic engagement does not end with voting. A LEGACY OF EXCELLENCE: THE WA SUNG MERIT SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

For nearly seven decades, the Wa Sung Merit Scholarship Awards have reflected the organization’s enduring commitment to education, service, and community leadership. Archival newsletters indicate scholarships were awarded as early as 1957. By 1962, awards of $50 were given, increasing to $200 by 1977.
A major milestone came in 1983 with the creation of the Perpetual Scholarship Fund (PSF), launched with a $2,000 donation from Mr. M.G. Tshi of Hong Kong. Designed to provide longterm financial stability, the PSF allows named endowments of $10,000 or more, preserving principal while using investment earnings to fund scholarships. Over time, contributions from members and supporters built a strong foundation, ensuring consistent awards independent of annual fundraising.
By the early 1990s, scholarship amounts had risen to $500, with up to 18 awarded in a single year. In 1994, Wa Sung reported that more than 500 scholarships had been granted since the program’s inception. From 2001 to 2018, the standard award was $1,000. A special $2,500 scholarship debuted in 2010 and has been awarded annually since 2017. In 2018, the base award increased to $1,500.
The Merit Awards ceremony has featured distinguished keynote speakers, including Justice Ming W. Chin, Judy Ma, Janelle Bitker, and Phong La, Alameda County Assessor (2025). Notably, several recipients later returned as leaders and speakers, including 2017 awardee Linyi Yu, now serving as president, and past scholars Judy Ma and Janelle Bitker.
Even during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Wa Sung continued the tradition virtually. Beginning in 2026, scholarships will increase to $2,000, with the Community Service Award rising to $3,000—affirming Wa Sung’s lasting investment in future generations.
