Most everyone these days is looking at ways to de-stress and simplify their lives, and renting rather than owning one can be one of the easiest ways to get relief. When you really think about it, it’s an option that may take some getting used to! Needless to say, when you’re renting a home, your “to-do” list will likely look very different than those from your home ownership days. It could include things like longer vacations to the sunny south; more time to enjoy friends and family, and plentiful periods of “me” time with those books and movies you’ve always wanted to check out. Whether you’re a life-long renter or a homeowner in need of a change, this issue of Renters Guide is for you. We’ve profiled some of the top buildings and suites in the area, and we’ve got some great advice on renting and decorating in the issue too. Your new “to-do” list is waiting. o you realize the convenience that apartment living offers over the holiday season? I don’t want to hear that your apartment is small so you can’t have many people over. Au contraire. Whether for a feast or a fête, it just takes some planning. Move the furniture out of the way and rent a big table and extra chairs. Doesn’t that seem the logical thing to do for the once-a-year you need seating for 15, instead of having a dedicated dining room you rarely use? I’ve been lucky enough to live in buildings where there are party rooms. I book mine months in advance. I’ve never had a guest list too large, and it saves me the deep clean of my own place before guests arrive. Many party rooms have upscale features like a fireplace, piano, catering kitchen and bar – even a sound system for dancing. When I go to parties at the apartments of family and friends, I always check if there’s a guest suite I can rent for the night. They’re often available at a nominal fee. It’s so much more convenient and comfortable than a late-night cab ride. Guest suites come to be like mini-vacations, especially if you’re visiting friends and family who live some distance away. I wouldn’t want to impose on my host further, so it’s an ideal solution! Apartment entertaining is also fabulous because there are no worries about parking, no driveway to shovel before guests arrive, and most apartments are convenient to public transit so there’s no excuse for party-goers who don’t drive.

EvErything around you has an impact on you

whether you realize it or not. When you create and develop your décor, you are trying to set the tone of the room – give it a certain look and feel. You take time to include pieces you like and enjoy, whether they are part of the design or part of the function of the room. But other pieces make their way into your space, even though they may not belong there or may be there for the wrong reasons. By organizing, de-cluttering and streamlining, you can make sure your environment has the right effect! Is clutter getting you down? Surrounding ourselves with items that mean something to us brings pleasure. And then there’s all the other stuff. Often when we feel down but can’t figure out why, it could be the clutter. Even if it’s stuffed in the back of the closet, the basement or the garage, you know it’s there. Every item holds a vibrational energy; if you’ve buried sad reminders of disappointments from your past, know that as long as you keep these emotionally toxic things in your space, they are still haunting you. Break free from the past and make space for new opportunities to come into your life. If it’s in storage and bringing you sorrow, now is a great time to let it go. Out with the old, in with the new! Eliminate your clutter hot spots We all have certain spots in our homes that have become magnets for clutter, usually because they provide a convenient, empty, flat surface to pile things on. Walk around your home to determine where the clutter hot spots are, then remove the clutter (toss it in a box or laundry basket for now) and put something beautiful in its place, like a vase or a sculpture. If it’s the dining room table, set it as if you were having a dinner party. This will deter you from using it as a drop zone. Walk around your home with the box you tossed everything into and deposit these items where they belong, either in the garbage or recycle box or stored elsewhere in your house. If they don’t have a proper home, create one.

Detaching from sentimental attachment Things that have a story attached to them are often difficult to let go of because of the sentimental attachment. Keep in mind that the item is not the memory; it simply triggers the memory. It may be beneficial to take a picture of the item and put it RentersGuide.ca in a scrapbook or photo album with a short note telling its

story. That way, the memory is preserved without taking up as much space. Another option is to pass along the items to a family member who could put them to good use. Daily de-clutter habit. You brush your teeth every day. You shower every day. Why not de-clutter every day too? Make it a habit, just like the examples I gave, and it will become second-nature. Throughout the day, when you pull something out, take a moment to put it back when you are finished with it. At the end of the day, take a couple of minutes to do a “clean sweep” of your home and put away anything that is out of place. Keep a sticky note somewhere on your way to your bedroom to remind you for the first little while. After doing it for a month, you can take the note down because it will have become a habit – one that will serve you beautifully for the rest of your life. This simple practice can help you cut down on clutter without taking a lot of time and effort.

nce you’ve painted the walls and brought in all of your beautiful pieces of furniture to your newly designed room, and you think it’s time to sit down and enjoy you’re space – think again! Accessorizing is the next, most important and final step. Accessorizing is like putting the cherry on the sundae – it doesn’t look (or taste!) as good until you’ve done it!

03 ENHANCING WHAT YOU ALREADY HAVE Even the most beautiful pieces of furniture need to be decorated to feel more warm and inviting, for example a foyer console table. To warm up the look, you can decorate the underneath area. Try sliding in two small ottomans or stools, and decorating the tops of them. Decorate with books and small accessories like trays and boxes. Decorate the top of the console too with coordinating accent pieces.

01 FRESH FLOWERS You can never have too many fresh flowers in your home. It’s especially nice to purchase them when you’re expecting company. Flowers as simple as white tulips can cheer up any room, and they’ll give your home a nice scent too. You can also make your own floral arrangements by combining tall branches and a few stems of in season flowers, such as lilacs.

04 TEX TURE Playing with texture is a very important trick when it comes to a well-decorated space. It’s not only about experimenting with different fabrics, but different finishes as well. A room that has varying textures is more interesting, and will help take the eye around the room rather than having it focus on one spot. I like to bring wood, metal, glass and painted pieces all together in one space.

Keep it simple and stay monochromatic, using different as many shades of it as you want. 07 HEIGHTS When styling, be sure that the pieces you are using come in varying heights. Having everything at the same level creates less interest. 08 ART WORK When it comes to artwork, people often step away because they are unsure of how to position it on the walls. The general rule of thumb is that the middle of the picture should be at eye level. Artwork should be hung no more than seven to 10 inches above a table, and five to eight inches above a sofa. If you’re still not confident, you can always rest your artwork on a surface and have it lean up against the wall. If you’ve got a lot of small art pieces, consider grouping them together. If you’ve got large pieces, they should be hung separately. 09 MIRRORS Adding mirrors to any décor is a great way to finish off a room. Mirrors make the room appear larger, reflect light and add a hint of sparkle to the space. The larger the mirror, the greater the affect will be. 10 LIGHTING Lighting can always make or break the overall ambience or impact the décor in a room. Adjustable lights on a dimmer switch are always a good option because they can be positioned to highlight or draw the eye away from a particular area. A dimmer switch is a great added feature, helping set the mood that you are trying to achieve without having to make it a full-time commitment.
