Meet the Team
Say hello to the faces behind the fun.
What sets Oxnard A Beat Apart from other destinations?
ELIZABETH MAXIM MELGOZA (far left): “At the Channel Islands Harbor Farmer’s Market, Sunday mornings come alive with the calls of cheerful vendors, the smell of just-popped kettle corn, the acoustic melodies of street musicians and the laughter of friends.”
DANIEL CABRERA (second from left): “Heritage Square hums with soul—from calavera faces glowing during Día de los Muertos to the strum of guitars echoing off of Victorian facades on summer nights, it’s where Oxnard’s culture comes alive.”
BRITTNEY HENDRICKS (center): “Find a peaceful moment in the heart of Downtown Oxnard at John C. Zaragoza Transit Center as the hiss of steam off a Cafe Dolce Vita espresso machine intermingles with the sound of the Pacific Surfliner rumbling along the tracks.”
NINO BLUNT (second from right): “Early mornings on Silver Strand Beach are pure harmony. The sun-warmed sand under foot, the waves fizzing with a gentle growl and the cool ocean air carring a soft rhythm that sets the tone for the day.”
MICHELLE FLIPPO (far right): “From the thunderous cheers at the Dallas Cowboys Training Camp to the melodies of summer concerts and the bold flavors of the Tamale Festival, Oxnard pulses with a unique energy that sets the city a beat apart.”

GET READY TO fiesta
Celebrate Oxnard’s culture and heritage at events like Oxnard Multicultural Festival. See page 84 for more.
of the City SOUL
From the fields to festivals, Oxnard’s cultural vibrancy is everywhere. It’s history in motion, proudly shared and joyfully celebrated.
By Daniel Cabrera
Long before Oxnard became known for its strawberries, it was home to the Chumash people and generations of cultureshaping communities. Today, that vibrant heritage pulses through every festival, every mural, every bite and every beat. This city doesn’t just celebrate culture—it lives it.
Heritage Square
Step into a living time capsule in the heart of Downtown Oxnard. Heritage Square is a preserved collection of 19th-century Victorian and Craftsman homes once owned by Oxnard’s early pioneer families. Today, these relocated architectural gems serve as a community hub that hosts year-round events, tours and local businesses. Take a docentled tour of this unique spot with Friends of
Heritage Square for insights into the original families and home styles, and be sure to visit the Petit Ranch House, water tower and Perkins Pump House to bring the past into vivid view.
When you’re done time traveling, shop Mexican-inspired art and apparel at Pipiripau, order an OPAC Canelatte at Heritage Coffee and Gifts or whisper the password for a drink at The 1901 Speakeasy

Mexican culture runs deep in Oxnard—through music, food, art and traditions— and it shows in everything we do at Pipiripau. Keeping our roots front and center grounds us, inspires our creativity and connects us to our community with a shared sense of identity and purpose.

ROLANDO & HERIBERTO RUBALCAVA Owners, Pipiripau and founders, Palomazo Music Festival
Take a tour with Friends of Heritage Square.

Panteón Fest
Celebrate Día de los Muertos at Panteón Fest. Hosted by the folks at Pipiripau, a local brand with corazón that honors the Mexican cultura through apparel, art and events, Panteón is all about community and culture. From Aztec drumming to theatrical performances and colorful altars, this annual event blends remembrance with music, art and flavor.
Want to immerse yourself? Enter the Catrín and Catrina contest and strut the marigold runway in your skeleton-chic best. Whether enjoying the pulsing beat of the music or the sizzling sensation of cultural food offerings, the only thing more alive than the music at Panteón Fest is your spirit.

Palomazo Music Series and Festival
Downtown turns up the volume during the Palomazo Music Series, a one-stage, one-band jam session where genres like Chicano folk, classic rock, soul and funk take center stage. Each live performance ends with an audience Q&A before building to the ultimate encore: the Palomazo Music Festival, a full-day music celebration in Heritage Square every spring.
Community Celebrations
At the heart of the city is Plaza Park, where Oxnard’s culture, local flavor and community shine during annual events. Celebrate Asian American Pacific Islander Hertiage Month in May at the AAPI Festival. Turn up the heat at the Oxnard Salsa Festival with spicy bites and live music at the end of July, and honor Mexican Independence Day at Fiestas Patrias in September. The weekend-long event kicks off with El Grito (“the cry” of independence) before cranking up the music and family fun. October’s Oxnard Multicultural Festival showcases global traditions through cultural booths, dance
and food from countries around the world. And during fall, the city transforms for the Day of the Dead, with altars, art installations and community-wide celebrations, from OPAC’s Día de los Muertos Celebration to food truck nights and a six-foot Catrina display in front of the Carnegie Art Museum

Agriculture & Farming
Oxnard’s agricultural roots trace back to the sugar beet boom of the late 1800s, when immigrant labor from Mexico, China and Japan helped shape its economy and cultural fabric. Today, Oxnard is famous for strawberries, and the Latino community continues to be the heart and soul of its agricultural legacy. Visitors can explore that legacy firsthand at the Oxnard Historic Farm Park, which preserves original structures from the city’s early ranching days. Browse fresh produce and local goods every Thursday (9 a.m.–1:30 p.m.) at the Downtown Oxnard Farmers Market, where the region’s bounty is on display.

Must-Sea History
TAKE A STROLL DOWN MARITIME MEMORY LANE. Featuring a world-class collection, the Channel Islands Maritime Museum is a celebration of the golden age of sailing. The museum’s permanent exhibits showcase a treasure trove of nautical wonders from around the globe—from vibrant seascapes painted by 17th century Dutch and Flemish masters to seafaring artifacts and historical replicas to the stunning model ships of dentist-turned-master craftsman Edward Marple. (Standouts of Marple’s work include the Robert E. Lee model steamboat, which features a working miniature boiler, and the HMS Royal George model ship, a fiveand-a-half-year project built with such meticulous detail that he made his own glass for the windows.)
The family-friendly museum is free for children under 18 (tickets for adults are $10) and offers many fun activities for kids to explore sailing history, including a scavenger hunt and a play area in the front plaza. A rotating art gallery on the second floor and
a speaker series round out the museum experience, ensuring there’s always something new to discover with each visit.
For unique historical insights, take a docent-led tour (included with admission). With a vast reservoir of nautical knowledge, the passionate docents make the art and models come alive with rich details of the ships on display.

What’s special about the harbor is it’s the closest access point to Channel Islands National Park. To me, the park is one of the most incredible places on the planet. The biodiversity, scenery and isolation are amazing. It’s a joy to take people out to a place that I love so much.

Look for dolphins during your ferry ride to and from the island.

You don’t have to fly to Patagonia or pack crampons to find a wild, oncein-a-lifetime adventure. Sometimes, all it takes is an hour’s ferry ride from Oxnard’s Channel Islands Harbor and a half-mile hike.
I set out with a group of friends for an overnight camping trip on Anacapa Island—one of the five islands that comprise Channel Islands National Park. It turned out to be, by all accounts, one of the best camping trips of our lives.
It started with the realization that California’s least-visited national park was literally an hour drive and a short boat ride away from our home in Los Angeles. I’ve spent a lot of time exploring the amazing underwater world that surrounds the island, but I’d never actually stepped foot on land before. This needed to change.
At 1:30 p.m. on a Saturday, 10 of us boarded an Island Packers ferry headed for East Anacapa Island. An hour of sea spray, selfies and squeals (courtesy of the megapod of dolphins surfing our wake and the occasional humpback whale) later, we hit the landing dock jutting out from the cliffs above. After unloading our gear, we climbed the infamous 157 steps to the top (think StairMaster with a view).
Cue the seabirds. Thousands of western gulls, in a cacophony of squawks, welcomed us in what felt like an Attenborough-meetsHitchcock fever dream. Anacapa hosts the largest breeding colony of endangered California brown pelicans and western gulls in the world. On the island, you see these birds not as parking lot scavengers but majestic, monogamous guardians of speckled eggs, nesting among the cliffside wildflowers.
We hiked to the campsite, stopping at every bend to gawk at the views. In one direction: waves battering ancient cliffs. In the other: a historic lighthouse suspended above rolling grasslands and a blanket of golden coreopsis in bloom. What Anacapa lacks in real estate (there are
Take in the endless sunset views.

As we took in the view, stars shimmered above and it was silent save for our laughter, the birds and the waves crashing on the rocky beaches below. It felt like we had the whole island to ourselves.
DOLPHIN Delight
only two miles of hiking trails on the island), it makes up for in drama. You’d be hardpressed to find something unenjoyable to fix your eyes upon.
We made camp fast, hurrying to pitch our tents and unfurl our sleeping bags, and before we could even think about food, we bolted for the island’s crown jewel:

Inspiration Point. Golden hour was soon in full swing—the setting sun glistened off the ocean, casting a warm glow across the landscape. The line of rugged islands stretching across the horizon looked more like a screensaver than real life, too perfect to be believed.
Back at camp, hunger hit hard. We took a page out of the Oxnard playbook and fired up some tacos: ground beef, peppers, onions, tortillas, hot sauce. Simple, satisfying and somehow gourmet when enjoyed under moonlight and headlamps. For the next few hours, we danced, listened to music and laughed. Fueled by good tunes and warm tequila, we made the moonlit pilgrimage back to Inspiration Point. The full moon lit up the island, casting sharp, surreal shadows so vivid it felt like the sun had clocked in for an overtime shift. As we took in the view, stars shimmered above and it was silent save for our laughter, the birds and the waves crashing on the rocky beaches below. It felt like we had the whole island to ourselves.
We curled up in our tents to a lullaby of wind and seabirds. Morning brought calm skies and even calmer vibes. We woke up, brushed our teeth, made some coffee and ventured over to the landing dock for a morning dip in the ocean. Refreshed and

ISLAND Insight
Chat up the National Park Service rangers and volunteers—they’re walking guidebooks (and genuinely awesome). And, if you’re visiting April through July, prepare for wildflower blooms and the seabird symphony of a lifetime.
recharged from the cold, salty bath, we wandered around the island, soaking in the last of the views, said goodbye to our seagull friends, packed our backpacks and made our way back to the dock for pickup.
But Anacapa had one last mic drop on our way back home. Just when we thought we’d reached the tail end of our trip’s natural climax, all hell broke loose beneath the waves. Before we knew it, we were surrounded by a feeding frenzy. A massive bait ball of sardines was the target of some 1,500 common dolphins, nine humpback whales, dozens of sea lions, 12 different species of seabirds and a boat full of tired campers jumping out of their seats to see what looked like the entire cast of The Blue Planet. Total feeding frenzy. Total chaos. Totally unforgettable.
We returned to the mainland salty, sunburned, severely underrested and 100% sold on the magic of Anacapa Island. Thank you, Anacapa. We’ll be back. Probably with tacos. Definitely with friends.

Local Icon
RHYTHM MAKERS
From rock gods to Latin legends, the world’s best drummers trust their sound to DW Drums. Behind every iconic beat is a kit born right here in Oxnard.

Connor Lombardi, brand manager at DW Drums, jokes that he’s been around the company since before he was born. His grandfather, Don Lombardi, a touring drummer and instructor, started world-renowned Drum Workshop, Inc. as a teaching studio in 1972 with cofounder John Good. The company hit it big with an adjustable drum seat. Decades later, Lombardi’s father is now the CEO.
“Unofficially, I’ve been here my whole life,” says Lombardi. “It’s funny, I still walk through the shop most days, and there’s a couple of team members that remember when my mom was pregnant with me coming through the shop … I joke that I was born at DW.”
One of Lombardi’s favorite things to do at DW Drums is lead free factory tours (every Thursday at 2 p.m.) for anyone who makes a reservation.
“John Good coined the phrase that this is ‘Candy Land’ for a lot of people. This is the mecca of drums,” Lombardi says of the facility. Not only do everyday drum enthusiasts get a kick out of DW Drum kits, but famous artists like Blink-182’s Travis Barker, Alice Cooper’s Glen Sobel, Mötley Crüe’s Tommy Lee, and singersongwriter Sheila E. do, too.
Tours walk visitors through the drum-making process, from choosing the type of wood that will be heated and shaped into a circle to selecting the colorful designs and lacquers that make each drum a work of art. The grand finale of the tour is an elaborate, gold-plated drum set, which toured with drumming icon Neil Peart of Rush.
No other drum manufacturer in the world offers such a close-up look at the design and building process.
“It’s definitely not normal to be able to have this level of access to a major musical instrument manufacturer,” says Lombardi. “It’s very unique.”

OXNARD’S PUNK ROCK CLAIM TO FAME
With its origins in 1970s surf and skateboard culture, Nardcore, a combination of the words “Oxnard” and “hardcore,” went on to influence countless young musicians with its screeching guitars and turbulent tempos.
While early hardscrabble venues for Nardcore shows included a dilapidated former roller rink and a metal Quonset hut at Oxnard Airport, Nardcore bands today frequent The Mystery Shop in downtown and Mrs. Olson’s, not far from the ocean waves that propel the fast-charging style of punk rock.
A good place to check out Nardcore memorabilia is neighborhood haunt The Strandwich in the Silver Strand Beach community, where walls are adorned with concert posters and photographs of famous Nardcore bands including Ill Repute, Agression and Dr. Know.

It’s no secret that The 1901 is one of Oxnard’s must-visit restaurants and the city’s only speakeasy. Brunch Hard
Whether you’re craving sweet, savory or a bit of both, this coastal city serves up morning delights.
In Oxnard, brunch isn’t just a meal—it’s a lifestyle. Start your day at The Blend Superfood Bar in The Annex Food Hall at The Collection at RiverPark, where the classic açaí bowl starts with a base of açaí, banana, strawberry and apple juice before being topped with granola, fruit and a drizzle of honey. It’s a refreshing way to fuel up for the day ahead.
For a cozy cafe experience, head to Cafe Dolce Vita inside the John C. Zaragoza Transit Center. While the Latte de Olla is perhaps the most popular drink on the menu, the iced matcha latte is something special. And when paired with a Danish, croissant or even a turkey sandwich on brioche? Perfection. Don’t forget to snap a selfie in front of the Greetings From Oxnard mural by Maxfield Bala as you step off the train.

If hearty comfort food is what you seek, BG’s Cafe in Downtown Oxnard delivers. For coffee aficionados, Ragamuffin Coffee Roasters in The Annex Food Hall brews up a vanilla cold brew that’s sweet (it’s crafted with house-made vanilla syrup) and oh-so refreshing. Pro tip: Order the avocado-chili oil toast as a coffee accompaniment.
