STEEL SIGNING MARKS SIGNIFICANT PROGRESS ON FRESHNEY PLACE DEVELOPMENT
A construction milestone was achieved last week on the £50 million redevelopment of Freshney Place shopping centre in Grimsby.
Representatives from North-East Lincolnshire Council (NELC), construction partners GMI and local dignitaries gathered to celebrate the start of the structural steel frame work. The signing ceremony marked the progress made on site to date, and the collaborative efforts of all the partners involved.
Led by North-East Lincolnshire Council (NELC), and backed by government funding, Freshney Place’s development is part of a broader strategy to regenerate Grimsby town centre. With its central location, the shopping centre is pivotal to this vision and will be transformed into a vibrant, multi-use destination combining retail, leisure, healthcare and community space.
“It’s an exciting time for the town. Grimsby is transforming rapidly and Freshney Place is at the heart of it,” said Philip Jackson, Leader of the Council. “Along with the other changes we are delivering in Grimsby, this project will help to redefine how people use our town centre by blending retail with leisure, entertainment and services.”
The project is expected to diversify town centre footfall through a broad mix of uses, appealing to a wide range of ages and demographics. Securing a pre-let for a multi-screen cinema Parkway, alongside additional leisure tenants, will help establish a strong day-tonight economy for the town.
Ed Weston, Regional Director for Yorkshire at GMI Construction Group, said: “This steel signing is a key milestone and a visible sign of the momentum on site. Seeing the cinema framework take shape brings the ambition of this scheme to life and demonstrates the scale of what’s being delivered.

“We’re proud to be working with North East Lincolnshire Council, Queensberry and Freshney Place on a project that will have a lasting impact on the town centre, creating new opportunities and a destination the community can be proud of.”
Elliot Andrews, Centre Manager at Freshney Place said: “As consumer needs evolve beyond traditional retail, the centre’s blend of shops, essential services and leisure will ensure Freshney Place remains a firm favourite - and one which meets modern-day requirements.”

15TH MARCH 2026
A THOUGHTFUL WAY TO SAY THANK YOU

Mother’s Day is a chance to show appreciation, whether for a mother or someone who has quietly filled that role with care and constant support.
Mother’s Day is not about grand gestures. It is simply an opportunity to recognise the steady presence of someone who has offered guidance, reassurance and encouragement over the years. For some, that is a mother. For others, it may be a grandmother, stepmother, aunt or close family friend who has played that role in quieter but equally meaningful ways. However it is defined, the sentiment behind the day remains the same.
Thoughtful gifts often mean more than elaborate ones. Jewellery continues to be a popular choice, not for extravagance but for sentiment. A necklace chosen with care, a simple bracelet or a pair of earrings can become something worn often, becoming a small reminder of the thought behind it. Local jewellers offer a range of pieces, from classic gold and silver designs to more contemporary styles, making it easy to find something that feels personal rather than showy.
Flowers and cards still have their place, but time together is often what people remember most. An easy afternoon spent browsing at a garden centre, choosing a plant for
the season ahead or stopping for coffee can turn the day into something relaxed and unforced. Wandering among spring displays or sitting down for lunch in light surroundings creates a celebration that feels natural rather than hurried.
Sharing a meal remains one of the simplest ways to mark the occasion. Rather than cooking under pressure, many families choose to go out together, selecting somewhere welcoming and comfortable. Restaurants set within garden surroundings or cafés overlooking greenery offer space to talk and enjoy each other’s company. A relaxed table, good food and easy conversation allow the day to unfold at its own pace.
For those who prefer to gather at home, a carefully prepared lunch can feel just as meaningful. Fresh ingredients sourced locally, seasonal vegetables and a favourite dessert served without fuss create an atmosphere that is generous and warm. Often, it is these quieter meals that are remembered long after the day has passed.

Perhaps the simplest gift of all is giving her permission to put her feet up. Let the day unfold without expectation. Take over the cooking, clear the table before she reaches for a plate, and allow her to enjoy being looked after for a change. A slow morning with coffee brought to her, a favourite magazine to hand or a film chosen without compromise can feel quietly indulgent. Small gestures, offered without fuss, often speak volumes.
At its heart, Mother’s Day is about appreciation. It is a chance to say thank you for the everyday things that are easily overlooked, for the steady encouragement and the comfort offered without expectation. Whether marked with a piece of jewellery, a shared meal out or a gentle afternoon together, what matters most is the thought behind it.
However it is celebrated, the day does not need to be elaborate. A simple plan, a little consideration and time spent together are often more than enough. The quiet moments are usually the ones that stay with us.

This Mother’s Day offers a simple opportunity to spend time somewhere thoughtfully considered. Set close to the Humber Bridge, Humber Bridge Garden Centre combines relaxed browsing, dining and open surroundings in a way that encourages visitors to slow down and enjoy the day.
We are offering one family the chance to win a meal for two adults and two children (aged 10 and under) at The Old Tile Works Restaurant. It is an invitation to experience the setting first hand, whether beginning with a quiet wander through the centre or simply settling in for lunch overlooking the lake.
The restaurant provides a welcoming space suited to all ages, making it easy to turn the occasion into a gentle afternoon rather than a hurried celebration.

CELEBRATING EASTER IN LINCOLNSHIRE
Easter tends to arrive quietly each year, just as the days begin to feel lighter. One week the mornings still carry a chill, and the next there is blossom on the trees and evening light stretching a little further into the day. It brings with it a natural pause, a moment to reset before the months ahead gather pace.
For many families, the school break is as much a part of Easter as the chocolate eggs. The days can feel long without a little thought, but they do not need to be filled with elaborate plans. Often, it is the simplest things that are remembered. A walk along the Lincolnshire coast, a wander through a nearby market town or
an unhurried afternoon in the garden can feel more than enough when the air finally begins to soften.
Children rarely need grand entertainment. A homemade egg hunt with handwritten clues tucked behind cushions or hidden beneath hedges can bring genuine
excitement. Baking together, whether decorating biscuits or attempting hot cross buns, often ends in laughter rather than perfection. On brighter days, football in the park, kite flying or helping to plant early flowers offer easy ways to spend time outdoors. When the weather turns, a trip to the cinema to see the
A SKEGNESS OPEN TOP ADVENTURE

latest family release can feel like a real treat, followed perhaps by an ice cream or an early supper together. Board games and a family film night at home restore a slower rhythm too.
Across Lincolnshire, Easter often brings a gentle energy to towns and countryside alike. A visit to Lincoln Cathedral and the Bailgate area, a spring walk through the Lincolnshire Wolds, or coastal strolls around Cleethorpes and Mablethorpe finished with fish and chips by the sea remain simple pleasures. Even planning the journey can become part of the adventure. Leaving the car at home and using local bus services allows families to relax, chat and watch the landscape roll by, turning travel time into shared time. Regular coastal services make it easy to explore different stops in a single day, adding a little novelty for younger children and making the outing feel that bit more special.
Preparation for Easter Sunday can also become a family activity rather than a task. A visit to a local butcher, baker or farm shop to choose fresh, locally reared meat and seasonal vegetables adds meaning to the meal. Children can help

select ingredients, carry bags and learn where their food comes from. Back home, cooking Easter lunch together, laying the table, arranging spring flowers and stirring gravy under supervision, creates small rituals that are often remembered long after the chocolate eggs have disappeared. Supporting local producers not only guarantees freshness but keeps the celebration rooted firmly in the community.

This year, Harlaxton Manor will also open its doors over the Easter weekend, inviting visitors to explore its historic interiors and landscaped grounds. With family friendly activities, garden games and seasonal treats, it offers a memorable way to mark the spring break.
Food naturally anchors the long weekend.
A traditional roast still holds its place on many tables, but there is no need for formality. Easter lunches are often at their best when they are relaxed and generous. Fresh flowers, pastel touches and shared dishes set in the centre of the table are more than enough.
At its heart, Easter is less about spectacle and more about noticing the shift in season. Slower mornings, lighter evenings and time spent together are often the only ingredients required. In a county like Lincolnshire, where open skies and wide landscapes create a sense of space, that feeling of renewal feels especially welcome.
However you choose to spend it, Easter offers a reminder that the year is turning and that sometimes the simplest plans are the most meaningful.

PARKWAY CINEMA CLEETHORPES

THE ULTIMATE CINEMA UPGRADE
LUXURY RECLINERS NOW OPEN
Parkway Cinema Cleethorpes is carrying out a £1m+ refurbishment programme throughout 2026, and the first phase is now complete - the full remodelling of two screens, including building all new terrace stepping to introduce a luxury recliner offer.
In the second phase, three more new luxury screens will open in time for Summer. Offering brand-new supersized 10-metre-wide screens, super-bright digital projection, and spine-tingling Dolby sound, along with our bespoke recliner seating.
The third stage will reinvent the bar and foyer area to create a range of warm, welcoming spaces and even more food options.
Key changes to the luxury screens are:
• All new bespoke reclining seats, semi-private booths and daybeds
• 60% fewer seats, doubled the space per customer
• 25% bigger screens, over 10 metres wide.
• Upgraded projection for brightest, sharpest image ever
• Upgraded DOLBY Digital for spine-tingling sound

INTRODUCING OUR NEW LUXURY RECLINERS:
Our luxury fully electric recliners are comfier, wider, and taller than ever before.
With loads of leg room and plenty of space to stretch out, each seat also has a built-in tray table and cup holder, perfect for snacks and drinks.
Our back two rows are even more indulgent, with premium booths for two. A pair of extra cushioned, super-comfy recliners with a shared table between them, enclosed in your own semi-private space, with even more room to relax and enjoy the film.
At the very front of selected screens, we have daybed loungers for two. Plenty of space for two to lie down, with plenty of cushions to get properly comfortable and a direct view of the big screen. Lay back, stretch out, and sink into the experience.
MAJOR RENNOVATION PROGRAMME:
This £1m investment is much more than cosmetic.
To create the right space inside each screen, significant building work is needed, as the new recliners are so much larger that the entire floor and raised seating area have been completely rebuilt.
At the same time, the original screen curtains and structure have been upgraded, with new, larger, brighter screens – 25% larger than the originals.
Parkway partners with other local, independent businesses wherever we can throughout the renovation.
The work has been expertly carried out by local contractors and suppliers which has included many innovations of pre-manufacturing components off-site

to minimise disruption and to enable the cinema to remain open during the renovations.
PARKWAY CINEMA CLEETHORPES is the UK’s largest independent cinema, with 9 screens, a choice of seating styles, a theatre for live shows, and an amazing Event Cinema experience. In addition to the new luxury screens, we also offer:
SCREEN ONE / THEATRE:
A fully equipped live stage where we host comedy nights and pantos, the theatre is also a 300-seater cinema screen with full
INSIDE THE INVESTMENT: WHAT THE TEAM HAD TO SAY
“The Parkes’ brothers”
“We’ve been planning this for some time, and as our new venue in Grimsby progresses, this was the right time to go ahead and revitalise Cleethorpes.”
“When Cleethorpes first opened, we were awarded the award for Best New UK Cinema. The whole plan is aiming to live up to that once again, and provide our community with the very best cinema experience.”
“The difference is massive. Screen 5 used to have 184 seats across 10 rows; now it has 70 seats across only 6 rows. Essentially, it’s less than half as many seats and twice the space for every customer.”
“We tested dozens of seats from all over the world, but couldn’t find exactly what we were looking for, so we ended up going direct to the manufacturer in China, and spent weeks working with them. We’ve made the backs significantly taller and wider than standard, with deeper foam and more support. The semi-private booths at the back of the room have a shared table for the all-important snacks and drinks too.”
“The family-feel is really important to us, both for our team but for our customers too. We want to keep that independent feel whilst still bringing everything fully up to date.”

digital surround sound. The seats are all traditional fixed-back cinema seats, with the lowest prices available for the front section, and stadium-style tiered seating at the rear for brilliant views of the screen (and the stage).
TRADITIONAL SCREENS:
Our traditional screens offer a mix of floorand stadium-tier seating, with fixed-back cinema seats and cup holders.
HAYWARD SUITE:
Our smallest screen, also available for private hire and smaller events.
“ANDY COOPER, Parkway General Manager”
“We’re absolutely thrilled to unveil our newly upgraded cinema experience. The installation of our luxury recliners, with all the extra leg room and comfort, marks a huge step forward for us. We want every guest to feel like they’re stepping into something special from the moment they arrive.”
“Seeing the look on our team’s faces during the reveal was fantastic, there’s a real sense of pride and excitement about what we’ve achieved together.
We’re also one of the very few cinemas that’ll be showing the Peaky Blinders film in March, so that’s going to be a great experience too.”
“We can’t wait to welcome everyone back and share this new chapter with our community.”
Father and daughter team (Simon & Zoe Coyne) at local firm CDC ARCHITECTURE express their proud involvement in the project:
“When we designed the original building, it was the very best in cinema design and was awarded the ‘Best New UK Cinema’ in the year it first opened. Working very closely with the cinema operators Parkway, we have transformed the auditoria - including the very best luxury reclining seats, increased legroom and height in the terraced seating rows, huge new cinema screens (larger than a double decker bus!) and breathtaking improvements in sound and vision.”
“Like ourselves at CDC Architecture, all of the contractors and suppliers are local small businesses with a huge amount of pride to ensure that this project is a success and that the Parkway Cleethorpes Cinema remains one of our most important local leisure facilities.”

STEPHEN HANSON
( IN HIS OWN WORDS )
I have always loved art and knew from an early age that I wanted to become an artist. I’m inspired by so many different artists but back then it was the likes of Arthur Rackham, Brian Froud, Alan Lee, Chuck Close and Frank Frazetta. I was particularly drawn to fantasy and realism and loved the imagination and sense of realism they brought to their work.
I left Batley Art College with a distinction in graphic design and illustration and the first job I took was with a greeting card company. Films however were my passion, particularly ones with special effects like Ray Harryhausen’s Sinbad movies. They were a huge influence on me and opened my eyes to the possibility of careers in films. I learned everything I could about how they were made and about the artists behind the magic.
I spent all my spare time developing my portfolio and after a couple of years started work at Cosgrove Hall

Productions in Manchester. For four years I worked as a visual development artist on projects such as The BFG, Dangermouse and Count Duckula. Since then, I have been fortunate enough to work on films such as Balto, The Corpse Bride, Despicable Me and Flushed Away, Arthur Christmas and Adventures with Pirates. In addition to this, I have worked on various TV commercials and illustrated several children’s books including Enid Blyton’s Secret Seven and Kes Gray’s Nelly the Monster Sitter as well as writing and illustrating Froobie Pink and the Night Noises.

Opening Times: Monday to Sunday 10am - 6pm
A few years ago I was invited to exhibit some of my personal work for the first time, the event was very successful but more importantly it opened my eyes to the possibilities. I think because my work was digital I hadn’t really considered bringing them into the physical world. Now I can’t think of it any other way.
I still love the world of animation and books and take on commissions from time to time, but the fine art world offers up a freedom for my personal work which I find really exciting.

HUMBER BRIDGE GARDEN CENTRE A GARDEN CENTRE WITH MORE TO OFFER
Set beneath the sweeping span of the Humber Bridge, Humber Bridge Garden Centre occupies a site with a story of its own. The Old Tile Works is one of the oldest working tile works in the UK and remains operational today, giving the destination a genuine sense of heritage as well as purpose.

The Old Tile Works Restaurant was the first chapter here and remains the focal point. Set within the character of the historic buildings, it offers breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea in relaxed, light filled surroundings. It is a restaurant in its own right rather than a simple café stop, and for many visitors it is the main reason for making the trip.
Around it, the wider garden centre has developed into a well rounded retail and horticultural destination. Seasonal bedding, shrubs, perennials and trees are displayed with practical inspiration in mind, helping customers visualise how combinations might work at home. The centre is also proud to be a stockist of David Austin Roses, renowned for their fragrance, form and repeat flowering, making it a draw for rose enthusiasts across the region.
Beyond horticulture, the Food Hall adds another dimension, stocked with quality produce, indulgent treats and giftable items. Humber Raw adds another specialist element to the site, operating as a dedicated pet shop with a focus on high quality raw food and
natural products for dogs. Additional retail areas offer homeware, garden accessories and outdoor living products, encouraging relaxed browsing across the site.
The setting itself enhances the experience; with countryside walks close by and the Humber Bridge just moments away, many visitors combine a trip to the centre with time outdoors. It is also dog friendly, welcoming four legged companions throughout the site, which makes it an easy stop before or after a local walk.
What sets Humber Bridge Garden Centre apart is this combination of heritage, dining and lifestyle retail, all anchored by a working tile works with deep roots. It is a place of living history, where good food is enjoyed and the great outdoors is celebrated.
For your chance to experience it for yourself this Mother’s Day, turn to page 06 to enter our special family meal competition at The Old Tile Works Restaurant.

MOVING SEASON
IS SPRING THE BEST TIME TO BUY OR RENOVATE?
As the days grow lighter and gardens begin to bloom, the property market traditionally gathers pace. March is often seen as the unofficial start of moving season, with more homes appearing on the market and buyers feeling motivated to make a fresh start.
WHY DO LISTINGS RISE IN MARCH?
Spring brings a natural sense of optimism. Homes tend to look their best with improved natural light, brighter gardens and fewer winter weather challenges. Sellers who paused plans over Christmas often spend the early part of the year preparing their properties, ready to list in March when buyer interest increases.
Families often aim to move in spring or early summer so they can settle before the new school year. Longer days make it easier to arrange viewings after work, and better weather reduces the stress of removals. For buyers, there is usually more choice available, although well presented homes can attract strong competition.
INTERIOR REFRESH IDEAS
If you are preparing to sell or simply updating your current home, spring is ideal for an interior refresh. Begin with a thorough declutter and deep clean. Clear surfaces and well arranged rooms help buyers picture themselves living there.
Light, neutral paint shades can brighten
walls and make the most of natural daylight. Swapping heavier winter fabrics for lighter cushions, throws and curtains creates a fresher feel. Smaller updates such as new cabinet handles, updated light fittings or refreshed bathroom taps can modernise a space without major expense.
In kitchens, replacing tired white goods can instantly lift the overall look. Modern, energy efficient appliances not only improve day to day living but also reassure potential buyers that the home has been well maintained. Matching finishes and integrated designs can create a more streamlined and contemporary feel.
Spring is also a practical time for larger improvements such as upgrading insulation, replacing worn flooring or improving overall energy efficiency before colder weather returns.
BOOSTING OUTDOOR KERB APPEAL
First impressions matter. Tidy pathways, trim hedges and give the lawn its first careful cut of the

year. Pressure washing driveways and repainting fences can instantly smarten the exterior and frame the garden neatly.
Take a close look at your windows as well. Clean frames and clear glass make a noticeable difference, while investing in new windows can transform the appearance of a property and improve energy performance at the same time. Choosing a style that suits the character of the home can enhance both value and visual appeal.
Add welcoming touches such as potted spring flowers near the entrance and ensure exterior lighting is working properly. These simple improvements show care and attention, helping your home stand out in a busy spring market.
Whether you are planning a move or choosing to invest where you are, spring offers the ideal balance of practical conditions and renewed motivation. With more properties coming to market and homes looking their best, March can be the perfect time to make positive changes that add comfort, style and long term value.

GARDEN READY PREPARING YOUR OUTDOOR SPACE FOR SPRING

March is the moment gardens begin to wake up. The days feel lighter, the soil starts to warm and there is a sense that everything is ready to grow again. It is also the perfect time to get ahead. A few simple jobs now will set your outdoor space up for a colourful and relaxed season.
BRING YOUR LAWN BACK TO LIFE

Winter can leave lawns looking dull and patchy. Start by clearing away fallen leaves and debris with a rake. This allows light and air to reach the grass. If areas feel compacted, gently push a garden fork into the soil to improve drainage.
Bare patches can be reseeded and a spring lawn feed will help encourage fresh growth. When you make that first cut of the year, keep the blades high and trim lightly. Cutting too short too soon can weaken new shoots.
WHAT TO PLANT IN MARCH
March is ideal for sowing hardy flowers such as sweet peas and cornflowers. You can start them indoors or plant directly
outside if the weather is mild. In the vegetable patch, broad beans, carrots, spinach and early potatoes can all go in now.
Refresh borders by removing weeds and adding compost to enrich the soil. If perennials have outgrown their space, divide and replant them. This gives you healthier plants and fills gaps elsewhere in the garden.
SIMPLE CONTAINER INSPIRATION
Containers are a quick way to add colour to patios, doorsteps and balconies. Choose pots with good drainage and plant up cheerful displays with pansies, primroses or dwarf daffodils. Herbs such as rosemary and thyme also thrive in pots and are useful for the kitchen.
Mix taller plants with trailing varieties for a fuller look. Grouping pots together can create an eye catching focal point.
LOOK AHEAD TO OUTDOOR LIVING
Now is a good time to prepare for spring and summer gatherings. Wash down patios, tidy decking and check fences for

any repairs. Bring garden furniture out of storage and give it a clean or fresh coat of paint if needed.
Garden centres are beginning to showcase new season furniture and accessories, from compact bistro sets to generous dining tables. Adding outdoor lighting, cushions or a fire pit can make your space feel welcoming as evenings grow longer.
With a little effort in March, your garden will be ready to flourish and you will be ready to enjoy it.

MARCH
THE MONTH THAT SHAPES ROSES AND SHRUBS FOR THE YEAR AHEAD
March is one of the most important months in the gardening calendar, especially for roses and shrubs. As winter loosens its grip and daylight stretches out, plants begin to stir back into life. This brief window, after the harshest cold has passed but before buds fully break, is the perfect moment to prune, feed, shape and prepare your borders for strong spring and summer growth.

Roses and many deciduous shrubs are just entering their active growth phase. Pruning too early risks frost damage, while pruning too late removes precious new shoots. March offers the ideal balance, allowing gardeners to work confidently without compromising plant energy or vigour.
HYBRID TEAS & FLORIBUNDAS
• Begin by removing any dead, diseased or crossing stems.
• Cut remaining stems back to outward-facing buds.
• Shape the plant into an open, vase-like framework to improve airflow and reduce fungal problems.
SHRUB & ENGLISH ROSES
• These require a lighter touch. Shorten the top third of growth while keeping a graceful outline.
• Remove old, woody stems that no longer flower well.
CLIMBING ROSES
• Tie new, flexible stems horizontally to encourage multiple flowering shoots.
• Remove older stems only if the plant is congested.
• Shorten side shoots to two or three buds.
Roses respond vigorously to correct pruning—most mistakes grow out quickly— so don’t be nervous. Once pruning is finished, give plants a nutritional boost.

Apply a slow-release rose fertiliser or balanced granular feed, then mulch generously with compost or well-rotted manure. Keep mulch a few inches from stems to prevent rot. This combination locks in moisture, suppresses weeds and improves soil structure, supporting steady growth throughout the season.
Different shrubs require different pruning approaches, and understanding these needs leads to healthier plants and better displays.
Shrubs that flower on new wood—such as buddleia, hardy fuchsia and caryopteris— should be pruned hard now to encourage strong new growth and abundant summer blooms.
Shrubs grown for colourful stems, like dogwood (Cornus) and willow (Salix), should also be cut back to low buds in March to stimulate fresh, vibrant stems for next winter.
Evergreens such as box, pittosporum and holly should not be heavily pruned yet, but you can tidy winter damage and lightly reshape if necessary.
Avoid pruning spring-flowering shrubs including forsythia, viburnum and flowering currant this month—cutting now removes the very buds that will soon bloom. These should be pruned immediately after flowering instead.

As you work through your borders, inspect stems for canker, dieback or wind damage. Remove affected growth cleanly and dispose of it to prevent disease spreading. Keep an eye out for early aphids and greenfly; spot them early and gentle methods—such as rubbing pests off, using a sharp jet of water, or encouraging ladybirds—will usually keep populations in check without chemicals.
March rose and shrub care truly follows the principle “a little now, a lot later.” With thoughtful pruning, timely feeding and a fresh layer of mulch, you create the foundation for healthier plants, bigger blooms and a more vibrant garden through spring and summer. Your efforts this month will be rewarded with colour, fragrance and structure that lasts the whole growing season.
