THE THOUGHT OF A VACATION always sounds relaxing – until you actually have to plan for it. That’s when you realize you have 5,000 things to worry about before your feet hit the sand. I’m talking about those little details that can ruing a trip – like misplacing your passport, wondering if you locked the back door and of forgetting to ask your parents to feed the cat. Then there’s the anxiety that comes with actually leaving. Those four walls hold all your worldly positions, so it’s kind of normal that it’s totally a big deal. Still, it’s getting cold, and you have earned a vacation. Don’t let fear stand between you and the perfect tan. Just follow these simple steps for peace of mind that your rental will still be standing when you return. LEAVE YOUR HOME KEY WITH SOMEONE YOU TRUST This is one of those moments where you realize how valuable a good relationship with the neighbours can be. If you’re living in a secure building, you shouldn’t really be letting your friends come and go while you are away, and it’s easier to have someone as close as next door to check on your place. If you’re comfortable with it, tell your neighbour the details of your trip and give them access to your home in case of any emergencies. TELL YOUR LANDLORD In your lease agreement there may be information about vacation procedure (check it!). Either way, let your landlord know if you will be away in case they need to get in touch with you to plan repairs or gain access to your apartment or for any other emergencies. CLEAN YOUR RENTAL Cleaning your rental seems pretty obvious, but it requires a bit more attention before you leave on vacation. Don’t fool yourself in believing that leaving a couple of dirty dishes on the counter won’t make a difference. It will! Do a thorough cleaning. Clean out your fridge of any perishables that wont be good once you come back home. Most importantly, make sure you take out the trash. You don’t want to come home to any surprising odours.

HOLIDAY PREPARATIONS such as tree trimming, present wrapping and hanging lights help get us in the holiday spirit and are lots of fun. But thoughtful packing of seasonal decorations and materials at the end of the holidays for the next year, can keep the fu in what is for some, a stressful time. In other words, it pays to plan, even 12 months ahead. Careful packing and organization prevents damage and breakage, and ensures you can find everything next year. It is worth taking the extra time to organize and preserve your decorations for next year. Here are some tips from Two Men and a Truck to keep in mind while packing away holiday decorations: DELICATE ITEMS • Wrap breakables in paper or bubble wrap. Do not use newspaper - the print may wear off on ornaments. Use tissue or packing paper. Instead of throwing away used paper or junk mail, run it through a paper shredder, it makes great packing filler. • Decorations that contain photographs or food should be sealed in an air tight bag to keep them safe. Sealing photos preserves them and the scent from any food item will attract insects or mice where ever they are stored. • Boxes with dividers are best to pack ornaments in. There are cardboard boxes made especially for fragile items. They come with adjustable inserts that forms individual cells for delicate items. These “Dish Pack” boxes are very popular at all our Two Men and a Truck branches • Keep extra hangers, hooks and ornament parts in a labeled bag or box. LIGHTS • To prevent tangles, wrap lights around empty gift wrapping paper tubes. • Leave the plug accessible by taping the ends of the light strands to the end of the tube. Next year you can quickly test the lights before unwinding them.
WRAPPING PAPER • Hanging garment bags provides good storage for wrapping paper rolls. Use outside pockets for gift tags, cards and tissue paper. • To protect used rolls of paper, cut an empty wrapping paper tube from end to end and slide it over the roll. • Ribbons and bows can be saved and reused, pack loosely so they keep their shape. Some Other Considerations • Wrap holiday candles individually in cellophane and store in a cool place so they do not melt together. • Pack an “open first” box. Place the decorations you use first in here with essentials such as extension cords. • Use a “Wardrobe Box” to hang and store seasonal clothing that you only wear twice a year like that special snowman sweater from your mother-in-law or that flashing Christmas tie. This way you can find it, wear it, and store it away on a hanger easily. • If you haven’t used a decoration in a few years donate it. If it is damaged, get rid of it. • Take special care if you are storing your items in a damp area like your basement. Don’t store boxes near sources of heat and moisture. • The most important tip is to label every box. The more detailed the description, the easier it will be to find things. Use different colors to distinguish different holidays. For example, use orange for Halloween, brown for Thanksgiving, and red or green for Christmas. • Take a digital photo of special care items like snow globes or wreaths, print them off on regular paper and tape the photo to the outside of the box as an easy description of what’s inside. WHILE MANY PEOPLE idealize home ownership and cling to it as a goal, in this time of less stable employment and rising interest rates, it’s not as appealing you’d think. Especially after retirement, the “perks” of home ownership pale in comparison to the benefits of renting. If you’re thinking about making a change to your living situation, here are 10 good reasons why renting is preferable to owning your home. 1. Mobility. If employment or other life circumstances require you to move to a different city (or province), it’s a lot easier to give your landlord notice and hunt for an apartment than it would be to put your home on the market, sell it, and buy a new one. 2. Property maintenance. Whether it’s shovelling snow for 90 days straight in a heavy winter, raking autumn leaves or mowing the lawn in summer, outdoor tasks are the responsibility of your landlord, superintendent or management company, unless your lease dictates otherwise. 3. Fixture repair. When your shower stops running properly, your landlord is the one who has to call and pay for the plumber. If the fridge or stove needs replacing, that’s their financial responsibility. 4. Interest rate invulnerability. Unlike homeowners, your rent is fixed and can only increase by small increments dictated by law once the lease expires. Not so the financial market, which could see you renegotiating your mortgage every couple of years as interest rates and property values change. 5. Access to amenities. Pools, gyms, party rooms and libraries are all fairly common features of upscale modern apartment buildings. In addition, highdensity housing is often situated in the heart of the city, close to entertainment and shopping, which opens up a world of possibilities for your social life.
6. No down payment. All you have to come up with to secure your apartment is enough to cover your rent and/or security deposit. Some landlords may ask for a security deposit rather than the last month, but it will usually end up being applied that way – at any rate, deposits aren’t excessive. With the average home price in Canada now well over $400k, even a very small down payment plus legal fees, plus home inspection, plus, plus, plus – it all adds up to a big investment and a lot of money to pay out on key day. 7. Safety. Living in a rental unit typically means living near a lot of other people, and while that can occasionally be irksome, those country music fans who hold a stomping hootenanny every Saturday night are also going to hear you scream if you’re in trouble, or notice if your car hasn’t moved or your mail starts piling up. 8. Cheaper insurance. Unlike homeowners, renters do not have to insure the property – only the contents. When you get your renters insurance, expect to be paying approximately half of what you would if you owned your home. Canadian renters’ insurance averages $20 to 30 a month in most parts of the country. 9. No property taxes. While you can assume that at least some of the rent you pay goes towards covering that cost for your landlord, it isn’t your financial responsibility. Your rent remains stable and increases in a predictable fashion. 10. Lower utility costs. Heating (or cooling) a larger space than that which you actually occupy is one of the downsides of home ownership. Rental units have more compact floor plans, and in the winter you may even benefit from ambient heat from the building around you, depending on its layout.
