Letter from the Puzzle Makers Dear Puzzlers, College is a stage of life filled to the brim with puzzles. On a daily basis, these puzzles take the form of rigorous problem sets, busy Google calendars, and complicated social situations. In a broader sense, we are all working to solve the puzzle of who we are and what we find meaningful. While we can’t answer those big life questions for you, we can offer you an issue full of carefully crafted puzzles that do have answers. We are thrilled to publish the inaugural PuzzLife issue. Student Life added a Games section in 2024, and since then we’ve offered WashU-themed mini crosswords on the StudLife website. Over the past two years,
our section has expanded from two people to a whole staff of contributors. The Games section has created a space for puzzle-lovers to come together on campus, and we value the opportunity to create crosswords for the WashU community. In the puzzle world, crosswords are only the tip of the iceberg. From word puzzles to logic puzzles to number puzzles to picture puzzles, the scope of the puzzle world is far broader than most people realize. Through PuzzLife, we hope to highlight the wide variety of puzzles that we puzzle enthusiasts know and love. These puzzles were made by WashU students, for the WashU community. We strove to incorporate as many St. Louis and

This issue would not have been possible without the unwavering dedication of the entire StudLife staff. We deeply appreciate the countless hours that the
staff have poured into helping our puzzles come to life. As the semester ramps up and midterms descend upon us, we sincerely hope that these puzzles give you and your friends a chance to have fun and unwind together. Happy solving! Rena and Mac

Tips and tricks for solving cryptograms:
1. Look for one-letter words first! They have to be either A or I. 2. Two and three-letter words can give you a way into the puzzle too. Some common ones to look out for are: THE, AND, ARE, TO, OF, AN, IS, and IT. 3. The letter after an apostrophe must be an S or a T. 4. Analyze the letter frequency box. In this case, the frequencies of I, K, and M have the highest frequency in the cipher text, so they most likely solve to common English letters.

Fill in the missing letters WORDto reveal a quote from Andy Cohen’s 2026 WashU Commencement address: The letters in the top half of the puzzle indicate which letters belong in each of the columns of the grid below. For example, in the first column, the blank squares will contain the letters E, E, H, I, N, R, T, and W in some order. In this column, the locations of the letters W, T, and I have been given to you. When you figure out which letter from the letter bank goes in which square in the grid, you will reveal a quote from Andy Cohen’s 2026 WashU Commencement address.

Nonograms
The numbers on the side of the nonogram grid denote how many shaded squares are in that row or column. If numbers are in different boxes, then there will be one or more blank squares between each set of indicated shaded squares (you cannot have two sets of shaded squares without a blank square between them).
PuzzLife | Student Life 31
PICTURE
Tips: Find all rows or columns that mostly consist of shaded squares. Then, identify any squares in a row or column that will be shaded no matter where the block of shaded squares is positioned. E.g. in a row of 10 squares with a block of seven shaded squares, there are four blocks in the center of the row that will be shaded no matter the positioning of the seven shaded squares.
