Off Screen Wed 9 Jan – Wed 13 Mar £80
Awards season is upon us once more. Bill Murray’s FDR and Laura Linney’s Margaret will draw attention in one of the most charming films of the year in Hyde Park on Hudson, but the film also boasts an immensely strong supporting cast of Brits. Daniel Day-Lewis takes on another presidential role in Steven Spielberg’s biopic, Lincoln. If there is a braver performance than that of Helen Hunt in The Sessions, I would be amazed. The film will shock as many as it impresses but John Hawkes and William H Macy must also surely figure in the nominations.
There are some extraordinary screen classics back on the big screen. It Always Rains on Sundays is an arresting slice of post-war life from the Ealing Studios. Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, Babette’s Feast (for Valentine’s day – the way to a man’s heart...) and a couple of Polanski classics: Chinatown and Repulsion will brighten the dark nights of the bleak midwinter.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
In among the juggernauts are smaller gems which should not be overlooked. In Bruges writer-director, Martin McDonagh returns with an equally smart and shocking comedy thriller, Seven Psychopaths. You Will Be My Son is a surprise package, like a contemporary Jean de Florette, set in the wineries of Bordeaux. Starbuck is the best Canadian picture in the last five years (with, perhaps, the exception of Midnight’s Children) following the ‘fallout’ of a student sperm donor. No recounts how an advertising campaign destroyed the regime of General Pinochet in Chile.
Each session lasts 1.5 hours and start at 2pm every Wednesday from Wed 9 Jan to Wed 13 Mar, subscription includes admission to the 4pm screening on the day and all for a modest £80. Hitchcock
The special effects stand-off will be between The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and Life of Pi, both pushing the boundaries of filming unfilmable books. The two will surely be in the running for best film probably along with the extraordinary eco fantasy Beasts of the Southern Wild – quite literally like nothing you have seen before.
Following the success of the pilot course last autumn, Sue Porter returns to lead participants through a wealth of contemporary movies, providing context and insight and giving you the chance to talk about what you have been seeing. Films under discussion in this season include Untouchable, The Sessions and Hitchcock.
Rapid Eye Movement (REM) Tue 15 Jan 6.30pm £5 The regular showcase of short films from the region returns with a new harvest of delights including Marc Presdee’s Titanic Love. If you would like to submit your film for consideration in the programme, it should be less than 15mins in duration on DVD, DigiBeta or 35mm. Please send it to: John Gore, Film Programmer, Warwick Arts Centre, University of Warwick, Coventry CV4 7AL by Fri 11 Jan along with your contact details. From 5pm, the Producer’s Forum will be hosting a networking session in the National Grid Room in Warwick Arts Centre. Beasts of the Southern Wild

Following the phenomenal global success of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Peter Jackson returns to Middle Earth to explore the very beginnings of the tale and our first introduction to Hobbiton and its inhabitants. Young, carefree hobbit Bilbo Baggins (Freeman) lives a quiet, comfortable life until the unexpected arrival of wizard Gandalf (McKellen) and a company of 13 rowdy dwarves, intent on taking him off on an adventure.
“Charming, spectacular, technically audacious… in short, everything you expect from a Peter Jackson movie.” Total Film
Featuring a stunning central performance by Quvenzhané Wallis, this debut picture from director Benh Zeitlin has won international acclaim from both critics and public alike. The film follows 6 yearold Hushpuppy (Wallis) who lives with her irascible and drunken father, Wink (Henry) in the ‘Bathtub’, a remote southern delta community cut off by an expansive levee. With a fierce storm raging and Wink falling ill, Hushpuppy has to fight to survive the ever rising waters and the return of the mythical ‘aurochs’.

Pi sets out from India with his family on a freighter full of their zoo animals bound for America, but a treacherous storm hits and leaves Pi stranded on a lifeboat in the middle of the ocean with a vicious tiger called Richard Parker for company. A remarkable story of survival and belief. 04
Gene Kelly plays successful silent actor Don Lockwood who falls for chorus girl Kathy (Reynolds) just as the talkies arrive in Hollywood. Confronted by both his on-screen girlfriend and primitive sound recording, Don must make the smooth transition from silence into sound.
