Most everyone these days is looking at ways to de-stress and simplify their lives, and renting rather than owning one can be one of the easiest ways to get relief. When you really think about it, it’s an option that may take some getting used to! Needless to say, when you’re renting a home, your “to-do” list will likely look very different than those from your homeownership days. Whether you’re a life-long renter or a homeowner in need of a change, this issue of Renters Guide is for you. We’ve got some great advice on renting and decorating in the issue. Check it out! t’s a holiday marathon that doesn’t stop until we reach the finish line on January 1. Do you realize the convenience that apartment living offers over the holidays? I don’t want to hear that your apartment is small, you can’t have many people over. Au contraire. I’ve always had the home that was the holiday destination. Whether for a feast or a fête, there’s never been a lack of room – it just takes some planning. I’ve moved the furniture out of the way and rented a big table and extra chairs. Doesn’t that seem the logical thing to do for the once-a-year you need seating for 15, instead of having a dedicated dining room you rarely use? I’ve been lucky enough to live in buildings where there are party rooms. I book my dates months in advance. I’ve never had a guest list too large for the party room – and it saves me the deep clean of my own place before guests arrive. Many party rooms have upscale features like a fireplace, piano, catering kitchen and bar – even a sound system for dancing. When I go to parties at the apartments of family and friends, I always check if there’s a guest suite I can rent. They’re often available at a nominal fee. It’s so much more convenient and comfortable than a late night cab ride. Guest suites come to be like mini-vacations, especially if you’re visiting friends and family who live some distance away. I wouldn’t want to impose on my host further, so it’s an ideal solution! Apartment entertaining is also fabulous because there are no worries about parking, no last minute driveway to shovel, and most apartments are convenient to public transit so there’s no excuse for guests who don’t drive. You’re ready for holiday rental living, and we’re here to help. Postal elves ready to helP santa’s Post office More than a million letters expected again this year “Treat every day like Christmas,” “There’s room for everyone on the Nice List” and “The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loudly for all to hear.” Santa’s Chief Postal Elf reminded all her crew - new and old - of these rules just last week. Santa’s 9,000 postal elves have their pens, pencils and mailbags ready to receive letters from children all over the world. Santa’s postal elves will help him answer more than one million letters in more than 30 different languages, including Braille. More than 21.8 million letters have been received at Santa’s North Pole Post Office since 1982. According to Santa’s CPE (Chief Postal Elf), Holly T. Elf, there are three golden rules in sending a letter to Santa: 1) Make sure you include your return address! While Santa knows where you live, his postal elves need your address to deliver Santa’s letter to your home. After all, not everyone has access to Rudolph! 2) Send your letter soon! Already letters are arriving from across the world and Santa is busy reading them every night with Mrs. Claus. He encourages you to send your letter soon to ensure he’ll have enough time to answer each and every one of them. Letters must be mailed by December 17 to allow enough time for travel to the North Pole and back! 3) Remember Santa’s address: When your letter is ready, drop it in a mailbox anywhere in Canada and the postal elves will make sure it gets to the big man quickly. Santa has a special arrangement with the post office and a stamp is not required. But please remember any other letter or card being sent to Grandma or anyone else needs a stamp. Holiday preparations such as tree trimming, present wrapping and hanging lights help get us in the holiday spirit and are lots of fun. But thoughtful packing of seasonal decorations and materials at the end of the holidays for the next year, can keep the fun in what is for some, a stressful time. In other words, it pays to plan, even 12 months ahead. Careful packing and organization prevents damage and breakage, and ensures you can find everything next year. It is worth taking the extra time to organize and preserve your decorations for next year. Here are some tips from Two Men and a Truck to keep in mind while packing away holiday decorations: Delicate items TheRentersGuide.ca • Wrap breakables in paper or bubble wrap. Do not use newspaper - the print may wear off on ornaments. Use tissue or packing paper. Instead of throwing away used paper or junk mail, run it through a paper shredder, TheRentersGuide.ca
it makes great packing filler. • Decorations that contain photographs or food should be sealed in an air tight bag to keep them safe. Sealing photos preserves them and the scent from any food item will attract insects or mice wherever they are stored. • Boxes with dividers are best to pack ornaments in. There are cardboard boxes made especially for fragile items. They come with adjustable inserts that forms individual cells for delicate items. These“Dish Pack”boxes are very popular at all our Two Men and a Truck branches. • Keep extra hangers, hooks and ornament parts in a labelled bag or box. Lights • To prevent tangles, wrap lights around empty gift wrapping paper tubes. • Leave the plug accessible by taping the ends of the light strands to the end of the tube. Next year you can quickly test the lights before unwinding them. • Store coloured lights in a dark place to prevent fading – especially blues, greens and purples. Wrapping paper • Hanging garment bags provides good storage for wrapping paper rolls. Use outside pockets for gift tags, cards and tissue paper. • To protect used rolls of paper, cut an empty wrapping paper tube from end to end and slide it over the roll. • Ribbons and bows can be saved and reused, pack loosely so they keep their shape. Some other considerations • Wrap holiday candles individually in cellophane and store in a cool place so they do not melt together. • Pack an“open first”box. Place the decorations you use first in here with
essentials such as extension cords. • Use a wardrobe box to hang and store seasonal clothing that you only wear twice a year like that special snowman sweater from your mother-in-law or that flashing Christmas tie. This way you can find it, wear it, and store it away on a hanger easily. • If you haven’t used a decoration in a few years donate it. If it is damaged, get rid of it. • Take special care if you are storing your items in a damp area like a basement. Don’t store boxes near sources of heat and moisture. • The most important tip is to label every box. The more detailed the description, the easier it will be to find things. Use different colours to distinguish different holidays. For example, use orange for Halloween, brown for Thanksgiving, and red or green for Christmas. • Take a digital photo of special care items like snow globes or wreaths, print them off on regular paper and tape the photo to the outside of the box as an easy description of what’s inside. ccording to legend, the Christmas tree was first introduced to Canada long before Confederation, in 1781. This first tree, decorated with white candles, was a balsam fir cut from the dense forest in the region that is now the city of SorelTracy, Quebec. It was beautiful but perilous and even though we’re no longer using lit candles as tree ornaments, the risk of fire remains real. “Keep the tree watered,” says Wayne Ross, an insurance expert at Aviva Canada. “That is our mantra at this time of year. Not only does it create a fragrant ‘winter wonderland’ atmosphere, but a wet tree is a safer tree.” Here are some other safety tips to help keep your home not only festive, but safe as well: • When buying your tree, make sure the needles don’t fall out when you bounce the tree on the ground. These types of trees tend to dry out very quickly, meaning they will also burn very quickly. • Don’t overload electrical outlets with too much lighting and/or extension cords. • Under no circumstances leave a lit Christmas tree unattended. If you’re out for the evening, be sure to unplug the lights. • Never place lit candles near your tree.

How to take finances from mine and yours to ours, at any age Ready to say “I do” to joint finances? Here’s how to combine dollars and cents at any life stage.

irst comes love, and then comes…a joint bank account. Whether a couple is cohabitating in their twenties, getting married in their thirties, or remarrying in their sixties, at some point in any serious relationship the conversation about joint finances will surface. Regardless of life stage, successfully integrating finances requires open and honest communication to determine how to best combine and plan for the future together.
According to research from TD Canada Trust, which surveyed adults in committed relationships, the top three personal finance products that Canadians combine with their partner are a joint bank account (64 per cent), a mortgage (60 per cent) and a joint credit card (50 per cent), compared to only 36 per cent of couples who have a joint financial plan. “A common first step in combining finances with a partner is a joint account for shared household expenses, and like other aspects of the relationship, communication is key to keeping things harmonious,” said Janice Farrell Jones, TD Canada Trust.“It’s important that both parties have a clear understanding of household finances - from day to day spending to long-term savings and investments - and all aspects of each individuals finances - from everyday banking to credit card management - to set the framework for a strong financial future together.” TD Canada Trust provides some advice that may help in maintaining financial harmony when integrating finances with a partner at any life stage: The 20s Combining finances is often a first for many couples in their 20s, whether it’s renting an apartment together or working to pay down existing student debt.
