HELLO!

AS THE MAYOR OF OAKLAND, I am honored to welcome you to The Town—the place I am proud to call home. Whether you’re here for business or leisure, we are delighted to have you.

Oakland is a city where history, innovation, and hospitality come together. From strolling around the scenic Lake Merritt to exploring the towering redwoods in the Oakland Hills to experiencing downtown, I know you’ll find something that inspires you. Local businesses, restaurants, and attractions are eager to share the best of what The Town has to offer—and what the city offers is truly exceptional.

Oakland was recently named the #1 Best Food City in America by Condé Nast Traveler’s annual Readers’ Choice Awards, thanks to incredible chefs and the neighborhood spots locals can’t stop talking about. It’s also one of the most diverse cities in the country, where more than 125 languages and dialects are spoken daily, making Oakland a place that genuinely reflects the world we live in.

ROOTED IN OAKLAND

AND GRASSROOTS SUPPORT. BY

HOMEGROWN ISN’T JUST A SLOGAN in Oakland—it’s a way of life. From the food trucks of East Oakland and Temescal’s destination-worthy foodie row to Burning Man sculptures forged in Fruitvale and Uptown’s pulsing arts and entertainment scene, this is a city that takes pride in a scrappy, DIY ethos in which success is earned, not given.

But that doesn’t mean it happens all on its own. Even as Oakland punches above its weight in the cultural arena, The Town’s creatives have banded together in typical homegrown fashion.

Take the Oakland Restaurant Collective. When the city’s acclaimed local food scene struggled to emerge from the pandemic, dozens of Oakland restaurants, cafes, and bars—founding members include the owners of ACRE Kitchen & Bar, Sobre Mesa, Mr. Espresso, Oakland Athletic Club, Parche, Jaji, Kitava, Town Fare, and public relations firm af&co.—formed a unique selffunded and self-organized coalition.

In 2025, the volunteer collective mobilized a month of summer culinary events and a fall cocktail week to kick off its efforts to promote and advocate for what Condé Nast Traveler recently dubbed the Best Food City in the U.S.

“Oakland is wildly diverse and collaborative—immigrant kitchens, pop-ups, legacy spots, and top-tier beverage programs— where community and experimentation drive the scene,” says Luigi Di Ruocco,

vice president and co-owner of Mr. Espresso roastery and cafe. “That resilient, community-first culture is why owners banded together to tell a truer story about our city and invite people back to the table.”

Oakland’s arts and culture scene tells a similar story. Alongside regional pillars such as the Oakland Zoo, Chabot Space & Science Center, Oakland Museum of California, and Oakland Symphony, the city’s famed grassroots energy has helped spark a dynamic music scene, important cultural preservation efforts like East Oakland’s Black Cultural Zone, a kaleidoscope of public murals and artwork, and a robust network of small galleries and performing arts groups.

As opposed to other nearby cities,

Oakland’s mentality “is a bit more fierce,” says Thomas Cavanagh, executive director of acclaimed aerial dance group BANDALOOP. “We’ve built up more of a bootstrap mentality.”

Cavanagh is among the founding members of the Art & Culture Coalition, a volunteer collection of more than one hundred representatives of Oakland’s creative community whose goal is to unify, support, and promote their work within the city and beyond. Promotion is particularly important, says Cavanagh, “because Oakland already has this genuinely rich environment and history of arts and culture.

“If we coalesce under one banner we can be a real force—even across the country and internationally. The potential is massive.”

Oakland is wildly diverse and collaborative— immigrant kitchens, pop-ups, legacy spots, and top-tier beverage programs—where community and experimentation drive the scene.

TWO OF THE LARGEST sporting events in the world isn’t something you pull off alone. It’ll be a team effort to successfully accommodate the estimated half-million fans expected to descend on the Bay Area in 2026 for Super Bowl LX and the FIFA World Cup, both of which are being played at Levi’s Stadium in nearby Santa Clara. That’s why Oakland has partnered with the Bay Area Host Committee, the nonprofit organization tasked with planning these mega events at a regional level.

“This partnership is a model for regional collaboration,” says Zaileen Janmohamed, president and CEO of the Bay Area Host Committee. “By working together, we create a unified and compelling narrative for the Bay Area while amplifying Oakland’s distinct identity.”

That identity, says Janmohamed, is characterized by “authentic hospitality, a worldclass culinary scene, and deep-rooted community pride.” Plus, the influx of visitors offers a unique opportunity for the city to shine on a global stage.

“For Oakland, these events represent a chance to showcase its vibrant culture, passionate sports fandom, and dynamic local businesses to the world. Oakland is an essential part of the Bay Area’s story, and these events should also provide a spotlight on everything that makes the city unique, resilient, and welcoming.”

These events should also provide a significant economic boost for the city’s shops, workforce, and hospitality sector that could extend well after the games’ final whistle.

“We believe these events will introduce new audiences to Oakland, drive repeat visitation, and reinforce the city’s reputation as a destination for sports, culture, and innovation,” she says.

“Oakland is a city of stories—each neighborhood, each business, each resident contributes to its unique character. We want every guest to feel the energy, diversity, and authenticity that define Oakland, and to return home eager to share their experiences and come back again.” bayareahostcommittee.com

THE BLACK PANTHER PARTY’S ENDURING LEGACY 60 Years of Power:

Oakland has always been a place where change takes root—and few movements embody that spirit more than the Black Panther Party. Founded here in 1966, the Panthers rose in response to injustice but also to care for the community. As 2026 marks the Party’s 60th anniversary, Oakland is honored to share the reflections of Fredrika Newton, widow of Party cofounder Dr. Huey P. Newton. Her words remind us that Oakland’s legacy is one of resilience, inclusivity, and hope.

As we mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Black Panther Party, for me it is both deeply personal and profoundly historic. In 1966, my late husband, Dr. Huey P. Newton, cofounded the Party with Bobby Seale in Oakland. Responding to the reality of police brutality, poverty, and systemic neglect, the Party was born from a love of our people and a belief that we deserved dignity, safety, and the basic rights long denied to us.

I carry Huey’s memory with me every

FREDRIKA NEWTON

day, and as we commemorate this anniversary through programming and exhibitions at the Black Panther Party Museum in Downtown Oakland, I think about how the seeds he planted grew into a movement that touched the world. The solutions that he and Bobby crafted in the Ten-Point Program were rooted in Black people’s struggle for liberation in Oakland, and were felt by oppressed communities globally. The Party is often remembered as young men standing with leather jackets, raised fists, and shotguns—

Fredrika Newton learned to march before she could walk. The daughter of activists and a former member of the Black Panther Party, she has devoted her life to justice and community empowerment. As cofounder of the Dr. Huey P. Newton Foundation and Black Panther Party Museum, she leads efforts to preserve and share the true history and legacy of the Party. She successfully renamed a portion of West Oakland’s 9th Street to Dr. Huey P. Newton Way and installed a bust of Dr. Huey P. Newton as Oakland’s first permanent public art to honor the Party. The Black Panther Party Museum showcases historic exhibitions, delivers community programming and events, and conducts tours in Oakland. ownership of which is a right held under the Second Amendment. We believed in defending ourselves from police brutality and often knew the law better than those arresting us. Though we were painted as something to be feared, we spent most of our days carrying out more than 65 Survival Programs including Free Breakfast for Schoolchildren, Free Medical Clinics, Free Ambulance Services, Sickle Cell Anemia Testing, and the Oakland Community School. Beyond being revolutionary acts of love, these programs were strategic ways to organize and mobilize the community. By meeting people’s immediate needs in the face of government neglect, the Panthers built trust, fostered political consciousness, and showed communities their collective strength, demonstrating that self-determination was both practical and revolutionary. The result was a community that felt inspired and cared for beyond any measure they had ever known.

Many of the same issues the Panthers confronted, from racism and poverty to mass incarceration and state violence, still haunt us today. But the lesson is not despair but determination. The Party taught us that ordinary people, when organized and committed, can transform society.
—FREDRIKA NEWTON, COFOUNDER OF DR. HUEY P. NEWTON FOUNDATION AND BLACK PANTHER PARTY MUSEUM

As we reflect on 60 years, I believe the most important takeaway is that the struggle is not a relic of the past. Many of the same issues the Panthers confronted, from racism and poverty to mass incarceration and state violence, still haunt us today. But the lesson is not despair but determination. The Party taught us that ordinary people, when organized and committed, can transform society.

This anniversary is a moment of pride, remembrance, and recommitment. It’s about honoring Huey’s vision and carrying it forward in ways that meet today’s challenges. The Panthers gave us a blueprint rooted in love, justice, and selfdetermination. If we can hold on to that spirit, then the next generation can build a world where every child has food, every family has dignity, and every community has power.

From the 1940s to the 1960s, Seventh Street was the epicenter of Black arts and culture—it’s no wonder why the neighborhood earned the nickname Harlem of the West. West Oakland was also home to the Black Panther Party (see page 16 for more). The newest addition to the neighborhood, Prescott Market is a community hub full of eats and drinks. And for all you baseball fans, head to Raimondi Park to see the 2025 Pioneer League champion Oakland Ballers.

EAST OAKLAND

Expansive and diverse, East Oakland technically stretches from Lake Merritt to the edge of San Leandro. It’s home to cultural institutions (Black Cultural Zone), civic organizations (East Oakland Collective), familyrun eateries, and beloved parks. Liberation Park is often used as a community gathering space, hosting everything from the Akoma Market to roller skating sessions at Umoja Outdoor Roller Skating Rink.

FRUITVALE

Having once been covered in fruit trees, Fruitvale now bursts with color, flavor, and Latin cultural pride. Check out Fruitvale Public Market for treats like Mexican ice cream, conchas, and other panadería delights. For a dose of local history, check out the six-acre Peralta Hacienda Historical Park and Peralta House Museum, where you can tour a multimedia exhibition on the history of California and Oakland. And each fall, the Día de los Muertos Festival transforms the neighborhood with ofrendas, Aztec dances, and music.

This walkable neighborhood oozes cozy charm, with leafy streets, Craftsman bungalows, and an easygoing pace. Browse Rockridge Market Hall’s European-style food hall—think butcher, baker, produce, wine, flowers, and more all under one roof—then linger at a nearby cafe or browse bookshops and homewares and clothing boutiques. Neighborhood parks thread through the area, including Frog Park and the Rockridge-Temescal Greenbelt, a kid-friendly creek-side escape nestled among a small stand of redwoods. BART access makes it easy to hop around The Town, yet everything feels delightfully local.

KONO

KONO—Koreatown Northgate—entices with galleries, studios, and statement murals, while Oakland First Fridays turns the district into an openair art party, with pop-ups, performers, and community vendors. Sundays bring the Temescal Farmers Market, where neighbors stock up on produce and picnic makings. Come hungry!

On Sundays, the farmers market draws neighbors for produce, flowers, and local goods. Nearby, Reinhardt Redwood Regional and Joaquin Miller parks offer redwood-shaded trails and sweeping bay views. The Woodminster Cascade—an elegant fountain leading to the outdoor amphitheater in Joaquin Miller Park—adds a touch of grandeur.

Piedmont Avenue

Not to be confused with the Berkeley neighborhood with the same name, Piedmont Avenue is a residential district in the northeast part of Oakland with its main thoroughfare named— you guessed it—Piedmont Avenue. Here, you’ll find Michelinstar Commis, softball-size scoops from Fentons Creamery, good read from Tally Ho! Books, and a mix of historic architecture. The Landmark Piedmont Theatre screens independent films, while Mountain View Cemetery—designed by Frederick Law Olmsted of New York’s Central Park fame— offers peaceful walking paths and bay vistas. Cafes encourage lingering, while vintage shops and specialty boutiques offer some retail therapy.

LAUREL DISTRICT

A quiet yet happening area, Laurel District blends retro storefronts with colorful murals and family-owned businesses. Globally inspired food abounds, from Caribbean to Michelinrecognized Thai to locally loved beer. And each August, the Laurel StreetFair World Music Festival fills seven blocks with music, dancing, art, and flavors from around the world.

FOR THE OUTDOOR LOVER

IF YOU’RE SEEKING SHADE, SKYLINE VIEWS, OR A PLACE TO PAUSE, OAKLAND’S WILD SIDE IS JUST MINUTES FROM THE HEART OF THE CITY.

While the Bay buzzes, Oakland’s hills hum at their own frequency. In less than 20 minutes, you can trade city blocks for fern glades, redwood groves, and ridgeline views. Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park stuns with misty trails and towering trees—French Trail and Tres Sendas Loop is a local favorite for a shaded hike and a good leg burn. Joaquin Miller Park offers a dose of drama with winding switchbacks, mountain views, and a fenced dog park tucked into the redwoods. A favorite for wildflower chasers, the park is home to more than 200 plant species, including the rare Oakland star-tulip. Visit during spring for your chance to see it.

Want a low-key ramble with high rewards? Leona Canyon is shaded, tranquil, and full of birdsong—and in spring, it erupts in color. Huckleberry Botanic Regional Preserve brings the rare and resilient, with native flora, fauna, and rock strata you won’t find anywhere else in the East Bay. And for the geo-curious? Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve is home to an ancient volcano—yes, a real one—complete with labyrinth trails and grazing cows.

FUN BY & ON THE WATER

If you’re more in the mood for lakeside leisure or waterfront paths, Lake Merritt, Temescal Regional Recreation Area, and MLK Jr. Regional Shoreline each offer their own kind of urban escape—birdwatch, picnic, or paddle your way through the day. IN OAKLAND, THE GAME IS ONLY PART OF THE STORY. ENERGY, ACTIVISM, AND A WHOLE LOT OF HOMETOWN PRIDE COME STANDARD.

HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE

Oakland’s love of sport is palpable—from neighborhood pickup games to pro-level showdowns. And even though the city is between major league teams, a new generation of athletes, clubs, and fans is redefining what hometown pride looks like.

OAKLAND ROOTS SPORTS CLUB

The Oakland Ballers are shaking up the baseball world. This independent league team plays home games at West Oakland’s historic Raimondi Park, delivering an exciting, familyfriendly atmosphere with community flair. Think themed nights like Star Wars and Día de los Ballers, a spirited crowd, and on-the-field talent that’s already turned heads: The Ballers sent three players to major league organizations in their debut season.

Soccer’s on the rise, too. Since 2019, the Oakland Roots Sports Club has cultivated a dedicated following. Fueled by purpose and passion, the Roots play with intention, supporting community programs and nonprofits and proudly reflecting Oakland’s diversity on the pitch. In 2025, the team returned to The Town, playing home matches at the Oakland Coliseum while a new, dedicated stadium is being built nearby.

Sharing the spotlight is Oakland Soul Sports Club, the women’s pre-professional club founded in 2022. In its first season, the Soul went undefeated at home. Expect a high-energy fan base, fierce competition, and representation that mirrors

CREATIVITY LIVES IN EVERY CORNER OF OAKLAND. THIS IS A CITY WHERE CULTURE ISN’T JUST SEEN—IT’S FELT.

ART WATCH

Art is everywhere in Oakland— murals stretch across buildings and alleyways become open-air galleries (check out Murals of Oakland on Instagram or Bay Area Mural Program on YouTube for self-guided tours), and monthly First Friday art walks by Oakland Art Murmur bring the community out in force. And don’t forget to gallery hop, popping into places like Creative Growth Art, a nonprofit studio and gallery that supports artists with disabilities.

Oakland has always been a city that moves to its own rhythm. A cradle of West Coast blues, a launchpad for hip-hop pioneers, and a magnet for global talent, The Town embraces music and culture in every form. Annual festivals and tours bring K-pop sensations, Indian superstars, and Mexican icons to local stages, reaffirming Oakland’s status as a multicultural capital of music. Here, creativity spans continents—and it all sounds like home.

BORN

TO PLAY

MUSIC ICON SHEILA E. REFLECTS ON HER OAKLAND ROOTS AND A BOUNDARY-BREAKING CAREER.

Few artists embody Oakland’s creative spirit like Sheila E. Born into the legendary Escovedo music family, she grew up surrounded by the rhythms of Latin jazz, funk, R&B, and soul that shaped her identity as both an artist and an activist. Over the decades, her electrifying performances and fearless collaborations with legends like Prince have made her a global icon. In this conversation, Sheila shares how Oakland influenced her journey, what inspires her today, and the lessons she hopes to pass on.

Oakland has such a rich music legacy, from West Coast blues to hip-hop and beyond. How do you see yourself as part of that story? The legacy of the Escovedo family is part of the Bay Area story, bringing Latin jazz, pop, R&B and soul. We have crossed barriers with our music and that in itself represents the Bay Area. Through music and the arts our legacy continues.

What is one of your most defining career moments?

It will always be the moment I realized this was my purpose and passion in life! I was 15 years old

performing with my father in San Francisco. I did not realize until that moment that it would change the rest of my life. Two weeks later after performing with his band Azteca, I became a professional musician and never looked back.

Your music spans funk, pop, Latin, jazz, and more. What keeps you inspired to explore so many genres?

To explore as many genres as possible has helped shape me to be the artist that I am. It’s inspiring to learn something new every single day, and if you continue to be a student of life, then it becomes enjoyable because knowledge is power.

As someone known for electrifying live shows, what do you love most about performing?

There’s a difference between recording and performing live. To be able to reach the people, the love that is given back to us for all that we do is a feeling words cannot always express. It is an emotional and spiritual journey that you can only experience when it is true and transparent.

What advice would you give to young Oakland musicians?

Young people: There will be many disappointing times, struggles, rejection; however, what you put in is what you get back. Make your journey a memorable experience, be kind to each other, read the fine print, and surround yourself with at least three people to help build the foundation of who you are as an artist because a chair cannot stand on two legs.

MUSIC MILESTONES oakland sound

Take a look back at the sounds that shaped The Town.

1940s–60s: Seventh Street becomes the heartbeat of West Coast blues, hosting legends like Billie Holiday and Big Mama Thornton. 1980s: Oakland pioneers hip-hop with breakout stars Too $hort and MC Hammer, while En Vogue and Digital Underground put their spin on R&B. 1990s–2000s: The hyphy movement, led by artists like Keak Da Sneak, Mobb music, and backpack rap energize Bay Area rap. 2010s–Today: Oakland continues to shape the music world with homegrown talent like Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day, G-Eazy, Goapele, and Kehlani making waves across genres, while the annual Hiero Day celebrates local hip-hop.

In Oakland, family fun is anything but ordinary. Here, beloved institutions offer the kind of magic that makes kids light up—and gives grown-ups an excuse to join in.

Start with a ride through the sky at the Oakland Zoo. Board the ADA-accessible gondola to the California Trail, where bison graze and grizzlies roam—within their own enclosures, of course. For the budding astronaut, NASA exhibits include real space suits, a splashdown module, and a towering replica of the lunar rover VIPER. Don’t miss the Friday and Saturday evening telescope viewings or the monthly First Friday parties where families explore Chabot after dark.

Spend an afternoon at OMCA (Oakland Museum of California), where interactive exhibits and open-air gardens turn art and history into a hands-on experience. In the Gallery of California Natural Sciences, kids can climb through a redwood root system, learn about native wildlife, and get up close with fascinating fossils. Or, stick around for Friday Nights at OMCA with Off the Grid, a weekly seasonal gathering featuring food trucks, live music, garden vibes, and afterhours access to the museum’s galleries (ticket purchase required).

At Children’s Fairyland, 21-and-up events like FairyProud Pride Night pair drag shows and live music with cocktails and food trucks. OMCA keeps things social with Friday night happy hours and music. But if mimosas are more your vibe, Town Fare’s (OMCA’s on-site cafe) DJ-hosted brunch is the move. MEET CLOTHING DESIGNER LESLEY EVERS.

Step into the Rockridge boutique of designer Lesley Evers and you’ll quickly see why her name has become synonymous with bold prints and joyful silhouettes. A trained architect turned clothier, Evers brings a sense of structure to playful patterns, balancing whimsy with wearability. Her pieces reflect Oakland itself—colorful, eclectic, and effortlessly original. Whether it’s a vibrant tunic or a statement dress, her designs embody the city’s confidence and adaptability. Here, Evers talks about what fuels her creativity and how The Town inspires her work.

How does Oakland influence your creative process?

Oakland shows up in my work in different ways. The color, the murals, and the mix of people and styles add a certain energy. It’s not my only influence, but it’s part of the bigger picture that shapes what I create.

FOR THE STYLESEEKER

STYLE IN OAKLAND IS ABOUT MORE THAN TRENDS—IT’S ABOUT ROOTS, VOICE, AND INDIVIDUALITY.

What inspires your personal style?

I’ve always loved clothes that feel joyful and easy. Prints, color, vintage finds, things with a story behind them. My background in architecture makes me think about structure and silhouette, but my personal style leans playful, comfortable, and just a bit unexpected.

What does “Oakland style” mean to you?

Oakland style is all about mixing things up and making it work. A bold print dress with sneakers, or vintage with something new. It’s effortless, confident, and original, with a don’t-overthink-it attitude.

Where do you go in The Town when you need a fresh dose of inspiration?

My husband and I enjoy a simple evening drive with no destination, just a tour around town. We’ll roll down College Avenue to see people out walking, pass by Lake Merritt as the sun dips, and wind up in the hills for a view of the Bay. The breezy air, the trees, and the light at that hour always recharge me.

READY TO WEAR

Designed and sewn right in Oakland, colorful prints meet easy, wearable silhouettes at Lesley Evers’ vibrant boutique.

CHEF ADIAM TSEGAYE WAS PURSUING A CULINARY DEGREE IN WASHINGTON, D.C. WHEN SHE FELL FOR AN OAKLANDER NAMED YONAS. Making the case for moving across the country, her future husband said Oakland would be the perfect place for her to open a restaurant.

“I knew I didn’t want to work for anyone else,” Tsegaye recalls. “He told me there’s a food scene and Napa is close.”

Tsegaye took a chance on love, and relocated to Oakland in 2005. About eight months later, she was running her first restaurant, a coffee shop that served sandwiches and salads.

“I just opened a holein-the-wall cafe and I fit in right away,” she says. “You don’t have to explain yourself or your culture or your food.”

She turned the lessons from her first spot into Mela Bistro, a modern Ethiopian restaurant that highlights traditional dishes and ingredients through a California lens.

“I like to elevate my cuisine,” she says. “If the French can do it, then why not me?”

For example, her kitfo tartare uses ahi tuna and olive oil instead of beef and butter, while her samosas start with spinach tortillas stuffed with spiced lentils. She employs the ancient African grain teff to craft gluten-free injera flatbread as well as a vegan chocolate cake that doesn’t taste it. The tej wine, made with fermented local honey, offers another way to taste the Bay.

“The people here are really warm,” she gratefully says of Oakland. “It’s a tight community.”

Plates to share

Heaped with vibrant stews, injera, wraps, and sides, Mela Bistro’s platters are made for gathering and sharing.

recognized & celebrated

OAKLAND SERVES WORLD-CLASS FLAVOR.

Oakland’s dining scene continues to shine under the national spotlight, with Michelin stars, James Beard nods, and other accolades rolling in for the city’s top chefs and restaurants.

Leading the pack is Sun Moon Studio, Oakland’s newest, Michelin-starred restaurant (see page 59 for more). The city’s only twostar Michelin restaurant, Commis, offers an elegant, artful experience blending New American technique with Asian heritage flavors—signature dishes like the slow-poached egg yolk remain standouts. Michelin recognition also shines on Chuan Yu, known for bold Sichuan specialties; Barcote Ethiopian Restaurant, celebrated for complex stews, tangy injera, and warm hospitality; and Jo’s Modern Thai, which layers California produce and flavor into vibrant Thai classics. And in Uptown, Parche transports diners to Colombia with tropical decor, Latin beats, and traditional plates with a twist. Awards extend beyond the Michelin Guide. Patisserie Tarts de Feybesse earned a 2025 James Beard semifinalist nod for

Outstanding Pastry Chef or Baker thanks to exquisite contemporary French pastries. From pain au chocolat to elaborate trompe l’oeil (dessert disguised as fruit), everything here is nothing short of a masterpiece. Burdell, a modern soul food restaurant, was a 2024 James Beard semifinalist and named Best Restaurant in America by Food & Wine, while MAMA Oakland serves comforting, seasonal Italian fare.

Just north of Lake Merritt, Bardo Lounge & Supper Club blends retro glamour with modern flair—expect elevated comfort food, craft cocktails, and a cozy lounge ambience perfect for lingering deep into the night. In Fruitvale, Wahpepah’s Kitchen, led by chef Crystal Wahpepah—the first Native American chef to appear on Chopped—honors Indigenous foodways with colorful, nourishing dishes like bison meatballs and three sisters salad.

These join a roster of lauded local favorites such as Bombera, chef Dominica RiceCisneros’ take on Mexican meals, plant-based pioneer Millennium, hyperlocal and green Michelin-star Pomet, creative taco imaginings of Tacos Oscar, and many more.

TAKE A BITE OUT OF OAKLAND’S VEGAN TRAIL.

Oakland’s plant-based scene is as bold and flavorful as The Town itself. Longtime favorite Souley Vegan serves up New Orleans–style comfort food like spicy okra gumbo, Ain’t Gator po’boys, and Creole mac. Vegan Chula reimagines Mexicaninspired classics (like hot honey poblano mac or crispy fried tofu nachos) with vegan flair, while Rico Rico Vegano wows with konjac shrimp tacos and soyrizo burritos. And that’s just the start—the Vegan Trail features more than 20 vegan-friendly stops.

Vegan Chula’s eats are so good you won’t believe they’re vegan.

sun moon studio

FOR SARAH

COOPER AND ALAN HSU, THE CHEF PARTNERS BEHIND SUN MOON STUDIO, culinary inspiration comes from many places: a video arcade in Taiwan, The Midwife and The Baker in Mountain View, and Blue Hill at Stone Barns in Tarrytown, New York, where the couple met.

They’ve turned those diverse references,

and their admiration for sustainable local ingredients, into eclecticyet-classical tasting menus at Sun Moon Studio.

Though their culinary creations change with the seasons, signatures include Monterey Bay spot prawns with Hodo soy milk tofu, pickled young ginger, Shaoxing reduction, and shellfish oil. An arcade in Taiwan that doled out sausages as prizes inspired Hsu to make a similar fresh pork sausage. With hints of ginger, garlic, and Taiwanese rice wine, the savory-sweet sausage is served wrapped in steamed brioche.

“It references growing up in the Bay Area and getting a hot dog,” says Hsu, who favors Costco’s $1.50 version. Beverages range from hand-curated

teas and international wines to team member Ubi Solorio’s nonalcoholic creations like a sweet-andsalty fermented blueberry soda and a zesty vegetable cocktail with tomato, carrot, and celery.

Tucked away in an industrial section of West Oakland, tiny Sun Moon Studio has been a destination restaurant since opening in August 2024. But the 12 seats became even more coveted after the chefs were awarded their first Michelin star less than a year later.

The pair say that in a city like Oakland that’s blessed with so much culinary talent, they’re humbled and thrilled to be finding acclaim—and a devoted audience.

“The food scene in Oakland is so exciting and

vibrant,” says Hsu.

Though they often work six to seven days a week, when they do get a day off, they love that Oakland offers excellent Ethiopian, Laotian, and Mexican cuisine.

“It’s so varied. I feel like whatever it is you’re in the mood for, someone is doing it and doing it well,” says Cooper. —M.C.H.

CHEF ANTHONY SALGUERO WAS JUST 15 WHEN HE LANDED HIS FIRST KITCHEN JOB AT THE MONTANA RESORT WHERE HIS MOTHER WORKED.

Bouncing around in his early years, he always found his way back to cooking—the kitchen was a safe space.

When the California Culinary Academy graduate landed in Oakland to open a French restaurant, he ended up staying.

“Oakland became home so quickly,” Salguero says. “It feels like a city and it doesn’t at the same time. One of the big reasons I love Oakland is because the food scene is so honest and soulful and warm—there are so many cultures here,” he says.

He burnished his skills

at the Plumed Horse in Saratoga, plus Saison and Commonwealth in San Francisco. But not long after his thirtyfirst birthday, Salguero started feeling restless. Visiting his father’s family in El Salvador, he and his cousins went eating along the mountainous Ruta de las Flores near Ataco. A traditional dish of fish in alguashte, a sauce of pumpkin seed, tomato, garlic, and aromatic spices, delivered an epiphany.

“I was blown away by the complexity of it,” he says. “It made me want to get closer to that side of me. I thought: Why don’t we have this in Oakland?” He started a pupusa pop-up that he built into the brickand-mortar restaurant

Meze Time

Popoca, where he cooks seasonal riffs on regional Salvadoran cuisine over live fire.

Signatures include pollo en chicha, chicken simmered in a fragrant fermented pineapple sauce, calamari ceviche, and spiced sweet potatogoat cheese tamales. The creative bar menu highlights mezcal, tequila, and Salvadoran rum in clarified milk punch infused with tropical fruits.

And while Popoca is Salvadoran, it’s also flavored by Salguero’s diverse cooking experiences.

“My food is very personal, so it’s not super traditional,” he says. “I’m a secondgeneration Salvadoran, so that’s what my food is.”

AFRICAN BITES TO FILIPINO

FEASTS,

OAKLAND’S FLAVORS SPAN THE GLOBE.

Oakland’s food scene is a passport in plate form—rooted in heritage, rich with tradition, and infused with flavors from across the globe.

Ethiopian and Eritrean spots shine in The Town. In Temescal, Alem’s Coffee serves breakfast favorites like shihan ful (veggie stew) and chechebsa (shredded, stir-fried, and spiced-up kicha bread) alongside strong

coffee. Shewhat Cafe offers tender lamb tibsy, vegetarian stews, and injera perfect for communal dining.

From the Caribbean, alaMar Dominican Kitchen chef Nelson German celebrates his heritage with dishes like sofrito-simmered chicken, braised oxtail, and tostones.

Filipino spot FOB Kitchen charms with vibrant plates such as daing na bangus

(marinated milkfish) in a vibe-y space. And seafood lovers head to Mujiri, where pristine sushi, nigiri, and omakase showcase Japanese precision, or Lake Chalet Seafood Bar & Grill (brunch on the pier is a must).

At Mägo, chef Mark Liberman fuses his Latin American roots with Bay Area ingredients in seasonal tasting menus that feel both homey

and high-end, while The Fat Lady pleases with hearty plates like pancetta-wrapped prawns and chicken marsala. For comforting South Asian fare, Taava Kitchen delivers bold Pakistani and Indian flavors—think fragrant biryani and spiced chai worth lingering over. Thai food devotees line up at Pintoh Thai (on Franklin Street) and Attraros Thai Eatery (in Swan’s Market) for craveable servings of pad seew and simmering curries. And pho—and vermicelli bowls and spring rolls—from womenowned Tay Ho Oakland is always a good idea.

Head to El Huarache Azteca for a taste of Mexico City, or Otaez Mexican Restaurant for classics fresh from la plancha. Uptown’s Z Cafe & Bar is perfect for preshow noshes while Low Bar is the spot for a nightcap and meal. Pro tip: Everything is delicious—eat it.

Not drinking? Oakland still pours it out. Ask bartenders for house shrubs, bitter spritzes, or tea-tonic riffs; most spots keep NA lists built with the same care as cocktails. Viridian’s Temperance Sour—made with Lyre’s American Malt, sugar, lemon, and egg white—is as decadent as its boozy cousin. SKIP THE SMOKE

Try edibles, vape pens, or products with THC/CBD ratios for a gentler effect. Always follow package dosing.

Begin with small doses and give them time to kick in—you can always take more, not less.
