Competence
Competence is being able to look at stressful situations and say, "I've got this." Kids who exhibit competence stay calm under pressure and, when issues arise, can tackle them. When something does go wrong, they know they can do better next time. Let them struggle and solve problems and handle challenges on their own. Try to only intervene when they really need it.
• Teach them how to ask for help and that it’s empowering to ask for help.
• Provide them with feedback that helps them understand where they succeeded and where they can improve.
• Teach them perfect doesn’t exist. Help them set reasonable goals and encourage them to add "yet" when they feel they"can't do something."
Confidence
Confident young people have the skills to handle the challenges life throws at them without much hesitation. Instilling confidence is the cornerstone of raising resilient kids.
• Let kids have boundaries and teach them how to say "no" when they need to and when something doesn’t feel right.
• Teach them about self love and accepting themselves while still working to improve.
Connection
Connection allows children to feel like they belong
RESILIENT KIDS CAN BOUNCE BACK FROM CHALLENGES, TRY AGAIN, AND LEARN ALONG THE WAY. WITH THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF CONFIDENCE AND GRIT, CHILDREN HEAD INTO THEIR TEENAGE YEARS AND ADULTHOOD WITH THE ABILITY TO FACE AND GROW FROM LIFE’S CHALLENGES. BUT KIDS AREN’T JUST BORN WITH RESILIENCE. IT’S SOMETHING THEY MUST LEARN AND PRACTICE. THERE ARE 7 C’S OF RESILIENCE: COMPETENCE, CONFIDENCE, CONNECTION, CHARACTER, CONTRIBUTION, COPING, AND CONTROL. BY PRACTISING STRATEGIES THAT REINFORCE THE 7 C’S WE CAN BEGIN TO BUILD RESILIENCE IN CHILDREN TO HELP THEM THROUGHOUT THEIR LIVES.
attitude and behavior. Knowing they make the world better—even on bad days—encourages kids to bounce back.
• Teach your kids about acts of kindness and brainstorm ones you can do together.
somewhere and know they have someone they can turn to when they need it. When young peope feel connected, they are less likely to hurt themselves or others and instead show greater empathy. Help your child explore different hobbies and find out what piques their interest. From there, they can start forming connections with others who share their passion.
• It can be difficult to make friends and nearly impossible to have conflict-free relationships. Discuss what good friendships involve with your kids.
Having character is knowing right from wrong and sticking with your values. Kids with strong character have higher self-esteem, show empathy, and feel they can make good choices.
• Teach them not to compare themselves to others. Comparing oneself to others can make kids want to bring others down and change their opinions of themselves. Likewise, being unkind to others or feeling less-than (or more-than) can affect their understanding of right and wrong.
• Watch movies with characters that display positive and negative character traits and discuss how the characters show resilience and other positive qualities.
Contribution
Contribution is what we give to the world with our
• Invite kids to voice their thoughts during family meetings. This shows you value their thoughts and giving them ownership over their own decisions can help kids become resilient and responsible.
How often do we tell kids "deal with it" or even "get over it," not realizing they may not know how to cope with their situation? Adequate coping skills must be taught.
• Read stories together and have children identify the characters' emotions and what they think the characters should do.
• Acknowledge their feelings and allow them to let feelings out when appropriate rather than letting them build.
• Teach them about mindfulness and to come up with strategies to recenter themselves in difficult situations.
Control is about knowing what you're in charge of and what you're not. There are things in this life that are simply out of our hands, all we can control is how we react to them.
• Praise kids for things they can control, like their effort, rather than things they can't control, like their innate gifts. Knowing their efforts matter more than anything can build resilience in children because it gives them permission to "fail" and try again.

Everybride dreams of radiating beauty on her wedding day. In Bali, the bride's journey to wedded bliss transcends the physical. Ngekeb, a prewedding ritual performed the day before the ceremony, is a unique tradition that prepares not just the bride's appearance, but also her mind and spirit for married life. Ngekeb isn't just a Balinese version of a spa treatment. It carries a deeper meaning, similar to the Javanese Siraman ceremony.
The ritual commences with a family prayer to Sang Hyang Widhi, the Balinese supreme god, seeking blessings for a smooth ceremony. The bride then undergoes a traditional body scrub, a fragrant concoction of peacock leaves, kenanga flowers, turmeric, and finely ground rice. This not only buffs her skin but also imbues it with a natural glow for the wedding day. Following the scrub, the bride's hair is washed with water infused with straw or rice stalks, a symbolic gesture for dark and lustrous locks for both the bride and groom. But Ngekeb goes beyond the physical. After the cleansing, the bride is bathed in fragrant flower water, a practice believed to purify her spirit.
SUNSETS HOLD A CERTAIN MAGIC, A MELANCHOLIC BEAUTY THAT WASHES OVER US AS THE DAY SURRENDERS TO DUSK. IN BALI'S WESTERN COAST, NESTLED IN THE KEDIRI DISTRICT OF TABANAN REGENCY, LIES A BEACH THAT CAPTURES THIS ESSENCE PERFECTLY - CINTA BEACH.
While not entirely unknown, Cinta Beach offers a serene escape compared to the bustling shores of nearby Tanah Lot.Here, you'll find fewer crowds, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the twilight magic. Imagine this: a gentle slope, not too steep, leading you down from a hill towards the shore.
This quaint spot, spanning less than a hectare, was transformed into a charming tourist destination by the local community during the pandemic. Currently, visitors to Cinta Beach are primarily local residents. Travel restrictions are still in place, requiring vaccinations and proof of negative COVID-19 tests.
- Reaching the beach requires a short walk through nearby
rice fields, adding a touch of adventure to your journey. The hidden location might seem like a challenge, but the reward is truly magnificent.
As the sun dips below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of red and orange, a sense of tranquility washes over you. Here's a tip: arrive early to secure a spot and enhance your sunset experience with some snacks and refreshing drinks. The best time to witness Cinta Beach's mesmerizing sunsets is between June and September, when the western skies of Bali come alive with fiery colors. Whether you choose to soak it in from the beach itself or find a vantage point on the nearby hills, Cinta Beach promises an unforgettable experience.

Here, the focus shifts inwards. The bride is then secluded in a room until the groom arrives the next day. This seclusion serves a significant purpose. It’s a time for fervent prayers, seeking blessings for a smooth and happy married life, filled with children and divine grace. More importantly, it's a period of selfreflection. The bride-to-be contemplates the transition from single life to embracing the responsibilities of wife and mother. The ritual culminates with the bride being draped in a thin yellow cloth on the wedding day. This signifies her willingness to symbolically "bury" her past life as a single woman and embrace a new chapter with her spouse. Ngekeb is a testament to the holistic approach to marriage in Balinese culture. It's a beautiful blend of physical beautification, spiritual cleansing, and mental preparation, ensuring the bride embarks on her marital journey with a radiant glow, a pure heart, and a focused mind, ready to build a happy and harmonious life with her partner.

A Great Barber Knows Exactly How To Get The Hair Style You Want, Can Advise On Styles That Will Suit You Or Your Type Of Hair, Even What Would Suit Your Lifestyle, For Example, If You’re Sporty And Always On The Go, And Need Something Low Maintenance And Easy To Style. They’ll Also Suggest Which Hair Styling Products To Use To Keep Your Hair In Tip-Top Condition And Get The Finish You Want.
You may know exactly what you want or perhaps fancy a complete change of hairstyle, Whatever your hairstyle of choice, here’s some tips from Canggu’s top barber!
1. Why not take a picture with you into the barber shop of the look you want? Bear in mind though that your hair may not look exactly like the picture you have brought in with you because of varying hair textures, growth patterns, etc. But your barber will advise you – if they think it’s not the right style for you, they’ll tell you why and will suggest something more suited to your hair and face shape.
2. If you want to have your haircut just as did the last time, then let your barber know how many weeks it has been since it was last cut. This will give them a clear idea of how much to cut off. If you want it to be different let them know how, for example, the front was a bit long last time, too close around the ears, etc. Let them know what you don’t like about your hair and what you do like. Make them aware of any problems you know about, for example, you have a double crown or scars that need to be hidden. Let them know how much time you generally spend on styling and which products you are using. And ask if you are not sure if you’re styling your hair right.
3. If you are happy with the consultation and the result, ask for styling advice too. Get the name of your barber and ask how often they would recommend you should get your haircut to maintain the style. Leaving it too long between haircuts makes it harder for your regular barber to tell how they cut it the previous time as different parts of your hair grow at different rates. Also seeing a regular barber will help you to find the right styles for your hair type as after time they will learn about your hair, and what it will do and won’t. They will also learn your style history and will know what styles you’ve already tried which will enable them to suggest new styles and not the ones you have already tried.

Balioffers more than just stunning beaches and serene temples. It also boasts a unique and exciting culinary scene, and a must-try for spice enthusiasts is the "spicy rice." Spicy rice is a Balinese dish similar to mixed rice, but with a fiery twist. Vegetables take center stage, accompanied by a side dish of your choice and a "kick" of flavour from a special chili sauce.
Two popular spots for this fiery dish are:
• Warung Nasi Pedas Ibu Andika: Considered the first spicy rice stall in Bali, Bu Andika's offers a variety of side dishes, including shredded chicken, crispy fish, and vegetable options. Their signature dry fried chicken skin with super spicy chili is a must-try, but be warned - it packs a punch! Prices start at IDR 20,000 and the stall is open 24/7 across three locations.
• Nasi Pedas Bu Hanif: For those who prefer a milder spice level, Bu Hanif's is a great option. Their chili paste is more
manageable and their focus is on seafood dishes like fried shrimp and fish. They also offer beef and chicken options. Prices here are slightly cheaper, starting at IDR 15,000, and the stall operates from 6pm to 10pm.
Tips for Trying Spicy Rice:
• Be bold! Spicy rice is an experience, so be prepared for the heat.
• Pace yourself: Start with small bites and gradually increase.
• Cool down: Have a glass of milk on hand to neutralize the spice.
• Listen to your body: Make sure your stomach is up for the challenge to avoid any discomfort.
Spicy rice is a delicious and fiery adventure for those who love a challenge. With its variety of side dishes and spice levels, there's a perfect option for everyone. So, if you're visiting Bali and have a love for spice, be sure to add spicy rice to your culinary itinerary!

Every 210 days according to the Balinese pawukon calendar, a special ceremony known as Tumpek Uduh takes place. This auspicious day is dedicated to honoring plants, acknowledging their vital role in life, and fostering harmony with nature. It serves as a significant reminder of the Balinese philosophy of wellbeing, Tri Hita Karana, which emphasizes the importance of a balanced relationship between humans, nature, and the divine.
Tumpek Uduh is a day of offerings and gratitude to Dewa Sangkara, the manifestation of God as the God of Plants. This ceremony falls exactly 25 days before the highly anticipated Galungan festival. By blessing the plants during Tumpek Uduh, devotees hope to ensure they are flourishing, fertile, and ready to bear fruit by the time Galungan arrives. Tumpek Uduh is also known by several other names, including Tumpek Wariga, Tumpek Bubuh, and Tumpek Pengatag. These variations reflect the different rituals performed during this day.

• Pengarah: An announcement is made to the plants, informing them of the upcoming blessings.
• Pengatag: The plants are gently tapped, hit, or even partially peeled (for trees). This symbolic gesture serves as a reminder of their importance.

• Sasap: Following the pengatag, decorative ornaments known as sasap are placed on the plants.
• Bubuh: Bubur, a type of porridge, is offered as a nourishing meal to the plants, further emphasizing their sacred status on this day.
Tumpek Uduh is not just a day of rituals; it's a day of reflection. It's a time to appreciate the life-giving power of plants and recognize our dependence on them. Through these rituals, devotees express their gratitude and ask for continued growth and abundance.

As Indonesia Approaches The 79th Anniversary Of Its Independence On August 17, It Is A Time For Reflection And Celebration. This Day Marks The End Of 350 Years Of Dutch Colonial Rule, A Significant Milestone In The Nation's History. While The Nature Of Colonialism Has Changed, With Some Arguing That Modern Land-Grabbing And Gentrification Are New Forms Of It, Independence Day Remains A Pivotal Moment For The Country. Unlike Christmas, Which Is Often Associated With Family Gatherings And Gift- Giving, Independence Day In Indonesia Is A Communal Celebration Marked By Ceremonies, Flag-Raising, And, Most Notably, Traditional Games.

Kerupuk, or crackers, are a beloved side dish in Indonesia, and their significance dates back to the struggle for independence when food was scarce. The cracker eating contest involves participants trying to eat a swinging cracker with their hands tied behind their backs, symbolizing the resourcefulness required during tough times.
The balap karung, or sack race, reminds participants of the rough gunny sacks used for clothing and storage during the war. Made from natural fibers like jute, these sacks were a staple of everyday life. In the race, participants hop inside these sacks towards the finish line, embodying the perseverance and endurance of their ancestors.
The tarik tambang, or tug of war, has ancient origins but has been a staple of Indonesia’s Independence Day celebrations since 1950. This game symbolizes the strength found in unity and teamwork, echoing the collective effort required for the nation's independence.
For many Indonesians, the games played during Independence Day celebrations are a highlight. These activities, often held at schools or local soccer fields, bring communities together in a spirit of fun and competition. Children dress up in costumes—soldiers, farmers, and Kartini-inspired outfits for girls—and participate in traditional games such as balap karung (sack race), lomba makan kerupuk (cracker eating contest), tarik tambang (tug of war), lomba balap kelereng/telur (egg/marble race), and the challenging panjat pinang (pole climbing). While these games are entertaining, they also carry deeper meanings, teaching participants resilience, strategy, bravery, and camaraderie. Here are some examples:

Perhaps the most controversial of the games, panjat pinang, involves climbing a greased pole to reach prizes at the top. Historically, the Dutch colonizers organized this game to mock the locals on Queen Wilhelmina’s birthday, with essential items like bread, rice, sugar, and clothes as prizes. Today, the game has been reinterpreted to promote resilience and teamwork, transforming a symbol of oppression into one of solidarity and perseverance.
While the games of Independence Day are rooted in historical struggles, they have evolved to represent the spirit of modern Indonesia. They teach valuable lessons in resilience and unity, ensuring that the sacrifices of the past are remembered and honored. As we celebrate the 79th anniversary of Indonesia’s independence, let us embrace these traditions, recognizing the progress made and the enduring strength of the Indonesian people.
