ROSS TIGER BACK OPEN FOR BUSINESS AFTER RESTORATION WORKS

Vital works have been completed on one of Grimsby’s most famous ships – meaning it’s back open for business!

From painting to helping prevent rusting, there has been plenty going on to keep the Ross Tiger in ship shape.

One of 12 in the cat class of trawler, the Tiger is getting several areas repainted – including the iconic winch, 42 replacement anodes attached to the hull to prevent corrosion of her hull for the next 5 years, new information boards installed in the educational area of the ship, various inspections on the mast and much more. These works are part of a series of ongoing works to help repair and maintain, funded by the Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF).

After her life as a trawler, Ross Tiger worked as an emergency standby vessel for oil rigs in the newly emerging North Sea oil industry.

However, following the devastating effects of the Piper Alpha explosion in 1988, the value of such vessels was truly recognised and it was deemed that purpose built ships with a larger safety capacity would be needed. Traditional trawlers in the role, like Ross Tiger, were then repurposed.

Owned by CAM Shipping at the time, the Tiger was sold to the Council for just £1 in 1991 and brought into the dock where it sits now. Coincidentally, the £1 coin that was used in the purchase was later gifted to the museum and is proudly displayed with the Bill of Sale in the Skipper’s Cabin – try to spot it next time you’re aboard!

The restoration team at Great Grimsby Borough Council identified original fixtures that needed to be replaced to return her to her fishing appearance. This included sourcing a mast from the Grimsby trawler Crystal Palace and an original Robertsons Electric Trawl Winch from the Grimsby trawler Huddersfield Town. The firm carrying out these works were

a local ship builders called Harris and Garrod –the same firm who have attached the anodes to the ship in this most recent spate of repairs and maintenance.

Other local firms that supported this work include Bacon Engineering, Bird and Goodwin, Lincs Electrical, and Coopers Painting Contractors as well as marine consulting engineers, Beckett Rankine of London.

By carrying this out, it means groups of school children, residents and visitors to the town can continue to learn about Grimsby’s past and the vocation that made the town what it is today.

For David Ornsby, Operations Manager at the centre, this is a momentous occasion. He said: “We’re delighted that in Ross Tiger’s 70th year afloat we can do this extensive work that will help to keep her looking as she should for Grimsby and our visitors.

“This funding, and support of our Facilities Management colleagues at NELC, have allowed for crucial works to take place that will extend the ships life with us. We are continually looking for opportunities for funding and will be working to do all we can to ensure that this icon of our town and local heritage story can continue to perform her vital role for many years to come.”

Councillor Hayden Dawkins, Portfolio Holder for Culture, Heritage and the Visitor Economy, added: “This is great news for the borough and for those who risked their lives fishing in these boats.

“It’s amazing to see the work finished and the ship looks like it has a new lease of life.

“This is nothing but good news for North East Lincolnshire and I’m thrilled to see it all come to fruition.”

Full list of works:

• Mast Close Visual inspection and load testing

CLEETHORPES

THE ULTIMATE CINEMA UPGRADE LUXURY RECLINERS NOW OPEN PARKWAY CINEMA

Parkway Cinema Cleethorpes is carrying out a £1m+ refurbishment programme throughout 2026, and the first phase is now complete - the full remodelling of two screens, including building all new terrace stepping to introduce a luxury recliner offer.

In the second phase, three more new luxury screens will open in time for Summer. Offering brand-new supersized 10-metre-wide screens, super-bright digital projection, and spine-tingling Dolby sound, along with our bespoke recliner seating.

The third stage will reinvent the bar and foyer area to create a range of warm, welcoming spaces and even more food options.

Key changes to the luxury screens are:

• All new bespoke reclining seats, semi-private booths and daybeds

• 60% fewer seats, doubled the space per customer

• 25% bigger screens, over 10 metres wide.

• Upgraded projection for brightest, sharpest image ever

• Upgraded DOLBY Digital for spine-tingling sound

INTRODUCING OUR NEW LUXURY RECLINERS:

Our luxury fully electric recliners are comfier, wider, and taller than ever before.

With loads of leg room and plenty of space to stretch out, each seat also has a built-in tray table and cup holder, perfect for snacks and drinks.

Our back two rows are even more indulgent, with premium booths for two. A pair of extra cushioned, super-comfy recliners with a shared table between them, enclosed in your own semi-private space, with even more room to relax and enjoy the film.

At the very front of selected screens, we have daybed loungers for two. Plenty of space for two to lie down, with plenty of cushions to get properly comfortable and a direct view of the big screen. Lay back, stretch out, and sink into the experience.

MAJOR RENNOVATION PROGRAMME:

This £1m investment is much more than cosmetic.

To create the right space inside each screen, significant building work is needed, as the new recliners are so much larger that the entire floor and raised seating area have been completely rebuilt.

At the same time, the original screen curtains and structure have been upgraded, with new, larger, brighter screens – 25% larger than the originals.

Parkway partners with other local, independent businesses wherever we can throughout the renovation.

The work has been expertly carried out by local contractors and suppliers which has included many innovations of pre-manufacturing components off-site

to minimise disruption and to enable the cinema to remain open during the renovations.

PARKWAY CINEMA CLEETHORPES is the UK’s largest independent cinema, with 9 screens, a choice of seating styles, a theatre for live shows, and an amazing Event Cinema experience. In addition to the new luxury screens, we also offer:

INSIDE THE INVESTMENT: WHAT THE TEAM HAD TO SAY

“The Parkes’ brothers”

“We’ve been planning this for some time, and as our new venue in Grimsby progresses, this was the right time to go ahead and revitalise Cleethorpes.”

“When Cleethorpes first opened, we were awarded the award for Best New UK Cinema. The whole plan is aiming to live up to that once again, and provide our community with the very best cinema experience.”

“The difference is massive. Screen 5 used to have 184 seats across 10 rows; now it has 70 seats across only 6 rows. Essentially, it’s less than half as many seats and twice the space for every customer.”

“We tested dozens of seats from all over the world, but couldn’t find exactly what we were looking for, so we ended up going direct to the manufacturer in China, and spent weeks working with them. We’ve made the backs significantly taller and wider than standard, with deeper foam and more support. The semi-private booths at the back of the room have a shared table for the all-important snacks and drinks too.”

“The family-feel is really important to us, both for our team but for our customers too. We want to keep that independent feel whilst still bringing everything fully up to date.”

digital surround sound. The seats are all traditional fixed-back cinema seats, with the lowest prices available for the front section, and stadium-style tiered seating at the rear for brilliant views of the screen (and the stage).

TRADITIONAL SCREENS:

Our traditional screens offer a mix of floorand stadium-tier seating, with fixed-back cinema seats and cup holders.

HAYWARD SUITE:

Our smallest screen, also available for private hire and smaller events.

“ANDY COOPER, Parkway General Manager”

“We’re absolutely thrilled to unveil our newly upgraded cinema experience. The installation of our luxury recliners, with all the extra leg room and comfort, marks a huge step forward for us. We want every guest to feel like they’re stepping into something special from the moment they arrive.”

“Seeing the look on our team’s faces during the reveal was fantastic, there’s a real sense of pride and excitement about what we’ve achieved together.

We’re also one of the very few cinemas that’ll be showing the Peaky Blinders film in March, so that’s going to be a great experience too.”

“We can’t wait to welcome everyone back and share this new chapter with our community.”

Father and daughter team (Simon & Zoe Coyne) at local firm CDC ARCHITECTURE express their proud involvement in the project:

“When we designed the original building, it was the very best in cinema design and was awarded the ‘Best New UK Cinema’ in the year it first opened. Working very closely with the cinema operators Parkway, we have transformed the auditoria - including the very best luxury reclining seats, increased legroom and height in the terraced seating rows, huge new cinema screens (larger than a double decker bus!) and breathtaking improvements in sound and vision.”

“Like ourselves at CDC Architecture, all of the contractors and suppliers are local small businesses with a huge amount of pride to ensure that this project is a success and that the Parkway Cleethorpes Cinema remains one of our most important local leisure facilities.”

THE LINCOLNSHIRE SHOW

RETURNS FOR 2026 WITH BRAND - NEW ATTRACTIONS AND FAMILIAR FAVOURITES

Lincolnshire’s biggest day out will celebrate food, farming and the countryside on Wednesday 17th and Thursday 18th June

The countdown is on to the 141st Lincolnshire Show, one of the county’s largest and most anticipated events, promising two action-packed days of entertainment with brand-new features and returning favourites.

Hosted by the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society (LAS), a registered charity dedicated to educating the public on food, farming and the countryside, this year’s Show will take

place at the Lincolnshire Showground on 17th and 18th June.

The annual celebration of country life showcases the best of Lincolnshire, with around 2,500 animals on display, 500 exhibitors and a programme of must-see events that range from educational activities and arts and crafts, to extreme sports and feats of strength.

Among the new attractions for 2026 is a thrilling Dart Chukka Polo Display, delivering fast-paced action and sporting spectacle to crowds. Visitors will be able to experience the skill, speed and precision of the riders and ponies up close in this mesmerising Main Ring performance.

Also appearing this year is the Squibb Freestyle FMX Show, which is set to be an audience favourite with high-energy

motocross stunts and impressive aerial tricks.

Fond favourites such as Hawkeye Falconry, the Shetland Pony Grand National and the Shire Horse of the Year Qualifier will return, as well as the popular Lincolnshire Kitchen - which will be hosted by celebrity chef Rachel Green, showcasing local produce and culinary talent.

Back by popular demand is the Lincolnshire Show Beach, which will provide a seaside escape at the heart of the Showground, giving visitors the chance to unwind, play and soak up the summer atmosphere.

With Lincolnshire home to more than 4,500 farms, the Show remains true to its roots with a strong focus on farming and country life. All funds raised through ticket sales are invested in the LAS’ charity work, including the LAS Education Programme, and are reinvested in producing the Show each year.

Charlotte Powell, CEO of the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society, said:

“The Lincolnshire Show is the flagship event for our county and we’re incredibly excited to be back for the 141st Show in June. With returning favourites like the Rural Voices Stage and the Garden Show, alongside exciting new attractions such as the Polo Display, we’re shaping a Show that celebrates tradition while continuing to evolve for future generations.

“There will be the much-loved Britain’s Fittest Farmer qualifiers by Farmer’s

Weekly, showcasing the strength and resilience of farmers, and we are proud to be the only agricultural show in the country to host a qualifier.

“And as always, education remains at the heart of our society, so we’re inviting local schools to take part in the LAS Schools’ Challenge where they can compete across 10 different categories to learn about food, farming and the countryside.

“We look forward to welcoming you all for the 141st Show, whether you’re a regular visitor or it’ll be your first time celebrating with us - it’s a great opportunity to proudly showcase the rich heritage and culture of Lincolnshire.”

The iconic Lincolnshire Show is a family-friendly day out that draws over 62,000 visitors every year - including 6,000 school children. The 2026 event also marks an exciting new chapter for the Lincolnshire Show, with the appointment of James Matthews as Show Director, who will oversee the event and support its continued growth.

Advanced tickets can be bought for this year’s Show and are available now, priced at £28 for adults, £10 for children (under 3s are free) and £70 for a family (two adults and up to three children). Visitors are encouraged to book in advance to reduce waiting times on the day and secure advanced ticket prices.

APRIL STYLE

SMALL DETAILS, BIG IMPACT

As the seasons shift and lighter days begin to settle in, April is the perfect time to refresh your look with thoughtful updates rather than a complete overhaul. This is the month where small details come into their own, offering simple ways to elevate everyday style without feeling overdone.

Light layering remains key, with transitional pieces such as soft knits, tailored jackets and relaxed shirts forming the foundation of a spring wardrobe. Neutral tones paired with soft pastels create a fresh, wearable palette that works effortlessly from day to evening, making it easy to adapt your look as temperatures change.

Accessories play an increasingly important role at this time of year, helping to define and refine a look. Jewellery, in particular, offers an easy way to introduce subtle change. Fine chains, stacking rings and simple bracelets can add interest without overpowering an outfit, while more distinctive pieces can be used to create a focal point when needed.

There is also a growing interest in jewellery that carries meaning as well as style. Pieces that can be added to over time, such as charm bracelets or modular designs, make thoughtful gifts and allow the wearer to mark special occasions in a personal and lasting way. These items often become part of a wider story, evolving

with each milestone.

Beyond jewellery, small updates such as a new handbag, updated footwear or even a change in fabric and texture can bring a renewed sense of style. These details may seem minor, but they often have the greatest impact, pulling everything together in a considered and cohesive way.

Versatility is also key for the season ahead. Pieces that transition easily between casual and more polished settings allow for a wardrobe that feels both practical and refined, without the need for constant change, helping to build a more curated and wearable collection.

As spring continues to unfold, the focus shifts towards simplicity, quality and personal expression. Whether it is a carefully chosen piece of jewellery or a meaningful gift that evolves over time, April is the ideal time to embrace effortless style and make small changes that leave a lasting impression.

CHRISTOPHER BELL

Christopher Bell, born in 1960, studied art and photography at University level where he was given the perfect environment to let his style develop and form.

Of course such a thing doesn’t happen overnight and even now Christopher experiments with his style and the scenes he portrays within his artwork.

Christopher has always held a special fascination with the vibrancy of colours and perspectives, this inspires the gorgeous backgrounds of his pieces as well as the shining colours that mix and play within his work. Here in his latest collections he has combined these phenomena to startling effect.

Christopher’s love of glasswork and painting allows his pieces to have a depth within his scenes through his clever use of materials and medium. He applies tints and colours to both sides of a special iron free piece of toughened glass before he bakes them in an oven, sometimes for days on end, while the pigments ‘grow’,

fuse, and merge. This lets the colours blend while still ensuring that none of the vibrancy that is so iconic to Christopher is lost.

While Christopher’s scenes change from landscapes to waterscapes to wildflowers one thing is for sure,

Opening Times: Monday to Sunday 10am - 6pm

that it is impossible to enter a room where one of his works hangs and not be drawn like a magnet to its extraordinary lustre and depth.

Now retired, Christopher’s work is a rare find on the market and quickly snatched up by eager collectors!

THE MEANING BEHIND THE MOMENT

There are few moments in life that feel as special as an engagement. It is more than just a question being asked. It is a promise, a step forward and the start of a new chapter shared together. While every proposal is different, the meaning behind it remains the same, a commitment to a future built side by side.

At the centre of that moment is the ring. More than a piece of jewellery, it becomes a lasting symbol of love and intention. It is something worn every day, quietly reminding the wearer of a moment filled with emotion, excitement and hope. Over time, it becomes part of everyday life, carrying memories that grow more meaningful as the years go on.

In a world where trends change quickly, engagement rings hold onto a sense of tradition. They are not chosen lightly, and they are not meant to be replaced. Instead, they are selected with care, with the idea that they will last for years to come, both in style and in meaning. It is this sense of permanence that continues to make them so important. It is not about following fashion, but about choosing something that will still feel right years down the line.

Choosing the right ring, however, is not always straightforward. Today’s buyers have more choice than ever before. From classic designs to more modern styles, from natural diamonds to lab grown options, there is a wide range of

possibilities to consider. For many, it is not just about appearance, but also about finding something that feels right on a personal level.

This is where experience and guidance make all the difference. A trusted jeweller can help take away some of the uncertainty, offering advice and reassurance along the way. Being able to see different styles, understand the options and ask questions in a relaxed setting can turn what feels like a big decision into an enjoyable experience. Taking the time to explore options properly can make the final choice feel even more meaningful.

For over a century, Segal’s Jewellers has been part of these important moments. As a long established, family run business, they have helped generations of couples find the perfect ring to mark their engagement. That experience brings with it a level of care and understanding that is hard to replicate.

One of the things that sets them apart is the variety they offer. With a collection

that includes new, second hand and antique rings, there is something to suit different tastes and preferences. Some are drawn to the character and history of an older piece, while others prefer the clean lines of a more modern design.

There is also the option to create something bespoke. Designing a ring from scratch, or reworking an existing piece, allows couples to add a personal touch and create something truly one of a kind.

An engagement ring is never just about the moment it is given. It is about everything that follows. Choosing it should feel just as special as the proposal itself, marking the beginning of a story that will continue for years to come.

LOOKING AFTER YOUR EYES THIS SPRING

As spring arrives, many of us look forward to longer days, brighter weather and more time outdoors. However, the change in season can also bring new challenges for our eyes. From hay fever to increased sunlight, it’s important to take a little extra care to keep your eyes comfortable and healthy.

One of the most common issues at this time of year is hay fever. Pollen levels begin to rise in spring, often leading to itchy, watery or irritated eyes. If you are affected, keeping windows closed during high pollen days and washing your hands regularly can help reduce irritation. Overthe-counter eye drops may also provide relief, but it is always worth speaking to a pharmacist or your local optician if symptoms persist. Wearing sunglasses outdoors can also help act as a barrier against pollen, reducing the amount that comes into contact with your eyes.

As the sun becomes stronger, UV protection is another key consideration. Many people associate sunglasses with summer, but UV rays can still affect your eyes in spring. Wearing sunglasses with proper UV protection helps reduce glare and protects against long term damage. It is a simple step that can make a noticeable difference, especially on bright days. Choosing good quality lenses with full UV protection is important, as darker lenses alone do not necessarily offer better protection. Wraparound styles can offer added protection on particularly bright or breezy days.

Modern lifestyles can also put strain on our eyes. Long hours spent on screens, whether for work or leisure, can lead to dryness, tiredness and blurred vision. Taking regular breaks is essential.

A simple way to manage this is the 20 20 20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look at something around 6 metres away for at least 20 seconds. It is a small habit that can help reduce eye strain throughout the day.

Balancing screen time with time outdoors can also help. Fresh air and natural light are beneficial not just for your overall wellbeing, but for your eyes too. Even a short walk during the day can give your eyes a break from constant focus on screens and help reduce feelings of fatigue. Staying well hydrated can also support eye comfort and reduce dryness.

Spring is also a great time to update your eyewear. Sunglasses are not only practical but can also be a stylish addition to your look. From classic

shapes to more modern designs, there are plenty of options to suit different tastes while still offering the protection your eyes need.

Looking after your eyes does not have to be complicated. With a few simple steps, protecting them from pollen, reducing screen strain and wearing proper UV protection, you can enjoy everything spring has to offer in comfort.

SPRING CLEANING

THE ULTIMATE RESET GUIDE

The shift into April brings longer days, lighter evenings and the perfect excuse to refresh your home from top to bottom. Spring cleaning is less about tradition and more about creating a space that feels calm, organised and ready for the season ahead.

If you’re not sure where to start, here’s how to approach your spring reset with purpose:

1. START WITH A CLEAR PLAN

Before diving in, take a step back and assess your space. Focus on one room at a time to avoid feeling overwhelmed, prioritising high-use areas such as the kitchen and living room where impact will be immediate and motivation stays high.

2. DECLUTTER FIRST, CLEAN SECOND

feel more inviting, and even small improvements can transform the overall atmosphere of your home, boosting mood, increasing energy levels and creating a more uplifting environment throughout the day.

5. REFRESH SOFT FURNISHINGS

There’s little point cleaning around clutter. Go through cupboards, drawers and wardrobes and remove anything you no longer use. Donate, recycle or store items neatly to create space, improve organisation and make daily routines more efficient.

3. TACKLE THE OVERLOOKED AREAS

Spring cleaning is your chance to go beyond the basics. Skirting boards, light fittings, behind furniture and inside cabinets are often missed but make a noticeable difference once cleaned, leaving your home feeling truly refreshed and complete.

4.

LET THE LIGHT IN

Clean windows inside and out to maximise natural light. Bright, airy spaces instantly

Swap heavier winter fabrics for lighter alternatives. Wash throws, cushion covers and curtains where possible, and introduce fresh textures or colours to reflect the season, helping to create a softer, brighter and more contemporary interior look that feels fresh and welcoming.

6. UPGRADE YOUR STORAGE

Simple storage solutions can have a lasting impact. Baskets, shelving and multi-purpose furniture help keep everything in its place, making it easier to maintain a tidy home long-term and reducing everyday clutter building up again.

7. BRING THE OUTDOORS IN

Fresh flowers, houseplants or even a bowl of seasonal produce can add life to a room. These small touches help connect your interior with the changing season outside, creating a calm, natural and more welcoming living environment.

8. PREPARE YOUR GARDEN SPACES

With warmer weather approaching, now is the time to get outdoor areas ready. Clean garden furniture thoroughly, wash down patios and remove debris built up over winter, ensuring your space is ready for relaxing, dining or entertaining guests comfortably throughout the season, making it a welcoming extension of your home for everyday use.

9. MAINTAIN TREES AND GREENERY

Spring is the ideal time to prune overgrown trees and shrubs, encouraging healthy growth and improving the overall appearance of your garden. In some cases, removing small or poorly positioned trees can help open up space, increase light and create a more usable, balanced and visually appealing outdoor area for everyday enjoyment.

10. CHECK GUTTERS AND EXTERIOR DETAILS

Winter can leave gutters blocked with leaves and debris, so clearing them out now helps prevent water damage and keeps your home in good condition. It’s also a good opportunity to inspect exterior features, check drainage systems and carry out minor maintenance where needed around your property.

With a structured approach and a few thoughtful updates, spring cleaning becomes less of a chore and more of an opportunity. April is the ideal time to reset your space, refresh your routine and create a home that feels lighter, calmer and more enjoyable to live in every day, while also improving overall organisation and comfort.

As homes and outdoor spaces take centre stage during the spring months, this seasonal reset also offers the perfect opportunity to think beyond cleaning and towards longer-term improvements. From upgrading windows and doors to enhance natural light, to reimagining garden layouts for better use of space, April is often when inspiration turns into action, with many homeowners planning projects for the months ahead.

In the Homes and Gardens section of this issue, we explore practical ways to elevate both interiors and exteriors, with expert insights, seasonal trends and ideas designed to add comfort, style and value. Whether you are considering a full renovation, a garden redesign or simply looking for smaller updates that make a meaningful difference, there are opportunities at every level, whatever your budget or lifestyle needs.

Spring is ultimately about renewal, and your home should reflect that. With the right balance of maintenance, thoughtful upgrades and creative touches, your space can evolve with the season, becoming brighter, more functional and perfectly suited for the months ahead, ready to be enjoyed throughout spring and summer.

A SPRING DAY OUT AT HUMBER BRIDGE GARDEN CENTRE

Spring doesn’t arrive quietly at Humber Bridge Garden Centre. It stretches, yawns, and bursts into colour and chatter, and nowhere is that more evident than at Easter, when the site transforms into a gentle collision of family adventure, garden inspiration and good old-fashioned wandering.

This year’s Easter line-up leans into what the centre does best: turning a simple visit into a full day out. Families can follow the Easter hunt across the site, with little explorers weaving their way between clues and surprises, while the Easter colouring competition offers a quieter moment for creativity (and a chance to win a prize or two). On Easter Friday, the alpacas return, bringing plenty of charm, photo opportunities and a guaranteed crowd pleasing highlight. It’s the kind of place where muddy boots and chocolate sticky fingers are practically part of the dress code, and where the pace slows just enough for families to truly settle in and enjoy it all.

hopeful pots on a patio. The centre prides itself on being “teeming with possibilities,” and it shows, with everything from practical tools to statement pieces ready to shape outdoor spaces of any size.

But beyond the Easter buzz lies the real magic, the steady heartbeat of the Garden Centre itself.

Step into the plant area and you’re greeted with possibility. Rows of vibrant bedding plants, shrubs and perennials offer the promise of transformation, whether you’re working with a sprawling garden or a few

One of the true highlights, particularly at this time of year, is the collection of David Austin Roses. These aren’t just plants, they’re living heirlooms, bred for their scent, structure and unapologetic romance. As an approved stockist, the centre offers a carefully curated display that has become something of a draw, with varieties that bring both nostalgia and drama to any garden. Even for those who don’t know their climbers from their ramblers, it’s hard not to be pulled in by the perfume alone.

Elsewhere, the experience broadens. The Food Hall invites visitors to take a piece of the day home with them, stocked with local produce and unique gifts. The adjoining retail units provide an elevated experience for customers with offerings from clothes and jewellery to dog grooming.

And then there’s a quieter, tail-wagging corner of the site that deserves its own spotlight: Humber Raw. For dog owners, it’s a destination within a destination, specialising in raw and natural pet food that aligns with the centre’s broader ethos of quality and care. Fittingly, the entire site is dog-friendly, making it easy for four-legged companions to join in the Easter outing.

Of course, no visit is complete without a pause at the restaurant, where overlooking the water with a coffee or a generous lunch becomes part of the ritual. It’s this layering of experiences, garden, retail, food, family activities, that elevates the centre beyond its name.

Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Humber Bridge, the garden centre has always aimed to be more than a place to shop. It’s a place to linger, to gather ideas, and, especially at Easter, to make a day of it .

Because here, spring isn’t just something you plant. It’s something you step into.

INSIDE HULL’S NEW KUTCHENHAUS SHOWROOM

PREMIUM GERMAN KITCHENS IN THE CITY CENTRE

Located on George Street in the city centre, the recently opened Kutchenhaus Hull showroom is bringing contemporary German kitchen design to the region. Combining modern style with practical innovation and expert design advice, the showroom is quickly establishing itself as a destination for anyone exploring ideas for a new kitchen.

Opened in October 2025, the showroom occupies the historic site that once housed the well-known Browns Books store. The building has been thoughtfully reimagined, transforming a familiar landmark into a sleek, modern space dedicated to kitchen design and home inspiration.

A NEW DESTINATION FOR KITCHEN INSPIRATION

Stepping inside the showroom, visitors are welcomed by a series of beautifully presented kitchen displays designed to showcase the possibilities of modern living. The space features eleven fully styled German kitchens, each demonstrating different layouts, colour palettes, finishes and storage solutions.

Rather than simply displaying cabinets and appliances, every kitchen has been carefully designed to feel like a real living space. From sleek handleless designs to more classic finishes, the displays help visitors imagine how different materials and layouts might work in their own homes.

This immersive approach makes the showroom particularly appealing for those at the early stages of planning a renovation. Even a casual visit can spark ideas, offering inspiration for clever storage solutions, elegant surfaces and contemporary openplan living.

GERMAN ENGINEERING AND DESIGN QUALITY

Kutchenhaus is part of Nobilia, widely recognised as Europe’s largest kitchen manufacturer. The company combines precision German engineering with contemporary design, producing kitchens that balance durability, efficiency and style.

For homeowners, this means kitchens that are not only visually striking but also built to withstand everyday life. Ergonomic layouts, integrated appliances and intelligent storage systems are designed to make cooking and living spaces more functional.

Each kitchen can be customised with a wide range of finishes, colours and configurations, allowing homeowners to create a space tailored to their lifestyle. Whether the vision is sleek and modern or warm and traditional, the design options offer considerable flexibility.

To provide additional reassurance, Kutchenhaus kitchens come with a tenyear furniture warranty, reflecting the manufacturer’s confidence in the quality of its products.

A PERSONAL APPROACH TO DESIGN

The Hull showroom is run by owners Vincent and Alexandrea, alongside experienced kitchen designer Mark, who brings decades of industry knowledge to the team.

Visitors can book a free design appointment either in the showroom or online. During these relaxed consultations, the team works closely with customers to understand their space, lifestyle and budget, guiding them through the design process from initial ideas to the finished plan.

A FRESH ADDITION TO THE REGION’S HOME DESIGN SCENE

As more homeowners invest in improving their living spaces, the kitchen remains one of the most transformative rooms in the house. With its inspiring displays, expert guidance and focus on quality craftsmanship, Kutchenhaus Hull offers a convenient place for people across the wider region to explore new ideas and possibilities.

Whether planning a complete renovation or simply gathering inspiration for the future, a visit to the showroom provides a glimpse of how thoughtful kitchen design can enhance both the look and the experience of modern home life.

Those interested in exploring the possibilities further can request a free design brochure or arrange a complimentary design consultation with the showroom team. Appointments can be booked either in person at the George Street showroom or online, giving visitors the opportunity to discuss ideas, layouts and materials while gaining expert guidance on creating a kitchen tailored to their home and lifestyle.

APRIL

THE MONTH THE GARDEN COMES ALIVE

A GARDEN AWAKENS

April is the month when the garden truly shakes off winter and surges into growth. Buds swell, borders fill out, blossom appears in clouds of pink and white, and lawns suddenly seem to need mowing twice a week. Each warm day reshapes the garden, and every shower softens the soil and stirs life beneath it. This is a month of momentum—full of colour, promise and the satisfying sense that the gardening year is finally in full swing.

RAPID GROWTH AND SUDDEN SETBACKS

Although April brings an explosion of greenery, it is also a time of rapid change that can catch gardeners off guard. Tender shoots remain vulnerable to late frosts, sudden downpours and Lincolnshire’s sharp east winds. Keep fleece handy, check young plants regularly, and move pots or seedlings to shelter when temperatures dip. April rewards attentiveness: the more often you look, the more you’ll catch tasks at exactly the right moment.

TIME FOR ACTION IN THE BORDERS

If February and March are months of preparation, April is the month of action. The soil has warmed, perennials are emerging and beds are ready for their first planting of the year. Plant new perennials now so they can establish before summer heat arrives. Lift and divide overgrown clumps of hostas, asters, rudbeckias and hardy geraniums if this wasn’t done in March. Install plant supports early—metal hoops, bamboo wigwams or twiggy pea sticks all work well and look natural once plants grow through them.

MULCHING AND SHRUB CARE

Mulching is still worthwhile in early April if you haven’t already done it. A 5 cm layer of well-rotted compost helps suppress weeds and lock in moisture ahead of the hotter months. Many spring-flowering shrubs, such as forsythia, flowering currant and early spiraea, reach their peak now. Enjoy the display, then prune them as soon as flowering finishes to shape the plant and encourage fresh wood for next year’s blooms. Lightly trim evergreens this month too, but avoid hard pruning until later in spring.

MONITORING NEW GROWTH

April is also the time to monitor new shrub growth. Check dogwoods, hydrangeas and buddleias planted in previous seasons to ensure shoots are strong and upright. Apply a slow-release feed around their bases and water well afterwards to support vigorous spring growth.

THE VEGETABLE GARDEN TAKES OFF

In the vegetable garden, April signals the start of the busy season. Soil temperatures are finally high enough for direct sowing. Carrots, beetroot, lettuce, spinach, spring onions, chard and peas can all be sown straight into prepared beds. Broad beans can still go in, and potatoes should be planted by mid-month. Indoors or under cover, tomatoes, cucumbers, courgettes and squash seedlings will be growing strongly. Begin hardening them off toward the end of the month, but avoid rushing them outdoors—cool nights can still cause damage.

WEEDS AND WILDLIFE WAKE UP

Weeds also leap into life in April. A quick weekly hoe will keep them easily under control and save significant effort later in the season. Wildlife becomes more active

too. Birds begin nesting, so avoid hedge cutting or heavy pruning. Keep feeders topped up and provide clean water. Early pollinators return as well, making plants like pulmonaria, primroses and early herbs valuable sources of nectar.

A MONTH TO WORK AND TO ENJOY

April brings vibrancy, pace and possibility to the garden. The tasks may be many, but each one contributes to the abundant months ahead. Take time to pause and enjoy the changes—April is a month to savour as much as it is to work.

CALOR SHOP GRIMSBY

MORE SERVICE WITH EVERY BOTTLE!

For three decades, The Calor Shop Grimsby has been a familiar name to households, tradespeople and outdoor enthusiasts across North East Lincolnshire. What began as a modest local outlet supplying bottled gas has grown into one of the region’s most trusted independent suppliers of Calor gas, heating appliances and outdoor living products—all while remaining a proud family-run business.

At the heart of the company’s story are two generations of the Clark family. Founder Bob Clark established the business 30 years ago with a simple aim: to provide reliable access to bottled gas and essential equipment for homes and businesses across the area. From its original base on Hainton Avenue, the shop quickly built a loyal customer following. Residents knew they could rely on Bob not only for Calor gas cylinders but also for practical advice, dependable supply and friendly service.

As demand for LPG gas products grew throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, the business expanded its range. Alongside propane, butane and patio gas cylinders, customers could now find heaters, barbecue equipment, regulators, hoses and other accessories. The shop gradually evolved from a simple gas supplier into a specialist destination for anyone needing reliable gas solutions.

Today, the business supports a wide variety of customers—from homeowners and caravan owners to campers, builders, tradespeople and local hospitality businesses. Whether supplying Campingaz cylinders for outdoor cooking, mobile heaters for indoor use, or barbecues and

patio heaters for summer entertaining, the focus has always remained the same: offering dependable products with expert advice.

In recent years, the next generation has taken the helm. Dennis Clark, Bob’s son, now leads the company, continuing the values established by his father while guiding the business into its next chapter. Having grown up around the shop, Dennis understands both the industry and the community it serves.

A major milestone came in April 2023, when the business relocated from its long-standing Hainton Avenue premises to a larger and more modern site on Kent Street in Grimsby. The move allowed the company to create improved customer facilities, including a welcoming reception area, expanded showroom space and easier parking for

visitors. It also gave The Calor Shop the opportunity to showcase an even wider range of products for home heating, outdoor cooking and specialist gas uses.

Despite these developments, the ethos of the business remains unchanged. The Calor Shop continues to pride itself on personal service, trusted expertise and strong community relationships.

As the company celebrates its anniversary year, it stands as a reminder that some of the most successful local businesses are those built on reliability, knowledge and genuine customer care. More than thirty years after Bob Clark first opened the doors, The Calor Shop Grimsby continues to keep homes warm, power outdoor living and support customers across the region.

EXHAUST-ED OF YOUR CURRENT CAR?

LOCAL CAR RETAILER SHARES TOP TIPS ON SPRING CLEANING YOUR CAR BEFORE YOU SELL

With brighter days approaching, many drivers are thinking about upgrading their vehicle – and a thorough spring clean is one of the simplest ways to maximise its value before putting it up for sale.

Stoneacre Lincoln, based on Lincoln Fields in Lincoln, has shared expert advice on how to prepare your car properly if you’re planning to sell and invest in something new.

Andy McInnes, Business Manager at Stoneacre Lincoln, said: “Spring is one of the busiest times of year for people changing their cars. After winter, vehicles often show signs of heavier use – from interior wear to road salt affecting paintwork. There is a stark difference in both buyer interest and part exchange valuations when a car has been properly prepared, even when mileage and age are the same

1. DECLUTTER COMPLETELY

“If you’re preparing to sell, start by removing all personal belongings – from paperwork and chargers to items stored under seats and in the boot. Buyers want to imagine themselves in the car, so presenting a clean, neutral space is key.”

2. DEEP CLEAN THE INTERIOR

“Vacuum thoroughly, paying attention to footwells, seat creases and hard-to-reach areas. Clean dashboards, screens and door panels with appropriate products to restore a well-maintained finish. A fresh, tidy cabin immediately signals that the car has been cared for.”

3. REVIVE SEATS AND UPHOLSTERY

“Stains and wear on seats can lower perceived value. Use the correct cleaner for fabric or leather and, where possible, condition leather to restore suppleness. Eliminating odours and refreshing upholstery helps recreate that ‘nearly new’ feel buyers love.”

4. RESTORE THE EXTERIOR SHINE

“Winter grime, road salt and tar can dull paintwork and lead to corrosion.

A proper wash — including wheel arches and alloys — followed by a polish or wax will enhance shine and protect the bodywork. Clean, sparkling paintwork makes your car far more attractive in photos and in person.”

5. CHECK THE DETAILS

“Top up screen wash, replace worn wiper blades, and ensure tyres are clean and correctly inflated. Small finishing touches can make a big difference when a potential buyer or retailer assesses your vehicle.”

If you are thinking of purchasing a new car, Stoneacre Lincoln invites prospective buyers to speak with its expert team.
