The phenomenal central performance from Mirren alone makes the film worth seeing but the supporting cast includes Alfred Molina, Tom Conti, Russell Brand and Ben Whishaw.

It’s a bit like buses, you wait for one for ages, then a bunch come along all at once. So it is with French cinema it appears! But it has been worth the wait. A cluster of familiar names are here: Luc Besson, whose The Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec, an ‘Indiana Jones in a dress’, is spectacular and will delight audiences of all ages. Gerard Depardieu returns to the big screen in Mammuth, a droll tale of a man obliged to revisit his past to assure his pension. This is directed by Gustave de Kervern and Benoît Delépine, who brought us the outrageous Aaltra a few years back. Now they have Mammuth and Louise-Michel, a magnificently dark comedy of redundancy and revenge starring the unforgettable Yolande Moreau. The Full Monty, this ain’t!

Complemented by a fun soundtrack from Elton John this is a treat for the whole family. (And the ending’s not as grim as Shakespeare!)

Fergus (Womack) returns to his native Liverpool for the funeral of his childhood friend Frankie (Bishop), a fellow private security contractor who has been killed on ‘Route Irish’, the deadly and now infamous stretch of road between Baghdad airport and the Green Zone. Refusing to accept the official account of his best friend’s death, Fergus launches his own investigation, fuelled by the discovery of a cell phone on which Frankie had recorded the shooting of an innocent Iraqi family just days before his own death. As his investigation ramps up Fergus soon draws the heat of those he is investigating and a once dirty foreign war is transferred to the streets of Liverpool and pursued on home turf. Ken Loach’s latest film is a return to what he is known for – hard hitting, angry dramas.

Vincent Gallo stars as a man on the run… Captured in Afghanistan by US forces, Mohammed is subject to interrogation and rendition. In the course of his journey through an unnamed European country, he escapes across a snowcovered landscape where he attempts to live off the land, eventually having his wounds tended by a deaf and mute woman. Virtually without dialogue, its simple and in some ways traditional narrative recalls The Fugitive – but transformed through imaginative cinematography, clever use of natural imagery and perfect timing. A powerful reminder that in any conflict, one side does not hold a prerogative on human feeling and experience. 3

A group of long-term friends get together for a holiday and end up confronting their personal truths and traumas. While Ludo, the biggest bon vivant in the crowd, faces a crisis of his own, the friends head off for their annual holiday at the seaside house of Max, a successful but hyper-stressed restaurateur. Inevitable, the friends soon come to terms with their own secrets, anxieties and desires, with Max in particular heading for meltdown after being rattled by an intimate confession from his closest friend.

An absorbing and beautifully composed western, set on the Oregon trail in the 1840s.

Northern Iraq, 2003. Two weeks after the fall of Saddam Hussein. Ahmed, a 12-year-old boy begrudgingly follows in the shadows of his grandmother.

Charles Ferguson takes a bi-partisan, apolitical look into what actually caused the economic crash in 2008. This is a supremely rational look at the crisis and explores a broad range of highly informed economists, academics, psychologists, journalists and politicians to get to the bottom of who and what caused the crisis. Directed with a clear head and a clenched fist, this is a measured, sensible exploration of the issues giving a comprehensive and understandable picture of the crash. Rejecting Michael Moore style stunts for statistics and a sober and mature examination, this is a truly must-see documentary.

A wagon train of three families has hired mountain man Stephen Meek to guide them over the Cascade Mountains. Claiming to know a shortcut, he leads the group on an unmarked path over the high plain desert, only to become lost in the arid rock and sage. As food and water run low, tensions emerge, and the group’s faith in Meek and in their own ability to survive is sorely tested.

On hearing news that prisoners of war have been found alive in the South, she is determined to discover the fate of her missing son, Ahmed’s father, who never returned from the Gulf War. From the mountains of Kurdistan to the sands of Babylon, they hitch rides from strangers and cross paths with fellow pilgrims on all too similar journeys. She finds Reuben Cogburn (Bridges) a true reprobate and the toughest U.S. marshal around. His less than noble character makes her insist on following him and they are joined by Texas ranger LaBoeuf (Damon) who is hunting the killer for his own reasons.

Logue and George strike up an unlikely friendship, and as a result George is able to find his voice and lead the country through war. A stellar cast including Timothy Spall and Derek Jacobi unite to tell this surprisingly unknown story about a man’s struggle to ascend the throne and leave his people.

The latest film from Takashi Miike (Audition) sees thirteen Samurai teaming up to take out the sadistic Lord Naritsugu. They set a trap for him in a nearby town and prepare to kill him and his seventy guards. This masterful piece of story-telling is Miike’s most accomplished feature to date with a strong cast and a phenomenal final act.

It charts the headlong fall of Pinkie (Sam Riley, Control), a razor-wielding disadvantaged teenager hell bent on clawing his way up through the ranks of organised crime. At the heart of the story is Pinkie’s relationship with Rose (Riseborough), an apparently innocent young waitress who stumbles on evidence linking Pinkie and his gang to a revenge killing.
