01 TRANSECTS
pg.3
Located in Stockport, ‘Transects’ tasked me to create a mixed use residential / commercial proposal for a vacant lot in the city centre. Being the first residential project in our course, I specifically enjoyed learning about thermal and visual comfort, and how a design choice can affect human behaviour on a small scale.
02 PROJEKTS MCR
pg.16
Right under the Mancunian way overpass, Projekts MCR is a community skate park, designed to create an inclusive community through skating. My task was to create an extension, which would house a restaurant, additional skating area and community space.

TRANSECTS Design studio project, 2023 , year 2 - sem 1 Design 3 dwellings with an associated creative space in Stockport, carefully considering the environment and the built context.
Located 10 minutes away from central Manchester by train, Stockport is a colorful p l a c e f u l l o f d i v e r s i t y. D u e t o r e c e n t i n v e s t m e n t s i t h a s a t t r a c t e d a n e w w a v e of people looking to settle somewhere with the vividness of a big city and the community feel of a small town.
The roughly 19 by 9m site is enclosed on 3 sides, and has a significant level change (7m) between it’s 2 supposed access points. Direct sunlight is scarce, therefore the design is shifted towards the North, and higher to negate the shading effect of the neighbouring building.
Stockport’s rich history of timber buildings became the main design driver for the proposal. In tudor houses the principal or the secondary structural frame became the main decorating element in the envelope, much like Richard Rogers’ Chifley 8. The massive cantilevered volumes gave me the idea to create openings in the b u i l d i n g t o a l l o w o n l o o k e r s a p e e k t h r o u g h o n t o t h e c i t y. `

PROJEKTS MCR Design studio project, year 1 - sem 2 Design an extension to Projekts MCR skatepark, a restaurant / cafe and appropriate creative space.
SITE
Located in the city centre, Projekts MCR serves to introduce marginalized communities to skating. In the middle of a diverse neighbourhood comprising of students, social workers and people of all ages, it is a meeting point of cultures. I propose a culinary school alongside the restaurant as my creative space, as a way to help the community combat the rising cost of living in the UK.

DESIGN DRIVERS
For the skatepark design, I intende d t o c h a l l e n g e P r o j e k t s ’ p h i l o s p h y, which prides itself on accessibility yet charges a high price for said access. Instead, my proposal would be a free of charge separate park. Instead of fixed features, highly modular pieces can be moved around, creating different lines or making space for other events.

Akin to the High Loop concept, I adopted Le Corbusier’s ‘Streets in the sky’ p h i l o s p h y, w h e r e p e d e s t r i a n c i r c u l a tion and amenities linked to it are lifted above car traffic.
FORM DEVELOPMENT 1

Establishing the vertically stacked design. restaurant
2 Rotating 90 degrees to create a terrace.
3 The rigid form does not fit skating’s nature.
4 Adding ramps to create a more dynamic form.
5
Using the negative spaces of ramps to make it even more free flowing.

COLLECTION OF WORKS
Selection of works from various projects and modules throughout year 1 / 2.
Modular Pavillion Technologies module, year 1 Tasked to design a modular pavillion, and build a 1:50 model by way of lasercutting. To create the intricate scale-like design, I learned basic parametric modeling with grasshopper, cultivating my interest in computer aided design.
SCALES Provide acoustic insulation and block out the light. After testing different shapes, the deltoid was found to be most efficient.
JOINTS Since the model is laser-cut, the connection between the panels and the primary structure that would only utilize 90 degree cuts.
COLLUMNS Arching inwards, the primary structure is comprised of MDF collums with connecting elements that keep it stable, and let it covert the vertical loads to horizonotal through compression.
CLOSED LOOP BEAMS In the 1:50 Model they prevent the structure from collapsing, acting similar to rafters.
CASE STUDY OF 3, SIMON SQUARE
Technologies module, year 2
A closer look at a new build residential development, analysing design choices based on climate and drawing an axonometric wall buildup, as a demonstration of understanding a typical CLT construction.
Location: Edinburgh, Scotland Year : 2022 Architect: Fraser / Livingstone Structure: Mass Timber Construction - CLT Envelope Brickwork + Lime Slaister Located in the north of the UK, Edinburgh experiences relatively cool summers and mild winters, with temperatures moderated by the nearby North Atlantic Drift.

30 Mild temperatures and light but consistent rainfall resulting in high humidity levels throughout the year. The house’s breathable design regulates moisture levels within the building, preventing trapped moisture, condensation and mold growth. Sunpath
By shifting the top level towards the north, the design provides more surface are for indirect heat gain reducing energy costs, and the inclusion of large, floor to ceiling windows improve visual comfort.
Manufactured from softwood, CLT is a durable and sustainable method of Panel based construction. Utilizing loadbearing walls and CLT slabs, it is the Primary Structure of the Building. By placing the loadbearing walls in roughly the same location throughout all floors, the load is transferred down without placing additional mass on the slabs. Pros: Sustainable Strong Carbon sequestering 2-way spanning Breathable Cons: Fire safety risk Heavy use of unsustainable adhesives

By doing so, they distribute the load evenly over a larger area, helping to prevent differential settlement and ensuring stability.
